PRELIMINARY STUDIES - CASE STUDIES
CONTAINER CITY
Container City is a project located in east London and consist of two pieces of architecture consisting of affordable homes and offices by taking standard forty – foot containers that were being discarded away. Total time to construct the entire structure took a mere four days but the outfitting of each container took roughly 5 months.
The containers are arranged in a way to separate the design into two distinct sections. One that is very rigid, which was where the offices were located. And one that was more organic which was where the people would stay. Not much structural elements were used as the containers themselves were load bearing and could be stacked on top of each other even while being occupied by people.
The main purpose of this porject was to explore the viability of using Shipping Containers for creating small offices and residential homes. It was quite successful and spawned a sister location, located right next to it. Throughout the building, there is a wide variety of shapes, forms and designs, in which how the containers are arranged, which gives it a very vibrant and energetic look which has a stark contrast tothe uniformity and rigidness of the containers themselves.

FOUNDATION AND STRUCTURE
For the foundation we will be using two different types. One will be used for the platform located on top of the lake and the other will be regular pad footing for parts of the structure on land. For the overall structure, containers are self bearing and are meant to handle heavy loads by themselves. Assembly of the overall structure can be carried out by simply welding the containers together after installing it into the foundation.
