KPA Ladies Play their First Game in MOZAMBIQUE

November 2016

Team Arrives Safely GroupA:-Ferroviario (Mozambique), Inter Clube (Angola),FAP (Cameroun),EtoileFilante(Togo) and KPA (Kenya). Group B:-1st Agosto (Angola),First Bank(Nigeria), A’Politechnica(Mzambique),GSP(Al geria) and USIU(Kenya). KPA team turns up at the continental games as FIBA –Africa Zone V and Kenya’s representatives. This follows KPA’s success in the just concluded Zone V Club Championships held in Dar-essalaam, Tanzania where the team was crowned champions. The other Kenyan team is United States International University (USIU).

KPA Ladies Basketball team currently doing duty for the Nation in Maputo, Mozambique started the tournament on a wrong footing when they lost 43-57 to FAP of Cameroon. The Dockers succumbed to pressure from their opponents during the opening match of the 22nd edition of Africa champions’ cup for Women that officially opened on Friday .The match watched by a fair crowd preceded the official opening ceremony for the 10 day international event. It all started badly for the KPA Ladies who appeared uncoordinated as they fought hard but only to lose balls to their opponent’s at critical points .Nearly 8 Minutes into the first quarter KPA ladies were trailing at 2-13 points prompting Head Coach Anthony Ojukwu call for frequent timeouts in an attempt to change the game tactics. At this point KPA had recorded five fouls compared to one by their opponents. The other possible factor could also be the level of the tournament which is higher than that of the regional championships. Most of the players are yet to gain experience and exposure to comfortably tackle their opponents some of whom are hinted

According to some basketball game analysts who seemingly had special liking for the Kenyan team, most of the KPA ladies had initially looked intimidated, unsure and restless. This, they said, may have been due to the fact that most of the players were not used to the environment, the look and feel of the venue which is cut to international standards. The other possible factor could also be the level of the tournament which is higher than that of the regional championships. Most of the players are yet to gain experience and exposure to comfortably tackle their opponents some of whom are hinted to turn up for professional clubs in their respective countries. Thanks to the timely intervention by head coach, some key players were substituted and the game tilted inKPA’s favour . At this point the Dockers intensified their offensive and tightened defense holding the “charging” Cameroons hostage to earn themselves 3 quick points. The quarter closed at 5-13 score line.

ome the second quarter, 3 Minutes into the game, KPA ladies had moved their onslaught a level higher, bridging the gap to 11-13 points. This was indeed a positive

indication by the team and all looked well .However this was only short lived as towards the last 15 seconds the score line gap had widened to 2127 points. The third quarter saw FAP

November 2016 re-energized, dominate the game and leading to 29-48 points at the closure. KPA returned much organized in the fourth quarter but too late to redeem the trend managing14 points against 9 for their opponents.
