Dear booksellers, friends of books, and art lovers, Liebe Buchhändler*innen, Bücherfreund*innen und Kunstbegeisterte, die Herausforderungen der Zeit nehmen nicht ab. Wir sind daher froh, dass zumindest persönliche Kontakte wieder zunehmen und viele Künstler*innen zum Druck in unsere verlagseigene Druckerei nach Bielefeld reisen, um mit uns vor Ort besondere Publikationen entstehen zu lassen. In Zeiten der Papierknappheit und steigender Kosten bietet unsere eigene Druckerei das besondere Privileg der Autonomie, mit dem wir größtmögliche Verlässlichkeit und die gewohnt hervorragende Qualität gewährleisten können. Dass unsere Leidenschaft für hochwertige Kunstbücher nun auch mit dem Deutschen Verlagspreis 2022 gewürdigt wurde, erfüllt uns mit Stolz und Dankbarkeit. Der Herbst hält wieder einmal eine Vielfalt spannender Publikationen bereit. Wir freuen uns auf Ausstellungskataloge zu internationalen Größen wie Maria Lassnig und Frank Stella, auf Publikationen zu etablierten Positionen wie Paweł Althamer und Angela Hampel sowie zu jungen Künstler*innen wie Sebastian Hosu und Stephie Braun. Gleich zwei bemerkenswerte Titel unseres Programms kommen in diesem Herbst aus Frankfurt am Main. Das Weltkulturen Museum setzt sich in der ausstellungsbegleitenden Publikation healing mit den Möglichkeiten für ein postkoloniales globales Miteinander auseinander – ein hochaktuelles Thema, das künstlerisch wie wissenschaftlich beleuchtet wird. Das Jüdische Museum präsentiert vier jüdische Künstlerinnen, die in Vergessenheit geraten sind und deren Werk nun erstmals wieder der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht wird. Auch freuen wir uns sehr darauf, unsere erstklassigen Fototitel aus diesem Programm auf der Paris Photo zu präsentieren. Neben dem Jubiläumsband des Aktmagazins THE OPÉRA gehören unter anderem die Fotobücher von Frank Schinski, Jason Langer und Catrine Val dazu.

the challenges of the time are not decreasing. We are thus glad that at least personal contact is increasing again and that many artists are traveling to Bielefeld for the printing of their books at our in-house printing plant in order to facilitate the production of special publications with us on site. At a time of paper scarcity and rising costs, our in-house printing plant offers the special privilege of autonomy, with which we are able to provide the greatest possible reliability and the usual excellent quality. The fact that our passion for high-quality art books has now also been recognized with the award of the 2022 Deutscher Verlagspreis (German Publishing Prize) fills us with pride and gratitude. A diverse range of fascinating publications can once again be found in our fall program. We are looking forward to exhibition catalogues on great international artists such as Maria Lassnig and Frank Stella and publications on established positions such as those of Paweł Althamer and Angela Hampel, as well as on young artists like Sebastian Hosu and Stephie Braun. Two noteworthy titles in our fall program come from Frankfurt am Main. The Weltkulturen Museum’s publication healing, which accompanies the exhibition of the same name, examines the possibilities of postcolonial, global coexistence—a highly topical issue, on which light is shed from artistic and scholarly perspectives. The Jüdisches Museum is presenting four Jewish women artists who have been largely forgotten and whose work is now being made accessible to the public for the first time. We are also very pleased to present our first-class photo books from this program at Paris Photo. Besides the anniversary volume of our magazine on nude photography, THE OPÉRA, there are also photo books by Frank Schinski, Jason Langer, and Catrine Val, amongst others. We hope you enjoy your journey of discovery through our program.

Maria Lassnig (1919–2014) zählt zu den bedeutendsten Künstlerinnen der Kunst nach 1960. In ihrer jahrzehntelangen Karriere schuf sie ein ebenso umfangreiches wie singuläres Œuvre auf den Gebieten der Malerei, Zeichnung und Grafik, mit punktuellen Exkursen in den (Animations-)Film und die Plastik. Das Zentrum ihres Werks bilden Visualisierungen körperlicher Empfindungen, sogenannte „Körperbewusstseinsbilder“. Ihre akribische Selbstanalyse bekunden auch zahlreiche Selbstporträts. Helmut Klewan begleitete Maria Lassnig über drei Jahrzehnte als Galerist. Daraus entwickelte sich ein reicher Bestand an Ölmalereien und Papierarbeiten nebst einer Plastik. Vierzig Werke aus verschiedenen Schaffensphasen wurden für die Ausstellung in Berlin ausgewählt. Maria Lassnig (1919–2014) is one of the most important women artists in art after 1960. Over her decades-long career, she produced an extensive and singular oeuvre in the fields of painting, drawing, and graphic reproductions, with intermittent excursions into (animation) film and sculpture. At the center of her work are visualizations of physical perceptions, or so-called body-awareness pictures. Her painstaking self-analyses are also expressed in numerous self-portraits. Helmut Klewan accompanied Maria Lassnig as a gallerist for over three decades. This led to the development of a rich inventory of oil paintings and works on paper as well as one sculpture. Forty works from various creative phases were selected for the exhibition in Berlin.

Frank Stella (*1936) verortet sein Werk nicht allein in der Gegenwart. Abstraktion oder Gegenständlichkeit, Abbild, Zeichen und Ornament, ebenso wie Fragen nach Fläche und Raum stellten sich ihm immer wieder neu. Die Publikation präsentiert im Kontext der Wiesbadener Sammlung folgende Werkphasen: die frühen, dem Minimalismus zugeschriebenen Streifenbilder, den Aufbruch in den Raum, also vom Bild zum Relief sowie die Verwendung von Ornament und Arabeske. Im Zusammenspiel mit aktuellen Skulpturen des Künstlers wird damit nicht nur die Stringenz seines Werkes, sondern auch die Relevanz seines Arbeitens bis in die Gegenwart belegt. Frank Stella (*1936) situates his oeuvre not only in the present. Abstraction or representation, simulacrum, sign, and ornament, as well as questions of surface and space have fascinated him anew time and again. The publication presents the following phases in his oeuvre in the context of the Museum Wiesbaden’s collection: the early works, the stripe paintings attributed to minimalism, the departure into space, and thus from the picture to the relief, as well as the use of ornament and arabesque. In interplay with current sculptures by the artist, not only the rigorousness of his oeuvre but also the relevance of his work until today is thus shown.

Is contemporary art’s recurring turn to a material with a rich tradition an attempt to free the precious metal from its historical heritage, from grandeur and pathos? In der Monografie mit dem Titel Premonition (deutsch: Vorahnung) präsentiert Miguel Rothschild (*1963) eine Auswahl von Arbeiten aus seinen letzten beiden Serien. Der in Berlin lebende argentinische Künstler beschäftigt sich darin mit Geistern und der Apokalypse. Die mystisch konnotierten Fotografien des Himmels und der Wälder erhalten durch Brandlöcher eine zweite Ebene – sowohl inhaltlich als auch bildlich. Hier steigen die Waldgeister zwischen den Baumwipfeln empor, dort sind es die barocken oder romantischen Himmelansichten, die diese dämonischen und zugleich verführerischen Seelen empfangen. Rothschilds mehrdeutige Visionen fordern uns dazu auf, unsere Beziehung zur Natur zu hinterfragen. In the monograph with the title Premonition, Miguel Rothschild (*1963) presents a selection of works from his two most recent series. In them, the Berlin-based, Argentinian artist occupies himself with spirits and the apocalypse. The mystically connoted photographs of skies and forests are given a second layer of meaning—both in terms of content and the visual—through the use of burn holes. Here the spirits of the forest ascend between the treetops, there it is a baroque or romantic sky that receives these demonic and at the same time alluring souls. Rothschild’s ambiguous visions prompt us to interrogate our relationship to nature.

Die erste institutionelle Präsentation mit Werken von Sven Drühl fand im Jahr 2002 unter dem Titel Die Aufregung im Museum Morsbroich Leverkusen statt. Die Räume, in denen das Museum damals junge Positionen vorstellte, werden seit vielen Jahren vom Kunstverein Leverkusen Schloss Morsbroich e. V. bespielt. Nun kehrt Sven Drühl, der für seine künstlerischen Adaptionen und Remixe bekannt ist, mit seinen neuen Landschaftsgemälden, die auf rein virtuellen Vorlagen basieren, an diesen Ort zurück. Dort, wo künstlerisch seine Laufbahn begonnen hat, zeigt der Künstler Gemälde und Bronzen aus den letzten sechs Jahren. The first institutional presentation with works by Sven Drühl took place in 2002 under the title Die Aufregung at the Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen. The rooms in which the museum presented the then young positions have been used by the Kunstverein Leverkusen Schloss Morsbroich e. V. for many years. Sven Drühl, who is known for his artistic adaptations and remixes, has now returned to this location with his new landscape paintings, which are based purely on virtual models. In the place where his artistic career began, the artist is now showing paintings and bronzes from the past six years.

The book is a hybrid between an artist book and a catalogue raisonné and provides a complete overview of the works created since 2006 by the Berlin-based painter René Wirths. The works are also sorted into groups based on in part formal, in part content-related, and often surprising criteria. Wirths is a painter of things whose pictures, despite their hyperrealistic attention to detail, nevertheless dissolve again into color and abstraction. The motifs depicted are thus robbed of their “authenticity” (to quote Heidegger) and become a phenomenological examination of the things that surround us. The book pursues these examinations and supplements the astounding oeuvre by positing new aspects.

Wenn auch die Zeichnungen ihre Bedeutung hinter der klaren, reduzierten Linienführung verbergen, bleibt die Konkretheit dieser Vor-Bilder in den Arbeiten präsent. In der Publikation verbinden sich die einzelnen Zeichnungen zu einer Art Text – einer Erzählung aus dem Unbekannten. Auch wenn wir Schrift und Sprache dieses Textes nicht beherrschen, lässt sich doch das eine oder andere Muster darin erkennen. Damit erwacht auch die Neugier, das Andere, Unbekannte dieser Zeichnungen zu ergründen. The book by the artist Benno Blome (*1979) is a composition of rhythm, eloquence, and silence. It is based on a series of abstract drawings derived from incidents and objects in the real world. Even though the drawings conceal their meaning behind the clear, reduced line management, the concreteness of these models remains present in the works. In the publication, the individual drawings are combined into a sort of text—a story from the unknown. Even if we are not proficient in the writing and language of this text, it is possible to recognize one pattern or another in it. persönlichen Verbindungen zwischen Künstler*innen und Konzertfreunden nachzuspüren, wurde der OSTKREUZ-Fotograf Frank Schinski beauftragt, Momente der Nähe einzufangen: in der Künstlergarderobe, auf Reisen sowie zu Hause bei den Musiker*innen. Entstanden ist dabei ein Buch, das einen einzigartigen Blick hinter die Kulissen der viel gerühmten Konzertreihe gewährt, mit Bildern, die allen Protagonist*innen eine ganz eigene Bühne bereiten. The fact that artist agencies in New York are familiar with Neumarkt in Bavaria is thanks to the chamber music hall located there. Its exceptional acoustics were what prompted the local businessman Ernst-Herbert Pfleiderer to establish the Neumarkter Konzertfreunde. For over forty years, this association has been organizing series of concerts that are popular with both musicians and audiences. In order to trace the personal connections between artists and friends of concerts, the OSTKREUZ photographer Frank Schinski was commissioned to capture moments of closeness: in the artists’ dressing rooms, on trips, and at the musicians’ homes. This resulted in the creation of a book that provides a unique view behind the scenes of this very famous series of concerts: with pictures that offer all the protagonists a very special stage.

Two things resonate in Tom Nagy’s photographic portraits of icebergs and Antarctic landscapes: the untamable, irrepressible energies of nature and the fragility of its jagged shapes, which are minimalistic and narrative, static and mobile, majestic and delicate all at the same time. Nagy’s photographs enable us to experience this ephemeral nature becoming a picture and thus prevent them from vanishing for good. In his portraits of icebergs, they become ephemeral sculptures, which drift in the solitary silence of the Antarctic waters like artworks, to then ultimately dissolve completely. From the perspective of the photographer, the Antarctic landscape encourages us to contemplate the cycle of life and to sense our own impermanence.

Die Adriaküste, die in Fregosos Erinnerungen ein fast himmlischer Ort war, besteht in Wahrheit aus einer unendlichen Aneinanderreihung von Betonbauten, die während des italienischen Wirtschaftsbooms in aller Eile errichtet wurden. Fregoso fängt in seinen Aufnahmen die vom Massentourismus geprägte Region mit all ihren Widersprüchen und dem ihr eigenen Licht ein. Adriatico ist eine Hommage an den Sommer, an die Urlaubsatmosphäre und an die Fotografien von Luigi Ghirri. In Adriatico, the photographer Riccardo Fregoso (*1981) seeks out places where he spent vacations in his childhood and youth. For this, he traveled the coasts of the Abruzzo and the Molise, to then focus his gaze northwards to the Marche and southwards to Apulia. The Adriatic coast, which is an almost heavenly place in Fregoso’s memories, consists in reality of an endless succession of concrete buildings, which were hastily erected during the economic boom in Italy. In his photos, Fregoso captures the region shaped by mass tourism, with all its contradictions and its particular light. Adriatico is an homage to summer, the vacation atmosphere, and the photographs of Luigi Ghirri.

Jason Langer (*1967) lebte von seinem sechsten bis zu seinem elften Lebensjahr in einem Kibbuz in Israel – eine Zeit, die ihn bis heute prägt. Als er 2008 nach Berlin eingeladen wurde, um die Stadt zu fotografieren, begegnete er dem Vorschlag mit Beklommenheit. Er assoziierte die deutsche Hauptstadt mit den Gräueltaten des 20. Jason Langer (*1967) lived on a kibbutz in Israel from the age of six to eleven, formative years that have shaped him to this day, so when he was invited to Berlin in 2008 to photograph the city, he met the suggestion with trepidation. Associating the German capital with the atrocities of the 20th century, he saw it as a cold, unfriendly place. Even so he accepted, and from 2009 to 2013 he explored the city mostly on foot, with two cameras and black-and-white film. He photographed Berlin with an eye towards places where Jewish people were deported or killed but also took it as an opportunity to confront and update his preconceived notions and find a new narrative of contemporary Germany and the German people. Photographing the streets, people he met on the way, and acquaintances who grew to be friends, he tracked traces of the Holocaust and the Cold War, and imagined the freedom and creative expression of the Roaring Twenties. 63
