Message From Hank Heerema, President of the Kerby Centre Board For over 40 years, Kerby Centre has been a cornerstone of the Calgary older adult community. It has been a great honour and privilege to be part of our city’s growth and development. In 2015, Kerby Centre continued to build our community. We built it through new programs and services. We built partnership that will help us best serve Calgary. And we helped older adults build friendships, social connections, and improve their health and well-being.

to face these difficult economic times, as well as plan for the future of Kerby Centre. A great deal of work went into updating Kerby Centre’s bylaws to reflect changes in both this organization and the needs of our community. These changes were presented and approved at the Annual General Meeting in the spring of 2015.

Most notable of those changes was the removal of an age requirement for membership. Kerby Centre has always been committed to changing the way people We as a Board continued the see aging, and we came to growth and change needed see that older adults’ views

had changed as well. Most of our programs are now open to all ages and we encourage intergenerational participation. The Board also updated our own policies and procedures for similar reasons. It is important to ensure our Board is staying at the leading edge of governance, particularly as we look toward the future. On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for being part of Kerby Centre’s community as we continue to build toward a healthy and active lifestyle for Calgary’s older adults.

Message From Luanne Whitmarsh, Kerby Centre CEO 2015 was a year of Building Community. We balanced the needs and wishes of older adults with available resources. In every area of Kerby there was increased demand: pension information, foot care, safe housing, food, information, senior’s accommodation, exercise, creative arts, and basic needs like groceries and direct care. The Team at Kerby is creative and resilient. We reduced administration and building costs significantly and we increased revenues by renting out every square inch of our building when we could, increasing catering, and holding more events.

refer, we provide direct service, we learn, and we teach. The new programs and services, delicious menus, interesting workshops and articles, and the opportunity to provide welcoming spaces for relaxing and visiting makes it all worthwhile.

Building community has continued to be the focus of all we do at Kerby. Community is defined by a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. To accomplish this we partner, we

We have not forgotten those caring for a loved one at home. Caregivers are in need of support too – do you have someone in your life who is a caregiver that could use an extra hand, or some quiet time for themselves?

The Kerby team really is the membership, Board, participants, volunteers, team members, funders and supporters. And we have many! Our membership of 3,000, plus 22,000 other participants, find what they need at Kerby. The increase in membership tells us we are continuing in the right direction.

We received a bequest that was dearly appreciated – it went a long way to funding programs. Also, we received a donation of stocks that will go to support homeless older adults while they plan for their new homes. If you are interested in getting more information about how you can help in this way, let me know. This is your opportunity to Build your Community! Come to Kerby and see how many ways you can engage! Bring your family and friends, your adult children and your grandchildren. YOU are the best community builder – come to Kerby and watch the difference you can make in YOUR life!

Kerby Centre’s 61 Staff and 450 volunteers provide exceptional support and services for older adults.

Safety is a core value for us all. Kerby Rotary Shelter is there for those who are experiencing elder abuse. The sadness that people entering the shelter feel turns to strength and determination when they leave – ready to engage in their lives and build their own supportive community network.

Kerby Centre is respresented on a wide variety of outside committees and boards. Among them are: Age Friendly Calgary Alberta Association of Seniors Centres Alberta Council for Women’s Shelters Alberta Health Services Patient First Strategy Alberta Network of Seniors Related Organizations Alberta Poverty Reduction Community of Practice Calgary Domestic Violence Collaborative Calgary Seniors Housing Forum Creative Aging Calgary East Village Seniors Service Committee Elder Abuse Response Team Financial Literacy for Older Adults Immigrant Seniors Advisory Committee Older Adult Council of Calgary

Food is a basic need. Kerby Centre rebranded our Grocery Delivery Program as ‘Thrive’ in the past year. We felt that the staff and volunteers are providing much more than grocery delivery; they are ensuring people are thriving to the best of their abilities. Thrive still delivers groceries – but they also assess increased signs of isolation or depression, that the person is still able to cook the food we deliver and that their medical state has not changed.

Kerby Centre was proud to be part of The City of Calgary’s development of the Age Friendly Strategy in 2015.

Kerby Centre’s annual Expo was revamped in 2015. A move to Saturday and the addition of live music brought an intergenerational crowd.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of our national flag, our Government honoured fifty Canadians and organizations who contribute significantly to the well-being of our citizens. Kerby Centre CEO Luanne Whitmarsh received a flag in recognition of Kerby Centre’s commitment to delivering valuable social services to older adults of all income levels.

57 older adults and caregivers took part in the Walk Your Way event, a morning walk through Calgary’s +15 system.

Beginning in 2015, a therapy dog began regular visits with Adult Day Program participants and residents of the Kerby Rotary Shelter. These visits have brought great joy to older adults in our programs.

Students from Rundle College visited our Adult Day Program throughout 2015. The students entertained ADP clients by performing plays they had written and directed, playing card games, and helping make crafts with our clients. One project which left a lasting impression had the students interviewing ADP participants to discover past experiences and stories. The Adult Day Program clients very much enjoyed this as they were able to reminisce about events from their childhood.

This note, written at our Stampede Breakfast in 2015, became a motivator for our team, and a touchstone for our supporters to show the power of what Kerby Centre means to so many.

Fundraising Events In 2015, Kerby Centre expanded our fundraising activities to include new ways of connecting with our community. The Kerby Cares Fundraising Gala featured guest speaker Brian Keating. Mr. Keating entertained the crowd with stories of his explorations of the natural world from Africa to his own back yard. Betty Brewer was our Lucky winner of our Kerby Spring Fling Raffle. She won a nine-day trip to sunny Victoria, BC. All proceeds from the raffle went to supporting our Diana James Wellness Clinic. Thank you! We hosted a very special evening in November with Kerby Centre friends and the Harmonycatz quartet. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the season, say thanks and enjoy special music with friends.
