McComas Gym Corridor Renovation
My partner, Kelsey Muir, and I chose to express the dynamism of body movement in the main feature piece. The feature allows for a variety of temporary interactions typically done in a corridor, while stressing directionality and movement. Energetic vibes add character to a overlooked area, by extracting a compound color scheme from Virginia Tech’s school colors.
Programs used: Sketchup, Rhino, Revit, Illustrator, Adobe [ Ai, Id, Ps ]

STROBOSCOPIC STUDIES
In our effort to incorporate fitness into the gym design, we chose to study body motion through three common activities in a gym: running, walking, and stretching. The running motion is integrated into the active zone of the floor plan, walking in the transition zone, and yoga in the idle or still zone. The feature piece captures the clients company values by representing their “live well” components.
USER INTERACTION
The bungee cord feature piece is easy to manipulate for one’s needs. It ranges in heights and forms to accommodate for temporary activities like stretching, leaning, sitting, and storing.

Each bungee cord will be wrapped around metal poles to keep the cord taut enough to support body weight. The cords allow flexibility and form to the body for more comfort.

The bungee cords will attach to the ceiling with suspension ceiling hooks. These are typically used with hammock swings and has a large weight capacity. Bungee cords can be tied directly or finished with a hook.

Fabrics, such as felt, were selected according to properties associated with acoustics, color, and durability.
Informational screens allow students to learn more about the resources and programs available to them.
Storage lockers account for larger items such as winter coats or smaller items like phones. A fresh towel rack and laundry basket are located nearby.

Carilion + Virginia Tech + DIRTT 357 Salem Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24016
Roanoke is defined by its assortment of country music and craft beer. Several nearby breweries allow for coworkers to socialize after working/learning at the research center. The space was developed by finding the halfway point between the social atmosphere of the neighboring spaces and the research endeavors of Virginia Tech and Carilion. Therefore, the fundamental concept was based on the scientific process of fermentation used in brewing craft beer.

Masses are used to show the main concentration of spaces and circulation through the building.
Some of the existing columns must be taken out or adusted to fit the large cental spaces located along the stairs. In order to maintain the structural capabilities of the existing features, the beams are doubled to strengthen its load bearing properties as shown to the left.

AXON
This axon reveals the main structure of the building and the wall arrangements. The orange and pink walls highlight DIRTT walls. The darker red points out the open lecture and assembly area that meets between the first and second levels. This allow for spontaneous interactions to take place and therefore increases creativity.

NEXT OFFICE SPACE Steelcase Competition Cherry Creek, Denver, Colorado
NEXT is inspired by sailing at the local marina in Cherry Creek. To succeed in sailing, each member of the team must act to prevail against strong winds. The two office suits reflect two forms of a sailboat; one still, and one in motion. A still boat has flat sails and a vertical mast (relaxing zone) and a boat in motion has inflated sails with a tilted mast (active zone). The suites reflect the light, buoyant quality of the sails through tensile structures.
Programs used: Revit, Illustrator, Adobe [ Ai, Id, Ps ]

"Communication, creative problem solving, and collaboration are
fundamental to sailing... translates into your professional life"
-CSC
The Community Sailing of Colorado (CSC) is a nonprofit organization whose main goal aims for the accessibility of sailing (regardless of age or physicality). Sailing classes are offered at two main locations in Boulder & Cherry Creek Reservoirs, however additional locations for classes are also shown on the map above.

PARTI DIAGRAM
The parti diagram above displays the two grids that inform the floor plan. The grids are inspired by the mast and boom on a sailboat, while the diagonal grid is also representative of a boat tilting 45 degrees. This degree is more typical of competitive sailing and symbolizes a team working hard to prevail against strong winds.
NAUTICAL SCHEME
Natural blues are said to increase efficiency and focus by calming nerves and reminding people of the ocean. The pink is a lighter former of red to capture the harmonious atmosphere granted by an analogous color scheme, without the same intensity. These should allow the workers to feel comfortable and at home.

Sails can be made out of various fabrics including canvas. Just as in a piece of artwork, the canvas here, acts as a display of creativity, thought, and emotion. The renderings show a video projecting on the Flexes (can be installed on nearby column, ceiling, or table). During the day people can work by sharing videos, presentations, and animations.
