Economy - Brief History • Entire forest of Belum and Temenggor was considered ‘black area’ • Placed under a State of Emergency from 1948 till 1989 • Peace is reigned after the Hatyai Peace Accord in 1989 • First proposed to be protected by wildlife biologist W.E.Stevens in 1968 • 40 years effort, May 2007, gazettement of 117,500 ha. under effort of Malaysian Nature Society (MNS)

Economy – Shift of Source • Exploitation of timber and other natural resources accelerated since independence from the United Kingdom • Natural Forest Policy (NFP) concerned about the long term effect of deforestation and the continuous decrease in forestry area • MNS, the public and some respected public figures successfully offset the sacrifice one of timber use (timber) by creating a potentially more favourable economic future based on ecotourism.

Economy – Belum Rainforest Resort • Consists of Phase 1 and Phase 2 which were completed in 2008 and 2013 respectively • Facilities such as Research Centre, Interpretation Centre and Resorts are built to attract tourists, thus generating income • High-end villas were built to welcome investors • Successful Ecotourism
politics • to generate hydro-electric power and to deprive communist terrorists then of one of their few remaining infiltration routes from their bases in southern Thailand. • Environmental organizations have been lobbying for the area to be gazetted as a state park however it is still being considered. • The Royal Belum State Park is contained within the Belum-Temengor Rainforest complex. In 2007, the state government gazetted 1,175 sq. kilometres of the rainforest as a state park.

• Trees on site cannot be cut without any valid reason according to Forestry Act 1984 (Amended 1993). • 80% of land is proclaimed for nature, only 20% will be reserved for low-density development with minimal carbon footprints and eco-friendly construction elements utilising local talents and sourcing what is required locally. • Adopt a development practice that is not detrimental to the environment and its surrounding. Take into consideration the social and physical structure as well as the interest of local population especially the orang asli community. • Relocation of villages is allowed but destroying of these is not allowed. • Development shall be sustainable where it is economically viable and ecologically manageable in a long run.
