Chairman’s CORNER
Step out of your comfort zone Everyone knows that I prefer dresses. I’ve hardly ever worn anything else, especially to chamber events. So when I woke up that Saturday exited and ready to support the 30 Gun Draw, I dressed as I normally do, in a dress. I arrived at the shooting range carrying a shotgun, a camo vest loaded with shotgun shells and ear plugs (all thanks to Justin Foster) so that I could respectfully represent Community First National Bank, my official sponsor, and my chamber. I’ll be honest. I was calm on the outside but a nervous wreck on the inside as Justin and my two other supportive coaches tried to give me lessons and advice on shooting just one hour before the competition. I thought, “What the heck and I doing? Either I’m gonna shoot my eye out, or someone else’s. What was I thinking when I agreed to be a part of this event?” But I didn’t want to let the chamber down nor the partner assigned to shoot with me. While I was terrible (shot only 1 trap and 4 skeet out of 25) I had a blast! It was a wonderful event full of wonderful people. Although I wasn’t a sure shot, the lesson I learned that day was that it’s good to mix it up. As a chamber member, I surprised other members. I wasn’t in my normal setting or my normal role. But by stepping out of my comfort zone….WAY out of my comfort zone…I met lots of new people, learned lots of new things, and challenged myself. So, here is my challenge to you. Mix it up! If you are an early riser and love our 8 a.m. Coffee Talks, try going to later events like our mixers or our annual Awards Banquet. If you are a regular advertiser on our web or in BusinessLink, thank you! But try advertising in person at our Business Expo in August. Then, if you play golf and support our annual tournament, mix it up this coming year. Trade those golf clubs for a shotgun and pull a new trigger. Like me! Bottom line, wear what you want to wear to any chamber event, but mix it up in the events or opportunities you attend. Pick just one chamber event you’ve never sponsored or attended before and step out of your comfort zone. It will open a whole new business opportunity – and friends for life. (30-Gun Draw did for me, though I’m still being teased. Worth every second!)

Craft agriculture is an important growth industry in Kerr County Since the publication of the Kerrville 2050 Comprehensive plan, we have seen significant progress in the development of our craft agriculture industry. In the Kerrville 2050 Comprehensive Plan and the Kerr Economic Development Corporation (KEDC)’s 5-year strategic plan the craft agriculture industry is identified as target area for economic development. The term “craft agriculture” and the economic potential of this industry is oftentimes not well understood nor appreciated. Turtle Creek Olive Grove.
Nature’s bounty Local farm-to-table businesses enhancing tourism, quality of life Story by Ariel Lutnesky | Photos by Tom Holden Growing produce, raising animals — craft agriculture is a growing industry in more than one sense of the term. Bridget Symm, the owner of Bridget’s Basket in Hunt, said the industry is gaining popularity quickly.
Sue Schulse, who co-owns Turtle Creek Olive Grove with her husband, Dan, said that just being outdoors is a draw for many. Her business partly focuses on hospitality, hosting weddings and special events at their location along the water.
“It’s a big and wonderful industry, and it’s becoming a lot bigger,” Symm said. “There’s so much to it that people don’t really realize.”
“More and more people are living in cities and are looking to get away,” Schulse said. “They want to reconnect with nature, they want to know where their vegetables come from. ... You see so many big box products that come from elsewhere and I think (craft agriculture) gives people a greater sense of reassurance.”
Part of the reason of the industry’s growth has to do with the millennial generation, Symm said. She’s noticed that younger people seem to be more aware of the impact that city growth has on the environment and rural areas like Kerr County. “I think that generation, even more than mine, is more aware of it, and that awareness has created this popularity and this idea that we’re going to do better for our environment, do better for our food,” Symm said. “Produce sustainable vegetables and non-GMO stuff.”
14 BusinessLink • Month 2019
Having a hospitality element also helps offset the costs of maintaining a farm, said Schulse. The blend and wide variety of businesses — from brewers and vineyards to farms — that fall under the umbrella of craft agriculture makes it a hard term to define, Symm added. “I think it’s kind of ambiguous,” she said. “For those of

us that are in the industry, there’s a lot of opportunities to do a number of different things.” But local production seems to frequently go hand-inhand with craft agriculture, helping support the community economically through dollars staying within the area, Symm said. Schulse said it also can bring in more tourism. “It helps to build a community around the things that we value — clean food, healthy living, family activities, the things that we grew up with,” Symm said. According to Gil Salinas, the chief operation officer of the Kerr Economic Development Corporation, craft agriculture is one industry that sees a lot of economic promise in Kerr County. But Symm said that she’s seen some resistance in the Kerrville community as craft agriculture creeps further into the scene. The craft agriculture movement is spearheaded by the younger generation, while Kerrville has an older population. “The economic impact of craft agriculture could be significant, but I’m not entirely sure that it’s what Kerrville wants,” Symm said. “But on the positive, I think craft agriculture creates a community that people can be proud of. It creates a scope, a vision, that people can be happy with.” Dan Schulse noted that craft agriculture creates jobs, which is something he loves about the industry. But it’s important to remember that it takes a lot of hard work to keep up. “The one thing that you don’t ever get back is the investment of your time, as an owner or worker,” Symm said. “You have something that’s weather dependent, seasonal and really does require a lot of labor.”

Kerrville downtown farmers market is growing Story by Nancy Foster | Photos by Tom Holden There vendors of Kerrville Farmer’s Market Downtown have three things in common — the first being that they were hand-picked to offer farm-to-consumer direct fresh products for sale, the second being their respect and admiration for Justin and Katye Graham, directors of the market, and the third being genuine fondness for their Kerr County customers. As Dwain Cornelius of Mountain Home Farms puts it, “We have opportunities to go to other Friday markets but we choose to be in Kerrville.” Dwain has 30 or 40 regulars who stop by every couple of weeks to buy his specialty pickles, made with old family recipes dating back over 50 years. THE MARKET IS GROWING Kerrville Farmer’s Market Downtown has been a steady work
in progress for Justin and Katye Graham since its concept phase back in the spring of 2015. It has moved around a bit, starting out at exit 505 on Harper Road, then relocating to the downtown pavilion parking lot and and finally, in April 2018, to its current location at the A.C. Schreiner Mansion parking lot in. What sets this market apart is that it is yearround. The hours (4-7 p.m. from March to October and 3 p.m. to dark from November through February) seem to work, as does the location, as a crowd of over 300 come each week to shop for high quality, homegrown produce, jams, jellies, foodstuffs, beer, pizza and organic meats. Justin is so pleased with its steady growth that he envisions opening up the mansion grounds for additional usage and special events.

97TH ANNUAL CHAMBER CHOICE AWARDS BANQUET Josh Rayman of Bakery JoJu at a recent Farmers Market in downtown Kerrville. Live music encourages people to linger and listen as they shop. Some settle in at tables and chairs on the lawn while others hang out on the mansion’s front steps with a glass of Texas wine, farm-roasted coffee, or a Pint & Plow Brewing Co. craft beer. This is definitely a people-watching market where friends and neighbors meet and chat as they pore through the day’s selections. UNIQUE VENDORS The market is well laid out under tents shading each vendor’s enticing array of goods. Each purveyor is worth a stop and each one has a story behind their product. They all enjoy a amiable camaraderie with their regular customers, and many even do business with each other. Josh Rayman, who runs Bakery JoJu in Fredericksburg, buys ingredients from fellow vendors to make his wildly popular wood-fired specialty pizzas. Doing business with locals is very important to him, he says, because the quality is guaranteed. Josh’s booth is also coveted for artisan baked goods and crusty sourdough bread made using stone mill ground grains. For Lana and James O’Brien, owners of the 25-acre Visionquest Farm in Fredericksburg, the market time is perfect. “We come right after milking is done,” Lana says, referring to the 12 Nubian goats who produce gallons of fresh milk each day for use in their aromatic handcrafted soaps. Their 45 free-range chickens provide a steady source of fresh eggs that sell out quickly at each market. Wren’s Garden from Bandera is a big draw for customers. Grower Eileen Rogers has been gardening for nine years and specializes in Asian veggies and unique produce such as white squash and purple sweet potatoes. Specialty herbs grown for medicinal purposes include Bittermelon that is “known to lower blood sugar levels in Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes”. This enthusiastic lady says the market gives her social interaction. “I love to explain how to prepare my produce,” she says. “People love to try something new and

Craft agriculturalists at a recent Farmers Market in downtown Kerrville. Left: Eileen Rogers and Linda Hartfiel, Wren’s Garden. Right: Justin Graham, Zanzenberg Farm. Far right: Don Ramon, Innovative Industries LLC healthy.” Don Ramon of Boerne knows what makes a loyal customer. His Innovative Industries LLC booth stocks 11 specialty gourmet sauces, spreads and dips. “Once people try a product, they will come back,” he says of his line that includes chickpea spread, eggplant spread and jalapenobased Cowboy Snacks. He incorporates fresh lime and lemon juice as natural
ingredients into his certified acidified products. Market Director Justin Graham can be found at his Zanzenberg Farms booth where a steady stream of customers line up for ethically raised, pastured heritage pork chops, bacon, sausage and prime cut roasts. Word has spread that Justin’s pork is unbeatable. DOWNTOWN SUCCESS STORY Justin is pleased to be considered an asset to
downtown Kerrville. “We wanted to gather together organic farmers from the region; those who use non-chemical processes to grow and make products.” He sees craft agriculture as a movement that will continue as more and more people seek out healthy and safe foods. “Farmers are the basis of our civilization and our market is a chance for them to connect with the community,” he said. “It is a chance to celebrate good quality food while being an economic benefit to the community as a whole. Walt Koenig, President and CEO of the Kerrville
Area Chamber of Commerce, makes regular visits. “My wife and I look forward to Friday nights when we can stop by the market, buy healthy foods sourced by local producers and then enjoy an evening of shopping and dining downtown. The market is a definite asset.” Kerrville Farmer’s Market Downtown is located at 529 Water Street. Free parking is available in the city parking garage. www. kerrvillefarmersmarket.com.
