The Salvation Army’s Boys & Girls Club of Kerrville
What’s New in the Club? Asset of the Month: Equality & Social Justice
February 2013
Young person places high value on promoting equality and reducing hunger and poverty.
Life isn’t fair. The financial and socioeconomic hands some of us are dealt with are so varied and can effect us all differently. It is well known that people all over the world are persecuted or favored based on ethnicity, cultural beliefs, social and financial status, religious preferences, and lifestyle choices. Being that we are the Salvation Army, it is part of our mission to provide spiritual, emotional, and financial assistance without discrimination. This month’s asset provides opportunities to model and teach our youth the values of equality which past generations throughout history have tried and tried to instill: All men (and women) are created equal, we are all God’s children, and He loves us all. This is a chance to encourage our youth to honor the poor and to want to give generously with a humble heart. The uneven sharing of wealth can be frustrating, but a big part of being a Christ follower is sharing and helping those who have less. -Cara Bierschwale, BGC Director Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon. -Isaiah 58:10

How can we give our youth chances to promote equality and reduce poverty? As a family, sponsor a poor child from another country. Volunteer time at a shelter or food pantry. Model equal treatment of people of all races and lifestyles. Avoid using derogatory language about others. Schedule time monthly to make a generous donation of food, clothes, and supplies.
