Additionally, I do appreciate your support of being reelected to serve in this role for a second term. I will continue to provide our Brotherhood, our community and the national edition of The Sphinx with updates of KPL activities.

Here’s a resounding, congratulations to all the new and reelected executive board members. At the June 8 meeting, the new board was sworn into office by Bro. Dennis Kemp Sr., the former 25th Eastern Region Vice President and a past President of KPL. This edition will be the last KPL Sphinx until the Fall. Yet, please continue to provide me with interesting articles and photos throughout the summer break. ’06!

THE AFHC AND KPL PRESENT AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
On June 8, The Alpha Foundation of Howard County, Inc. (AFHC) and Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, held its Edward D. Young Scholarship and Recognition Awards Ceremony. The annual event was held on the campus of Howard Community College in Columbia. The ceremony honored several Howard County students along with awards of recognition for individuals that have supported the efforts of the foundation.
Each scholarship awardee received a framed certificate and funds for their future academic plans.
The keynote speaker for the program was Dr. James R. Calvin, Associate Professor and Director of the Leadership Development Program for Minority Managers at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Funding for the program was provided by the AFHC, with an additional financial contribution provided by Howard County General Hospital.

On June 3, The Alpha Foundation of Howard County, Inc. (AFHC) held its 7th Annual Golf Classic at the Timbers at Troy Golf Course in Elkridge, MD. Bro. Derrick Leak, Golf Classic Committee Chairman, thanks each Brother and their guests who came out to support the fund-raiser. He stated that the day starting off windy and rainy, but the weather eventually cleared. He looks forward to next year’s golf tournament and getting more Brother and sponsor participation.

The annual event was sponsored by the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society (HoCoPoLitSo). Included in the photo, are Bro. Barrett’s wife (2nd from left) and a friend, Eva Anderson. Bro. Barrett has served on the board of HoCoPoLitSo for more than 24 years. HoCoPoLitSo is a nonprofit organization supported in part by grants and donations from individuals and businesses. Bro. Charles I. Stokes, III (left) & Bro. Harry Evans, III attended the 21st Annual Wine In The Woods event held in Symphony Woods in Columbia. Bro. Evans is the Chairman of the Howard County Board of Liquor Commission.
On June 3, Bro. John Taylor and his wife, Gerry, attended the kickoff announcement in Columbia when Gubernatorial candidate Anthony Brown (Lt. Governor, MD) formally introduced his running mate, Howard County Executive Ken Ulman.
Juneteenth Program The Howard County Center of African American Culture Inc. presents “From Slavery to Freedom: The Trials and Tribulations of James Too” at 3:00 p.m. on June 23 at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way in Columbia. Alpha Achievers give back to the Howard Co. community Submitted by Bro. David H. Barrett and Bro. Brandon Barrett
Alpha Achievers from Long Reach High School (LRHS) work the donated book table The Alpha Achievers at LRHS also conducted a clothing drive. Sixteen Achievers graduated this year (2013) and all of them are headed to four-year from which books were distributed for free. The books were collected during a wellorganized drive at the school. Bro. Harvey Moran is the KPL advisor at Long Reach. colleges; the first time none of the graduates is starting at a two-year college. Thirty-two Achievers were enrolled in Advanced Placement courses. Those who took and passed the AP exam and earned a score of 3 (out of 5) or better, will get college credit for the course in most U.S. colleges and universities.

On May 14, the Alpha Achievers of Hammond hosted their first Induction and Senior Recognition Ceremony. The event also included a potluck dinner. It was a grand celebration that included the support of the Achievers and their parents. At the event, graduating seniors received a membership certificate and cords to wear during their graduation ceremony.
Some of the groceries collected by the Alpha Achievers at Hammond that were donated to the Domestic Violence Center of Howard County.
