AYS COULD TURN into weeks could turn into months before I felt marooned on this tropical island. Here my only problems are picking the best tide times to snorkel the sparkling blue water over the reef, when to settle in my favourite beach swing chair, and deciding the best spot to watch the sun’s rays paint the sky before it sinks below the ocean. At night, I fall asleep lulled by the gentle sounds of waves lapping a beach where the only footprints are mine. Concealed among the Keppel Group of islands, 14 kilometres off the Yeppoon coastline in the Southern Great Barrier Reef, Pumpkin Island is a hidden gem. Formerly famed as the XXXX Island, where the focus was more on the amount you could drink rather than the experiences you could have, this six hectares of paradise has been reborn as the ultimate getaway for couples, families or groups who want to have an island almost to themselves.
