Mid American Truck Show 2019 March 28, 29 30, 2019 was the dates for the world’s largest truck show held at the Kentucky Expedition Center, Louisville KY. We packed the vehicle for the long ride from the Midwest over to Kentucky, snacking ad soda from our cooler we figured the trip would go smooth and stops for fuel and bathroom breaks only. Rightttt, until we got into Illinois on I-74 near Peoria the road was very rough and then the roadwork began outside Peoria and around on 474. Starts and stops for several miles but at least we were moving. Once on the east side of Peoria we figured we were home free straight to Indy. Until we got just outside of Campaign, IL. The traffic was stopped for 10 plus miles heading east. We figured a big accident, not sure what we would find, but we were prepared. Both the wife and me are certified EMS and have had to work several accidents. Luckily we never came upond the accident but figured the stoppage would delay us several hours. We searched for a reroute, finally jumped on I-57 south to connect with I-64. The road was a good road and only put us behind about 1-½ hours. We did manage to see some sigts along the way.

Once in Louisville we headed straight to show to get set-up, to our surprise everything was onsite and we just had to organize and prepare for the VIP visit the following morning. Headed to the Wingate and drop our gear before grabbing a steak and a cold one at Logans.

Thursday, Arrived early for the show to get our badges and parking passes. While out in the south wing area and weather nice we went over to visit our good friends at the National Association of Show Trucks, we have been working with Chuck Kemner and the group for nearly 15 Years. What a great bunch of folks, if you have never visited with them you need to spend time with them. They have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to trucks, show trucks and truck shows. We didn’t connect with them but we did notice our new Logo on the NAST transport. The boss was beaming; a big smile came across her face, ear to ear.

See this is the kind of people we share with, we never expected they would give us a spot on the rig that goes to all the shows.

Tell Them you saw it on the Roadworx Digital Magazine

We stopped by the East wing to see our longtime client, Don Shields with Midwest CTI.

The wife has been working with Don for the best part of 30 years. Trying not to give away the ages. He is a great guy and sells awesome products.

We headed back to our booth as the crowd continued to file into the area. Of course our longtime neighbors were on site. PG Adams Inc. to one side and MUV-All Trailer to the other. Great bunch to be sandwiched between. On the way back to our booth we stopped by the Road Sknz Booth, they have a great setup in the registration area. It keeps them very busy. Friday at the show was very entertaining as the drivers and families began to roll by the booth. I managed to get outside and get some of the show truck pictures. What a wonderful collection of trucks. Please enjoy the photo’s and remember your welcome to take any you would like.

U.S. Trailer Orders Continue to drop in February, Down 29% Y/Y US trailer order volume came in below previous year volume for the third straight month in February, but OEMs still booked nearly 24,000 net orders during the month, according to this month’s issue of ACT Research’s State of the Industry: U.S. Trailer Report. Near-record backlogs have filled 2019 build slots for many OEMs, and there continues to be some resistance toward booking orders into next year.

www.DirectEquipmentSupply.com

“While demand remains, we’ve heard OEM receptivity toward orders is mixed,” said Frank Maly, Director–CV Transportation Analysis and Research at ACT Research. He continued, “Some are declining additional commitments, while other trailer manufacturers are accepting orders, but with pricing ‘to be determined,’ as a result of the uncertainty surrounding future component and material costs.” Additionally, Maly said, “Cancellation penalties have also entered the negotiations, as OEMs seek to both discourage speculative ordering and ensure that backlog ‘out-months’ remain firm.” Further, the report noted that ACT expects a slowing economy later in the year, likely resulting in lower freight rates and lower demand for freight transport. Meanwhile, cancellations remain near the top of the normal range, and the backlog-to-build ratio closed February at 8.2 months. ACT Research is recognized as the leading publisher of commercial vehicle truck, trailer, and bus industry data, market analysis and forecasting services for the North American and China markets. ACT’s analytical services are used by all major North American truck and trailer manufacturers and their suppliers, as well as banking and investment companies. More information can be found at www.actresearch.net. EXCITING NEWS FROM THE DOOR WORLD Yacht restoration facility fitted with bifold, hydraulic doors from Schweiss M.E. Yacht Restoration of Holland, Mich., wrapped up the second phase of construction last summer, completing its new 70,000-squarefoot, three-story state-of-the-art storage, restoration and office facility near Lake Michigan . The fully insulated building also features a couple of doors from Schweiss Doors.

hydraulic door.”

One Schweiss door is a 47-foot, 4-inch by 29-foot, 7-inch bifold automatic latching liftstrap door and the other is a 45-foot, 11-inch by 34-foot, 1-inch hydraulic door. Doors that large became necessary with the customers’ desire for bigger yachts. M.E. Yacht Restoration is on Lake Macatawa , near Lake Michigan .

“At first, I assumed the opening would be too big for a hydraulic door and ordered a bifold door,” Mike Evenhouse says. “A guy came in here who builds cylinders; he showed me photos and said, ‘Why don’t you get a hydraulic door?’ I called Schweiss and got the hydraulic door. I like the simplicity of the hydraulic door; less is more. I just love hydraulics. Both doors are very strong. I like the robustness of the way they are engineered. We considered other manufacturers, but they all wanted to install the door and to do so would have cost me almost as much as the door itself.”

“As our business has grown, the boats have gotten bigger,” says Mike Evenhouse, president of M.E. Yacht Restoration and M.E. Yacht Sales. Evenhouse got into the restoration business almost by accident. His brother-in-law bought a fixer-upper boat that was damaged in Hurricane Andrew. “I loved fixing and repairing them, but I was too picky, so when the boats were done, they were better than brand new, but they were older boats and I had a hard time recouping my money,” he says. “Boats damaged by saltwater just don’t pay. People would see what we did with these saltwater sunk boats and say, ‘Hey, can you buff my boat or fix the bottom?’ I learned so much because I was buying burnt, sunken trash boats, so working on normal stuff was like nothing. We learned the hard way. I always say that was my college education.” Evenhouse says he brings a different mentality to the restoration business and does more than just buffing or fixing bottoms. M.E. Yacht Restoration recently completed a $150,000 remodel of a 50foot Sea Ray Yacht, gutting the inside and putting in quartz countertops, teak floors and custom interiors.

When it came time to purchase doors for the new building, Mike Evenhouse scouted the Internet and was impressed with what Schweiss Doors had to offer.

Ultimately, the Evenhouses installed the door themselves. “It was relatively easy to install,” says Eric Evenhouse. “Mike was in construction for 20 years before this, working his way up from a grunt to president of the company. He was actually the general contractor on these projects and we had the tools and equipment to do it. The instructions were straightforward and clear cut; we got it together pretty quick and everything worked like the way it said it should. The speed of it going up and down is quicker than the bifold door. The bifold is a great door; the initial setup took just a little longer. They both work great, they lock nice and tight and keep the warm air in and the cold air out. We haven’t had any problems with either one and the doors arrived on time and in good condition.” Eric Evenhouse says Schweiss was responsive to questions and provided great installation instructions. “I took everything one step at a time,” he says. “Once you install a door … if we had to do it again, it would be a snap.”

“A lot of people don’t know about boats,” Evenhouse says. “We are almost like a concierge boat service. If a guy is spending a million bucks on a boat, to spend 30 grand a year to have us make sure it’s clean, detailed and all the maintenance done is kind of our niche. We build a relationship with people and customers stay with us and refer us to others once we win their trust.”

The new building allows enough room to keep all boats indoors, whether they are waiting to be worked on, being upgraded, cleaned or repaired or are about to be tested in the waters of adjacent Lake Macatawa , which connects directly to Lake Michigan . ME Yacht Restoration doubled the size of its storage space, which, depending on the size of the boats, could amount to about 100 boats.

Eric Evenhouse, operations manager at ME Yacht Restoration, says that led to business growth. “It always seemed that limitations were always height in these big buildings,” Eric Evenhouse says. “It gets kind of costly and hard on a boat when you have to disassemble hardtops, electronics and that sort of stuff. Both doors are used primarily for the same purpose, to get boats in and out. Over the years, Mike has learned that clearance is a big issue for getting the big boats in. We wanted to get into a different market, with the 70-plus footers. The hydraulic door was put in for more clearance, with it, we gained a good four feet. We really like the simplicity and speed of the

Mike Evenhouse says plans call for doubling the size of the new facility, depending on the economy. That would include a 60,000 square foot private boat condo with eight 50-foot by 150-foot deep units, each with its own hydraulic door.
