SALSA

By Maria V Cevallos

oming to the Howard Theater again on April 4th is one of salsa’s most celebrated ensembles, Puerto Rico’s el Gran Combo. An institution in their own right, el Gran Combo is a factory of talent, the so-called “Universidad de la Salsa”, of salsa singers and hit makers like Andy Montañez, and with more than 50 years in the salsa music scene, speak of their resolve to carry on making their distinct brand of rhythm, sound, and musical hits. Founded in May 26, 1962 and led up until today by the renowned pianist and composer Rafael Ithier, the band has recorded more than 60 albums throughout the span of their career. With skill and keenness, the group has maintained a patent sound that has evolved by adopting new techniques in recording and musical tendencies of the newer generations yet has carefully circumvented those that could erase or disrupt the Combo’s musical identity. The basis of their sound is simple, rhythmic, and lucid arrangements that everyone can enjoy. Retaining that ability has been a big part of el Gran Combo’s staying power. Throughout the years, el Gran Combo has put under their belt tremendous success including successful world-wide tours, nominations, and awards. The band’s first successes came after releasing

their first albums, Menéame los mango, El Gran Combo... de Siempre and Acángana, all released between 1962 and 1963 under Gema Records. These albums gave el Gran Combo their first push towards success in Latin America markets including Mexico, Panama, Venezuela, New York and subsequently, in Puerto Rico, were they earned their first Gold Record. They also entered an exclusive contract as the house band of a Puerto Rican television show “El Show de las 12” which made them even more recognizable and popular in Puerto Rico. The group started to tour various Latin American countries as well. The band continued to

prosper during the rest of the 1960s, earning an award for best band in 1969 despite line-up changes and perceived overexposure. It was during this decade that an iconic instrument was added along with a long-time member of the band, trombonist Fanny Ceballos, who was a member of the band from 1971 until his death in 1991 due to cancer. This and several line-up changes made the band gain momentum again despite fears that so many line-up changes could play with the band’s success. These fears dissipated, however, as during this decade, the band kept earning more and more awards, not only in their native Puerto Rico, but also in Venezuela and the United States. In 1973, the ensemble played to an audience of 50,000 people at Yankee Stadium in support of another famous band, Fania Allstars. During the 1980s and 1990s, the band continued to accumulate accolades and reach incredible landmarks in their careers. They celebrated their 20 year anniversary with a concert in Madison Square Garden

in 1982. In 1984, after a tremendous welcome in Alaska, the band released the album Breaking the Ice, which earned them their first Grammy nomination. During the new millennium, still celebrating even more milestones, the band continues to rack up successes. Two of their most recent albums were 2006’s Arroz con Habichuelas and 2010’s Sin Salsa No Hay Paraíso, which still produce hits. The band keeps working and producing music that just makes you want to get up and dance. Your chance to see this legendary band play live in DC is April 4th at the Howard Theater. URBAN

The Long Awaited Return of By: Malayna Butler

THE WORD “TEMPO” CONJURES UP IMAGES OF A PACE, A BEAT, A RHY THM – THE MEASUREMENT OF TIME.

Tempo as an artist, has had great success as a rapper, however, in a case of “art imitating life” and vice versa, Tempo had some missteps with the law that landed him in Federal prison in 2004. Tempo paid his dues and was released in late 2013. He didn’t skip a beat releasing music while incarcerated, and even was the center of a movement that began when other rappers united around his cause and released a song titled “Free Tempo” to support their friend. Although born in Puerto Rico, David Sanchez Badillo at the age of 5 moved to New York where he lived for 4 years with his family before returning to La Isla. At age 11 he started writing rap lyrics and in 1994 he joined El Escuadron del Panico. That partnership didn’t last long however, and soon Tempo started his solo career. He was one of the first artists to sign to Buddha Productions label in the late 1990s. The late “Buddha” who produced some of the most well known artists in the genre, could be described as Tempo’s best friend and was also incarcerated on similar charges. Buddha was released in 2003, however he later passed away in 2007 due to respiratory issues. The rapper and producer born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on September 25, 1977 has released multiple albums over the course of his career to include, “Game Over” (1999), “New Game” (2000), “Unplugged” (2001), “Exitos” (2002), “Free Tempo” (2009) and the highly anticipated “Free Music” in 2013. That was the year that he was also released from his detention after various stints in U.S. federal prisons on drug trafficking and illegal weapons charges. He was originally sentenced to 24 years commencing in June 2004, however, the sentence was later reduced to 10 years with a year of community service

and participation in a program to get him reintegrated into society. Tempo’s music touches on many of the issues that have personally surrounded him, as well as, social issues, politics, and street life. He has also become known as a controversial figure in the urban music community for airing disputes with other rappers. Upon Tempo’s release from prison and his return to Puerto Rico (for the first time in 10 years) on October 10, 2013, he was greeted by friends, family and his many fans at the Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport in San Juan. He was reportedly wearing a shirt with a large lion printed on it, Gucci glasses and had a Louis Vuitton bag. “¡Llegó la buena música!” (“Good music has come!’) “¡Se acabó el abuso!” (“The abuse has ended!”) “Ahora sí que hay justicia” (“Now there is finally justice”), “¡Déjalo respirar aire fresco!” (“Let him breathe fresh air!”). Those were just some of the shouts that were heard from fans during the welcome home. Rafael Castro Lang one of his lawyers confirmed that Tempo had plans to return to the studio. “Él va a reintegrarse a su trabajo de la música. Las casas disqueras le han hecho ofertas. Definitivamente, tiene planes para grabar un disco.” Tempo has collaborated with a variety of reggaeton and urban music artists and even the London Symphony Orchestra on “Porque Soy Tempo”. Other artists with

whom he has collaborated or who have included songs on his albums include Zion on “Dembow”, Tego Calderon “Mi Respeto”, Jowell y Rando on “Impresioname (Nueva Version), Hector “El Father” and Yomo on “Salgan”, Daddy Yankee on “Talento de Un Barrio Fino”. He has also worked Barrington Levy and Fat Joe on perhaps the most well known song in which artists from the urban movement spoke out in support of his liberation “Free Tempo”. He has most recently worked with Plan B and Arcangel on the “Candy (Remix)”. Despite the many issues surrounding Tempo, he has remained strong in the urban scene even releasing music while in prison. However, his fans have waited long enough and are ready to see him return to the stage. You can catch Tempo live at CocoCabana Nightclub in Hyattsville, MD on May 30th, 2014. JOEL ALEXIS MUÑOZ MARTÍNEZ AND RANDY ARIEL ORTIZ ACEVEDO HAVE BEEN TAGGED “LOS MÁS SUELTOS DEL REGGAETÓN”, LITERALLY MEANING THE WILDEST IN THE GENRE OF REGGAETÓN.

Google “Jowell y Randy” and you will find that they are strikingly colorful and have a style that is all their own – they appear to be energetic and rather animated. They’re not afraid to radically change their hairstyles, wearing looks that range from cornrows to mohawks. Among their studio albums are “Casa de Leones” (2007), “Los Mas Sueltos del Reggaetón” (2007), “El Momento” (2010), “Sobredoxis” (2013) and this year “Casa de Leones 2” (with J King & Maximan and Guelo Star). On Sobredoxis they experimented with the tribal genre that is rising in popularity on the track “Bailalo A Lo Loco”. This duo collaborated with De La Ghetto on the song “Chulo Sin H” That’s an inside joke for those who speak Spanish, they clearly have a sense of humor! On their website, currently promoting the “Sobredoxis” album, Jowell y Randy are seen dressed up as mad scientists in a lab concocting some potion or another, no doubt a metaphor for their work in the studio. With their sense of humor, Jowell & Randy add a refreshing spark to the genre in which artists can seem hard and unapproachable. Their tunes are sexy and catchy and their style is pretty versatile as they continue to experiment. I am quite fond of “Perreame” and the hit recorded with J Balvin “Sin Compromiso”. In addition to names such as Daddy Yankee, Arcangel, Farruko, Baby Rasta y Gringo they’re also not afraid to collaborate with lesser known artists such as Tony Tun Tun on “Lo Que Te Gusta” and “Dale Pal Piso” with Watusi. In addition, they recorded “Bellaco con Bellaca” with Ñengo Flow and have been affiliated with hitmaking record labels such as Live Music, WY Records, Machete Music, White Lion Records and Warner Brothers Records. Jowell & Randy have made appearances in the DMV in the past pero esta vez que no te lo cuenten! Your chance to get an overdose of them yourself is on Friday, April 4 at The Palace in Woodbridge, VA. ROCK

By: Eric Cortes

By: Maria V Cevallos

IN 1983, JORGE GONZALEZ, ALONG WITH HIS BANDMATES MIGUEL TAPIA AND CLAUDIO NAREA, FORMED WHAT WAS TO BECOME ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL LATIN AMERICAN ROCK BANDS OF THE 80S. Los

Prisioneros, led by Gonzalez, became one of the most influential bands not only in their native Chile, but also all of Latin America. Heavy on political and anti-establishment themes, Los Prisioneros had a rebellious streak reflective of the time they rose to popularity. Chile was under the oppressive dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet, a regime characterized by suppression and persecution of governmental dissenters, as well as, a cultural repression in which Los Prisioneros were specifically targeted with censorship by Pinochet’s regime. With such formidable adversaries, it is no wonder Jorge Gonzalez has continued being the rebellious and innovating figure that he continues to be today. As schoolmates in a high school in Santiago de Chile, Miguel, Claudio and Jorge formed Los Prisioneros after the disbanding of two previous separate bands they belonged to and coming back together graduating high school. After unexpectedly dropping out of college, Claudio and Jorge decided to focus on Los Prisioneros and in 1984, they released their first album “La Voz de los ‘80”. The album had minimal success in Chile initially, with only their songs, “Sexo”, reaching the music rankings. During 1985, the band signed to EMI and with this support, started playing more shows and their audience grew.

In 1986, the band released “Pateando Piedras”, their second album. The album had much success, selling 5000 copies in the first ten days of release and reaching platinum status within 2 months, a first for a band from Chile. In November 1986, the band played their biggest show yet in the Estadio Chile for an audience of 11,000 people. Songs like “Porque no se va?”, “Muevan las industrias” were in the album as well as “El Baile de los que Sobran”, the song that propelled them to international recognition as they had charted in countries like Peru and Ecuador, where more than one of their songs became top ten. As the band grew in popularity, so did internal problems inside the band. By 1990, after reaching wide-spread popularity all throughout South America and Mexico, being invited to such music festivals as Chateau Rock Festival in Argentina, another festival in Uruguay, and having one of the first videos being broadcast in MTV Latino, the band decided to relocate base to the US. The band had released “La cultura de la basura” in 1987, an album that reflected the internal strife within the band, which started when Jorge had disagreements with Lyon Caco, the producer of the album, who left the job to his assistant Antonio Gildemeister. The album did not reach the success that the previous album had. Despite this, the band catapulted themselves into touring, but the seed for the disbandment of Los Prisioneros had already been planted. In 1989, Jorge travelled to Los Angeles and met with famed producer and musician Gustavo Santaolalla,

who agreed to become the band’s producer for what would become the band’s fourth album, “Corazones”. That was all she wrote, since Corazones included their biggest and most recognizable hit to date, “Tren al Sur”. The album was a change for the band in not only sound but also in method. The album was mostly Gonzalez’. Tapia and Narea were left out of much of the recording and the composing as they were not able to travel to the US. The album’s sound focused more on the keyboard as the main instrument with a heavy electronic vibe. The album was a success but internal problems led Claudio to leave the band first, and despite having tremendous success, even attending the Viña del Mar festival, a privilege not possible before because of the Pinochet regime, Los Prisioneros decided to disband in 1992. The band reunited twice and released more albums, but officially disbanded again in 2005. As a solo artist, Jorge Gonzalez has had several musical projects throughout the years including releasing several of his own albums and a techno pop duo with his then-wife Loreto Otero called Los Updates. Currently, Jorge tours and performs songs from his own repertoire in addition to playing many of the Los Prisioneros hits. The DC area is in for a Prisioneros treat, as Jorge Gonzalez will be performing a largely “Los Prisioneros” set in a very special show on April 18 at the State Theatre in Falls Church, VA. Tickets are on sale now at www.tickeri.com. █

ROCK

By: Rosario Garcia

any things were happening in the mid-1960’s. The Beatles came to America, civil rights activists were protesting, and the sexual revolution was underway. In Mexico City, a revolution in music was underway and El Tri was at the helm. Mexicans wanted to rock and roll and they wanted it now. Founded in 1968 as Three Souls in My Mind, the group, better known now as “El Tri,” is regarded as influential in the development of Mexican rock and roll music. Not just any rock, El Tri’s frontman, Alex Lora wanted to sing the blues. Heavily inspired by American rock and roll bands, El Tri was initially named “Three Souls in My Mind” because, as Alex Lora shared in an interview, “We had to have a long name, every band back then had a long name: Creedence Clearwater Revival, Silver Messenger Service etc.).” As Three Souls in My Mind the band performed mainly covers of famous English rock and roll and blues songs. However, while performing at the Festival de Avandaro,

often referred to as “Mexico’s Woodstock,” the band made a decision to switch to Spanish in the middle of their set. From them on, they recorded mainly in Spanish and began writing their own songs. When asked about the sudden change, Alex Lora shared that it was important for the audience to understand the messages of the songs. Although Mexican fans approved of the new Spanish songs, they did not approve of the long name and started calling the band “El Tri”, forcing the band to officially change their name in 1985. In 1985, El Tri released “Simplemente” which contained “Triste Cancion (Sad Song),” “Violencia, Drogas, y Sexo,” and “Metro Balderas”. The album was hugely popular and changed the name of the game for El Tri, it connected with a young audience who needed a band that represented their daily struggles. When the album became certified Gold it opened the doors for El Tri to become known outside of Mexico. They fist ventured to Peru after their song “Vicioso” became a hit there and they were asked to perform at several festivals in a 7-city tour.

Alex Lora is one of the most voracious writers in Mexican music having written songs for a whooping 45 albums. Alex takes his role as the voice of the Mexican “rocanrol” urbano scene very seriously often taking advice from fans about what topics to write/sing about. In an interview with Batanga in 2006, Alex Lora said, “the fans, they tell me, ‘Hey, write the song of the Pope! Hey, write the song of Che Guevara! Write the song of truck drivers, write the song of taxi drivers, of how it would be if Mexico won the soccer World Cup, write the song of prostitutes...’” and he complies, so that their audience may “feel they wrote it themselves”. Another theme that appears often in El Tri’s music is the idea of “No te olvides de la banda” (don’t forget about the band). Essentially, it means “don’t sell out”. “Don’t forget about the band, not even if you cut your hair, get a job, wear a threepiece suit, get married, or get liposuction. Don’t forget about the band,” are some of the lyrics of the song in their 2002 album by the same name.

I had the opportunity to finally see El Tri live in Mexico City during a Vive Latino festival and let me tell you, these guys can really rile up a crowd. Their blend of psychedelic, acoustic rock and blues makes you want to grab a mezcal and rock your troubles away. After over 45 years in the industry, and 45 albums to show for it, El Tri’s most recent effort, “Ojo por Ojo” (2013) garnered critical attention and was nominated for a Latin Grammy under, “Mejor álbum latino de música rock, urbana o alternativa”. El Tri celebrated by hosting their 45-year anniversary party in a 5-hour concert in their beloved “Chilangolandia” (slang term for Mexico City). On the tails of their recent success and 45 year celebration, El Tri are going on tour and will be making a stop here in the DMV area on May 19th for a special show at the Palace. LATIN ALTERNATIVE

/ APRIL 2014

By: Ellen Flores

That sensation of being enraptured with the music that is playing around you, pulsing in your veins and swaying your body in movements that flow freely and naturally. It’s that one moment where you don’t think, you react to and the music as it seduces you to be part of an explosion of sounds and emotions. That moment, is Los Amigos Invisibles. The Venezuelan group that is anything but invisible, they are an explosion of sound, colors and emotion. This month, join us on the dance floor and loose all your stress with Los Amigos Invisibles at the Howard Theatre on Saturday, April 19, 2014. With their unmistakably addictive melodies, Los Amigos Invisibles have been bringing their unique blend of sounds to the masses since 1991. Their sound is not just music. It is known as the Venezuelan Gozadera. With a blend of jazz, merengue, acid, rock, samba and of course, funk (who doesn’t love funk?!), Los Amigos Invisibles have been bringing back the dance party lifestyle to rockero clubs from Caracas to Barcelona and all around the globe all these years. You could even say that they have reinvented the way Latinos party.

Out of all the accolades we can mention, the most outstanding one is that the band still has their original lineup. Yes, Los Amigos are actually amigos and still going strong after 20 years. Each member has a defined role in la gozadera that is Los Amigos’ music and without them it would never be the same. Julio Briceño (Chulius) is like a snake charmer, seducing the masses with his sultry and intoxicating voice. José Luis Pardo (DJ Afro) is the genius behind the six strings and also the author of the words so many of us have used as a line to seduce a member of the opposite sex (even if it’s for one night of dancing). Armando Figueredo (Odnam) tickles the keys, adding so much flair and show. Mauricio Arcas (Maurimix) keeps the beat going with congas and percussion that take over your dance moves. José Rafel Torres (Catire) is the heart of Los Amigos with his funky and slapping bass lines that command the room and thump over your very own heartbeat. Finally, you have Juan Manuel Roura (Mamel) on the drums and percussion keeping the tempo in check and the party going. When these guys get together and step on stage their performance is a magical sensation. Los Amigos Invisibles are infectious energy and they spread their messages of joy, fun, sex and celebration at every show giving their fans every ounce of energy they can humanly give. The lights, the lasers and the energy are just

part of the elements that make Los Amigos Invisibles a living example of showmanship and craft. Some call it flirting, others call it cachondeo. Whatever the term, the fact is that these songs cross those fine lines between sex, seduction and suggestion in a brilliantly addictive way. Listen to “Cuchi Cuchi”, “Mentiras” and “Stay” and you will understand exactly what I’m talking about. On the other hand, songs like “La Que Me Gusta”, “Amor” and “Ultra-Funk” explore that sentiment of falling in love and celebrate that feeling. Songs like “Sexy”, “Ponerte en Cuatro” and “Sueño Erotico” are the perfect excuse for unleashing your inner funk god and get primal on the dance floor with someone you know or just met. It’s all about feeling the music and being free to be happy. A night with Los Amigos Invisibles will always leave you ramped up, ready to go and wanting more. Come be a part of the Venezuelan gozadera de Los Amigos Invisibles this Saturday, April 19, 2014 at The Howard Theatre in Washington DC. For tickets and information visit www. tickeri.com. █

Although his thriving music career led him away from mechanics, his passion for cars never died. He is an avid drag racer and had dreams of joining NASCAR and becoming the youngest Latino racecar driver. Don Omar’s racing talent also earned him a spot in Fast Five (Fast and Furious 5) alongside Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. His longtime friend, Tego Calderon also made an appearance in the film. LOVE HER OR HATE HER, ONE DOES NOT SIMPLY FEEL AMBIVALENT ABOUT MEXICO’S DIVA OF POP AND ALTERNATIVE, GLORIA TREVI. OUTSPOKEN, CONTROVERSIAL AND REBELLIOUS, TREVI HAS BEEN PUSHING BUTTONS AND HAS MAINTAINED HER NOTORIET Y IN LATIN MUSIC FOR 28 YEARS AND COUNTING, WITH OVER 20 MILLION RECORDS SOLD WORLDWIDE. COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS THE MEXICAN MADONNA, TREVI HAS BEEN AN ICON FOR FASHION AND POP CULTURE AND CONTINUES TO SURPRISE FANS WITH HER EDGY PERFORMANCES AND PROVOCATIVE AND INTENSE LYRICS. Born in 1968 in Monterrey, Mexico, Trevi had an interest in music and the arts at a young age. Despite her mother’s objections, she left home at age 12 and moved to Mexico City by herself to pursue her dreams of making it big in entertainment. Trevi supported herself by doing various odd jobs and also by singing and dancing in the streets. Her career began to take shape when she met her future manager and producer, Sergio Andrade, at age 16 in 1984. This was the beginning of both great success and scandal; marked by a toxic relationship that skyrocketed and nearly destroyed her career.

Trevi released her 1989 debut album Que Hago Aqui? The album was an instant success and had the number one single Dr. Psiquiatra. Trevi’s second album Tu Angel de la Guarda, released in 1991, was even more successful than her debut and set Trevi on a trajectory to be considered one of the most important young artists in Mexico. In addition to number one hits and successful record sales, Trevi starred in the film Pelo Suelto and began making a name for herself in Mexican cinema. Trevi’s third studio album, 1992’s Me Siento tan Sola, was one of the most successful in her career and propelled her into international markets as she began extensive tours and promotion in Latin America, Spain and the United States. During these years, Trevi distinguished herself as an international star with her unique voice, lyrics and spectacles during live performances that stood in stark contrast to other stars during the early 90s. From this point until 1996, Trevi released two more highly acclaimed studio albums, and appeared in two more Mexican films. Something I love about Trevi is the rawness of her songs; as they show the good, bad and ugly sides of

life. She also never hesitates to call out and mock hypocrisies and double standards. Her lyrics drip with her own personal struggles and triumphs, and have relatable messages of dealing with criticism, societal expectations of femininity and abusive relationships. The hit song Pelo Suelto is still a classic, with the message of owning being different and never losing confidence when going against the grain. Or Virgen de las Virgenes which mocks girls who are sanctimonious about their “purity,” when in fact they are not so innocent themselves. Ya No! attacks machismo, with Trevi’s signature raspy and powerful voice singing, “I want my freedom” and “listen to me, you are not deaf!” Trevi proclaims she will do what she wants, despite expectations to obey a man, marry and give up her own ambitions as a ‘decent’ woman should. Hoy Me Ire de la Casa is undoubtedly the story of Trevi leaving her home, and her response to the criticism along the way. Todos Me Miran is the ultimate middle finger to haters, and is a song I know I (and many others) have rocked out to at full blast more than once! When it seemed like things could not get any better for Trevi, her success came to a crashing halt in 1998. An ex bride of Trevi’s manager accused him of alleged kidnapping, rape, and other illegal activity which also dragged Trevi’s name in the mud. Trevi always alleged she was falsely accused, and was found not guilty and freed of all charges against her 5 years later. During these 5 years, Trevi gave birth to her first son and wrote an autobiography in which she described over a decade of abuse and exploitation at the hand of her ex manager. Although this all sounds like a bad telenovela plot, this was Trevi’s life and like they say, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Gloria Trevi, did the opposite of what people would have expected. Rather than hide and run away from the scandal, she was determined to revive her career

and immediately returned to the studio and resumed touring. Trevi’s later albums show a different and softer side of her, while still maintaining her undeniable edginess. Her later songs speak more about romantic love and also center on female empowerment and survival. Despite her personal struggles, Trevi has managed to hold her own as an artist, still with relevance and influence. In 2013, Trevi also returned to her beloved telenovelas, landing a starring role in “Libe Para Amarte” a soap opera on Televisa produced by Emilio Larrosa and she also managed to write music. Trevi’s latest release, De Pelicula, which she describes as, “a ticket to a multicinema where they will be able to enjoy an action movie converted into music and song. They will be able to enjoy a horror movie, love, passion, tragedy, and comedy too.” Don’t miss a chance to see this iconic diva, Gloria Trevi, live on May 30th at Echostage in DC! LIVE SHOW

By: Darlene Campos

ingling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey has been considered “the greatest show on earth” since their merge in 1919. Prior to the circuses merging, the Ringling Brothers Circus and Barnum and Bailey Circus were two separate companies but then joined together to create the ultimate circus experience for audiences all over the United States and in Mexico. Currently, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus is in its 143rd tour called “Built to Amaze.” The Built to Amaze experience brings surprise and wonder to delight audiences with over the top feats of strength, agility and courage. Circus performers from across the globe create the perfect blend of athleticism and bravery, where power

meets fearlessness and amazement has no bounds. Magnificent elephants, ferocious tigers, astonishing acrobats and aweinspiring aerialists are engineered into one spectacular performance. In addition to witnessing an engaging show, those who attend have the option to make their circus experiences even more unforgettable. The “All Access PreShow” gives audience members the option to go behind the scenes of the circus. Attendees have the opportunity to try on circus costumes, learn tricks, have a meet and greet with the performers, and take pictures with the clowns. There is also a chance to win a pachyderm painting which is trunk painted by a circus elephant right before the winner’s eyes. The “All Access Pre-Show” is one hour before the main performance begins and there is no additional charge since it is included in

the price of the admission ticket. Certain All Access Pre-Shows offer an Animal Open House, which is a chance to meet the elephants an hour and a half prior to the main show. However, the elephant meet and greet is not available for all performances, so it is recommended to check on the circus’s website if an “Animal Open House” is taking place. The Built to Amaze experience brings a modern flare of twists and turns where excitement and suspense are so intense you’ll be tempted to cover your eyes. From the blueprints to the band, the crates to the clowns, the hammer to the high wire, witness the spectacle as Built to Amaze measures out the perfect mix of marvel and majesty in an imagination equation where the impossible comes to life. Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus constantly tours in all 50

states and in Mexico as well, but from March 20th to March 23rd 2014, the circus will be making a stop in Washington, DC. In addition, from April 9th to April 20th 2014, the circus will be performing in Fairfax, VA. All ages are welcome to see “the greatest show on earth.” Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey offers 100% free admission tickets to children who are age two and under to provide these young kids with their first circus experience. Admission tickets for both the Washington, DC and Fairfax, VA performances start as low as $15, but ticket fees may vary depending on demand and the market seller. FOOD

By: Sarah Barrie

Panas opened its doors in Dupont Circle in the summer of 2010, and in Bethesda the following summer. According to its owner, Buenos Aires native, Federico García- Lopez, the inspiration to open Panas initially came from his wife, who having been born in Brazil to a Colombian mother and Argentine father had a very multicultural upbringing. Federico wanted to take this idea of multiculturalism and incorporate it into the concept behind his cuisine by fusing foods of different Latin American cultures. He also wanted to create a brand concept that represented the growing Hispanic culture in the US and the fusion of their Latin roots with American culture. “One of the things we’re trying to do is

create a brand that is more than food”, says Fede, “to create an experience, one that is centered around cultural events, and showcases music as a part of Latin American culture for both Hispanic and non-Hispanic cultures. ”The goal is to feel in touch with Latin American culture. “ Panas takes pride in its healthy menu options. All Panas menu items are made from all natural, fresh organic ingredients. Everything is baked, and never fried or microwaved. Panas even provides nutritional information for its menu items. You can really taste the quality and freshness of the ingredients in every bite. When I first walked into Panas Gourmet Empanadas, the first thing I noticed was its cozy atmosphere. The walls were lined with bottles of Malbec, and in the background were the soft tunes of Vicentico, followed by music by Juan Luis Guerra and Michel Teló. I was served a generous portion of empanadas of all different types, and each was labeled with initials baked into

their crust. Biting into each one was like unwrapping a small baked gift. The empanadas had a home baked fresh taste, and reminded me a lot of the empanadas I used to eat in Buenos Aires, but with more diverse flavors and taste. One of my favorite empanadas I tried was the Chicken, Pesto Sauce. Made from scratch and filled with juicy chunks of chipped chicken and fresh tomato, this empanada was different from any I had ever tasted. It had the perfect combination of flavors. Another favorite was the Steak and Chipotle Sauce empanada, also made from scratch was filled with mouth-watering cubes of grilled steak, and long strips of onion. One of my favorites from the vegetarian menu was the Eggplant, Mushroom, and Mozzarella empanada. I didn’t think I would say this, but I found it to be every bit as tasty as the meat empanadas. To accompany my empanadas, I was served a side of crispy plantain chips,

various dipping sauces and a glass of Lulo, a popular Colombian citrus fruit drink to wash it down. Aside from empanadas, Panas also serves a variety of Latin tapas. The ceviche and Argentine chorizo with plantains are customer favorites. To further enhance your dining experience, Panas offers live music from 6-9pm on Thursdays and Saturdays at the Bethesda locale, and Tuesdays and Saturdays in Dupont Circle. Guests can dine as they enjoy listening to live Bossa Nova, Tango, Latin Jazz, and Salsa music. Panas Gourmet Empanadas is an experience you definitely don’t want to miss. To experience Panas for yourse you may visit them in Dupont Circle at 2029 P ST. NW, or in Bethesda at 4731-A-Elm St. For more information, visit them online at http://panasgourmet.com/. █

ECHOSTAGE LINEUP

By: Rosario Garcia

WHEN I FIRST BROWSED CRISTOPOLIS’ WEBSITE AND DISCOVERED HE HAD A TAB TITLED “PHILOSOPHY,” I KNEW THIS WOULDN’T BE A T YPICAL INTERVIEW. A LOCAL LATIN HIPHOP MC, CRISTOPOLIS WAS WARM AND WELCOMING TO A NEWCOMER LIKE ME WHO KNEW VERY LITTLE ABOUT HIP-HOP, REGGAETON, MOOMBAHTON AND DANCE MUSIC GOING IN. WHEN WE STARTED THE INTERVIEW HE SHARED SOME EXCITING NEWS, “I JUST RELEASED A NEW SONG A FEW MINUTES AGO, I GOT IT FROM THE ENGINEER AND POSTED IT DIRECTLY TO MY SITE, NOBODY IS DOING ANY THING LIKE THIS, IT’S INCREDIBLE…IT’S SUPER HOT.” The track titled “Duro” is a hardhitting EDM trap beat produced by Bones El Galactico and also featuring MC Ceja from Miami. Later after I heard the song, I caught the futuristic vibe he was referring to, the fast electronic beats make the song sound very spacey and fresh. The track took 3-4 months to produce and was a result of Cristopolis tirelessly searching for beats (which he claims he does 24/7 even when he sleeps!) and finding one that he loved. Duro was mixed by Anunakid and was recorded at DC VISIONS studio. Cristopolis’ diverse upbringing (he’s Chilean-Guatemalan) played a huge role in how he relates to music now, “I was born and raised in Arlington and I went to Falls Church High School. I’m part of the original Falls Church hustlers,” he shares, “Eventually though, I went abroad to Chile to finish High School where things were more quiet. There I blossomed within Hip-hop culture getting heavily involved in graffiti and freestyle rapping.” The young Cristopolis was in a bit of a culture shock after realizing that, “the kids in Chile had never heard of Hip-Hop before except maybe Public Enemy or the Beastie Boys,” he shared. Having experimented with Djing since the 8th grade (a hobby he says he started to impress girls), Cristopolis took it upon himself to school the Chileans on artists like Cypress Hill, Snoop Doggy

Dog, and the Wu-Tang Clan. “I eventually got invited to work at clubs which is where I first started to MC,” Cristopolis remembers, “It was like a karaoke at first, I would MC covers of other artists, but eventually, I got really into it and wanted to do my own thing.” In Chile, Cristopolis was close friends with other local aspiring artists some of which have become household names, such as Ana Tijoux and Tiro de Gracia, “I moved back to DC and went to college to pursue my degree in philosophy, but sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I had stayed.” Now, Cristopolis is a figure in both the local and international Latin Hip-Hop scene. He runs www.Latinhiphop.co, which connects artists from across the globe and provides a space for sharing music. “Music is like your business card. The important thing is to get your name out there. With today’s technology, people will find a way to download your music illegally. I’d rather give my music out in high quality for free,” he shared. Cristopolis says he makes money by touring and from royalties for collaborating with other artists. Cristopolis doesn’t typically perform at clubs, he favors cultural events, festivals, and colleges and universities. When he tours he brings a congo player, a DJ, dancers, and a female and male singer to accompany him,“I rap live, I don’t believe in backing vocal tracks, I like the old-school hip-hop thing of a real performance. Even with recording, I don’t punch in, it’s all recorded in one take.” Another thing Cristopolis favors is rapping in Spanish, “I found the Latin audiences to be more receptive to my sound. I think it’s because I mix everything into my

music, dem bow, international sounds, and even Indian music!” Unlike many urban artists, Cristopolis keeps his music clean, “I never curse in my songs. You can play my music for anyone, your parents or whomever. I want to make people think about all facets of life, to appreciate the fact that we live in an incredible time. I want my music to encourage people to follow the things they want to do, and tell them, ‘you can do it.’” The future has no limits for Cristopolis as he continues to work tirelessly to get his name out there. Even as he talked about recently releasing Duro, he was already focusing on his next single titled “Get Money” with Carolyn Rodriguez from Dope House Records, “It’s a got a real Indian vibe. I think it’s hot,” he shares. In 2014, Cristopolis will also be focusing on releasing some music videos. For updates and information on this one-of-a-kind HipHop loving filosofo, stay tuned to www. cristopolis.com. █

Brought to Life in Diego Luna’s Latest Film By: Darlene Campos

ésar Chávez is probably the best known Civil Rights activist of Latino descent. With that said, he’s fairly unknown for those outside the Latino culture. Recently, Diego Luna who directed the film along with the help of producers, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Pablo Cruz, went to East Los Angeles and stood on César Chávez Blvd asking people if they knew who César Chávez was. The results were abysmal (he finally finds someone who knows he was an activist for migrant workers near the very end, so there’s hope). Chávez, a migrant worker himself, died in 1993 at the age of 66, but his legacy is very much alive and is currently being revived by this biopic based around his life. Luna, better known for his acting roles in Frida, Milk, Rudo y Cursi, and Y Tú Mamá También is also an accomplished director. Michael Peña, a Mexican-American actor, plays Chávez in the film. Peña has previously starred in Gone in Sixty Seconds, Walkout, Babel, and American Hustle. American Ferrera, best known for her title role in the television show Ugly Betty, stars as Helen Chávez, Chávez’s wife. Academy Award winner John Malkovich stars as the owner of a grape farm and an opponent to Chávez’s activism. The cast rounds out with Rosario Dawson as Dolores Huerta. Michael Peña, who was born in Chicago, shared with news outlets that he knew almost nothing about César Chávez prior to taking the role, however, his father who was a farmer in Mexico prior to emigrating to the United States, almost wept when he found out his son would be playing César Chávez. The film’s plot tells the story of Chávez’s organization of 50,000 Californian farm workers who were mostly called ‘braceros,’ meaning they were temporary Mexican workers who were legally allowed to work in the United States, but had to return to Mexico as soon as

their work was complete. The conditions for farm workers were brutal and they often found themselves surrounded by racism and discrimination by local Californians. To address these issues, Chávez founded a labor union called the United Farm Workers (UFW ). However, not everyone was a supporter of Chávez’s ideas and his efforts were frequently met with strong opposition, sometimes even with violence. The film will outline Chávez’s campaigns, such as the Salad Bowl Strike, the Delano Grape Strike, and the 1975 Modesto March. Keir Pearson, a screenwriter, known for his film Hotel Rwanda, obtained the rights to Chávez’s life in 2011, and began writing the screenplay. Pearson had the screenplay reviewed by Chávez’s own family and incorporated little known stories about Chávez told by his relatives into the script. The film is set to be released nationwide officially on March 28th, however it will be playing in Regal and AMC theatres throughout the DMV area starting on March 27th. RECORD STORE DAY, A MOVEMENT WHICH BEGAN IN 2008, FOCUSES ON THE BEAUT Y OF INDIE RECORD STORES, ONES WHICH ARE OWNED BY PEOPLE – NOT BY OTHER RETAILERS. THE IDEA FOR RECORD STORE DAY WAS BORN WHEN A GROUP OF RECORD STORE OWNERS AND THEIR EMPLOYEES WANTED TO CELEBRATE THEIR BUSINESSES. IN THE UNITED STATES ALONE, THERE ARE ABOUT 1,000 INDIE RECORD STORES. WHAT STARTED OUT AS A SMALL CELEBRATION IS NOW CELEBRATED NOT JUST BY INDIE RECORD STORES IN THE UNITED STATES, BUT ALSO IN EVERY CONTINENT EXCEPT ANTARCTICA. The day is filled with special concerts, body and face painting, cook-offs, meet and greets with independent artists, parades, disc jockeys, and much more. The first Record Store Day occurred on April 19, 2008 at Rasputin Music in San Francisco, California. It was opened by the legendary heavy metal band, Metallica. The success was immense and from that point on, Record Store Day now takes place on every third Saturday in April. Record Store Day, like Christmas, only happens once a year, but that doesn’t mean the organization is relaxed during the rest of the seasons. Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton are the current managers of the Record Store Day process. They also work

alongside Michael Bunnell and Eric Levin to bring a successful day every year. With promotions organized throughout the year which include contests, musical releases, and prizes, you can celebrate your love for vinyls all year long! Thousands of indie record stores will be participating in Record Store Day throughout the entire world this April 19th, 2014. Likewise, many cities will be having their own local celebrations. Washington D.C. has 16 stores which will be a part of Record Store Day. A few of these local stores are Smash! Records, Joint Custody, which was voted by the Washington City Paper as the “best place to buy vinyl”, and Crooked Beat Records. If you’re a music fan, you should definitely not miss this awesome celebration. Also our friends at Nacional Records shared that they will have vinyls available for Sr. Flavio and Ana Tijoux available for this special celebration. Make sure to check these out! 2014’s Record Store Day is slated to take place on Saturday, April 19th. For more information about Record Store Day and a full list of participating stores, please visit www.recordstoreday.com. █

ALBUM REVIEWS

ANA TIJOUX—VENGO

By: Juan Leon

French-Chilean artist Ana Tijoux’s latest (her last proper solo release was 2011’s La Bala) album is a striking, energetic whirlwind of hip-hop (“Delta”), Andean folk (“Vengo”) and underground Latino genres. Though this is clearly not a straight up dance record, the shadows of the exploding underground global dance scene (moombahton, kuduro, bass) are in the background throughout the album. Tijoux herself has been hyped mildly for the consumption of US audiences (to endorse her, establishment rock mags focus on her empowerment politics, the fact that Thom Yorke dug her 2009 LP 1977, and that 1977’s self-titled single was featured on Season 4 of “Breaking Bad”) Tijoux’s Vengo deserves more than the head-pat delivered by Rolling Stone mag clones. Musically, lyrically, and thematically complex, Vengo is poetic from the sound up. Drawing beautifully from the modern global music diaspora, Vengo’s tasteful, collage-style production complements Tijoux’s gentle, melodic flow. Triumphant, a joy to listen to, and socially conscious, Vengo feels like a golden age De La Soul record. “Emilia”, one among many of Vengo’s absolute gems, collides ballad with hip-hop, past with present, male with female, rap with song. Many artists mesh ideas, genres, and rhythms. Few do it as beautifully as Ana Tijoux. █

LA SANTA CECILIA RELEASES “SOMEDAY NEW” By: Ellen Flores

After their win for Best Latin Rock, Urban, or Alternative Album at this year’s Grammy Awards for the album Treinta Días, La Santa Cecilia returns with “Someday New”. The album is a deep exploration into the sounds, emotions and influences that La Santa Cecilia so easily expresses for the Latino soul, succinctly compressed into seven new songs. UnlikeTreinta Días, Someday New, is an album that requires you to listen more than once to truly appreciate it. “Como Dios Manda” is a stand-out track, a beautiful piece of music both melodically and lyrically. La Marisoul’s soulful voice transmits the sentiment and emotion in a graceful way that makes it seem effortless. “Cumbia Morada” is a dance floor hit that will get you dancing in no time. Pepe’s mastery with the acordeón flourishes with every note. “La Morena”, is an empowering song for all Latinas to embrace and be proud of one’s skin. Two covers were included, “Strawberry Fields” from the Beatles and “Cuidado” from iconic crooner José José. Both songs get a fresh update yet still pay homage to their respective heart-wrenching original versions. While “El Hielo (ICE)” and “Monedita” were included as re-mastered versions, for me, they take away from the vibe that Someday New delivers. If you haven’t seen La Santa Cecilia live, I would recommend you do that first before checking out this album. Someday New is a solid effort by La Santa Cecilia with strong lyrics and melodies but slightly under par of their full brilliance. █

CALLE 13’S MULTI-VIRAL IS A MUSICAL ASSAULT THAT DELIVERS By: Ellen Flores

In 15 tracks Multi-Viral shows the musical range, personal growth and the desire that Calle 13 has to open the eyes of the masses to realize that there is strength in numbers and that the time to unite for change is now. Rene’s lyrics have shining moments in songs like “Con Los Pies en la Tierra”, “El Aguante” and the current single “Adentro”. At first listen, these tracks will have your heart racing, your fist bumping to the beat, and your eyes and ears wishing you could see Calle 13 performing them live in front of you at very high decibels. The witty René strikes back with the song “Los Idiotas” whose lyrics are already being quoted and tweeted by fans around the world. Like René, Eduardo Cabra shines brightly too. He combines acoustic, electronic, rock, hiphop and folkloric rhythms that extend to Celtic and Baltic music in a masterful way that make each track a musical exploration, a voyage into the sounds we love and discover with a Calle 13 album. One of the best musical moments in Multi-Viral has to be the combination of Beatles like piano and choral background voices in the song “Respira El Momento”, a haunting melody that crescendos to an explosion of emotions and images. With Multi-Viral, Calle 13 returns with an album that’s infested with fervor and power, and that’s a winning combination in my book. █

KUMBIA QUEERS – THREW NON-STOP 1000% TROPI-PUNK PARTY IN DC

By: Rosario Garcia

We were off to a good start at Judy’s Restaurant on March 7th when the bartender told us “we have 2 for 1 Tecates all night long”. Once we had our drinks, we visited Pila Zombie (Kumbia Queers guitarist and t-shirt designer extraordinaire) at the merch table where she answered all our questions about the Frida Kahlo muscle builder t-shirts, the Kumbia Zombie shirts, and Misfits designs that had been given the Kumbia Queer treatment. We started the dancing with the Maracuyeah DJ crew who opened up. The room, was at full capacity, and was buzzing with people ready to see the Kumbia Queers live. After a short intro from Kristy aka DJ rAt, Ali Gua Gua said “Wow DC.. we really love you, what a great crowd!” Throughout the night Ali Gua Gua and Juana Chang, sang their hearts away taking us from my favorite “Kumbia Dark” a Cure Cover, to Madonna “La Isla de Chicas”, to an amazing rendition of Black Sabbath’s Iron Man in their “Chica de Metal” cumbia cover. Their original hits sounded even better than the album especially, “Motochorra”, “Chica de Calendario”, “Celosa”, and “Mientes”. Their energy, paired with heavy guitar solos and keyboards were great, as well as, Ali Gua Gua’s güira playing which appeared to move everyone’s hips in unison. At one point Juana Chang threw some gigantic pink underwear she had purchased earlier in the wrong size into the crowd (the size charts in the US are a little bit different from those in Argentina). It’s amazing when a band is not only talented but sweet as pie as well! Come back soon Kumbia Queers, DC hearts you! █

“My boyfriend’s best friend is a girl. She calls him and texts him all day long, sends pictures (not suggestive but definitely attention seeking), and they have tons of inside jokes that only they understand. They are very affectionate with each other (have pet names) but not to the point of flirty. He doesn’t hide the calls or texts and often answers when I’m there. Despite the fact that I know he loves me, I can’t shake this feeling that I’m the third wheel. He even has a special ring tone for her (he doesn’t have one for me). I don’t want to have to make him choose between his best friend and me, but I also don’t like feeling like the jealous girlfriend who is always annoyed when she calls.”

Dear Third Wheel:

GILBERTO SANTA ROSA…UN AMOR PARA LA HISTORIA By; Gloria Turin

This was my 15th time seeing this man in concert but it felt like it was my first. As always, it is an honor to be part of the Salsa party with Gilberto Santa Rosa and his special way to get to your heart with his lyrics and swing! The weather was horrible on March 6ht but it did not stop fans from heading to the Fillmore in Silver Spring and getting all dressed up to attend the concert. The night started with DJ TC Soundz who warmed up the audience with old school romantic salsa. The venue was very spacious, giving enough space for those who wanted to tap their happy feet. Just as The Fillmore was getting packed, El Caballero de la Salsa made his appearance as he played a mix of his classics and new hits. The party lasted over two hours; which was full of singing, dancing and smiles. The crowd was very diverse and the show was perfect for all ages. Gilberto used a little humor between songs, he talked about having the perfect song for those who have suffered a break up and he dedicated the concert for all those single souls, he stated “Para los que tenian 2 tickets y se quedaron con uno, a ellos se los dedico!” That night Gilberto Santa Rosa did more than just make us dance, he also connected many hearts and souls. The show gave me butterflies and goose bumps just as my first concert when I was 10 years old. I have to say that the concert was amazing from beginning to end! █

Third Wheel in VA

I completely understand why you are annoyed! When we are in an exclusive relationship with someone, we need to feel certain that we are each other’s priority. Of course it’s ok for your boyfriend to have close friends, but if you are constantly feeling like the third wheel in your own relationship, then it’s definitely time to have a serious conversation with him! Sometimes even though we intellectually “know” we are loved, we don’t necessarily feel loved when certain actions from our partners leave us feeling unimportant, or taken for granted. If you are in a committed relationship and love each other, then it’s absolutely reasonable for you to expect to share a deep emotional connection with your boyfriend. Without that it’s hard to build a meaningful bond as a couple. In order to feel secure in a relationship, we need to feel emotionally connected to our loved one, and when we feel a threat to that connection (his bestie!) then it creates insecurity and it leads to hurt feelings. It’s important to be honest about how you feel, and if he cares about you, he’ll want to hear about your feelings. You don’t have to approach the conversation as the “jealous” girlfriend, or make accusations. The important thing is to be open and share your vulnerable feelings about this, letting him know how hurt you feel by all these actions that leave you feeling like an outsider, and that as his girlfriend you need to feel like you are his #1. It’s not a matter of choosing between you or her, the point is that to be able to build trust in this relationship you need to feel safe and loved, and it’s hard to do that when you are walking around feeling hurt and ignored all the time. Hopefully he’ll be able to respond and give you the reassurance that you need. But if he ignores your hurt feelings, then that’s important information for you to have as you make decisions about what you want and deserve in a relationship. █
