They all gravitate around the subject and verb of love. A universal feeling that is as primal as it gets. Now, telenovelas, ballads and families all have different ways of expressing and talking about love, that’s a fact, but what unites them is the continual pursuit that we all have in this area of life. When it comes to love the questions are endless and more so the scenarios we all face. We all look for advice because it’s all about perspective and there is one duo that has been giving us advice and tools to navigate through this crazy thing called love for over 30 years. Argentinian brother and sister duo Pimpinela seem to have all the answers to matters of the heart and on Friday, August 22, Washingtonians will have a chance to attend a musical session of life lessons, love advice and amazing music with Pimpinela at the Warner Theater. Lucía and Joaquín Roberto Galán Cuervo are the brother and sister duo we know today as Pimpinela. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and being of Spanish descent, singing and dancing were the perfect outlet to exteriorize their emotions and thoughts. These siblings began singing for family members and friends at gatherings, holidays and reunions not knowing that these moments would be the starting points for the three decade career they have today. Summertime for the siblings meant spending 6 months in Spain visiting relatives and friends well throughout their teen years, so much so that they acquired double nationality: Argentinian and Spanish. These vacations heavily influenced the sound and style that we know as Pimpinela. Lucía and Joaquín’s
parents Joaquín and María Engracia were the first to advise the siblings to the idea of entering the music industry as a duo. It pays off to listen to your parent’s advice! From their genesis as a duo in 1981 they sought out to compose and interpret different style music by fusing theatrical elements into their songs and a musical style significantly direct and simple that connects with the audience. Pimpinela launched their careers by adding a distinctive twist to their musical performances. After a few years, their tune “Olvídame Y Pega La Vuelta” became a hit, topping charts at the number one spot. As their success escalated, the duet expanded to new territories, earning recognition for their unique performances along the way. Throughout their 30 years in the music industry, Pimpinela has released 25 albums and sold over 25 million records worldwide. Anthems like “A Esa”, “Ese Estúpido Que Llama”, “Ahora Me Toca a Mi” and “Dímelo Delante de Ella” Pimpinela preached to generations of fans on how to deal with situations that afflict the heart and defy logic. This month, Pimpinela will visit the Warner Theater in Washington DC in support of their most recent album “Estamos Todos Locos” which includes the current hits “Yo Quiero Un Hombre de Verdad” and “¿Por Qué?” as a bonus. Pimpinela is keeping the tour dubbed “Las Canciones de Tu Vida” truly in the family by featuring the participation of Roció Hazan Galán and Francisco Galán, son and daughter of Lucía and Joaquín, respectively. Pimpinela is a duo that has left an indelible mark in the collective memory of Latin American pop culture and that through these thirty years of stories, hits and theatrics has captured the hearts of fans across the globe. Their lyrics are more than words strung together with phonetic beauty, they serve as a tangible audial representation of the desires and aspirations that our hearts feel but at times cannot muster the strength to express. On Friday, August 22 let your heart sing to the stories and melodies that only a duo like Pimpinela can do at the Warner Theatre! For more information visit, www.kestadc.com! █

ROCK with a lone horn, while Bunbury sings, “y al final te atare con todas mis fuerzas/mis brazos seran cuerdas al bailar este vals/y al final quiero verte de nuevo contenta/ sigue dando vueltas si aguantas de pie.” “Sacame de Aquí” is an ultimate frustration anthem, expressing desires to escape and re-write the rules we all play by, amidst musing if God is deaf.

panish rocker Enrique Bunbury is back at it again, touring for his latest album Palosanto. Bunbury’s musical career began in 1986 with the legendary band Heroes Del Silencio (HDS). During his years with the band, Bunbury grew as a singer and musician, and defined himself as an exceptional lyricist and a creative and unique figure in the Spanish rock scene. The reputation Bunbury built with HDS has marked the success of his solo career; something that many artists would lack in the wake of being part of such a successful band. However, after 17 years as a solo artist, Bunbury has become one of the most influential figures in Spanish rock and redefined himself from the legacy of Heroes Del Silencio. Bunbury is constantly evolving as an artist, which is evident from his 8 studio albums, each with a unique sound and influences. The common thread is Bunbury’s distinctive voice and masterful, poetic lyrics. When I first got into Spanish rock, I heard HDS classics like “Iberia Sumergida” and “Apuesta por El Rock n Roll” and was drawn to Bunbury’s voice. He sings
with raw power and drama and was a breath of fresh air from other bands I was listening to at the time. When I delved into his solo work, I enjoyed it but something was missing for me. Normally I think music can transcend language barriers, but as I became more proficient in Spanish and went back to Bunbury’s songs, it felt as if I was hearing them for the first time. Bunbury’s songs are pieces of poetry, letting us experience love, sorrow, deep introspection and more; Bunbury uses language as a painter does with a brush, and is only elevated by his musical delivery. “El Rescate” is deeply metaphorical and amorous, and touches on themes of restlessness as a defense mechanism to the one person who can “rescue” him. The sorrowful “Frente a Frente” is arguably one of his most popular songs- this song still gives me chills! With lyrics like, “Queda sólo el silencio/Que hace estallar la noche fría y larga/La noche que no acaba… sólo eso queda,” the sentiment in the song is more foreboding in the sense that once love has disappeared, there is literally nothing left, not even words. “Y Al Final” is one of Bunbury’s most interesting tracks set to a waltz beat
Bunbury’s latest album, Palosanto is on par with his older songs and albums in terms of lyrics and musical exploration, but shows a side of Bunbury not seen since the release of “Avalancha” with HDS, a politically charged album rife with social messages. Though Bunbury has maintained that Palosanto is open to interpretation and does not advocate a singular position; Parts I and II of the album are united by a message of the need for change and revolution; societal and personal. Part I of Palosanto is heavier with more digital influences while Part II is distinctively more organic and spiritual. In an interview about the making of Palosanto, Bunbury commented that he was inspired by global movements and that it seemed many people were thinking the same thing at the same time. He also cites the birth of his daughter as an inspiration to look inward for solutions to create meaningful change saying that, “when you have kids, you start to think that you will leave them something that is completely wrong, so maybe I have some obligations to make change on a large scale, starting with yourself.” Don’t miss out on seeing Bunbury on his Palosanto tour, stopping at the Fillmore in Silver Spring on September 20th. I can say with authority from personal experience that Bunbury puts on hell of a concert (complete with his crazy suits), and I’m certain this tour will be no exception. METAL
By: Ellen Flores Metal, is an English language dominated genre. Interestingly enough some Metal artists perform in English and are not native speakers nor fluent in the language at all. Taking this fact to the next level is one of metal’s most respected Latin bands, Puya. A Puerto Rican power group that has managed to integrate horns, salsa inspired bass lines, Latin percussion and Spanish lyrics with the full attitude and assault that traditional metal fans crave. This accomplishment is one of the many reasons why Puya is the powerhouse it is and that’s exactly why you need to be at the Howard Theatre on Tuesday, September 16 to watch them perform live.
Ortiz (guitarist) and salsa funkmaster Harold Hopkins (bassist) started an instrumental power trio called Whisker Biscuit by recruiting Eduardo Paniagua (drummer) after he finished his studies in the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Whisker Biscuit had some success but they desired to take it to the next level, that’s when vocalist Sergio Curbelo came into the picture. Now baptized as Puya and relocating to Miami, they met a producer who took a genuine interest in them and recorded their first demo. This album changed everything, opening all the doors for Puya, and growing their fan base in the Miami and U.S. metal scene.
Puya, by definition meaning a sharp pointed object, is the perfect descriptor of their sound; a sharp musical assault that ranges from Puerto Rican history with stories inspired by the native Taino tribe to global stories of struggle, loss, redemption and unity. Their sound is a piercing contrast of musical fusion that blends heavy rock, funk, jazz and Latin groove.
One of Puya’s defining moments was their performance at the prestigious Rock Al Parque in Colombia before a crowd of 60,000 people, a giant feat for the only indie band on the lineup. One year later Puya united with mastermind producer Gustavo Santaolalla (Café Tacvba, Juanes, Molotov, Fobia etc.) to create the musical gem known to metal fans as “Fundamental” the band’s second studio release which launched them into the view of millions of
From the beginning, high school friends and metal heads guitar virtuoso Ramon
metal fans across the world. The success of songs like “Oasis” “Fundamental” and “Sal Pa’ Fuera” took Puya to tour relentlessly over the span of 4 years in the U.S., Canada, South and Central America on mayor tours such as: the Ozzfest 99, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Iron Maiden, Sepultura, Slipknot, System of a Down, Hatebreed, Incubus, Pantera just to name a few. Their follow up album Union was a solid and well received album by fans and critics alike which led them to tour until fall 2001 at which point Puya took a much deserved rest. It wasn’t until February 2014 that the band took to the stage once again headlining “Bahia Urbana Amphitheater” in San Juan, PR as the first Latin Metal group to perform at the new state of the art venue in the island. The concert was recorded to be released later this year as their next album which promises to be their best live recording to date. What Puya has done for over two decades is bring a dose of adrenaline with a one-two punch combination of Latin horns, percussion and Puerto Rican folklore inspired riffs fused attitude. Puya’s
band members are devoted and virtuous musicians that hone and honor their craft with every recording, performance and composition they release to their fans. At a Puya show they give it their all. Get ready to be part of the mosh pit, get lost in the shredding riffs, the heart pounding bass and percussion that fuses into your soul and lifts you in a metal state of musical euphoria. Rocker, Latino, Metalhead or whatever label you choose, be sure of this: The Howard Theatre will never be the same after Puya arrives full force for a night of metal the DC scene will always remember. We hope to see you there on September 16th with your metal horns and fists high up in the air and chanting along because “¡Es aquí donde el sonido del futuro para una nueva fase!” Tickets are available via www.tickeri.com.

Being so young and fresh faced in the adult male dominated salsa genre of the late 80s and early 90s, Jerry coined the stage persona of “El Bebé de La Salsa”.
Born in the city of Santuce, Puerto Rico, Jerry discovered music at a very young age. His father Edwin Rivera was a Trio singer and his mother Sandy, was a singersongwriter whose passion left a mark on Jerry as a child and eventually as a teenager when he became a signed artist at the young age of 15 after he was accompanying his parents at a show and they encouraged him to sing a couple of songs on stage. What Jerry didn’t know was that in the crowd Tommy Olivencia, a respected and admired salsa band leader was enraptured by Jerry’s raw talent and encouraged him after the
His album “Abriendo Puertas” featured standout tracks like “Esa Niña”, “Dime” and “Como un Milagro” making the album reach the number one spot on Billboard charts across Puerto Rico, United States and Latin America. His follow up effort “Cuenta Conmigo” granted him three platinum albums and two nominations to the Latin equivalent of People’s Choice Awards the Premios Lo Nuestro for the category of “Singer of the Year” and “Album of the Year”. Jerry Rivera was on the rise in the Latin Tropical genre and in 1993 he rose to the very top with the salsa staple album “Cara de Niño”, one of the best albums of his career as a salsa artist. Jerry Rivera who is known for his signature style of “Salsa Romántica” pushed himself to record an album that is deemed by any salsa connoisseur as one of THE classic Salsa albums produced in the 90s.
“Cara de Niño is salsa upbeat, rhythmic, danceable and truly representative of Jerry Rivera.” Jerry continued his chart topping success through the 90s and into the millennium where he branched out and recorded pop, ballads and boleros that were very successful and found in the 1999 album “De Otra Manera” which included the song “Ese”, a song he performed in concert in Puerto Rico alongside his dad onstage. Fast forward to 2014 and now we celebrate twenty five years of musical masterpieces and heart filled stories which
have taken him on a global spanning tour that even had a stop in Japan! Don’t worry you don’t need to buy a plane ticket just yet because Washington DC will get a visit from la Cara de Niño of Salsa on Saturday, August 16 at the Washington Hilton Hotel for the DC Bachata Congress where he will be performing with Toby Love. Whether you like Jerry’s salsa anthems or ballads, Saturday is the spot to be to see a Salsa giant on stage and doing what he does best, bringing his “A” game and unmistakable voice directly to your heart and your feet! █

COMEDY

quickly helped her to begin to headline her own shows.
“ The video features Anjelah describing visiting a Nail Salon called “Beautiful Nail” and proceeds to tell a hilarious story (in a very spot-on Vietnamese accent) of getting your nails done and being judged for not having a boyfriend, not wanting long nails, and being subject to upselling. This breakout performance led to many stand up and performance opportunities. Although Anjelah is a natural for comedy, this was not the first career choice for Johnson, she first tried her hand at professional cheerleading. As an Oakland Raiderette, she earned the title of Rookie of the Year and even performed in Super Bowl XXXVII. After that year, she decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of acting. A friend suggested that she join a joke writing class and she took some improv classes that
Anjelah quickly caught the attention of the producers and was asked to join the cast of “MADtv” as a series regular. Due to the writers’ strike, she was often given only a few lines in the scripts. But that didn’t stop the character Bon Qui Qui, which she wrote herself, to turn into another internet sensation. A “ghetto fabulous” fast food employee later turned singer, who treats customers rudely, was received well and gained a similarly large YouTube following. After recording and releasing three songs and two music videos for Bon Qui Qui, Johnson signed a record deal with Atlantic Records to release a full album. The songs and videos, like “I’m A Cut You” are currently available on iTunes and YouTube. Anjelah was nominated for an ALMA Award for Outstanding Female Performance in a Comedy Television Series for her work on MADtv. The Latina of Mexican and Native American descent, was given her
own one-hour Comedy Central and Warner Brothers Records special, “Anjelah Johnson: That’s How We Do It”, in 2009. She has also appeared in films like Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, Enough Said and Our Family Wedding, alongside Carlos Mencia, Regina King, and Oscar Winner Forest Whitaker. Johnson provided her voice for the live-action adaptation of Marmaduke, and most recently the film “Mom’s Night Out” that not only features Anjelah but also her husband, the Puerto Rican musician, Manwell Reyes of the band Group 1 Crew. Johnson has also guest starred on shows such as The Shield, Ugly Betty, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and the late night talk show Lopez Tonight, hosted by George Lopez. In 2013, her role as her MADtv character Bon Qui Qui was brought back for a genius skit released for the T by Alexander Wang spring campaign. Her second one-hour special, “The Homecoming Show” aired on NUVOtv in July of 2013 and is currently available on DVD.
Her comedic style is mostly based on the conventional “observational comedy” which means, humor based on the premise of “it’s funny because it’s true”, that’s exactly the main reason why her material is so popular, and so good, because she’s relatable. Johnson shares details of her everyday life in ways we cannot help but at least chuckle, and let’s be honest, who doesn’t know at least one person that reminds us of Bon Qui Qui? Anjelah Johnson-Reyes is currently touring with her new show and will be making a stop in the Nation’s Capital on Saturday September 27th 2014 at the legendary Warner Theater at 8:00 PM. Make sure to check Anjelah’s website (http:// anjelah.com/) and Kesta http://www. kestadc.com/ for more information. █

or as long as I can remember I have always been a huge Enrique fan. With his gorgeous looks, penetrating gaze, captivating voice, and sexy Spanish accent, it’s hard not to be a fan. I remember going to my first Enrique concert back when I was in high school. I was so excited, and so were all the other girls in the crowd. I couldn’t agree with Will Smith more when he said, “I went to one of Enrique’s concerts once, and you’ve just never heard this type of sustained screaming. It was almost like people were coming there specifically to scream, and the girls were taking turns.” I still remember how jealous everyone was when Enrique pulled one of his fans up on stage and kissed her. It made such an impact, it seemed that people would be talking about it forever. >>>
WWW.KESTADC.COM
>>> I grew up listening to Enrique’s songs like “Hero” and “Escape”, and falling in love listening to tracks like “Sirena”, “Sólo en Ti”, “Experiencia Religiosa” and “Cuando Me Enamoró.” I even had his song “Dimelo” on my Myspace page back when Myspace was cool. Although I love all of Enrique’s songs, I’d have to say I have always been partial to his Romantic Spanish language ballads. Several years have passed since I attended my first Enrique concert, but I’m still a loyal Enrique fan, and even more so than before. One of the things I admire most about him as an artist is his unwavering dedication. After all, his mantra is “never give up”. While other artists have fallen off the radar over the years, or have become one, or even “two-hit wonders”, Enrique has remained in the spotlight, constantly reinventing himself and adjusting his style to give his fans exactly what they want. In more recent years, Enrique has traded in his romantic ballads for more edgy and high tempo dance songs. He has also collaborated with a number of well-known artists from different genres. Enrique’s work ethic has earned him a well-deserved, tremendous amount of success. He has sold more than 100 million albums and is a multiplatinum artist in almost every country in the world. He is the current male record holder for having the most #1 dance songs on the charts, beating out Michael Jackson and Prince.
dollar deals to appear as a judge on American Idol, The X Factor and the original cast of NBC’s The Voice. The extra responsibilities would have taken his focus off recording the album, and interfered with his 2012 touring schedule. “I cared more about going into the studio and writing songs,” he commented, “That’s what makes me happier.” Sex and Love is a bilingual album and features a number of guest vocals including Romeo Santos, Yandel, Pitbull, Flo Rida, Marco Antonio Solís, Jennifer Lopez, Minogue, Gente de Zona, and India Martinez. When asked what his favorite track on the album was, Enrique confessed that it was too hard to choose a favorite, and that his opinion may change from one week to the next. If he had to choose, however, he said it would have to be between “Bailando”, “Let me be your lover”, and “El Perdedor”.
Now, in addition to jamming to his music, now you can even smell like Enrique. Enrique recently launched a new fragrance, Adrenaline. The personality of the fragrance is Inspired by his appetite for experience, Adrenaline is “a provocative contrast between a top full of freshness and a heart that beats in spicy, vibrant woods and sensual, creamy leather, to embody a true modern masculinity.” The top notes include a mix of mandarine, zesty cedrat, and a hint of violet. The heart consists of black pepper and saffron, with a floral-fruity aroma of pomarose. The base features notes of cedar, roasted tonka bean, and leather. The line includes a variety of products including cologne, after-shave lotion, and hair & body wash.
Enrique has stated in various interviews that one of his favorite places to be is on stage, and it comes as no surprise that when Enrique takes the stage he gives fans a stellar performance. Complete with numerous special effects, jaw dropping choreography, and infectious energy. Enrique’s Sex and Love tour will be making a stop in the DMV area. So splash on some Adrenaline, and prepare for own adrenaline to start pumping.
Enrique is currently on tour promoting his latest album, Sex and Love, which was released in March of 2014. Enrique describes the album as fun and obviously, sexual. He decided to call the album Sex and Love, because he said that sex and love are two things that anyone can relate to. “No matter what religion, color, or nationality you are, we can all relate to sex and love”, he said in a recent interview. “When people listen to the album, “I hope they can forget whatever’s going on and just enjoy it.” While working on the album, Enrique turned down various multimillion-

“ “
The story goes as follows: in the Caribbean, there exists a magical island ruled by the wizardly queen Prospera ( Julie McInnes). One night, Prospera conjures up a storm that shipwrecks a group of sailors onto the island. As is typical of Cirque Du Soleil shows, the sailors turn out to be attractive, muscular men and it isn’t long before the queen’s daughter, Miranda
(Ikhertsetseg Bayarsaikhan), falls for the handsome Romeo. A villain is necessary in every fairy tale and in this case the job falls on half-man, half-lizard, Cali ( Viktor Kee), who will do anything to prevent the young lovers from reaching their happily ever after. At Cirque Du Soleil however, the plot is the last thing audiences worry about. The charm of the show comes from the mind-boggling acrobatics and feats of muscle and elegance from these gorgeous people who defy our understanding of what is possible. Miranda is a lithe contortionist, at one point she submerges herself in a glass of water as seamlessly as a dolphin and performs an underwater ballet. Romeo hold his own in this land of acrobatic women, sliding in at breakneck speed upside-down on a long pole, stopping just inches before hitting the floor while the audience catches their hearts in their throats. Besides the main performers there are jugglers, uneven bars, the height defying aerial straps, and of course the human pretzels that makeup the talented cast. No Cirque Du Soleil show would be complete without its fantasy set, this
time designed by Award winning Scenic Designer Scott Pask, who has designed a diverse range of productions, both on Broadway and in London. For “AmaLuna” he sets up a verdant set with giant bamboolike stalks, taking his inspiration from forests and plant life, the set manages to be both immersive and open, allowing space for the ceremonies and acrobatics of the show. Music is also a vital element for Cirque, and “AmaLuna” features an all-women band. The score is a little more rock and roll than typical cirque shows, a mix of hard rock and their signature new age sound. Cellos are one of the score’s mainstay sounds with a cellist even flying over the audience at one point playing her electrified cello. The show is directed by Broadway Tony Award winning director Diane Paulus. Paulus, a native New Yorker, has been a busy theater director on the upper West
Side for years. She grew up in an acting family and even danced on tiptoe with the New York City Ballet as a girl. These experiences eventually flew her to Montreal where she was invited by Cirque founder Guy Laliberte who had seen and loved her work on Broadway productions like “Hair,” and “Pippin.” To create “AmaLuna,” Paulus commuted between Manhattan and Canada for two years beginning in 2010. “AmaLuna” marks Paulus’s debut with the company and what we can only hope is one of many collaborations to come. Don’t miss this enchanting show that will certainly delight family members of all ages, from your Abuelita to the baby. Cirque Du Soleil’s “AmaLuna” show will be held from July 31st to September 21st, 2014 at the National Harbor. latter. Garnished with fresh mint leaves and ginger, the Mango Cilantro Mojito was cool and refreshing with muddled lime, sugar, white rum, and soda. As I enjoyed my Mango Cilantro Mojito, I also snacked on some Guacamole Veracruz. This smooth and creamy guac is made fresh with each order, and executive Chef Joseph Tis adds his own twist by adding unique ingredients like tomatillo. The guac goes great with the chip blend that accompanies it, which includes long crispy plantains.
It has a tasteful décor complete with large dining room, tall floor to ceiling windows, outdoor patio seating, and hardwood floors. Its friendly and attentive staff make your dining experience even more enjoyable. One of the things Paladar is known for are its mojitos. Two of the most popular choices are the Pomegranate Mojito and the Mango Cilantro Mojito. I opted for the
The next item I tried was the Tilapia & Avocado Ceviche. Marinated in lime juice, the thinly sliced tilapia was blended with tomatillos, cilantro, red onion, grape tomatoes, Hungarian peppers, and avocado. The ceviche was topped with crushed peanuts and plantains, giving it a unique blend of crunch and tenderness. The Chilled Gazpacho was a pleasant surprise. A cool, thick blend of tomatoes, red peppers, cucumbers, and onions, and topped with jicama, crunchy cucumbers
and Cuban croutons, this gazpacho was both delicious and refreshing. Next on the menu was the Ropa Vieja, a Cuban staple, and one of Paladar’s most popular dishes (I can see why!). Made with mouth watering, shredded brisket, and stewed with tomatoes and other flavorful spices, the Ropa Vieja is served on top of a sweet, plump plantain and topped with aji armarilla. The combination of the plantain with the succulent meat was the ideal combination for the perfect texture and flavor. Chef Gregory told me that there was an ongoing competition in the kitchen as to who could make the best Ropa Vieja. Once I learned that Paladar also served Brazilian Feijoada, I could not leave without trying it. Made with slow roasted pork, spicy chorizo, and black beans, it was simply amazing, and was comparable if not better than the feijoadas I have tried in Brazil. What made this feijoada so unique was it was both spicy and flavorful, and was not drowned out by the flavor of black beans.
Just when I thought I could not eat anymore, as I always do, I made room for dessert. The Mango Tres Leches Cake was the perfect closing dish to an already exquisite meal. This treat consisted of a homemade thick, sponge cake, soaked in milk and filled with sweet mango sauce. The cake was topped with whipped cream and mint leaves. I had to stop myself before I ate entire thing. I was thoroughly impressed with my dining experience at Paladar Latin Kitchen & Rum bar. I liked their offering of a variety of both healthy and delicious menu items, made with fresh, high quality ingredients. I also appreciated the variety of Latin foods from different cultures. Where else can you get Peruvian ceviche, Argentine asado, Brazilian Feijoada, and Cuban Ropa Vieja all under one roof? But as Levar Burton of Reading Rainbow once said, “You don’t have to take my word for it”. Go ahead and try Paladar: Latin Kitchen and Rum Bar for yourself. ists. “I prepared very hard to make it, I gave it my all,” Moisés remembers. The three finalists were quizzed on their World Cup knowledge, Moisés was like a human sports almanac, and he had all the answers. His knowledge earned him the spot. For the duration of the World Cup, Moisés lived and breathed the sport; he would watch the games at local hangouts and conduct interviews with the fans. His hard work paid off and his reporting earned him a visit to the popular TV show, “Acción Deportiva”. Moisés kept his eye on the prize and gathered experience working as a production assistant for Fox Sports, was a columnist for Fox Deportes, was a contributing writer at Latino Sports 360 magazine, and served as a radio host with Skid Row Studios. He also found time to volunteer working with adults with developmental disabilities in California, and also maintained his own blog and wrote content for a social media fitness page. Talk about busy!
KH: Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Do you think it’s going to happen? Moisés: It may seem like it’s not, but when you really look at it, I do think it’s going to happen. It will happen after Pacquiao leaves Bob (Arum). He has one year left in his contract with his promoter, after that, I think they will make it happen before they retire. KH: Who is your pick for the World Cup? Moisés: I always pick Argentina, but they always lose! I’ve supported them since I was 5. I remember watching Maradona on TV in the 90 World Cup, watching the games, but they lost to Germany. With Messi around, their time is now.
KH: What projects would you like to take on in the future? Moisés: I want to keep becoming a better anchor. I want to work in both, Spanish and English. I want to go to a World Cup and cover the event.
KH: I guess we know the answer to this question then, Messi or Ronaldo? Moisés: They are both great, not just because of the goals, but because of the consistency in their play. The bad thing for Ronaldo is playing in the same era as Messi. Same as Platini in the 80’s. He was one of the best, but Maradona was around. KH: Any advice for someone looking to get into sports broadcasting or journalism? Moisés: It’s not easy. There are 40 to 50 guys waiting for one opening. I waited for years, did the magazine work...and I told myself “you can’t quit”. I had to move across the country to make this happen. My accomplishments wouldn’t be possible without the love and support of two important women, my grandmother and my mother.
KH: What’s your favorite sport to cover? Moisés: Soccer, but I like to keep it balanced.
KH: How do you like living in the D.C. area? Moisés: The people are nice; they greet
When asked what his favorite part about being a Sports Anchor is, Moises shared, “I get to do, what many people wish they could do. Be on the field. As close as possible to the action.”
me and tell me they like my segment. That makes all the preparation worthwhile. It’s a cool city...except the winter. After years of hard work, preparation, and with a resolve not to quit, this California native is quickly making a name for himself in our community and has turned his passion into a successful career. Not an easy feat, now if only he could just get used to the cold winters... Don’t forget to catch the latest in sports with Moisés Linares on Telenoticias Washington D.C, Monday through Friday at 6 and 11pm. By: Rosario Garcia earrings and other items for myself. It started growing and growing and I had that need to little by little dedicate more time to it, make it more personal, fuse various methods and start experimenting until finally I was happy with the final product,” shared Liz.
Hailing from Tijuana, Mexico, Liz Navarro is not foreign to arts and crafts. She started dabbling in designing hair accessories like bows and clips some 22 years ago in Tijuana. “I love jewelry, and I love art so now I’ve combined my two loves and I’ve started to make jewelry that’s more artistic. I started up at first by making
For Liz, starting La Catrina Art Shop is a dream come true. She comes home to her studio to build beautiful pieces of jewelry for both men and women. Even better than creating the pieces themselves, is finding the materials to create them with. I once witnessed Liz receive a milk jug full of bottle caps from a friend who was visiting her. She opened them excitedly and looked through the various brands. “Oooh this is an unusual design I’m going to make something special out of this,” she remarked while examining one of the bottle caps. “Like they say, someone’s trash is someone else’s treasure. I turn these tiny treasures into something personal and artistic.” Making Eco-friendly jewelry reduces waste and also serves a cultural purpose. Repurposing something that someone else
would consider trash and turning it into something beautiful is comforting to both the maker and the wearer. I myself own a few pairs of La Catrina Art Shop’s earrings and always feel like I rescued something from an ill fate. If you wear something from La Catrina Art Shop be prepared to receive constant compliments about them. In addition to each piece being one-of-akind (each piece has some varying bead or color that distinguishes it from the rest), you’ll be wearing something created with love and care just for you. The Frida Kahlo inspired pieces are some of my favorites. Frida is regal in red embedded into a bottle cap and adorned with flower beads. I also like some of the band earrings made out of Iron Maiden guitar picks, or Nirvana logo bottle caps. Since Liz is inspired by Day of the Dead motifs, some of the treasures feature various skulls, and spiderweb designs. More recently, La Catrina Art Shop expanded to creating custom decorative sugar skulls, and hand-painted photo frames, jewelry boxes, plant pots, ceramic drink coasters, and even shot glasses.
Liz comes from an artistic family as her daughter is local Graffiti/Tattoo artist NebsiOne. They sometimes organize coordinated events together which integrate music, art expos, live body or graffiti painting, and Liz’s Catrina shop under the moniker La Catrina Art Collective. One such event last year took place during Day of the Dead on November 2nd and featured Spanish metal band Calibre Zero. Something unique about La Catrina Art Shop is they can customize almost anything. “I love custom pieces because then I’m making something based on a specific person’s order and it becomes a more personal connection between me and them. It’s something special,” shares Liz. To find out more about Liz Navarro and her La Catrina Art Shop visit her page Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/ lacatrinaartshop. Born out of the diversity in Columbia Heights/Mt. Pleasant and the members’ own backgrounds; bilingualism, multiculturalism and a wide array of musical backgrounds defines Elena & Los Fulanos and their music. This band is a growing presence in the indie and international music scenes and well represents the intersection of culture, language and the duality of identities experienced by many in the DMV and an increasingly globalized world. So what do Elena & Los Fulanos sound like? Think twangy songs of heartbreak a la classic Americana folk, as well as, violininfused Latin rock; and much more in between! Singer/songwriter Elena Lacayo, born in Nicaragua, relocated to the US to attend university. Upon graduation she began working with a prominent immigration non-profit in DC. Music always had a presence in her life and after moving to DC, Lacayo began writing more of her own songs and performing around town at various open mics and gigs. Through her work at the non-profit and other connections through friends and the music scene, Lacayo formed a band with her “fulanos” in 2011. Self-described

by Lacayo as a hodgepodge of members, her bandmates have musical backgrounds ranging from mariachi to punk rock and careers in civil rights to engineering. With a band and repertoire of original songs, Elena & Los Fulanos had their first show as a band at the Velvet Lounge and began playing frequently throughout the DC area. Though Lacayo has a definite passion for working for immigrant justice, she chose to transition to pursuing music full time in 2012. Speaking to her career change, Lacayo remarked, “I decided to go for it since I’m kind of ‘free’ right now I wanted to have space and time to write music; and especially space and time to get into the mindset to write.” As someone who often feels trapped between career expectations/pressures and following my own dreams, I found this piece of Lacayo’s story very inspiringshe’s open and receptive to where the universe wants to take her and this bravery and openness certainly reflects in her songwriting. In addition to their strong positive reception in the DC area, Lacayo has also retained a fan base in her hometown of Managua, Nicaragua and was featured on Nicaraguan National Television. Lacayo, who identifies as both Nica and American, has shown that someone growing up between two identities not only has a strong and unique sense of self,
but can engage people on both sides of the “border” so to speak with awesome music and an awesome message. “We want our music to explore and engage with the sometimes beautiful and sometimes messy meeting and mashup of cultures that is happening in our communities, in our families, and within ourselves,” said Lacayo. Elena & Los Fulanos released their first full length studio album on July 29th with a show at Tropicalia. Miel Venenosa shows tremendous growth from the band and it showcases a fuller sound as the band experimented with layering and new instrumentation to give old songs a new feel and depth. The band’s range of musical interests is more explored in Miel Venenosa, for example “All We Have Left” has a reggae feel while “Amor Migrante” showcases the beauty and drama of classic Latin guitar. This album is all about cultural and personal exploration and not one to be missed by indie and international music lovers. Be sure to check out www. elenalosfulanos.com for more information on the band, upcoming shows and to check out their new album Miel Venenosa. Also check out www.kestadc.com/blog for an interview with Elena Lacayo to learn more about this awesome band from our hood! █

young age. “I know my parents didn’t mean me any harm by taking my sister’s Barbie’s away and giving me a toy car instead. Kids don’t understand religion, and social constructs but they know what they like. I just want people to be tolerant of that,” Sebastian states. I recently witnessed (me llamo) Sebastian’s debut performance in New York City as part of the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) indie showcase. He was introduced and quieted an entire room by singing a capella to a bar full of industry folks looking to discover the newest star. He was soon featured in the New York Times, and NPR’s Alt Latino as one of the artists to watch in 2014.
(me llamo) Sebastian’s songs teeter from pop to cabaret to romantic ballads while singing about topics like homophobia, love, vegetarianism, Disney, and beauty. “I write about things that happen to me, my friends, and my family. I came from a background where everything was very rehearsed and cheesy and edited for TV. When I finally came out of the closet at 18, I started to sing and write about the things that actually happened to me.”
There’s a humbleness and sweetness to Sebastian that draws you in and makes you want to give him a hug while also being in awe of his musical genius. When I asked Sebastian why some of his songs are self-deprecating (See “El Grupo de los Feos”) he stated matter-of-factly, “I know this business is very competitive and there are so many amazing artists and musicians out there, I would consider myself lucky if I am able to reach any kind of success doing what I love. When I was little I would compete for TV shows in Chile and I went through a lot of rejection, a lot of bullying, comments about my music, appearance, weight, everything. I constantly felt judged so that still comes out in my music sometimes,” he added.
El Hambre (2013) is an intelligent album that shows maturity and a vocal and musical greatness that’s hard to describe. Aside from “Ninos Rosados”, the album contains “Varita Magica” a whimsical song about wishes coming true and happy endings. Influenced by a wide-range of music from Laura Pausini, to Disney soundtracks, to cabaret singers, and Broadway musicals, Sebastian constantly reinvents himself performing with orchestras, violins, cellos, and even choirs.
“Ninos Rosados” explores the confines of femininity and masculinity that are assigned to children at a very

To end our interview, Sebastian shared how his mother recently gifted him a new phone. “It was pink! ‘I know it’s your favorite color,’ she said. We both laughed because now they understand me,” he beamed.

Straight out of the San Francisco Bay Area, Bang Data is here to take us along for the ride. With their signature mix of slick and melodic guitar, gritty synth & bass, over banging electro-acoustic rhythms, Bang Data is the perfect sound to blast in your playlist this summer. Ranging from heavy grooves, lyrical hip hop wit, Samba, Ska, Cumbia and hints of Afro-Electro to Bossanova, “La Sopa” has it all, perfectly seasoned to become your summer find. The fellas from Bang Data Deuce Eclipse - Lead Vocals, Juan Manuel Caipo - Drums/Producer, Marco Guzman - Bass and Michael Cavaseno – Guitar are a welcome addition to our Kesta Happening music finds and one that you should add to your playlist too! I first learned of this group at this year’s Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) and instantly got hooked. Their album “La Sopa” has 14 tracks that very much like a soup (La Sopa) contain ingredients that fuse the multicultural flavor and sound that current Latin Alternative music has. Did we mention that the self titled track “Bang Data” was featured in the juggernaut show Breaking Bad? I mean, come on, if Walter White can rock some Bang Data you should too. On this album, also make a point to check out the tracks “Veneno”, “El Pacino” and “Don’t Know” which in my humble opinion are the standout songs in this album and best showcase the group’s talent and musical identity. Big Pollo Funk is a Peruvian band that envelopes sweet and melodic female vocals in the care of Alejaru Rodriguez, with hip-hop influences brought by Tato Elera. The band introduces 13 tracks that fuse funk, jazz, and rock seamlessly in their latest album, Habla. The title track is Big Pollo’s manifesto, a fast paced funky jazzy tune that demands your attention. “Habla no te resignes al silencio. Dime algo que importe!” Tato recites. The tune requests that we rid ourselves of trivial conversations and talk about issues with substance. Aside from the funk inspired trumpets and keyboards, the lead guitar solos bring a genuine rock and roll feeling to the track. “Tiempo” is a demure song where Alejaru’s sweet voice really shines, transposed with a fluid guitar and a rhythmic hip-hop vocals by Tato. It’s a song that sings about both promise for the future and promises that have been broken. It shows a maturity in both song-writing and melody which take Habla to the next level. “Urbe Extravagente” is a varied track with a catchy chorus and poignant guitar and percussion melodies. An example of how varied rhythms can work refreshingly well together. This last line is true for many songs on Habla including, “El Anuncio del Funky Robot” which gives you a disco poppy feel. “Envolvente” is a fiery song that consumes you with its catchy guitar riffs and perfectly harmonized female vocals. Funk doesn’t get any better than this! Big Pollo Funk manages to be thought provoking, and easy to listen to. If you love melody, lyrics that mean something, beautiful vocals, and catchy guitars then Habla is for you. Visit Big Pollo Funk online: www.bigpollo.pe █

It was a Quinceanera for the LAMC this year and Kesta was in on the action. We worked hard and partied harder attending multiple concerts (sometimes two or three in the same day)! The Mercury Lounge Indie Showcase was chockfull of amazing talent including breakout Chilean singer (me llamo) Sebastian. We also loved Mexico’s Caloncho pop rock rhythms, and Cuba’s Danay Suarez who garnered lots of media attention during her debut show. The dance-a-thon at this year’s Prospect Park concert with Colombians ChocQuibTown and Argentine Illya Kuryaki on Thursday night was epic! I’ve never seen Brooklyn patrons remove the chairs for a make-shift dance floor but that’s exactly what happened this year! Friday was a day full of informative panels including how to make it to big festivals, and how to best promote your brand. The fun was followed by an awesome show at the exclusive SOB’s Acoustic showcase on Friday night, followed by a fun Gramercy Theatre performance where The Wookies (an electro synth band from Mexico) stole the show. We somehow still made it Brooklyn for the after-after party with DC stars Maracuyeah along with Canyon Cody from Nacional Records where our friend Tato Elera from Big Pollo Funk got onstage to rap a couple of songs. Saturday’s big concert in Central Park with Babasonicos and Juana Molina saw the best weather we’ve ever experienced in NYC and we wrapped it up with some reggae by Antidoping and Laguna Pai that night at D’Antigua in Queens. Can’t wait to see you for the Sweet 16 LAMC!

Summer love- Tips to make your long distance relationship work! Does absence really make the heart grow fonder? A recent study found that couples who live apart have more meaningful interactions than those who see each other daily. Those in long distance relationships shared more of their thoughts, feelings, and emotions and had more meaningful conversations. When we see someone every day it can be easier to take them for granted, or to spend time together just watching TV or socializing with others around, but not really being present with one another. Being far away from your loved one makes every interaction more precious, and it can lead to more conversations and sharing because communication is the only way to stay connected. Here is a breakdown of what makes a long distance relationship work: • You both have to be equally invested and interested in making it work. If both people aren’t willing to put in equal amounts of effort in maintaining frequent and meaningful communication, then it will lead to disappointment and hurt feelings.

Kesta Tropical Fest brought to the GMU Patriot Center four of the best Latin music acts on July 18th for a Friday filled with dancing, singing and great music. The party started right with Grupo Gale singing their hits and bringing the crowd into the right mood for the night. The crowd loved their rendition of their hit “Micaela”, dancing and singing along enthusiastically. The dancing continued as Orchesta Guayacan brought the house down with their hits such as “Te amo, Te extraño”. The ladies got a treat as each vocalist showed off their amazing dancing skills onstage individually, electrifying the audience. Next up was the famous Grupo Niche, a true legend, who got the audience to the peak of their excitement. With their elegant appearance and refined sound, they pleased the audience opening with their hit “Cali aji” and playing many of their enduring hits “Una Aventura”, “Sin Sentimientos”, “Gotas de Lluvia” and “Cali Pachanguero”. They also played one of their newest hits, “Estoy tocando el cielo com las manos”, part of their latest album. Last but not least was Jorge Celedon, who despite having an accordion-less set, continuously engaged his fans up onstage and later walked offstage to get closer to his fans. He thanked the audience for their support and respect, and of course, their applause. All in all, Kesta Tropical Fest was a night full of Colombian flavor and if you did not attend, you truly missed out on a great show! █
• Being able to see your loved one’s facial expressions while you talk makes a big difference. Make time to Skype or videochat often, daily if possible, or at least as often as you would see each other if you lived in the same city. Research shows that the available technology has been a major driver in the increase in long distance relationships. • Know your own limitations regarding jealousy. If you are someone who gets easily jealous in most relationships, then a long distance relationship is likely to become a source of anguish. Your loved one will most likely be socializing, going to parties, and doing most things without you (because you live far away) and then you’ll see pictures, and hear stories that will probably make you feel left out, or just all around terrible. Are you able to really trust your partner? Think about how realistic it will be for you to have a sense of peace and not constantly wonder if your loved one is being unfaithful. • You must be able to freely voice your fears, worries or jealousy to your partner and trust that you won’t be judged. We all have moments of weakness, and when we are able to share those feelings openly and receive support and understanding from our partner it can be extremely reassuring and lead to greater emotional intimacy. • It is not realistic to go without physical contact with your loved one for very long periods. You need to be able to visit each other on a fairly regular basis. Depending on how far away you live from each other this can get expensive.
Long distance relationships aren’t easy, but they can work. This won’t magically happen though, you have to make time and prioritize your relationship. █ Jazmin Moral www.jazminmoral.com is a licensed clinical social worker practicing in Rockville.
