LATIN ALTERNATIVE

/ JUNE 2013

By: Kala Fryman

LAMC panelists have included an array of artists to industry professionals, such as Calle 13, Jasmine Garsd from NPR’s Alt Latino, Raul Campos of KCRW, as well as social media experts.

Annually held in New York City, the LAMC returns this year from July 9-13 and is a meeting ground for more than just artists. Panelists and attendees include leading thinkers, entrepreneurs, journalists, marketers, managers and programmers in the Latin alternative music scene; with the diversity of Latin alternative music well represented in the conference’s activities. From rock, hip hop and electronica concerts across New York City drawing over 25,000 fans, to panel discussions concerning relevant issues in the music industry and networking opportunities, the LAMC is considered one of the most thorough conferences in Latin music. Past

A key part of the conference is the Discovery Program, which seeks to find new talent in the Latin alternative circuit. The winner gets to perform at a LAMC concert, is included in the conference compilation CD, promoted by LAMC and exposed to some of the industry’s biggest movers and shakers. For emerging artists, the LAMC is a huge opportunity to stand out, reach new audiences and gain a strong foothold in the Latin alternative industry. Past winners of the Discovery Program include Carla Morrison, Los Rakas, Kinky and Pacha Massive; many of which went on to gain popularity and return to headline LAMC concerts. Over the last 14 years, the LAMC has seen performances and collaborations with an incredible variety of artists such as Aterciopelados, Gustavo Cerati, Manu Chao, Bebe, Enrique Bunbury, Pistolera, Nortec Collective, Mala Rodriguez

and many more. Though the term “alternative music” may seem general and ambiguous, the LAMC capitalizes on this by encouraging a setting in which anyone and anything that may not identify as mainstream has validity and a place to be explored within the Latin music industry as whole. With past LAMC conferences averaging over 1,250 industry attendees, this year is shaping up to be bigger and better. For the first time, the conference has expanded its scope and anticipates including events dedicated to food, film, books, art and poetry. With that said, the artist lineup for this year’s LAMC performances do not disappoint! The party starts on Wednesday, July 10th at the LAMC Central Park Summer Stage with Cuarto Poder and Los Rakas, followed on Thursday, July 11th, with Lila Downs. On Friday, July 12th the good times move to Prospect Park for Nortec Collective Presents: Bostich and Fussible, Mexican Institute of Sound and Mariachi Flor de Toloache! On Saturday, July 13th the conference is set to close with a much awaited performance by Grammy-winning

artist Julieta Venegas alongside Mexico’s newest sweetheart, Carla Morrison. A refreshing aspect to the LAMC’s musical showcases is the strong presence of female artists. In an industry largely dominated by male talent, a conference of this magnitude featuring a majority of female headlining artists speaks volumes and adds extra significance to an already important event. The LAMC panels and exhibits at the New Yorker Hotel also promise to feature an exciting 4 days of discussions, insider information, and networking for both industry folks and musicians alike. Whether you’re into electronica or rock, constructive discussions or business opportunities, the 2013 Latin Alternative Music Conference has something for everyone and is a must for new and well-known acts alike. Registration is discounted through June 2 for bands and companies, and concert fans may attend various showcases around the city free of charge. Check out www.latinalternative. com for more information and updates on panels, exhibitions and performances! █

ROCK

By: Manu Mayor

usion in music is nothing new, but when it’s done well, it can be gamechanging. Miki Gonzalez is a gamechanger. Miki was born in Spain but moved to Peru at a young age. He quickly decided he wanted to try and make music a career. Miki formed his first band with Wicho Garcia and Pelo Madueño, who later went on to become a big part of the Peruvian rock scene. Miki Gonzalez had a clear idea of the sounds he was looking for, his mix of rock with Afro-Peruvian rhythms became a hit. One of his most popular songs was the hit-single “Akundun!”. Catchy, refreshing and fun. Other more straight forward new-wave songs, included “Vamos a Tocache”. Vamos a Tocache has all the makings of a proper 80’s anthem. The video for that song was shot in the jungle town of Tocache. At the time, Tocache was a domestic terrorist infested town, outside the government’s control. Hardly seemed like a place for a fun music video, but Miki’s songs, videos and lyrics were always a mix of contrasts. A fun beat and video, to contrast a dangerous and downtrodden place. Miki obviously likes to experiment with genres, that means his own songs do not sound alike. He can switch it up from new-wave to reggae with a laid-back song such as “El Mar”, where he serenely talks about the pleasures of the beach. To everyone’s surprise, Miki Gonzalez came out of left field in the 2,000’s and dropped an electronic album with andean and amazon sounds. That album called Inka Beats was a critically acclaimed commercial success through-out Latin-America. A game-changer. Music from that album is literally everywhere. If you have flown in Avianca, you have probably heard it during boarding. The album is hypnotic,

with sounds that invite you to completely tune-out. This was followed by two more electronic albums that further explored sounds from Afro-Peru and the coastal region. Miki Gonzalez’ latest work is a mix between Peruvian and Spanish sounds. Unique work for sure. Recently though, Miki Gonzalez has returned to his guitar roots. His new single, “Chocolate” marks a return to the town of Tocache. The same town that inspired one of his original hits and music videos. Gone is the dangerous, terrorist-tagged place that Miki first visited in the 80’s. Thanks to a boom in cacao seed exports and the Peruvian economy in general, Tocache is now a much improved town. The new video for “Chocolate” shows the new face of the town and an older, more seasoned Miki Gonzalez. Gone is the crazy Sideshow Bob-looking young man that liked to play with his music. In his place, is now Miki Gonzalez, the game-changer. From the dark days of Peru in the 80’s, to the upheaval of the 90’s and through the prosperity of the 2,000’s... Miki’s sounds have been a constant presence. A presence that sometimes provided relief, sometimes introspection, or sometimes just plain fun. This July 13th, we all have a chance to return to Tocache with him. Miki Gonzalez will be playing all of his new and old hits at The State Theater alongside Peru’s new generation of fusion masters, Bareto. Este Julio 13, todos vamos a Tocache! POP

Jesse Huerta and Joy Huerta— the pop-rock sibling duo known as Jesse & Joy—never expected to become Latin Grammy winners or Grammy Award nominees.

Growing up in a home with parents whose voices could carry a tune and whose vinyl collection included the likes of Aretha Franklin, James Taylor, Johnny Cash and Pedro Infante, Jesse and Joy were saturated in great music early on. As children, they even created their own makeshift instruments with Joy strumming a tennis racket like a guitar and Jesse striking buckets with spoons like drums. Yet neither of them aspired to become singer-songwriters, in fact Jesse dreamed of playing professional basketball and would spend seven hours a day practicing. Joy, overcome with stage fright, would only perform in front of her brother and shied away from performing in front of large crowds—a major deterrent in pursuing a career in the music industry. When Jesse and Joy were nineteen and fifteen, respectively, they began to pave the way for their musical success by writing songs and producing demos with their father. By 2005, Jesse and Joy were signed to Warner Music Mexico, only four years after their first attempts at song writing. Eight months later, Joy faced her fear at the 2005 Teletón México by performing in front of 100,000 people. Soon after releasing their debut album, Esta Es Mi Vida in August 2006, the duo received two Latin Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Pop Album by a Duo or Group with Vocals, and an MTV Music Awards Latin America nomination for Promising Artist. The brother and sister won the best new artist award, marking their first Latin Grammy win. Their debut album was certified platinum, selling over 100,000 copies, and the album’s first single “Espacio Sideral” peaked at number 1 across several radio stations, reaching the top 20 on the Mexican Charts and Billboard Latin Pop Charts. Since then, Jesse & Joy have continued to release critically acclaimed albums. Their sophomore album Electricidad went gold and their latest album ¿Con Quién Se Queda El Perro? was certified platinum,

selling more than 180,000 copies. The album received five Latin Grammy nominations, and won each category—taking awards for record of the year, song of the year, best short form music video and contemporary pop vocal album. Jesse & Joy also received their first Grammy Award nomination for best Latin pop album. In a Grammy interview, Joy explained that she found out about the Grammy nomination after a concert when her friend called her saying congratulations. Joy, unaware of the nominations, called her manager and he confirmed that the brother-and-sister group were Grammy-nominated. The two were extremely excited by the nomination, and in Jesse’s own words, he was “stoked.” After winning a Latin Grammy Award in 2008, Jesse told billboard.com that he felt like both his sister and him were reaping the benefits of their hard work and dedication.

Five years, later they have five Latin Grammy Awards, and it seems like they’ve garnered quite the success. Jesse & Joy’s music can be purchased on iTunes, listened to as the opening and closing theme songs for telenovelas like Tormenta en el Paraiso or La que no podía amar, but on June 6 the duo can be heard loud and clear live at The Fillmore Silver Spring, MD. SALSA

By: Darlene Campos

ictor Manuelle, a hit Puerto Rican salsa singer, has been entertaining audiences all over the world for more than twenty years. Born Victor Manuel Ruiz on September 20, 1967 in the Bronx, New York City, he was raised in Isabella, Puerto Rico. Since Puerto Rico is home to salsa, Manuelle found himself immersed in the beats, rhythms, and influences of the music genre and has never left. Gilberto Santa Rosa, known as El Caballero de la Salsa (the Gentleman of Salsa), was a major inspiration for Manuelle’s own musical works. In the mid1980s, Santa Rosa held a concert at Manuelle’s high school and he invited Manuelle to join him on the stage. This would be Manuelle’s first public performance, but definitely not his last. Santa Rosa then persuaded bandleader Don Periñon to hire Manuelle as a backup singer after which eventually, Manuelle would go solo. Quickly coming into his own as “El Sonero de la Juventud” (The singer of youths), Victor Manuelle identified early on with salsa romantica but experimented with other sounds like vallenato and even reggaeton. One thing that separates Victor Manuelle from his counterparts such as Marc Anthony, is that Manuelle has neither recorded in English nor ventured into pop. By the early 1990s, Manuelle was producing his first album titled ‘Justo a Tiempo’ ( Just in Time). However, his third eponymous album ‘Victor Manuelle,’ released in 1996, sold half a million copies and reached platinum status and the second position on the salsa music charts. ‘Victor Manuelle’ was his first commercial success, however, it wasn’t until 2004 that Manuelle finally had a number one hit. This hit, called ‘Tengo Ganas,’ (I’m in the Mood) appeared on his ninth album titled ‘Travesia,’ (Crossing). ‘Travesia’ was produced by Emilio Estefan, (married to Cuban singer Gloria Estefan) whose known for producing

albums for famous Latin singers such as Charlie Zaa, Marc Anthony, and Carlos Vives. In July 2003, Manuelle sang an acappella version of Celia Cruz’s renowned song ‘La Vida Es Un Carnaval’ (Life is a Carnival) at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral during Cruz’s funeral. In 2010, Billboard magazine dedicated an issue to Manuelle to celebrate his success as a musician and his nomination for Tropical Latin Artist of the Year. By the end of 2010, Manuelle sold out three concerts at the Center for Fine Arts in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In addition, Manuelle has also sold out concerts at such prestigious venues as Madison Square Garden and Carnegie Hall. Manuelle’s latest album titled ‘Busco un Pueblo,’ (Looking for a Village) was released on January 24, 2012. It reached number two on the Tropical Albums chart and number four on the Latin Albums chart. ‘Busco un Pueblo’ contains the song ‘Si Tu Me Besas’ (If You Kiss Me), written by Oscarcito Hernandez, which became a number one hit nationally. When Manuelle isn’t producing an album or touring, he is a family man. He is currently divorced, but he has three children – two daughters and one son. He cites spending time with his family as one of his favorite hobbies. Victor Manuelle is currently on tour and will be appearing at The Palace on Friday June 21st at 9pm. The Palace is located at 13989 Jefferson Davis Highway Woodbridge, VA 22191. Tickets are $40. To purchase tickets, please visit www.tickeri.com. Jory Boy’s career is growing like wildfire, as he continues touring and selling out appearances every where he performs. His latest singles “Romeo y Julieta” and “Sigo Esperando” will be performed live at the Diamond Hall, on June 22 in Annandale, VA. He is mostly known as Jory Boy “El De La J Papi”, but was born Fernando Sierra, on July 5, 1986 in Carolina, Puerto Rico and raised in a humble environment by a single mother. Jory moved to Camden, N.J. at the age of 10, and has always shown a great interest in the Latin genre of Reggaeton. Early on, Jory had an altercation with his family and decided to leave home which is when his journey to find his calling began. He wandered and participated in many talent shows and other sporadic appearances performing anywhere he could get his hands on. Jory’s childhood dream was to become a professional singer, which he finally reached when he paired up with his partner Nova (aka Fermando Castillo) in 2003. When their first single “Besame” became a favorite of the Spanish-speaking audiences in countries like Colombia, Panama, Chile, Venezuela, Mexico, Dominican Republic and cities in the United States. “We are impressed with everything we’re doing without even having released an album. Besame has had tremendous success and the support in Latin America has been impressive and we are well pleased with that,” said Jory in an online interview, who also shares that with Daddy Yankee’s hits like “Pata Boom” and “Aprovecha,” he’s

thankful for the love and support he receives from fans through Facebook and Twitter messages. His fans are so dedicated that Jory even got a pencil portrait in Barranquilla, Colombia done by one of his fans. “You will go far. You are the best in Flow,” said a fan in the singer’s Facebook official page. Jory has already recorded with many renowned artists such as Daddy Yankee, Gotay “El Autentiko” and “Zion & Lennox” (with his cousin Zion) while being considered by critics as “one of the best voices in his style and with a very promising future.” Most recently, Jory collaborated with Wisin from Wisin y Yandel on a song titled Sistema, which premiered on the radio on May 11th, 2013. It doesn’t always happen that a solo artist makes it on their own after being part of a successful duo. However, it was the love he received from his supporters and the success he experienced during the years singing and performing with Nova, that convinced Jory to venture out into a solo career. Well, clearly he has not stopped since and shows no signs of slowing down. His new single “Romeo y Julieta” is available on iTunes with the kind of beat that calls you to the dance floor. The singer, who has performed for audiences that exceeded 2,000 to 10,000 people all over the country and in South America, has proved that being a solo artist, is the achievement of a bigger dream. If you like great music, and master Reggaeton, don’t miss out on Jory Live at the Diamond Hall, in Annandale, VA on June 22nd. Tickets are available on www.tickeri. com. His musical career is over twenty years strong and his newest project brings Carlos back to the spotlight and back into our homes. To arrive now at Corazón Profundo, we look back at Carlos Vives’ long and winding journey that celebrates the road of discovery, of life and love for his land, Colombia.

La Provincia, La Tierra Del Olvido & The Vives Sound Carlos Vives has spent time with his hands in the fire – acting on stage, on television and producing television. His success in various telenovelas and shows landed him the role of Vallenato composer Rafael Escalona in a television musical on the life of Escalona. When Carlos recorded the soundtrack for the musical it rekindled the spark inside him for his love of music. This spark would later be known as Clásicos de la Provincia, an album that shocked Colombians to the core with his new take on

traditional songs with a fusion of styles and arrangements that gave the classics a new life. The fusion we heard in Clásicos de la Provincia turned Carlos Vives into the man responsible for putting Colombian Vallenato sounds in mainstream radio. He took Paisa music around the globe with the success of his follow up album, La Tierra del Olvido. Labeled by critics as the most important album in the Colombian music industry in the last 50 years, it is without a doubt, one of the best Latin music albums ever made. It’s powerful, influential and honest. Déjame Entrar into a Corazón Profundo Carlos Vives’ fusion of Vallenato, Cumbia, AfroCaribbean rhythms and Pop came together to create a genre known today as Tropi Pop. This fusion earned Vives the first Grammy ever awarded to a Colombian artist. His success grew with each new album and their respective standout tracks. “El Amor de Mi Tierra” is best known for the singles “Fruta Fresca”, “19 de Noviembre” and “El Amor De Mi Tierra.” Later followed “Déjame Entrar”, that earned him his first Anglo and Latin Grammy award. In 2004, Carlos returned with “El Rock De Mi Pueblo” which featured the chart topping “Como Tu”. Each record enhanced his sound and lyrics allowing us to grow along with Carlos and explore all of the elements that make his sound so close to el corazón latino.

/ 15

Carlos is currently touring his newest project, “Corazón Profundo”. This albums features “Volví A Nacer” and “Como Le Gusta A Tu Cuerpo” which have become the summer anthems of 2013. Corazón Profundo pulsates to the beat of Colombian percussion and is complimented with a masterful acordeón that is so brilliant you can’t help but think it’s speaking to you. This is an album that is true to the Vives style we all know and love: Paisa, Alegría y Pasión. The Vives Legacy Carlos Vives has become a synonym for the word Colombia. His music takes his audience on a trip through the paisajes and culture of the land of Colombia. The love and pride he feels for his country is an infectious and contagious feeling that warms the soul and fills the heart of every person his music reaches. You cannot talk about Colombia without mentioning Carlos Vives. This man’s story is set in stone. And his Legacy will live on forever. Some of the biggest Latin music stars today cite Vives as an influence. Both Juanes and Fonseca have cited the album “Clásicos de la Provincia” as a benchmark in their sound and musical identity. Shakira has also talked about the Vives influence, most noticeable in her vocals on the “Pies Descalzos” album and Julieta Venegas’ accordion playing and use of the instrument is a clear result of the Vives sound influence. New generations know the side of Carlos as the judge on The Voice Colombia. Other generations know him as the man that covered “La Gota Fría” and revived Colombian music. If you belong to my generation, you know who “Mayté” is and danced many times to that beat. Independently of how you know his music or how you recognize his sound, kick off your summer with Carlos Vives at The Patriot Center on July 24. We guarantee this show will become one of your favorite summer concert memories! █

By: Alexandra Lucia-Miller

olombian pop singer Juanes has shared his musical gift and road to superstardom in his recently released book Chasing The Sun (Persiguiendo el Sol), while embarking on a world tour that spans across nearly thirty U.S. cities and seven countries. Although the Medellin born singer-songwriter and musician grew up in the eighties, during the height of drug lord Pablo Escobar’s reign and witnessed significant violence including family kidnappings; he focused on developing his musical talents and avoided major bouts of conflict. According to a recent Huffington Post report, he grew up listening to tango, bachata and also maintained a healthy obsession with Metallica. His obsession led to the formation of his first band Ekhymosis in 1988. The band shared some success in Colombia, producing and releasing five albums before their breakup. Following the band’s breakup, Juanes pursued a solo career and in 2000 he released Fijate Bien followed by the 2002 album Un Dia Normal. Un Dia Normal went multi-platinum in several countries and his hit “A Dios Le Pido” was one of the many songs that garnered the singer five Latin Grammy Awards in 2003. But this was just the beginning. His commitment to continuously cultivate his musical talents and create new material has certainly been rewarded. In his career he has won twenty Latin Grammy Awards, two Grammy Awards, sixteen Premio Lo Nuestro Awards, nine MTV Awards, a 2005 nomination for TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in The World, nine NRJ Awards (to name a few) and has even appeared on Sesame Street in 2012 for Hispanic Heritage month, to teach a little Spanish. The singer has released five albums since beginning his solo career in 2000. In 2004 he released Mi Sangre followed by La Vida...Es Un Ratico (2007) and the 2010 album P.A.R.C.E..

While his talents may receive international recognition and praise, he remains true to his Colombian roots. He asserts that his culture is essential to his musical development and consciously chooses to sing and write in Spanish. Although he is bilingual, he rarely sings in English and expresses that speaking Spanish is a part of his identity and that he always wants to remain true to who he is. All five albums that he has released were written and performed in Spanish. It’s hard to imagine the busy singer has time for anything other than creating award winning hits. But, he’s an avid husband, father and humanitarian. He started the Mi Sangre Foundation, which helps victims of antipersonnel mines and has performed in numerous benefit concerts promoting peace and anti-violence throughout Colombia, Cuba and Latin America. The socially conscious songwriter also serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for United for Colombia, a non-profit organization that raises awareness about land mines in Colombia. He also shows his support for Survival International, an organization that supports the rights of indigenous people. While a portion of his book is devoted to his humanitarian efforts, Chasing The Sun is an intimate account of experiences and influences. It includes many personal photographs and memories. Immediately following the release, Juanes embarked on a U.S. tour to promote, sign and discuss his drive behind writing the book. He confessed, “This [book] is an expression of pure friendship and a sincere way of saying thanks to everyone who has supported my music over the years. It’s not my job to write books, Not in the least,…But I felt that if I really did this, it would be for you to learn who I truly am: who it is behind the songs you hear, Why I make the music I make, and why I think the way I think.” His book signing tour took him to New York, Los Angeles, Texas and Florida. While he now resides in the United States, Juanes remains committed to promoting peace and reducing violence in Colombia. He has created opportunities to raise awareness of ongoing violence through the power of his music. The veteran performer will continue to enlighten our ears and souls with romantic and passionate songs about life, while promoting peace and remaining true to his culture. Chasing The Sun was released on April 2nd and is available in both English and Spanish. Juanes will delight his fans during at concert at the Filene Center at Wolftrap, on June 19th. Tickets are $48 In-house or $25 lawn. █

FESTIVAL

By: Juan Leon

l Zol 107.9 FM’s sixth annual Verano Zol music festival (“Un dia lleno de diversion, comida, y buena music”) comes to Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, Maryland on June 23. Ticket prices are still very reasonable but have gone up a bit from last year’s event ($25 in advance, $35 at the door day of event).

Toby Love: Puerto Rican descended, Bronx born, bachata inspired artist Toby Love is experiencing success with his Billboard Latin Tropical charts topping single “Todo Mi Amor Eres Tu” off his latest album, 2013’s Amor Total. The former backup singer for Aventura went solo in 2006 with a self-titled LP released through Sony Records. After a hit performance at Verano Zol in 2012, Toby Love is back again.

Last year’s event featured Tigres del Norte, Toby Love (returning this year), 3BallMty, 24 Horas (returning this year), and many more.

N’Klabe: Representing salsa at this year’s Verano Zol, the Puerto Rican group N’Klabe will be performing hits from their decade long repertoire.

Below, check out Kesta’s profile on just some of the artists who will be playing their music at this year’s Verano Zol--

Juan Esteban: Relatively new on the Latin music scene, Cuban salsero Juan Esteban brings his diverse array of Pop salsa to Verano Zol 2013. His 2012 self-titled debut features “Bum, Bum, Bum”, “Te Equivocaste”, and “Contigo Quiero Estar”, an excellent cover of Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You”.

Angel y Khriz: The Puerto Rican duo famous for such hits as “Ven Bailalo”, “La Vecina” and “Na De Na” will be at Verano Zol hot on the heels of their latest single release, the infectiously bubbly “My Corazon”. The duo’s fifth studio album, Los Internacionales, is slated for release sometime later this year. Hector Acosta: El Torito comes to Verano Zol in June to bring his singular brand of merengue, bachata, and bolero to the DMV area. His latest album, Con El Corazon Abierto, features the romantically defiant ballad “No Morire”, a duet with Pepe Aguilar (“Perdoname”) and the sincere “No Soy Un Hombre Malo”. Hermanos Rosario: The brothers Tono, Pepe, Rafa, and Luis (Los Hermanos Rosario) have enjoyed a long and storied career (starting in 1978 with Vienen Acabando) in their native Dominican Republic and across Latin America. Come and watch them perform their biggest merengue hits at Verano Zol. The brothers’ latest releases include 2009’s Tu Querias Mas (single) and 2007’s La Bomba.

Gilberto Santa Rosa: The legendary “Caballero de La Salsa” brings his bolero and salsa style honed over a 30-year career to this year’s Verano Zol festival. STYLE

By: Alicia Yim

In a perfect world, we would celebrate summer vacationing up and down the coastline all season long. For those of us tied to a 9-5 here in the city, we make the best of the situation and find ourselves a nice spot poolside on a rooftop instead. You’ll likely be spending most of that time around the pool rather than in it, because we all know that “poolside” really means “barside.” So I recommend you save your collection of basic two-piece swimwear for tanning, and try out a one-piece stunner instead. Designers have put out an impressive range of not your mother’s one-piece suits. Today’s swimwear designs parallel many of the popular trends seen in everyday clothing. Meaning many of your favorite motifs have been carried over from your everyday wardrobe into this aquatic setting. The graduated light to dark ombré trend has been seen in hair color, nail design, and clothing. This look is perfect for a beautifully detailed crochet onepiece swimsuit. Layer a pair of high waisted denim shorts on top for extra coverage and to create a fun, flirty look. A one-piece suit can show plenty of skin while providing an appropriate amount of coverage for conversation and cocktails. Cutouts in the right places can draw attention to the skinniest part of your torso while your belly and hips remain covered. Another option is either a halter top or tube top onepiece that covers your waist, belly, and hips while drawing attention to your neckline and décolletage. Any of these styles can be paired with a flowing highlow skirt, wrap mini skirt, or fitted skinny leg capri pant with metallic thread detailing to imitate today’s popular bodysuit trend. Above all else, if you are lounging around the pool during the daytime, do not forget to protect your skin from an overdose of sunrays. A stylishly casual panama hat will protect sensitive skin on your face and scalp, helping to prevent future wrinkles. Sunscreen will keep your skin hydrated and prevent sunburn, as well as prevent the development of unwanted tanlines.

LOCAL TALENT

/ JUNE 2013

By: Rosario Garcia

La Riña (The Brawl) was born in 2011 when lead front man Will “Wix666” Gamez, shared the idea of starting a metal band with his cousin Daniel Reyes. Daniel set out to find interested musicians and didn’t have to look far as he already knew one, his own cousin RJ Cadenas. Although RJ was playing keyboards for a salsa band at the time, Daniel knew that he was a multiinstrumentalist who could play guitar, bass, and drums was interested in rock and other musical styles. Daniel didn’t hesitate to ask him to join his band and eventually RJ agreed to attend a jam session. It was one big happy family and La Riña was born. They chose the name because they wanted to play an aggressive, socially conscious, protest type of metal that would have a message beyond drugs, sex, and rock and roll. RJ eventually recruited his brother Juan “Destroyer” Cadenas to play the drums and complete the line-up. A little later, the band connected with local bassist Omar “La Pata” Ucanan who also performs in other local bands such as Zakke. Until recently, La Riña also had a second guitarist, Yasser Renderos, however Yasser

left to pursue another project. RJ explains that the first song La Riña ever wrote titled, “Liberate”, was a basic metal song with no defined vocals and a straightforward metal riff. RJ jokes, “We actually used to play a Sepultura cover, and we knew it was a terrible version when our original songs sounded better than our Sepultura cover.” Will adds, “After that, we started to build and develop our own sound, leaving the covers behind to start focusing on the type of music we wanted to play.” The band found it difficult to focus on just one style of metal. Will adds, “We wanted to make open-minded music. Sometimes metal heads only listen to one genre and never listen to anything else. We wanted to break down those barriers and make ‘groove metal’ which is a style that samples components of thrash, a little bit of metal core, death, black, and hardcore.” RJ shares that growing up he listened to bands like Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Papa Roach, Aborigenes and Heroes del Silencio which helped to truly

define his musical style. That paired with his knowledge of the keyboards, guitar, drums, and bass have helped La Riña expand their musical style, while Will takes care to write the lyrics and define vocals for the band. Will’s day job is being a free-lance reporter covering Latino news, specifically reporting on immigrant’s rights for various Spanish speaking local newspapers. He tells me he often brings his work home when writing lyrics for La Riña. “I like to write songs speaking out against social injustice, and the trials and tribulations of Latino’s here in the US,” explains Will, “I think our music should have a message, granted sometimes an angry and aggressive one, but a message nonetheless.” Despite their music advocating Latino and immigrant rights, and the fact they are an all Latino band ( Will, RJ, and Juan are all from El Salvador, while Omar is Peruvian), La Riña’s fan base is varied. “It’s hard to be a Latino metal band here in DC,” shares RJ, “It doesn’t help that we don’t fit cleanly into the metal scene in general

since we fuse several genres. It’s a constant struggle.” La Riña is currently focusing on recording a 4 song demo featuring their songs, “Together we rise”, “Justice is Symbolic”, “Something for nothing”, and “Perros” scheduled for release late this summer after which they’re planning a short tour along the East Coast. With a growing number of fans throughout the DC area, Latin alternative music has left a mark on the nation’s capitol and you have a chance to cement that by going to the Latin Rock show on Friday, June 7th at the legendary Howard Theatre. Aside from La Riña, there are 7 other local artists performing including Machetres, Versus, Metanium, Sentius, and other artists ranging from rock, to pop, to Latin reggae. RADIO PERSONALITY

By: Aline Barros

“You are Puerto Rican, you are never going to make it. You people are losers.” Pedro Biaggi was 16 years old when he heard those infamous words and with a determined attitude, he only replied saying, “So, I am not going to make it because I’m Puerto Rican? Watch! I’m going to make it because I am Puerto Rican.” Today Pedro Biaggi is one of the most successful radio announcers and hosts one of the highest rated morning shows in the country. The vibrant radio host is known for his “encendio’” ways and eloquent morning voice on El Zol 107.9 FM. He is a person with a huge smile and no fear when he is behind the mic …and even when he is not. The Puerto Rican, son of Daise Biaggi, who he lovingly calls, “the center of my universe,” is a dynamic communicator with respect for his listeners and thankfulness for every workday where he affirms, “I’m you, I’m your voice.” Before going on air, he prays and studies the bible, “You’ve got to have a spiritual preparation when you go on. It gives you a greater appreciation about things. And to say, ‘Buenos Dias, son las Cinco de la mañana’, you need to do something uplifting and enlightening that brings your spirit to a better place”, he concludes. Pedro overcame poverty in Puerto Rico and moved to New York City at the age 16 with only 10 dollars in his pocket, and he still says, “it couldn’t get any worse than

that.” But in a culture where faith in God literally moves mountains, Biaggi believed fiercely that everything was going to be all right, and that he was doing the right thing. “Anytime things got really, really bad, my faith got me to the other side,” says the announcer. Biaggi suffered through a very difficult childhood, where he was sexually abused at the tender age of four. He shares that he had every excuse to grow up to be a complete failure, however, he chose to be a survivor and go after his dreams in the big apple. He wanted to be a radio personality, “I used to dream as a child being in a radio station in Puerto Rico. I used to escape from my house and go to the radio station,” he remembers fondly. Although Biaggi’s life has been full of up and downs, (at moments he lived in the streets and there were times when he had nothing to eat), soon after arriving in New York City, his perseverance paid off and he got a scholarship to the American Ballet Theatre. He soon realized that wasn’t what he wanted in life, however, he didn’t miss a beat of positivism and continued to move forward. “I come from a society with extreme levels of poverty, lack of education, and so much drama that I really didn’t have possibilities to be a success except that my capacity to dream is stronger than any other problem that I may have,” he says. He eventually made his way to music director at WADO radio in New York but quit when his father died in 1988. Years passed and Biaggi began to walk away from the path that inspired him to move from Puerto Rico in the first place. He worked as a publicist and promoter for divisions of Sony’s and Warner’s Latin music departments. But one day decided to start all over again, and sooner than later became the “Pedro Biaggi en las Mañanas” that we all know and love.

When listening to the show it’s hard not to feel immersed in his monumental positive energy. Pedro is a strong believer that dreams can become a reality and help you conquer the world. He credits his own success to hard work, strength, and faith, “If you don’t believe in your dreams who is going to believe in your dreams?” he asks. If listeners have a better morning because of Biaggi and his team, imagine how much better the world would be if his “encendio ways” spread beyond the DMV area? You can listen to “Pedro Biaggi en las Mañanas” every morning, Monday through Friday, from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. on El Zol, 107.9 FM. You can also follow Pedro Biaggi on facebook.com/ pedrito.biaggi and on: twitter.com/ pedrobiaggishow. █

ALBUM REVIEW

Jarabedepalo At The Howard Theatre By: Ellen Flores

Piano Y Voz was an intimate and soulful show that took us on a voyage inside the heart and soul of Pau Donés, lead frontman of Spain’s rock sweethearts JarabeDePalo. Pau offered fans a rare and exclusive insight into his creative mind; reading intimate love letters and decrypting how various songs (the infamous La Flaca) were crafted based on real-life stories and people. A simple yet welcoming stage setup transformed the beautiful Howard Theatre stage into an intimate living room, where the 800+ live audience became honored guests and where their gracious host offered variations of the most well-known (and cherished) JarabeDePalo love songs. The stripped format of the songs accompanied only by the piano, vocals, an acoustic guitar, and a couple of Conga drums, transfixed the audience with the web of stories that celebrated love, coped with loss, and ultimately, reminded us that even though there is no greater risk than expressing your love and fearing rejection, there is also no greater satisfaction and reward than falling in love. Piano Y Voz was one of the most special and effortless performances that has graced the stages of Washington DC this month. Iconic Jarabe songs like La Flaca, Grita and Agua, converged with heart piercing anecdotes that gave these oh-so-well-known songs a new life. Pau Donés is truly a modern wordsmith with a timeless heart and contagious optimism for spreading the gospel of love to all, one love letter, one rose (several lucky ladies received one by Pau Dones himself ) and one song at a time. Overall a magical experience for anyone who was present! █

Alejandro Sanz Concert Highlights By: Manu Mayor

As soon as the lights were dimmed on May 7th at DAR Constitution Hall the crowd went wild. Only a projected shadow image could be seen behind the white curtains, on the other end was Alejandro Sanz. The curtains went up and Sanz hit it with stride. He delighted his loyal fans with new and old hits from his extensive repertoire. We have covered many concerts and only the very best artists sound just like their recorded selves. Alejandro Sanz is definitely one of them. To our surprise, at a Sanz concert, you will not only hear romantic ballads, there is something for everyone as Alejandro’s band serves up some surprisingly heave guitar sounds and a some excellent guitar solos. The music is also brought to the next level by the dramatic lighting. Despite the musical goodness and quality visuals, we are sure that what most of the ladies will take away from the night, is having seen their passionate charmer up close and personal... especially the woman that evaded security, climbed onstage, and clung onto Alejandro Sanz wearing the biggest smile of her life. █

Released to Spanish speaking countries in 2011, Julio Iglesias’ 1- Greatest Hits: Deluxe Edition receives an official US release. With 37 of Iglesias’ best known hits and covers over 2 discs, 1 serves as an excellent survey of iconic Iglesias’ career for newcomers to Iglesias’ oeuvre and for established fans Iglesias has re-recorded some (not all) of his biggest hits for the compilation. As someone who did not experience Julio’s first era of commercial success seeing the extent of the pop ground Iglesias covers is impressive. The depth of Iglesias pop impact is evidenced by his collaborations with such luminaries as Diana Ross (“All of You”), Dolly Parton (“When You Tell Me That You Love Me”), and Frank Sinatra (“Summer Wind”), which along with the rest of his English language tracks, compose the first disc of the collection. The second disc contains his Spanish (and Portuguese and French) language hits, including “Hey (Spanish Version”, his cover of “Corazon Partio”, and “Me Olvide De Vivir”. █

Pitbull Brings Down the Casa at the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore By: Veronica Fuentes Brown

On Saturday May 18, Mr. Worldwide brought the sunny beaches and hip shaking sounds of Miami to the 138th Preakness Stakes, an event that is renowned as Baltimore’s biggest party. Amid the thrills of betting and lots of big, floppy hats, Pitbull performed to an approving crowd who fistpumped and danced through the entire one hour set despite the gloomy weather. In his signature dapper black suit and shades, Pitbull energized the crowd with a medley of his mash-ups and radio singles. Tracks like “Feel This Moment,” his new duet with Christina Aguilera, met old school songs like “Mentirosa”. He performed about two minutes of each song, bass pumping ever louder as the crowd jumped enthusiastically to each hit, their commemorative green Preakness cups filled to the brim with beer. With a drum set complete with bongo drums, Pitbull and his drummer built up the Latino flavor that had young and old dancing away. The crowd was largely All-American, yet they responded to Pitbull’s shout outs in Spanish and swayed their bodies to a Cuban mambo track he played. As Pitbull himself said, “Music is the universal language that brings everybody together,” that, paired with drinks, and his contagious beat turned his concert crowd into one big happy Latin family. █

La Santa Cecilia’s stylish, warm blend of cumbia, tango, blues and more, makes the group’s debut full-length album a welcome addition to the Cambrian explosion that’s seen Latin music fused with genres outside and within the culture. A bit softer in the middle next to strong opening (“Nuestra Señora La Reina De Los Angeles”, “Monedita”) and closing tracks (“Ice El Hielo”), Treinta Dias continues the pleasant genre crossing La Santa Cecilia joyfully explored in their EPs (La Santa Cecilia, Noche y Citas, El Valor). Anchored by La Marisoul’s bluesy voice, Treinta Dias is on a search for the personal political crisis in modern life. On “Treinta Dias”, La Santa Cecilia incisively connects the societal failing of economic poverty with the individual crisis of spiritual/emotional poverty and lack of love (“No hay luz sin tus ojos/ No hay hogar sin tus brazos/ No hay alimento sin tus besos/ No hay treinta dias para amar”). The great “Ice El Hielo” is myth-making in action: a poetic epic that crystallizes a national event. █
