This openness, an awareness and understanding of community (perhaps best exemplified musically by the Mi gente! cry uttered by so many Latino artists), is also evident in the types of acts and artists performing at Verano Zol.
They demonstrate the innovative nature of Latin pop artists and how Latino audiences are accustomed to and expect an array of genres and styles in their music. The “accident” of Latin emigration to the United States from disparate flags has advanced and changed the course of Latin pop music in form and philosophy. Verano Zol’s myriad acts represent the pop artist’s attempt at connection with his/her community at large. While prices for mammoth concert events that purport to represent underground and independent subgenres bleed fans with unconscionable ticket prices (we see you Bonnaroo, Ultra Music Festival, Lollapalooza, and Pitchfork Music Fest), Verano Zol keeps entrance fees reasonable ($15 early bird prices), reflecting Verano Zol’s status as an exchange with the community instead of an exploitation of customers. The accommodations offered at Verano Zol for children
The stylistic mash-up developed by DJ prodigies 3Ball MTY (Erick Rincon, Sheeqo Beat, DJ Otto) incorporates norteño, house, cumbia, and tribal into the emerging trend/ genre of tribal guarachero. 3Ball MTY’s approach to music (energetic, soulful, danceable) perfectly encompasses the spirit of Verano Zol. 3Ball’s pastiche draws from old and new, illuminating the way the new order of pop music consumes and transforms traditional forms. Revealing the commonalities among Latin nations and underlining musical unity, 3ball’s rhythms strikingly echo Peruvian cumbia and chicha. Puerto Rico’s Chencho (Orlando Javier Valle Vega) and Maldy (Edwin Vazquez Vega)—also known as Plan B- will perform some pieces from their prolific, collabo-heavy oeuvre. The reggaeton duo is loved for their slick, modern, pleasure-based tunes such as Frikitona (famously sampled in Yolanda B. Cool’s “Afro nuts”), Si No Le Contesto, and Es Un Secreto (remixed with the great Tego Calderon). Plan B’s upcoming Love and Sex album follows 2010’s House of Pleasure.
Legendary Sinaloa band Los Tigres del Norte joins Verano Zol with their modernization of the norteño genre. Their latest release, MTV Unplugged: Los Tigres del Norte and Friends charts the veteran band’s movement into the present. Aside from the obvious methods of Los Tigres’ attempts to stay current (with MTV’s youth grabbing backing), MTV Unplugged shows how the band understands the importance of vitality and a constant effort to stay connected to the pop audience. Thus the updated remakes with current pop artists of classic Tigres del Norte songs: Mi Buena Suerte with Diego Torres, and Somos Mas Americanos (the astounding, striking lyric, “Yo no cruze la frontera/ La frontera me cruzo” goes deeper than mere pro-immigration rhetoric espoused by La Raza types) with the always opportunistic Zack de la Rocha. Los Tigres del Norte’s incorporation of diverse styles and artists that matter to their audience and public ties them (more closely than would appear on first glance) to 3Ball MTY and Plan B. Other artists performing at Verano Zol include Carlos y Alejandra, Los Adolescentes, Eddy Herrera, K-Risma band and many more. wo of the biggest names in Mexican music, singers Joan Sebastian and Pepe Aguilar, are teaming up for a US tour with 15 major cities confirmed to-date, including New York and Washington, DC! For the first time in 25 years, a Latin music equestrian show will play arenas the size of the Izod Center and the Patriot Center. The singers announced the upcoming tour this month during a press conference at the legendary Pico Rivera venue in Los Angeles, naming the tour “DEJANDO HUELLA...UNA HISTORIA MUSICAL.” We are lucky enough to be the hosting city for the tour kick-off that will take place on June 22nd in at the Patriot Center with none other than Shaila Durcal as the opening act. Viva Entertainment/CMN/Agave Promotions is the organization behind DEJANDO HUELLA, and they are making the tour one of the most exciting event in years. Aguilar and Sebastian are two very successful performers and songwriters that play some of the most exciting and important music in the world. It is a testament to the enduring importance and increasing popularity of Mexican music, and a fan’s musical dream come true.
Joan Sebastian is a multi-Latin Grammy award winner and a top-grossing live performer. He is the kind of artist that writes songs to inspire his public, and his work is still one of his passions in life. Known as both “The People’s Poet” and “The King of Jaripeo,” ( Jaripeo is a form of bull riding) the singer and songwriter has been writing and arranging songs since he was a teenager, and has racked up hits dating back to the 1970s to the present. Sebastian is one of Mexico’s top-grossing acts, regularly selling out venues on both sides of the border. As a songwriter, he has worked with such giants in the Mexican music scene as Alejandro Fernandez, Rocio Durcal, Luis Miguel, Vicente Fernández, and more. He has more than a few awards under his belt, including multiple gold and platinum records and the ASCAP Silver Pen award. Pepe Aguilar is known for his exceptional voice, so much so that many call him simply, “The Voice”. With more than 12 million records sold, 23 albums, and 7 Grammy’s, he is not only a respected composer and producer, but also a multi-platinum singer and songwriter that has an impressive skill to inspire audiences with his sheer talent. He has also worked with some of the biggest names in Latin music, such as Lupita D’Alessio, Edith Márquez, Guadalupe Pineda, Julieta Venegas, and Ely Guerra. However, his biggest influence and support came from his famous
parents, singer and icon Antonio Aguilar and actress and ranchera singer Flor Silvestre, who handed him a microphone at the age of three during a concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Pepe Aguilar never put the microphone down and last summer it paid off when he was selected to receive his star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The concert is a match made in heaven, not only because the two artists have been important figures in each other’s lives, ( Joan Sebastian was Pepe Aguilar’s first producer for his 1992 Mariachi album, “Recuerdame Bonito”, and has also composed many of his songs since). In a recent interview, Pepe Aguilar was asked what fans could expect from this DEJANDO HUELLA... Mariza. When asked about what he thought were the origins of Flamenco Javier expressed his philosophy that “Music is universal with infinitesimal details and indescribable hues. There are secrets on all sides.” Though raised in Spain, Javier is a global citizen, having studied in New York City and traveled extensively. This international vibe has made Javier a master of mixing Flamenco with Latin music, jazz, and exploring the secrets of its origins through Indian and Middle Eastern rhythms.
Acclaimed composer and producer Javier Limón brings his rich experience into directing The Flamenco Soul Project. The group will present music from the Flamenco Soul album they recorded in collaboration with the Berklee College of Music in Boston this past November Javier has composed for such renown artists as Paco De Lucia, Bebo Valdés and El Cigala (on their famous Lagrimas Negras), and Concha Buika. His last solo album, Mujeres de Agua, brought together some of the best female voices from around the globe from Buika to Portuguese fado singer
The moves are brought by dancer Nino de los Reyes. This man’s feet are on fire; his moves are graceful and rapid. The son of renowned choreographers and dancers, Nino began dancing as a young child. He studied Flamenco at the Amor De Dios School in Madrid with such masters of the craft as Antonio Reyes and Josele Heredia. As if predicting his future success, Nino was cast at age 7 as a young Joaquín Cortes, one of the best know Flamenco dancers in the world. Now considered a rhythmic virtuoso, Nino dazzles as the main dancer in the show. The rest of this all-star ensemble consists of its musicians. Beautiful leading lady, Ariadna Castellanos is a young piano prodigy. She is the first Spanish musician to achieve the prestigious Presidential Scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Besides leading the tribute to Paco de Lucia in 2010, Ariadna toured the US with her Middle Eastern Quintet, and has collaborated with the likes of Alejandro Sanz. Her Piano Flamenco is a must listen. On the drums is Jose Antonio Alvarez Montana, a Spaniard through and through, José Antonio studied at the most traditional Flamenco schools in Spain. His eclectic nature however led him to study in Cuba under Chucho Valdez and the percussionists of the band Yoruba. This has tinged his sound with that Latino sazón.
Latino musicians add a special flavor to The Flamenco Soul Project. Puerto Rican native Jereme De Jesus is the show’s flute player. Jeremy is finishing his last semester at the Berklee College of Music and has collaborated with artists such as Jerry Rivera, Victor Mendoza, and Chucho Valdez. Alongside Jeremy is the Mexican percussionist Jose Andres Marquez whose talents also brought him to the Berklee College. As a testament to the far reaching influence of flamenco, the show’s acoustic bass player is Tamir Shmerling who hails from Tel Aviv, Israel. The show itself will follow a timeline path, starting with the origins of flamenco and ending with the fusions that characterize its future. As one of Spain’s most important cultural legacies, Flamenco forms an integral part of our Latino heritage. Her origins tell us a lot about how her flavorful voice came to be. Born from African immigrant parents from Equatorial Guinea in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, María Concepción Balboa Buika found her identity not only in the poor neighborhood where theirs was the only black family in town, but also in her gypsy neighbors, Spanish copla, and her mother’s affinity for jazz music. The rise of Buika (pronounced “BWEE-kah”) as one of today’s best exponents of contemporary Spanish music was a rather bumpy one. Starting out singing in local pubs and bars around Mallorca after a revelatory trip to London, Buika starts collaboration with other local and American artists, and dabbles into European house music. Then in 2000, in a strange turn of events and after recording her first album, Mestizüo, she ends up in the United States working as a Tina Turner impersonator in places like the

rushing with the likes of Nelly Furtado and Latin virtuoso Chucho Valdes, the artist know as Buika (or sometimes Concha Buika), expels all expectations of a typical flamenco singer. Her raw, cavernous, and exotic voice echoes her cosmopolitan make-up and emits a sound that is unlike any other modern singer. Coming to the Howard Theater this month, Buika brings a soulful repertoire of songs and an energetic performance that will have you enthralled for the shows entirety.
Luxor, Gold Coast, and Harra’s in Las Vegas and is invited by Rachelle Ferrell to act at Club Blue Note. It is not until 2006, under the production of Javier Limon, that Buika finds mainstream success with her album Mi Niña Lola. The title song rose to popularity and sales, giving Buika recognition and credibility among critics, subsequently bestowing her with several awards, including Best Album and Best Production honors at the Spanish Music Awards. Her next project, Niña de Fuego in 2008, produced and arranged by Javier Limón, gained her even more fanfare internationally and established her as one of the most exciting voices in modern Latin music. Her latest release, 2009’s El Ultimo Trago, found Buika collaborating with none other than Chucho Valdes,
legendary Cuban pianist. His subtle accompaniment blends well to reign back Buika’s emotive singing style in this partial tribute to one of Mexico’s great and iconic voices, Chavela Vargas. Her reinterpretations of Chavela’s most famous and distinctive songs, like “Luz de Luna,” “Sombras,” and “Las Cuidades,” are a clear indication of Buika’s amazing talent to not only reinterpret, but to make songs her own with her poignant and exotic style. Nominated for two Latin Grammys for Recording of the Year (for the song “Se Me Hizo Facil”) and Best Traditional Tropical Album, El Ultimo Trago is an unmistakable sign of her tremendous talent and virtuosity.
Buika has been touring around the world supporting this album but has also been keeping busy with other projects. Two of her latest collaborations include a duet with Seal called “You Get Me,” and taping her screen debut for Pedro Almodóvar’s film, La Piel Que Habito. Buika will bring her unique blend of flamenco, jazz, soul and blues to the area at the Howard Theater on June 22nd. █

ohnny Rivera was born in New York on February 4th in the South Bronx. He is one of the most remarkable salsa singers of the romance era and a proud Nuyorican. Growing up in the Bronx in the 1960’s put him in the perfect place to develop an ear for Latin music, especially Salsa and Merengue, due to the strong Puerto Rican and Dominican presence throughout the city. He attended Benjamin Franklin High School. After graduating, he moved briefly to Puerto Rico, most known as “La Isla del Encanto,” where he fell in love with salsa. Soon after relocating, he joined a local salsa group while, at the same time, drawing inspiration from his uncle, Adalberto Santiago, who encouraged him to continue his education. Johnny returned to New York where he attended Johnny Colon’s workshop at the East Harlem Music School. He continued to develop his voice and technique until joining his uncle Adalberto Santiago y La Orchesta. After being part of the band, he compiled his first album “Noche Caliente, Vol II”. While still honing his skills, he was given the opportunity to record with several Latin bands and eventually, he was given the opportunity to join “Grupo Fascinacion” where he spent four years, recording new albums like “Tiburon” (Grupo Fasinacion, Rico Records) and “Salsa Vice” (Grupo Fasinacion, Rico Records). He also recorded two albums with “Conjunto Clasico” as the group’s featured singer. Between 1988 and 1989, he recorded “Clasico 88” (Conjunto Clasico, Lo Mejor Records) and 1989 his last record with Conjuncto Clasico, “Mas Clasico Que Nunca.” It was in 1991 that Johnny finally recorded his first solo album, “Ahora de Verdad” with producer Sergio George, while traveling between New York and Puerto Rico. His popularity rose enormously when he sang a duet with Ray Sepulveda at two Combinacion Perfecta concerts at the Madison Square Garden. The song “No Vale La Pena” elevated his career to a new level when it made the Billboard music charts. Since then, he has scored 15 hit singles, including Billboard #1 single, “Se Parecia Tanto
a Ti.” In 1995 he performed for a recordbreaking 300,000 attendees during his Columbian tour stops in Bogota, Medellin, Cali, and Barranquilla. Johnny has participated in countless Latin Festivals and is also involved with numerous charities such as the Teleton Projecto 911 in Panama. He’s also recorded with La Nueva Combinacion and once again joined forces with Ray Sepulveda for a duet in tribute to El Gran Combo with the song “Son Para Ustedes” composed by Charlie Donato in 2006. Between the many successes, Johnny has also seen his share of sadness. In 2006, his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, after which Johnny halted his career to stay and support his wife throughout her treatment. He did what he felt was right, putting family first. Decisions such as this have greatly added to Johnny’s image as not only an idol but also a remarkable human being. In 2007, after his wife’s recovery, he returned to the stage with his ninth solo album “Vivo Por Ti.” His latest full-length release album, “El Noble de la Salsa”, was released in 2011 and is available from Universal Music Group. Johnny Rivera will perform in the DC Area at V3 Lounge in Falls Church VA on June 22nd. Johnny’s work has always been at the forefront of Latin music and is certain to continue inspiring listeners young and old for generations to come. THE FIRST LADY OF HIP-HOP

hen it comes to the vibrant Latin alternative hip-hop scene, Washington, DC has not had much luck in booking these incredibly popular acts to grace us with their presence. However, that will change soon, because this year we are getting a special show that will change DC’s affair with the Latin alternative hip-hop scene: La Mala Rodriguez will finally be performing in our area on June 28th, at the State Theatre in Falls Church, VA. María Rodríguez, also known as La Mala or Mala Rodríguez, is a Latin Grammy Award-Winning rapper that has gone from being just a super skilled MC to an eye popping Diva. Born in Cádiz but raised in Sevilla, Spain, this diva is ready to come into our area and give us a live performance that will demonstrate just how interesting, versatile, and explosive the Latin alternative hip-hop scene really is. It’s a well-known fact that the hip-hop culture has established roots in every single corner of our planet and Spain is not an exception. In my opinion, the mixture of cultures in that country has contributed to a full development of very interesting sounds and flavors that can easily be found in places like Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid or Sevilla. In La Mala’s case, she has gone from giving us the classic hip-hop mixes of beats and rhymes, to a fusion that has gone from Flamenco rap to club dance beats and has gotten the attention of critics that easily placed her into a more open music market, the world music one. La Mala first broke into the market with her debut album, Lujo Iberico in 2000, and quickly became a popular name in the scene that was clearly male-dominated. It was interesting to hear everybody talking about the female rapper that had that “flamenco touch”. I remember waiting for her performance at the third LAMC in 2002 and just listening to other artists like Blanquito Man of King Chango, or Fermin IV of Control Machete, saying how her show was going to be the highlight of that evening; of course they were not wrong. My first impression was a rapper that was influenced by the classic hip-hop genre with lyrics that talked about urban life’s most common woes. Even her set up on stage was not that particularly interesting, but something was different, and it only took a couple of seconds of her first single, “Tengo un trato”, to get everybody’s attention and to confirm what Blanquito Man and Fermin were talking about. Then came Alevosía, Mala’s second album, and with it she gained even more international success even when the controversial music video from the single “La Niña” was banned from some TV stations due to its depiction of a young female drug dealer.
By 2007, Mala Rodriguez released Malamarismo, her third album and featured the most successful and important singles of her young career, “Nanai” and “Por La Noche”. In this album, she experimented with changes that not all her hard-core fans were happy about, they were not pleased with the musical fusions she was introducing and even the change on her looks became a target of the Latin hip pop purists. However, the changes paid off as she got the attention of many others that would bring her to take important steps in her musical career. Since then she has released another album and has collaborated with many artists and producers on projects that influenced her into a more diverse variety of styles when it comes to recording new material. Some names include people like Jota Mayúscula, Akon, Vico C, Kultama, Antonio Carmona, Calle 13, Tego Calderón, Julieta Venegas, Bajofondo Tango Club, and recently Kinky. ow did a joyously vulgar, hedonism-reveling, sprawling group of jokers who formed together to play parties and school dances become an immensely popular and beloved Latin American rock act capable of massive, anthems and international hits (“La Guitarra”, “Somos”) as well as tender, affecting romantic ballads (“Loco (Tu Forma De Ser)”, “Corazon”)? From relatively un-ambitious origins, Los Autenticos Decadentes have gone on to great success and popularity in Mexico (playing in the Palacio de los Deportes and the Teatro Metropolitano in 2006 and 2007 respectively), released nine studio albums, had their songs sung and adopted by the rowdy “hinchadas” of soccer clubs across Latin America, and played in Luna Park in Buenos Aires not once but twice (in 2007 and 2012 to celebrate 20 and 25 years as a band). >>>>>>

They have also released a live DVD titled Somos, released three live albums, put together three greatest hit compilations (with a fourth possibly on the way), and have worked with popular and renowned artists such as Fidel Nadal, Babasonicos frontman Adrian Dargelos and Javier Herlein of Catupecu Machu. Los Autenticos Decadentes have shared a stage with Attaque 77, La Mona Jimenez, Kapanga, and Andres Calamaro, among others. Their mixture of ska and rock (and many other genres such as cumbia, bolero, and even murga!) has led to praise and recognition from luminaries Luca Prodan, David Byrne of the Talking Heads and world music figure Manu Chao. Much like a less political, but more decadent P-Funk or Sun Ra, Los Autenticos Decadentes are known for their high energy, outlandish and extravagant live performances (and larger than life personalities and nicknames) which include costumes, crowd interaction, and an overall party atmosphere. The band formed together with vocalist Gustavo “Cucho” Parisi, guitarists Jorge “Perro Viejo” Serrano, Gustavo “Nito” Montecchia, and Diego “Cebolla” Demarco, bassist Pablo “Chevy” Armesto, percussionists Gastón “Frances” Bernardou, Martin “La Mosca” Lorenzo, and Eduardo Trípodi, saxophonist Pablo Cabanchiek (no longer with the band), trombonist Daniel “Ternura” Zimbello, trumpet player Guillermo “Capanga” Eijo, and drummer Martin Pajarola (no longer with the band) recording the first Los Autenticos Decadentes studio album in 1989. 1995’s Mi Vida Loca, brought the group massive success across Latin America and as far and wide as the United States

and Europe. Mi Vida Loca spawned such hits as the slacker anthem “La Guitarra”, the murga borrowing genre-crosser “El Murguero (Tu-Ta TuTa)” and the great romantic ballad “Corazon”. The band also hit it big with the tracks, “El Pajaro Vio El Cielo y Se Volo” and “Diosa”.

The band’s famous song, La Guitarra from the Mi Vida Loca record, united Los Autenticos Decadentes fun-loving style with a rowdy video and an anthemic theme.
Most recently, Los Autenticos Decadentes have released 2010’s Irrompibles (Unbreakables) echoing the band’s remarkable longevity and continued popular and critical success. Irrompibles sees Los Autenticos Decadentes employing a more modern and current sound. As with most of the band’s albums, the musical variety in the album is vast, with disco, reggae, ranchera, Carribean and cuarteto sounds being evident throughout the record.
Likely their biggest hit (so far), and one of their greatest songs, La Guitarra exemplifies Los Autenticos Decadentes’ musical style and manifesto. A humorous but certainly rousing tune, La Guitarra glorifies the experience of the son/daughter who has stayed in the house too long. Slight but charming, the chorus “Por que yo no quiero trabajar/ No quiero ir a estudiar/ No me quiero casar/ Quiero tocar la guitarra

k America, I think you’re ready for this. There was a time when cheap beer and head-ache grade liquor ruled the land, but America’s taste has graduated to the finer things in life when it comes to the brewing and distilling world. So what is the newest finest product? I recently attended a tasting at Zengo in Chinatown, you might think I’m going to be talking about a new whisky or a newly flavored vodka, but no, I’m talking about FIO. FIO is not rum and it’s not tequila: FIO is pisco! In case you’re not familiar, pisco is a grape-based brandy that originated in the port of Pisco in Peru. hen you think about Peru what is the first thing that comes to mind? I am willing to bet that it is the image of the famous and impressive archeological ruins at Machu Picchu. The gorgeous view with the Huaina Picchu standing tall behind the Inca site that kisses the clouds and that has made my country a destination for millions of people around the world. I have only been to Machu Picchu once and it was a remarkable and unforgettable experience. Truly the kind of place that takes your breath away.
But as striking and imposing as the city of the Incas is, it is not the only thing Peru has to offer. Not only is Peru a country that counts with millennia of History, being home to ancient civilizations contemporary to the Egyptians and Mesopotamians, but it’s also a country with a culture that has been influenced by so many different races, inheriting customs from the natives, the Spaniards, the Africans, Asians and many other Europeans that migrated to this beautiful nation who welcomed all. A country with such a diverse geography and landscape that provide it with such a rich flora and fauna that new species are constantly being discovered. A country that’s full of
creativity, where artists, musicians and artisans are born in almost every household. A nation with a cuisine that speaks so loudly of our traditions and our idiosyncrasy, in such a tasteful way, that the rest of the world can no longer ignore it. The Capital of Peru, Lima is a mixture of old and new that reminisces of the colonial days and that welcomes the contemporary with open arms. A multicultural center where every corner of the old city takes you on a romantic trip to the past, where liberty was a new thing and our Criollismo was just being born. The new city offers you a glimpse of the future with the promise that the best is yet to come.

...as striking and imposing as the city of the Incas is, it is not the only thing Peru has to offer.
Countless beaches make Peru a popular destination for surfers around the world, with perfect waves that give them the chance to ride side to side with dolphins and a sunset that I have yet to see anywhere else. Chicama, a beach at the north of Trujillo, provides them with the challenge of riding the longest wave in the world while and at the same time sharing the surf with local fishermen in their traditional Caballitos de Totora. The impressive Andes are a geographical monument so elegant that the Incas chose them to establish one of the most powerful civilizations of ancient South America. With a mixture of snow and jungle the terrain is rich and full of life, making a hike through its magnificent mountains a must for all outdoors lovers. The imposing condor soars over the many colorful Andean towns, which, although founded by the Spaniards, are inhabited by local people who still maintain their ancestral traditions. Peru is also the birth place of the Amazon River. The Peruvian Jungle is one of the most bio diverse places on the planet, with thousands of exotic species of birds, mammals, fish, flowers and fruits that are still being discovered and studied. Remote tribes still inhabit along the shores of the river, as if time and evolution never affected them. Although a source for foreign oil companies, the Peruvian Amazon

still house territories that remain untouched by the modern man and that are a perfect destination for the truly adventurous. When I am asked by my friends to describe Peru I almost always leave these facts for last. I try to describe it to them in a more personal way and so the first thing that comes to mind is, inevitably, our way of living. I start remembering family gatherings where the food played a role almost as important as the guests. The Pisco and the cajon where always present alongside a fresh ceviche and almost always some kind of dance. Always present as well were the many conversations about how it used to be and how it is now, about the old and the new, and never really concluding in anything that hadn’t been figured out already. I tell them all about the places I’ve seen but mostly I tell them about the many others I have yet to see. The list is long, but not impossible. The intriguing Nazca lines are a site that can only be seen from a plane. The beautiful seascapes in Paracas, where one coexists with the hundreds of sea lions that have claimed the beaches as their own. The enchanted White City, Arequipa, that sits at the skirts of the majestic Misti volcano, or the peaceful Lake Titicaca where, as the legend tells, Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo where born, and with them the Inca empire.
It would be impossible for me to mention each city and town, each national park, lake or mountain in a 2 page article. How does one do justice to each archeological site, each artist or each folkloric dance? The Peruvian territory is so vast and wide ranged that 1000 words aren’t enough to describe it. I can only try to gather a small collection of facts and memories that will hopefully speak to you the same way they do to me. So with all these attributes to consider how can one pin point the one single aspect that makes Peru so unique? What is precisely what makes Peru a truly extraordinary place to visit, live, and experience? The answer is quite simple: Peru has an everlasting spirit that transcends eras. █

“I hate my boss! I hate my job! I hate where I’m at in life! I want to open my own business and do what I want.” I hear this day in and day out from so many people I meet through my travels in life. The complaints carry on and their words echo through my ears like a broken record. One unhappy position in their lives leads to another. At the end of the day, they are all, simply put, unhappy individuals who are lost with no sense of direction on how to live and love life. Seconds lead to minutes, to hours, to days, to weeks, to years. Before you know it, you look back and realize years have passed in the blink of an eye. Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jenny Osoria. Jenny is an absolute fitness guru with a deep passion for life. Beyond her fitness abilities, she shines as an amazing role model for men, women, and children of every generation and region of the world on how to grab life with both hands and take full advantage of the millions of possibilities there are for everyone to achieve happiness. Born in the Dominican Republic and raised here in the United States, Jenny has been in the fitness industry for 11 years. She started out working the front desk at a fitness center. Since then, she has owned her own business for eight years, however, her career wasn’t something that just fell into her lap. She recollected that she has always been active and said (in reference to fitness), “It’s natural, it’s what I breathe.” She was published in the Washington Post at a young age for her fitness accomplishments. Currently, she is a fitness instructor, dancer, and holds the state title of Miss Virginia- Belleza Latina Internacional 2012-13. In July, she will head to Orlando, Florida for another competition. When asked where her inspiration and drive comes from to help so many people, she said it’s “the interaction with the people.” The positive reinforcement she gains from her clients gives her a physical and mental high. For Jenny, her joy comes from serving people, seeing their physical and mental successes, and knowing that she was a part of making their lives better. “People die to make money … then they have to use that money because they are dying. Don’t make money to die, make it to live. You have to live now! It’s about you walking the trail and what you have to do to get to that goal … Nothing is impossible. If you fall down, get up! If you fall down again and hurt your knee very badly, put ice on it and get back up! No one is going to do it for you!” Jenny’s energy doesn’t just stop with her career; Jenny is also a supporter of Los Hijos de Maria in the DMV. This is a non-profit that supports young
girls in pageants here. She helps them learn to dance, walk, and speak; all that goes into winning a pageant. All of the proceeds from the pageants go towards helping those in the Dominican Republic, ranging from school supplies to blankets to other basic necessities of life. This year, she is going to her home country to hand deliver the items to those in need. As a token of advice, she offers the world a suggestion on achieving the same satisfaction from life and a career in general: “It has to be a love for what you do.” Looking back, she wanted to thank those greatest inspirations in her life which have helped her become who she is today. First, to her mother, Francisca Almonte, “who has made me this strong.” Then, to Leo Gunawan, who “captures my beautiful images,” followed by her recognition of Juliza Encarnacion, who is “my coach who guides me in my organization and pageants.”, thanks to Abema Music, “one of my sponsors.”, “,all my students and clients who trust their life to me”, Lastly C.
