Life, death, romance, family, the streets, and violence are all themes simultaneously touched upon in Cosculluela’s music. His apodo “El Principe” has been revealed as coming from “El Principe del Verso”. The lyrics to “Pienso En Ti” featuring De La Ghetto are romantic and somewhat Shakespearean in the sense that they are poetic. A man wonders aloud what his ex-girlfriend has been up to, and in the mirror rehearses the words he’d say to get her to take him back. The song reflects the feelings of practically anyone who has ever had to deal with a break-up.

The Rottweilers Inc. label website elaborates upon their relationship as colleagues where Mueka states, “Cosculluela’s mind runs 7 years ahead of the rest of the genre, because of this, he always has the most original lyrics.” Mueka goes on to state that, “Cosculluela hasn’t reached his peak and I believe he never will, simply because he always finds a way to become better.” In order to more

intimately interact with fans Cosculluela has participated in Twitcam and Google Hangout, one session in which I had the pleasure of accidentally attending. Some Cosculluela fans are so dedicated that one even got a tattoo of the Rottweilers logo on his back which is proudly displayed in a YouTube video. In the nascent stages of his career, Cosculluela was heard on Don Omar’s first album featuring various artists titled Los Bandoleros on the song “Vamos A Darle”, and then on well-known reggaetón producer Buddha’s release Buddha’s Family 2 “Te Va A Ir Mal” (2005) and on Daddy Yankee’s “Somos de Calle Remix” (2008) and “Entre El Bien y El Mal” on Hector El Father’s El Juicio Final. His much anticipated album El Principe was released in 2009 and was highly successful. His other albums include: El Principe: Ghost Edition (2010), El Niño (2011) and War Kingz (2012) which reached Billboard’s Top Ten on the Latin Rhythm charts. He has worked with other big names in the genre such as Wisin y Yandel, Ivy Queen, De La Ghetto, Alexis y Fido, Farruko, J Balvin, Dalmata & Ñejo, Farruko, and Ñengo Flow.

Some songs that true fans might consider favorites are: “Cuidau Au Au”, “Plaka Plaka”, “Na Na Nau” and “Click Clack” (which was used for the movie “Kabo y Platon”). In addition to the album Teflon Face (2014), the latest buzz surrounding Cosculluela is a rumored beef with reggaetón contemporary, Tempo, which was aired publicly on a track called “Santa Cos” released in December 2013. El Principe is also said to have a beef with Daddy Yankee, therefore it has been suspected that DY’s “Soldados” indirectly dedicates lines to Cosculluela. In the end, who can really confirm these allegations? I’d say, let’s keep the peace and let the music speak for itself. MANY PEOPLE MAY HAVE HEARD OF RADIO FUTURA, AFTER ALL THEY WERE AN EXTREMELY INFLUENTIAL SPANISH POP-ROCK BAND IN THE 80S, HOWEVER, YOU MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH RADIO FUTURA’S LEADING FRONT MAN SANTIAGO AUSERÓN, BETTER KNOWN AS JUAN PERRO. FEW ARTISTS IN THE SPANISH ROCK ARENA TRULY DESERVE THE TITLE OF LIVING LEGEND. HOWEVER, THE FORMER LEADER OF ONE OF SPAIN’S GREATEST ROCK BANDS OF ALL TIME, RADIO FUTURA, JUAN PERRO IS WIDELY REGARDED AS A GENRE PIONEER, ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC. Radio Futura (which translates to Future Radio), was a launching pad for Juan Perro who took over as frontman in 1981. The band delivered La Canción de Juan Perro, released in May 1987. The record aimed to get closer to the traditional sources of Spanish popular music, the hiring of a horns section (The Uptown Horns) for the recording sessions being probably the most clear statement of the new musical direction taken. The record had a good response and became their biggest seller to date.

Juan Perro didn’t leave his rockero background behind however, in 2006, he joined forces with his brother Luis (also ex-Radio Futura) to record an album of rock and soul ballads titled “Las Malas Lenguas”. This album spurred a tour and received critical acclaim. Throughout his extensive career, Juan Perro has collaborated with many world-class musicians like Cuba’s Compay Segundo (Buena Vista Social Club) and Spain’s flamenco legends Kiko Veneno and Raimundo Amador.

You may think this is a harsh change from Spanish rock, however, Juan Perro had been researching the roots of “son cubano,” since 1984 and produced a five-album compilation of Cuban traditional music called Semilla del Son (1991-1992) prior to his solo launch. With a background as a philosophy student, and a side career as a music history writer, curator and scholar, Juan Perro is no stranger to exploring rich musical traditions. He digs deep into those roots in search of connections and reinvigorates them in his respectful while innovative interpretations, adding his own flavor and personality to the mix.

Ariel Puchetta, Sergio Aranda and Maury Juarez, formed an integral part of what’s called the tropical movement in Argentina. They led the popular band Rafaga and produced a number of hits with them. Ariel, easily recognizable by his sizable hair, was the voice of most of Rafaga’s hits. Sergio, the hypeman, was on the keyboards, and Maury composed most of their songs and musical arrangements. With Rafaga they won five Premios Gardel, Argentina’s most important musical award. They performed at the famed Viña del Mar festival in Chile. The “Rafagamania” then spread to Chile, where they achieved

Gold and Platinum Record distinctions. However, Rafaga really made their mark in the party scene. Clubs in South America, the States and Spain kept Rafaga songs on heavy rotation for quite a few years. Songs like “Mentirosa”, “Luna”, “Rafaga de Amor” and “Maldito Corazon”, became Latin club anthems. Just have a listen to those songs and I’m sure the party memories will come flooding back. Ariel Puchetta eventually left the group to perform on his own. Even though he had some good experiences on his own, he never really became comfortable as a solo act. When the chance to work with Sergio Aranda and Maury Juarez opened up again, he didn’t think twice. They built upon their already existing musical chemistry and put it to good use by forming the new group, La Otra Dimension. La Otra Dimension or LOD for short, is an interesting proposition. They mix those

nostalgic voices Ariel was known for in Rafaga, the classic cumbia beat mixed with some modern sounding arrangements, to produce another dimension of sound. If you mix Latin ballads, traditional cumbia and some fresh reggaeton, you would get something like LOD. Their first album release was titled, “Todo lo que Quiero” and did add a new dimension to the exRafaga sound. Now on their second album release “M.A.S”, LOD are not following that exact composition but the basic proposition is a switch from cumbia, to reggaeton, and even incorporating some salsa arrangements. La Otra Dimension does very well with borrowing from various styles and genres to create catchy and danceable rhythms. Maury’s touch is evident in that regard. Besides their new original material, as La Otra Dimension, they have also produced some intriguing covers of popular hits. Their

performances include some covers of songs like “Mientes” by Camila and the mega-hit by Luis Enrique, “Yo No Se Mañana”. If you are a fan of this style of Argentine cumbia, you will definitely enjoy what La Otra Dimension has to offer. Ariel, Sergio and Maury, with solid decade of combined experienced under their belt and with some adventurous ideas for the band’s future, are moving forward with their project. Paquito Guzman Salsa Puertorriqueña a Ritmo de

FRANCISCO GUZMAN GEIGEL, BETTER KNOWN BY HIS STAGE NAME, PAQUITO GUZMAN, WAS BORN IN SANTURCE, PUERTO RICO ON NOVEMBER 20, 1939. AS A YOUNG BOY, PAQUITO DISCOVERED HIS LOVE FOR MUSIC AND FOUND HIMSELF PARTICULARLY STUNNED BY THE SOUNDS OF BOLERO, A SLOW PACED ST YLE OF MUSIC WITH ORIGINS FROM SPAIN AND CUBA. Guzman soon became a fan of Cheito Gonzalez, a famous Puerto Rican guitarist and singer. He also fell in love with the music of Rafael Cortijo y Su Combo and Son Montuno, a type of salsa mixed with bolero, mambo, and guaracha. This love for music eventually led Guzman to performing and when he only 18 years old, he was given the opportunity to perform on a television show called “La Piña de Los Teenagers.” Just one year later, he was asked to give another live performance on the television show “Teenagers Parade.” These experiences gave Guzman a time in the spotlight and jumpstarted his career in the world of music.

At the age of 20, Guzman moved from Santurce to New York City where he resided with relatives in the Bronx. Shortly after arriving in the United States, Guzman met a Puerto Rican businessman named Johnny Montanez who happened to own a record store. It was Montanez who suggested Guzman should produce a record and then have it put up for sale in his store. Guzman took Montanez’s idea seriously and soon formed his own band called Los Originales, or the Originals. The group produced two singles called “Yolanda” and “Mi Martirio” in 1960, two songs which would become their most well known hits. Guzman then joined forces with a fellow Caribbean artist named Joe Quijano and together, the duo released five albums in the span of one year. After establishing a name for himself in New York City, Guzman decided it was time to do the same in Puerto Rico and he returned to his hometown in the mid-1960s. Back in Puerto Rico, Guzman met another musician named Tommy Olivencia who needed a new singer for his band. Guzman agreed to join and together, Olivencia and Guzman recorded an album titled Trucutu. Guzman remained alongside the band of Tommy Olivencia until the end of the 1960s. In the 1970s, Guzman chose to pursue a solo career and he released his first album Paquito Guzman in 1972. The rest is history, since starting his solo career, Guzman has produced a total of 16

albums and continues to perform today. Guzman is currently on tour with salsa musicians Hildemaro and Roberto Blades. Blades, a musician from Panama, is known for his songs “Ya No Regreso Contigo” (I’m Not Getting Back Together With You), “Lagrimas” (Tears), “El Artista Famoso” (The Famous Artist), and “Si Estuvieras Conmigo” (If You Were With Me). Guzman, Hildemaro, and Blades will be performing together for a special Valentine’s day concert on Friday, February 14, 2014 at The Palace. It quickly became one of my favorites. It’s now my ringtone and also my alarm to wake up in the morning. The song is basically a proposition for a girl to dump her boyfriend for “El Principe” because that guy is a chump and “Él no va a hacer na”. Cosculluela can be her principe azul. Cosculluela’s full name is Jose Fernando Cosculluela Suarez and he was born on October 15, 1980. According to some sources, he played tennis in high school and enjoyed surfing and golf while growing up in a gated community in Humacao, Puerto Rico. He was born to a Cuban father and Puerto Rican mother. Reportedly at the age of 12 he began to admire Vico C and other reggaetón and rap stars of the time and decided early on to pursue a career in music. He and his brother, Jaime sold underground mixtapes, and he came to be guided by Buddha and was later introduced to Mueka, who has since become a big name producer in the genre and with whom he has continued to work. hat’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear flamenco? Warm. Soothing. Sunny. However, this month, forget everything you think you may know about this famous dance, as the National Flamenco star Eva Yerbabuena brings her famed speed, power, and dramatic footwork to a flamenco show inspired by poetry to our nation’s capitol. World-renowned artist Eva Yerbabuena presents “Lluvia” (Rain) at George Washington University Lisner Auditorium on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 8 p.m. Born in Frankfurt, Germany but raised in Spain, this self-taught dancer began to develop her role as a choreographer at a very young age. She predicts that some people who believe they know her will feel a little uncomfortable with her new show, “Lluvia,”which Eva believes reflects who really she is, her essence. In a statement she stated, “This work is a tribute to melancholy and coldness, to being alive, to the endlessness of life.” Accompanied by four dancers and her critically acclaimed ensemble of musicians, she delivers an unforgettable tour de force performance, which has left Spanish audiences in raptures. Although flamenco is popularly viewed as a warm journey through dance, Eva’s performance will be different and unique. The first half of Rain comes from a gray day of pure melancholy. Eva wants to explore her beginnings, perhaps a bit unsettling (because it is very easy to define the person in front of the audience) to all those who believe. Her origins are love in

the purest solitude, which means they do not believe in the wonderful love, but one that makes you see parts of your essence you never knew existed, parts of your essence you know through the pain caused by this form of purity we call heartbreak (melancholy). However, the second half of the show makes a dramatic change back to the remarkable positive world of flamenco, but still presented in a way only Eva can perform. Combining her personal reflection on life and this artistic dance expression is a truly remarkable event you do not want to miss. Eva began her journey through flamenco more than 15 years ago and has inspired herself and others throughout her magical journey. She has won every major Spanish choreographic award while at the same time revitalizing traditional flamenco with new dramatic structures while maintaining the authenticity of the art form. In 2013, Eva was nominated for Best Dance Female Performer by the Critics Circle UK. This was the first time a flamenco dancer had been selected among the best performers in the world. Eva has performed all over the world including New York City, London, and Madrid and has appeared in various international films. “Lluvia” is a part of the National Flamenco Festival 2014 which kicks off on March 4th with an opening Gala at the Lisner Auditorium, and features four headline events, over sixty artists, and educational programming. DOMINICAN VOCALIST, EL NEGRO 5 ESTRELLAS, IS ONE OF THE NEWEST FACES ON THE URBAN MERENGUE SCENE.

Born Luis González, on June 6th, 1987 in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, El Negro 5 Estrellas has a unique style and sound, one which fuses merengue, mambo, and Dominican street music together, as exemplified in his hit song, “Plomo Plomo”. The song was first made famous when it was played during Santiago’s basketball game celebration, where fans from opposing teams used it when winning the game, as if to say they were giving “plomo” to their opponents. The song, played throughout the games, mainly at each change, quickly became a hit in Santiago de los Caballeros, and throughout the Dominican Republic. In addition to, “Plomo Plomo”, El Negro 5 Estrellas is also known for songs such as “María va a la Disco”, “La Vieja”, and “Juan Catali”.

El Negro 5 Estrellas, is proud of his successes and confesses he himself was surprised at his newfound stardom, however, he is more than satisfied with the work he has done in his music career thus far. The self-proclaimed, “Mambero Dominicano” named his second studio album, “031 La Serie de Santiago de Los Caballeros” in a sign of gratitude and paying homage to the “town that gave birth to us”. His dedication has led him to have a full work schedule each week, and he looks forward to staying even busier with future projects. ingling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey has been considered “the greatest show on earth” since their merge in 1919. Prior to the circuses merging, the Ringling Brothers Circus and Barnum and Bailey Circus were two separate companies but then joined together to create the ultimate circus experience for audiences all over the United States and in Mexico. Currently, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus is in its 143rd tour called “Built to Amaze.” The Built to Amaze experience brings surprise and wonder to delight audiences with over the top feats of strength, agility and courage. Circus performers from across the globe create the perfect blend of athleticism and bravery, where power

meets fearlessness and amazement has no bounds. Magnificent elephants, ferocious tigers, astonishing acrobats and aweinspiring aerialists are engineered into one spectacular performance. In addition to witnessing an engaging show, those who attend have the option to make their circus experiences even more unforgettable. The “All Access PreShow” gives audience members the option to go behind the scenes of the circus. Attendees have the opportunity to try on circus costumes, learn tricks, have a meet and greet with the performers, and take pictures with the clowns. There is also a chance to win a pachyderm painting which is trunk painted by a circus elephant right before the winner’s eyes. The “All Access Pre-Show” is one hour before the main performance begins and there is no additional charge since it is included in

the price of the admission ticket. Certain All Access Pre-Shows offer an Animal Open House, which is a chance to meet the elephants an hour and a half prior to the main show. However, the elephant meet and greet is not available for all performances, so it is recommended to check on the circus’s website if an “Animal Open House” is taking place. The Built to Amaze experience brings a modern flare of twists and turns where excitement and suspense are so intense you’ll be tempted to cover your eyes. atin and Asian foods are two of my favorite world cuisines, and I often find myself caught in a meal time conundrum of choosing between tacos or bulgogi, pupusas or samosas.

Tucked by the Chinatown Metro Station, Zengo’s trendy downstairs lounge was in full swing during my visit, while the upstairs dining area had more of a “zen” feel. The interior is both elegant and fun, with ultramodern and industrial influences balanced by earthy tones and soft lighting,

creating a warm and inviting space to enjoy a meal for any occasion. Zengo, the brainchild of Chef Owner Richard Sandoval, has four locations across the US. Each location features unique regional dishes, and all of the Zengo chefs join Sandoval on a quarterly basis for the Zengo Test Kitchen. In the TK chefs choose one Latin and one Asian country and collaborate on dishes for a menu showcasing the flavor and cooking techniques for each country. The current TK menu is Mexico-Japan, bringing both innovative and artful dishes. Chef de Cuisine Jason Streiff and the staff at the DC location have a shared desire to see their customers full, happy, and enjoying their dining experience. Zengo translates to “give and take” in Japanese and lives up to its name. It upholds salient values in Latin and Asian culture that turn a meal into much more than just food; it’s love, passion and a time for sharing. All around me were friends, families and

couples chatting and laughing as they passed plates around and sampled each other’s food. Zengo is also known for its cocktails and boasts the #1 voted mojito in DC, which I understood perfectly after taking the first sip of my cucumber mojito. If mojitos aren’t your poison, Zengo offers signature cocktails, wines, beers and a variety of sake, mezcal, and tequila. In true Zengo fashion, I began with some small plates and a ceviche tasting. The charred tuna wonton tacos are a light and perfect starter, with a great crunchy texture and a spicy sweetness with the mango salsa and pasilla chile. The duck confit-daikon tacos were one of my favorite plates and certainly worth coming back for. It’s a deconstructed taco with thin sliced daikon as the shell and topped with a curried apple and orange coriander sauce. This dish was light yet decadent, with the crispy and fatty duck confit mimicking chicharrones. Next was a ceviche tasting, which includes the bay scallop and fluke ceviches, with a coconut based fluke

ceviche served in half a coconut. Both were very different and delicious, perfectly highlighting the variety of flavor and techniques at the chef ’s disposal from such large regions. Zengo also offers a number of entrees, of which I sampled the miso glazed black cod and the Chinese braised beef short ribs. Both were hearty, complex in flavor and make for a satisfyingly unique dinner. For dessert I highly recommend the avocado panna cotta, topped with fruit salad and cookie crumble. If you love avocados and have never had them prepared as a dessert, this is a must to try and the perfect end to a great meal. Moisés Linares: Shares the Passion for Sports that Brought Him to DC By: Manu Mayor

CAN A PASSION FOR SPORTS TURN INTO A CAREER OUTSIDE OF THE FIELD? YOU BET. MOISÉS LINARES, OUR LOCAL SPORTS ANCHOR AT TELEMUNDO, DID JUST THAT. IN 2006, WHILE ATTENDING CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, MOISÉS ENTERED A CONTEST BY THE LOCAL UNIVISION AFFILIATE TO BE AN ONLINE REPORTER IN CHARGE OF TRANSMITTING HIS PASSION FOR THE WORLD CUP TO THE LOCAL AREA. His

sample article landed him among the three finalists. “I prepared very hard to make it, I gave it my all,” Moisés remembers. The three finalists were quizzed on their World Cup knowledge, Moisés was like a human sports almanac, and he had all the answers. His knowledge earned him the spot. For the duration of the World Cup, Moisés lived and breathed the sport; he would watch the games at local hangouts and conduct interviews with the fans. His hard work paid off and his reporting earned him a visit to the popular TV show, “Acción Deportiva”. Moisés kept his eye on the prize and gathered experience working as a production assistant for Fox Sports, was a columnist for Fox Deportes, was a contributing writer at Latino Sports 360 magazine, and served as a radio host with Skid Row Studios. He also found time to volunteer working with adults with developmental disabilities in California, and also maintained his own blog and wrote content for a social media fitness page. Talk about busy!

When asked what his favorite part about being a Sports Anchor is, Moises shared, “I get to do, what many people wish they could do. Be on the field. As close as possible to the action.” KH: What projects would you like to take on in the future? Moisés: I want to keep becoming a better anchor. I want to work in both, Spanish and English. I want to go to a World Cup and cover the event. KH: What’s your favorite sport to cover? Moisés: Soccer, but I like to keep it balanced. KH: Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Do you think it’s going to happen? Moisés: It may seem like it’s not, but when you really look at it, I do think it’s going to happen. It will happen after Pacquiao leaves Bob (Arum). He has one year left in his contract with his promoter, after that, I think they will make it happen before they retire. KH: Who is your pick for the World Cup? Moisés: I always pick Argentina, but they always lose! I’ve supported them since I was 5. I remember watching Maradona on TV in the 90 World Cup, watching the games, but they lost to Germany. With Messi around, their time is now. KH: I guess we know the answer to this question then, Messi or Ronaldo? Moisés: They are both great, not just because of the goals, but because of the consistency in their play. The bad thing for Ronaldo is playing in the same era as Messi. Same as Platini in the 80’s. He was one of the best, but Maradona was around.

KH: Any advice for someone looking to get into sports broadcasting or journalism? Moisés: It’s not easy. There are 40 to 50 guys waiting for one opening. I waited for years, did the magazine work...and I told myself “you can’t quit”. I had to move across the country to make this happen. My accomplishments wouldn’t be possible without the love and support of two important women, my grandmother and my mother. KH: How do you like living in the D.C. area? Moisés: The people are nice; they greet me and tell me they like my segment. That makes all the preparation worthwhile. It’s a cool city...except the winter. After years of hard work, preparation, and with a resolve not to quit, this California native is quickly making a name for himself in our community and has turned his passion into a successful career. Not an easy feat, now if only he could just get used to the cold winters... Whats your hometown? I was born and raised in Russia. I went to modeling school when I was thirteen. I moved to the US to go to college. I graduated with a master’s degree from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York. After my graduation I moved to DC and resumed modeling. I am now moving to Miami for a warmer climate. ECHOSTAGE LINEUP is obsessed with a guy and “won’t take a hint”, while “Get Physical” is a lusty proposition to be “your lover for just one night.” The album touches on a plethora of emotions and themes without fixating too much on one or the other; and that’s exactly what makes “Won’t Forget the Sound” worth a listen. You will be entertained with the variety, while simultaneously dancing your ass off to the gritty punk/ska rhythms, paired with killer guitar solos, and wrapped in a bow with soulful and mesmerizing trombone and trumpet sounds.

That’s exactly what Edson Hinostroza of Thirteen Towers did back in 2007 when he and a friend set out to start a new punk /ska band. After several iterations, the lineup consists of Mike Tolbert on lead vocals, Jeff Skinner on guitar, Xavier Peña on guitar, Edson Hinostroza on bass, Mikey Aary on Drums, and most recently, Mike Dranove on trombone and Chris Tolbert (Mike Tolbert’s cousin) on trumpet. As lead frontman, Mike Tolbert tells us, “the wind instruments really helped round out our sound, I feel like we’re complete now.” Complete is definitely a word I would use to describe Thirteen Towers. They invited me to one of their practices in Arlington, VA, and although we were in full polar vortex weather, the warmth inside the practice studio was palpable due to the bands chemistry. In addition to playing

live (constantly) and practicing religiously, Thirteen Towers recently had a CD baby. At the end of 2013 they released “Won’t Forget the Sound” their first full-length album and follow up to their previous EP, We Don’t Care. Guitar player Jeff Skinner recorded the album at his home studio, “I love the mixing part of making music. It’s like working out a puzzle to get everything to work together just right,” Skinner shares. “Won’t Forget the Sound” was somewhat of a puzzle to figure out initially due to its varying song themes. For example, “Shake It Off ” is a song about a guy whose wife leaves him, his house is foreclosed, he’s broke, and he’s literally sitting with a gun in his mouth, but then the chorus kicks in, “shake it off things will get better, shake it off things could be worse,” turning it into an upbeat song. Other songs like “In Africa” written by Edson, are speaking out for human rights, while “Underdog” written by Mikey Aary is a punk mentality song rebelling against society’s expectations. The breakout song “Matilda” is a song about a girl who

Two members of Thirteen Towers are Latinos, Edson (Peruvian-Hondurian) and Xavier (Puerto Rico) and they shared how their Latino roots have trickled into Thirteen Towers. Edson peppers in Spanish lyrics in “Matilda”, which was originally a Spanish song called “Maldita” back when Edson was playing in a Latin rock band. For Xavier, he says growing up listening to Santana, Mana, Enanitos Verdes, and Autenticos Decadentes has influenced his guitar riffs and style overall. During a live show at O’Shaugnessy’s in Old Town Alexandria, a diverse crowd gathered on a rainy night to rock out to what turned out to be a two-hour Thirteen Towers set due to a band cancelation. There were some nerves as the band figured out a ways to extend their 45-minute slot; however, once they were █ on stage, the nerves dissipated and they looked at home performing a high-energy set that left the crowd chanting for more. eing Latino is not just a cultural identity, for some it’s a telenovela thing. Of course, any good novela is only as good as it’s lead heartthrob. That’s why in 2014, you’ll be seeing a lot more of the leading man with smoldering eyes, Jaime Camil. The leading men in these novelas have the task of making us escape into the lives that unfold in these stories. When your leading man is witty, funny, has a killer smile, and has an outgoing personality that makes his characters shine and your knees weak, you’re likely watching a Jaime Camil novela. A multifaceted artist with over 20 years in the business, Camil is a television and film actor, singer, producer and host. He began his career in radio and then transitioned over to television with his debut in “El Show de Jaime Camil.” His leading role in “La Fea Mas Bella” launched him to international status by reaching over 4.3 million DAILY viewers worldwide. Jaime Camil has been able to play a heartthrob without being a cliché. His versatility has helped his career grow by exposing his talents to a varied audience. Many people were surprised to hear his talented voice in his role as a Mariachi singer in the recent successful film “Pulling Strings”. It’s no wonder he can sing! With Mexican heritage from his dad and Brazilian vocal talents from his mom, he was destined to be a star. What makes Jaime Camil stand out from all the other leading men, is his down to earth personality, his unbelievable charm and talent. Seriously, that man can do anything! While most telenovelas don’t begin U.S. broadcast until well after the series conclusion in Mexico, the networks have made an exception for Jaime Camil’s

most recent project, “Qué Pobres Tan Ricos”. The excitement generated by this show’s massive launch in Mexico led Univision to broadcast the telenovela ahead of schedule here in the U.S. As of January, this short-term comedic novella is now broadcast every weeknight at 10pm ET/PT (a first for this magnanimous network). Another thing that makes this novela unique is it’s focus on humor. Most telenovelas can be formulaic depending on the region. For example, you have your Mexican novelas with their breathtaking scenery and “girl gets the guy” in the end story line. Then you have your Colombian novelas, which have more drama with themes of mafia, violence and beautiful women. Venezuelan novelas are known for being mysterious and suspenseful, and then you have your Brazilian novelas which are so bold they will make you uncomfortable watching with grandma or mom beside you, muy caliente! In “Que Pobres Tan Ricos,” humor takes a center role (while still keeping the drama juicy). Whether you love them or hate them, telenovelas are sewn into the fabric of our Latino heritage. Often you can find multiple generations around a TV, sitting together in silence, eyes glued to the screen when the telenovela is on. They’re an escape that take us to exotic lands, they’re a part of our cultural identity, and bring people across the world together to speak the same telenovela language. So go ahead, indulge in this sinfully, and pleasurable past-time and watch “Que Pobres Tan Ricos” with heartthrob Jaime Camil via Univision every weeknight at 10PM ET/PT, just remember when the telenovela is on, do not dare touch the remote! █

Latino super-group De La Tierra has released their highly anticipated self-titled debut album, an 11 track assault on your senses. Get your devil horns up and your fists pumping because this album truly delivers. A new combined offering from some of the biggest names in Latin music, Andrés Gimenez (A.N.I.M.A.L), Andreas Kisser (Sepultura), Sr. Flavio (Fabulosos Cadillacs) and Alex “El Animal” Gonzalez (Maná) have united their strengths together to create a unique metal offering in a pop driven Latino market. Andrés’ guttural vocals combined with Alex’s pulsing and tribal drumming lay the metal groundwork, but when you add Andreas’ shredding guitar and Flavio’s bass downbeat, the combination is a strikingly heavy and legit sound. Each member has a track that highlights their talent, for example, Andreas’ guitar and Alex’s drum solo in Corran is unmistakably them. The bass heavy Reducidores de Cabezas has Flavio plastered all over it and the vocals in Rostros are guttural, heavy and totally Andrés. Each track tells a story that correlates with the vibe and feel of the whole. The expectations from fans and media alike for De La Tierra have been huge, and these guys have delivered. They saved the best and fastest track Cosmonauta Quechua, for last and all I can say is, holy hell! I never thought I would hear Alex and Flavio playing█ that hard. Its metal, its heavy, its fast and it’s a rockero approved album. Now go out and get it!

Last we heard from Jarabedepalo they were asking us “¿Y Ahora, Que Hacemos? “ (Now What Do We Do?) now three years later after massive tours, the jig is up: “SOMOS”( We Are) is the news and we are liking it, a lot! With a more “American Rock” and funk influence, Jarabedepalo returns with new music, an updated sound and unmistakable Jarabe style lyrics. Lead singer Pau Donés best captures the spirit of this album with the words: “Somos lo que somos, no lo que queremos.” Think about it. In a time where individualism has taken over our social values, Jarabedepalo pushes us to examine our environment, open our eyes and unite to find the way back to happiness. A pretty cool task if you ask us. With 12 tracks that go from upbeat with songs like “A Mi Novia Le Gustan Las Chicas”, to contemplative and romantic moments in, “Tú No Sabes Quién Soy” and “Lo Que Te Voy A Decir”, SOMOS is the perfect album to usher in a new year and new season. No Jarabe album would be complete without that one track that speaks to all of us searching for “the one” and for me that’s “¿A Dónde Vas?” featuring none other than Ximena Sariñana, a Mexican singer/songwriter that pairs with lead singer Pau Donés’ voice brilliantly. Definitely one of Jarabe’s best collaborations yet! I think we can all agree that we are who we are, not what everyone else wants us to beSomos lo que somos- and SOMOS is Jarabedepalo at their best. █

The night began with music and dancing as the DJ played popular salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton, and bachata hits to keep people moving as they anxiously awaited the arrival of Leslie Grace. The crowd was full of faces of all ages and dressed to dance the night away. There was an air of “buena onda”, as everyone was smiling and having a good time. I even witnessed a timid gringa getting a bachata dance lesson in the women’s bathroom. Shortly after 1am, the Princess of Bachata broke through her wall of bodyguards and took the stage before her kingdom of loyal fans. She opened with her heartfelt hit, “Odio No Odiarte”, as the crowd moved and sang along. Clad in all black leather, her big hair seemed even more voluminous against her tiny frame. She celebrated her 19th birthday with fans and was even presented with a personalized birthday cake on stage. Leslie Grace sang on into the early hours of the morning as she continued to serenade the crowd with other chart topping hits such as “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”, “Day One”, and “Be My Baby”. From the enthusiastic cheers from fans, it was obvious that the concert was a success, and one thing can be said for sure, Leslie Grace definitely knows how to keep a crowd out past their bedtimes! █

J BALVIN MEANS BUSINESS AT THE PALACE

Witnessing J Balvin “El Negocio” at The Palace in Woodbridge, VA on Friday, January 10th was well worth the wait! Opening act Jason Cerda, whose choreographed set featuring two female dancers, was most appreciated by the ladies since he was no eyesore. During the introduction, he was compared to R&B artist Usher and I could see why – the man can dance! His back-flips left quite an impression on fans. J Balvin’s first appearance in the area was highly anticipated and even “Pretty Boi Mo” commented that people had been inquiring when J Balvin would finally make his way to the DMV. J Balvin’s set consisted of extended live versions of “Yo Te Lo Dije,” “Tranquila,” ”Sin Compromiso,” “En Lo Oscuro,” “Sola,” “6 am,” and the Latin version of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines”. This Colombian hitmaker, who learned English while living in New York, was accompanied by two male breakdancers introduced as “ABC” who gave concertgoers a good show by also incorporating flips. His fans from Colombia couldn’t contain their excitement and welcomed him by standing as close to the front as possible to wave their red, yellow and blue flags. This high-energy crowd was able to take a picture with the reggaetón artist to be posted on his social media sites, which excited me and many others who follow him on social media platforms. The show was very refreshing – I hope he comes back soon! █

This month love seems to be on everybody’s mind. But how much do we really know about love? Why do we pursue it so badly? And what about monogamy, I mean, can you really have hot sex with the same person for 30 years? Well, you’ll be happy to know we now have answers to ALL these questions (backed by years of solid research). You’ll get the cliff notes here, but for more in-depth information I highly recommend the new book “Love Sense: The Revolutionary New Science of Romantic Relationships,” by Dr. Sue Johnson. Sex is great for reproduction, but from an evolutionary perspective love is what’s essential for our species to survive. Love is what bonds our caretakers to us when we are born- so that they don’t just leave the loud, crying, needy, newborn to fend for himself. As humans, our number one instinct is to seek a comforting connection (not sex or aggression, as society seems to suggest sometimes). We are all born with this drive to seek comfort from others, and that need doesn’t go away when we reach adulthood. Technically, romantic love is an ordered evolutionary recipe for the survival of our species. I know, that doesn’t sound very sexy, but doesn’t it make perfect sense? Back in the caveman days who had a higher chance of surviving? The lone caveman? Or those who always had each others’ back and warned each other if danger was coming, or shared food, and cared for each other when sick? In our society there is so much emphasis on being independent and self-sufficient that the need for connection, or the need to depend on a loved one is often viewed as a sign of weakness. In reality, the opposite is true, emotional support actually lowers blood pressure, and bolsters the immune system. In fact, a close emotional connection is the strongest predictor of happiness (even stronger than winning the lottery!) Here’s another revelation….monogamy is actually our natural state! Hot sex doesn’t lead to secure love, secure love leads to hot sex. Our bodies actually produce chemicals that bond us firmly to our loved ones, one of them is oxytocin (aka “the cuddle hormone”), which is released during both breastfeeding and orgasm. Several studies have shown that the thrill in a couple’s sex life can last indefinitely. Sexual satisfaction for both men and women increases with emotional commitment and sexual exclusivity. The key is finding the right person. So there you have it, this mysterious, elusive thing called love- is actually not that mysterious at all. It’s essential to our survival, we are wired for it, and monogamy can be hot. So why are relationships so hard then? Ah, that’s for another column. █
