afael Castillo is better known by his stage name, “De La Ghetto”. The reggaeton artist who was born in New York on September 17, 1986, grew up with his family in Puerto Rico. He started his career as part of the duo Arcangel and De La Ghetto in 2004 who released “Pégate” and he has collaborated with top urban music artists such as Daddy Yankee, Hector El Father, Tito El Bambino, Ivy Queen, Cosculluela, Nengo Flow, J Alvarez, Zion and Farruko just to name a few. De La Ghetto’s collaborations have generated some tremendous hits such as his work on “Llegamos A La Disco” and “After Party” (Daddy Yankee), “Siente El Boom” (Tito El Bambino), “Sensación del Bloque” (Randy), “Un Poco Loca” ( Jowell & Randy), “Mala Conducta Remix” (Alexis & Fido) and “Candy Remix” with Plan B. Los Lonely Boys, the Mexican-American sibling trio from San Angelo, Texas are back again after taking some time out of the spotlight. The trio, including guitarist Henry Garza, bassist, JoJo Garza, and drummer, Ringo Garza Jr. have a unique Texicano Rock n’ Roll style that combines elements of rock, blues, tex-mex, conjunto, and tejano music. The group is known for hit singles such as “Heaven” and “I Don’t Wanna Lose Your Love” with Carlos Santana.

Ringo Jr., Henry, and Jojo Garza grew up in San Angelo Texas where they were taught to play music by their father, Ringo Garza Sr., a former member of a sibling band himself, the Falcones, who played conjunto music throughout southern Texas in the 70s and 80s. The Garza brothers performed with their father in Nashville before eventually branching out on their own in 1996 and coming up with a name for themselves, Los Lonely Boys, in an effort to pay homage to their father who had written a song for them

called “Lonely Boy”. In 2003, the brothers recorded their debut album, Los Lonely Boys at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Studio in Austin where Nelson himself sat in on many sessions. The album was picked up by Epic Records and the album’s hit single, “Heaven” quickly topped the charts, earning a #1 spot on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Chart, and won a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. In 2005, Los Lonely Boys collaborated with Santana on his All That I Am album and were nominated for two Grammys for their album Sacred. In 2009, Los Lonely Boys left Epic and were signed by Austin’s Playing In Traffic Records. The following year, the trio was awarded “Best Rock Band” in the Austin Music Awards. It’s been an amazing ride for Los Lonely Boys ever since, and in January of 2014, Los Lonely Boys released their latest album, Revelation. “We decided to call this album Revelation because we want to make music that reveals something to people about their lives and their world,” says Jojo Garza.

While composing the album, the brothers worked with top songwriters and musicians such as Matthew Gerrard, country icon Radney Foster, David Quiñones, George Pajon Jr. and Keith Harris of the Black Eyed Peas, and Raul Pacheco of Ozomatli, among others. Revelation is Los Lonely Boys first recording since guitarist, Henry Garza’s fall offstage at a Los Angeles concert, in which he landed face first, fracturing his neck, and injuring his spine. After a long recovery, Henry Garza now says he’s “ready to rock”. Revelation incorporates a fusion of conjunto, reggae, pop, and of course, rock. The album has many new tracks to look forward to including: “Blame It On Love,” “Give A Little More,” “It’s Just My Heart Talkin’, “Familia” and “There’s Always Tomorrow.” Don’t miss out on your chance to see this Texicano Rock phenomenon performing their newest masterpieces. Los Lonely Boys will be performing in Washington DC on April 1st at 7:30pm at the Hamilton 600 14th ST Washington, DC. For more information visit www. loslonelyboys.com. █

Arcangel y De La Ghetto parted ways in 2006 to launch solo careers. In 2008 De La Ghetto launched his first album, “Masacre Musical” which sold 100,000 copies in the U.S. and Latin America. He has also released various mix tapes. “Es Difícil” hit the Billboard charts at number 42. In 2011, Arcangel and De La Ghetto were reunited to perform at Isla Margarita Reggaeton Fest in Venezuela. In 2012, De La Ghetto has participated in an event that was close to his heart, a cancer benefit show which he dedicated to his mother who passed away from cancer a few years ago. De La Ghetto has certainly done well on his own, reaching international fame among English & Spanish speaking audiences. His bilingual abilities have greatly contributed to his rise to success. It’s no wonder that he’s also been called “El Jefe De La Versatilidad”. Thanks to this versatility he has also recorded with hip-hop artists such as, Lil Wayne, Nelly, Timbaland, Akon and most recently Rick Ross. His youthful energy, to the point, and smooth, seductive flow are what keep his fans listening. If you haven’t listening to De La Ghetto before, check out my personal favorites which are “Saciar La Sed” and “Jala Gatillo”. Other De La Ghetto songs include “Mirala”, “Ahi Ahi Ahi”, “Todo Gucci” and “Tu y Yo”. De La Ghetto performs live at CocoCabana in MD on March 14, 2014. Tickets are available on Tickeri.com. █

As ageless as ever By: Alexandra Lucia

hether you have yet to experience Julio Iglesias’ musical genius or are a longtime fan, get ready to share an intimate evening of his famous hits from the past and songs from his most recent album.

a total of 53 albums. His career began in 1969 with the album Yo Canto and through consistent development, his work has propelled him through the seventies and into the 21st century. Along the way, he has amassed an army of worldwide fans and numerous accolades that recognize his talent and persistence.

Throughout his career, Mr. Iglesias has written and released

His most recent project was released in 2011; 1, is his first studio album released since 2007’s “Quelque Chose de France”. In “1”, Iglesias revisits 15 of his most cherished songs, which manage to stay true to the originals despite the obvious maturity in his voice and what one can imagine is a much pricier production. Some songs span 40 years in Iglesias’ career, along with versions of infamous songs like Elvis’ “I Can’t Help Falling In Love” and a duet with Stevie Wonder in “My Love”. It is presumed that this is only one of several remake albums in the works, following Iglesias’ compilation albums released in 2010 that included, The Essential: Julio Iglesias and Original Album Classics.

While it is possible that Mr. Iglesias is a natural born performer, his talent was cultivated after tragedy struck. He was born in Madrid, Spain on September 23, 1943, and neither of his parents were musicians. He attended CEU San Pablo where he studied law, throughout his collegiate years; he was an accomplished athlete and was able to balance his rigorous course of study while playing football (soccer). After college, he transitioned from law and began to play professionally as a goalkeeper for Real Madrid Castilla. While an illustrious career as a professional athlete seemed plausible, a car accident at the age of nineteen, changed his fate and the course of his life. He was left paralyzed with a broken spine. Due to the severity of the car crash, he was unable to walk for two years. It was during the arduous rehabilitation period that he was given a guitar by a nurse, to occupy his time. This thoughtful and simple gift would spiral Mr. Iglesias into a world of self-discovery and musical talent that he had never tapped into. While Julio would eventually go on to obtain his law degree, his career path would be permanently changed. After winning several songwriting contests in the late to mid seventies, he relocated to Miami Florida (in 1979) and signed a deal with CBS International. Immediately after being signed, he prioritized performing in several languages. In addition to his native Spanish, he began to sing in French, Portuguese, English and German. His hard work began to pay off when he received one of many nominations for Best Latin Pop Album at the 1988 Grammy Awards for his album Un Hombre Solo (A Man Alone) but, that was just the tip of the iceberg. He would walk away winning the award that year and would receive additional nominations (for various albums) in 1981, 1983, 1985, 1993, 1996 & 1998.

Most recently, in 2013, Iglesias was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records Hall of Fame as the Best-selling Male Latin Artist. He also holds the record for the Latin artist who has sold the most records in history, with 300 million sales worldwide. Julio Iglesias should certainly be considered royalty among fans and musicians from Latin America and throughout the world. His performance is one you will not want to miss. On Saturday, April 26, 2014, Julio Iglesias will grace the Music Center at Strathmore with a live performance for the 2014 Strathmore Gala. This is part of Iglesias’ world tour, which includes over 20 cities in the United States including New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall and will take him around the world once more. Don’t miss your chance to see this great performing at the Strathmore! iempo Libre, or ‘free time’ in English, is a hip Cuban band playing their music on stages all over the world. The band has been nominated for three Grammy awards and have appeared on multiple stages to include the Tonight Show, Live from Lincoln Center, and Dancing with the Stars just to name a few. Their music has taken Tiempo Libre across continents from New Orleans, Los Angeles, and New York City to Italy, Israel, and even to Hong Kong. In addition, Tiempo Libre worked alongside Josh Bell, a Grammy award winning violinist and conductor. So far, the band has released five albums, three of which were nominated for Grammys. They are known for their musical style, timba, which is a mixture of salsa, Afro-Cuban folk, and American funk and R&B. Composed of seven talented musicians, Tiempo Libre is led by musical director and pianist, Jorge Gomez, and completed by Xavier Mili the lead singer, Wilvi Rodriguez Guerra on bass, Luis Beltran Castillo on saxophone and the flute, Leandro Gonzalez on the congas, Raul Rodriguez on the trumpet, and Israel Morales Figueroa beating the drums. All of the members of Tiempo Libre attended the ENA (Escuela Nacional de Arte / National School of Art) in

Havana, Cuba, known for its excellent music department.

the Tuscan Sun Festival, they performed to a sold-out venue.

Jorge Gomez founded Tiempo Libre in 2001. Originally planned as just a side project, Gomez only worked on the band during his free time, which is why he called the band Tiempo Libre. Eventually, Gomez came across other ENA graduates while he was living in Miami and soon enough, Tiempo Libre was no longer a side project, but a full-time band. Tiempo Libre cites their manager, Elizabeth Sobol, as their stepping stone to international fame. Sobol was a manager strictly for classical musicians until one evening, she heard timba music playing at a bar in Mexico. Shortly after, Tiempo Libre opened for Celia Cruz at the 2002 Ravinia Festival in Chicago. The crowd was composed of over 12,000 attendees and the band was invited to the 2003 Ravinia Festival to open for Aretha Franklin. At this concert, Tiempo Libre played to an audience of more than 20,000 attendees. After these major performances, Tiempo Libre went on tour to Thailand for the Heineken Jazz Festival, Malaysia for the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, Indonesia for Java Jazz Festival, and to South Korea for the Gwangju World Music Festival. They also gained a spot in the Singapore Sun Fest. When the band made a stop in Cortona, Italy for

Even though Tiempo Libre has been granted fame in all corners of the world, they are also famous back in Miami. In 2008, the Miami New Times bestowed Tiempo Libre with the title “Best Latin Band of 2008.” They also collaborated on the musical project Miami Libre, a story told in English and Spanish sharing the immigrant experiences of the seven band members. Miami Libre was first performed at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami Dade country. In the spring of 2012, Tiempo Libre was led by Giancarlo Guerrero, the musical conductor of the Nashville Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra. Tiempo Libre performed with the Cleveland Orchestra to over 4,000 students at Miami Dade public schools. The band enjoys playing music for a living, but they especially enjoy playing for young audience members. Tiempo Libre is currently touring in Canada, but they will be making a stop at the Artisphere on April 4th, 2014. For tickets and information visit: www. artisphere.com. ith contagious songs like “Medicina de Amor”, “Ay Hombre”, “Que Vuelva”, “Mujer Infiel, “Nereyda” and “Esta Noche” bachata fans the world over recognize the voice and name of Raulin Rodriguez. He was born on June 16, 1970 in Montecristi, Dominican Republic and took to music at an early age. By 14 he had joined a school chorus and had taught himself to play the guitar. Due to circumstances he was unable to continue his education, however that has not held him back in terms of having a successful career. On his first album, “Una Mujer Como Tu” (“A Woman Like You”) released in 1993 he tagged himself “El Cacique del Amargue”, a title that has stuck with him ever since. Subsequent albums include “Regresa Amor”, “Medicina De Amor”, “El Amor Da Vida”, “Me La Pusieron Dificil”, “Soledad”, “Corazón, Corazón”, “Sin Fortuna”, “Arrancame La Vida” and “Derroche de Amor”. “Piel Sin Alma”, “Donde Iré Sin Ti”, “Parece Mentira” and “Llamame” are among his other albums. He appeared on bachata megastar Romeo Santos’ La Formula Vol. 1 adding vocals to the song “Debate de 4” along with Luis Vargas and Anthony Santos released in 2011. The quality and richness of his music puts him in a class with the aftorementioned in addition to Hector “El Torito” Acosta, Frank Reyes and Zacarias Ferreira. He has put on concerts in U.S. cities ranging from Houston to Miami to New York. Raulin was nominated for the “Cassandra Awards” in the Dominican Republic for “Bachatero of the Year” which is not only based on popularity among fans but also measured in record sales domestically and on a global scale. Considered a pioneer of bachata in terms of increasing its popularity internationally inside and outside of the Dominican Republic, there’s no doubt that Raulin’s music has helped to pave the way for some of my favorite artists who make up the latest generation of bachateros (and bachateras) such as Prince Royce, Leslie Grace, XTreme, Bachata Heightz, Karlos Rose, and 24 Horas. Get your fix of bachatamania with Raulin Rodriguez on Friday, March 7 at The Palace and Saturday, March 8 at Galaxy Nightclub. Tickets available on Tickeri.com. █

Tomatito Sextet Rumba Gitana in DC

By: Veronica Brown

ashington DC will play host this March to one the fines guitarists of his generation. Multiple Latin Grammy winner and world-renowned flamenco guitarist Tomatito will be delighting us with his gypsy sounds at George Washington University’s Lisner auditorium on March 18th. After years of working with famed flamenco vocalist Camaron de la Isla, Tomatito has now united an ensemble cast of singers, clappers, guitarist, and dancer Paloma Fantova who together works to transport the listener to the musical heights of Andalusia. Jose Fernando Torrez, known as “Tomatito,” which in Spanish means little tomato, was born in the Andalusian city of Almeria. His musical talents hail from previous generations as his Grandfather and Father, both known as “El Tomate,” were well known figures in the musical stages of Almeria. His uncles are also famed guitarists in France and in their native Spain. Tomatito is said to have had an innate talent and from by age 10 played his first concert accompanying a well-known Flamenco singer in one of Almeria’s Flamenco clubs or as they are known in Spain, “peñas.” He continued to play extensively at this Peña until the family moved to Malaga where he began to play at La Taverna Gitana, stage for many famous flamenco dancers such as La Kika and Pepito Vargas. At this time he was also perfecting his talents taking lessons from legends such as Pedro Blanco and Enrique Naranjo.

La Taverna Gitana proved to be turning point for Tomatito’s career. It was there that top artists whom he revered, such as Pansequito, Lebrijano, Paco de Lucía and even Camarón de la Isla, would hear him play. One day, Camaron de la Isla unexpectedly found himself in need of a guitarist. 15-year-old Tomatito was asked to fill in and he filled in for 18 years until the tragic death of Camaron de La Isla in 1992. During his time with Camaron, Tomatito established himself as one of the most prestigious accompanying guitarists in Spain. The pair sold out concerts in Spain as well as abroad and produced legendary albums such as La Leyenda Del Tiempo and Soy Caminante. The duo, in addition to Paco de Lucia, is credited with helping to bring about Flamencos’ revival in the last half of the 20th century. Tomatito had a hard time adapting to the absence of his dear friend Camaron and his larger than life voice. Many artists were wary of appearing on stage with Tomatito for fears of never being able to fill the void of Camaron. In a way it was that fear that launched Tomatito’s successful solo career. Today he performs hundreds of concerts around the world and has accompanied top artists not only in the genre of Flamenco but also the likes of Frank Sinatra and Elton John. In 1998 the singer started a collaboration with pianist Michel Camilo that led to concerts across Spain’s major stages and whose compilation in 2000 won him his first Latin Grammy, one of an accolade of prizes he has won throughout

his career. Of his many albums there are two that are required material for those interested, Live in Paris 1987, for which he collected another Grammy, displays his work with Camaron de La Isla, and the other Paseo de los Castaños, released in 2001, is pure Flamenco perfection with Tomatito’s own personal sound. Tomatito’s latest album, Soy Flamenco, along with his previous work will be performed live at Lisner Auditorium on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 8:00pm. Don’t miss out on seeing one of the legends of Flamenco right here in the Washington DC area. Tickets are available here: http:// lisner.gwu.edu/tomatito-sextet █

His voice is hypnotizing, he sings with a passion that cannot be duplicated and he is the epitome of what a gentleman is. With over three decades seducing the music airwaves, Gilberto Santa Rosa has embarked

Later on, Gilberto would unite with the legend and Latino crooner Chucho Avellanet to give life to a comedy club act called “Cantando y Contando.” Together they toured the island of Puerto Rico in small intimate venues to perform as storytellers and sing their favorite songs.

They say that if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere. And for Gilberto Santa Rosa, in 1995 he made it big in New York. His legacy in the salsa history books was solidified when he became the first Puerto Rican Tropical music artist to perform at Carnegie Hall. This unforgettable night was encapsulated in the album “En Vivo Desde El Carnegie Hall.” Gilberto’s sonero (improvisation) skills paid off big time because on this very important night in his career, he performed a four-minute unscripted addition to his song “Perdoname” which became such a sensation that Gilberto had to memorize his own improvised lines from this performance for future concerts and made “Perdoname” the official closing song to his shows.

If you’ve ever asked yourself how do you forget that person you loved but is no longer in your life? How do you move on? These fundamental questions are answered in the heartbeat of his salsa, the heartstrings of his boleros, and the passion of his ballads. Gilberto sings the answers to you in his songs with a rhythm that can seduce a member of the opposite sex, heal a broken heart, or celebrate a timeless love. “My purpose is to touch people’s hearts. Since I don’t write, I make it a point that when someone listens to my music, that they see themselves reflected in my songs as if they were watching a movie.” With a plethora of awards including 4 Grammy’s, Gilberto Santa

An artist’s work is never done. Exploration is a natural consequence of an artistic personality and Gilberto Santa Rosa took his vocal talents to the stage again. He participated in his first theatrical production “La Pareja Dispareja” and later a starring role in “La Verdadera Historia De Pedro Navaja” where he met his now wife, the actress and presenter Alexandra Malagón. Broadway was calling Gilberto’s name and he moved on to star in “Forever Tango” where sang and danced Tango standards and a handful of his most famous songs rearranged into Tango style. From the Broadway stages Gilberto made the jump to

Rosa has become the model gentleman. With his sharp style both on and off stage, he continually impresses with humility and down to earth personality. So if you are a diehard salsero or fell in love with Gilberto and his boleros, the fact is this, on March 6 Gilberto Santa Rosa will bring us together at the Fillmore in Silver Spring to dance, sing and celebrate love with a sophistication that only El Caballero de la Salsa can summon. FOOD

You Don’t Need to Travel Far to Get a Taste of Havana By: Sarah Barrie

uba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar opened its doors in Washington, DC in the summer of 2011, joining its other venues in Philadelphia, Atlantic City, and Orlando. Operated by nationally renowned award winning chef and Argentine native, Guillermo Pernot, Pernot is credited for introducing Nuevo Latino cuisine to Philadelphia, and also ran the kitchen at Gloria Estefan’s Latin South Beach restaurant, Allioli. Although originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pernot focuses primarily on Cuban Cuisine. Having a Cuban wife (whose great-grandfather was Cuba’s third president), and great appreciation for Cuban culture, Pernot wanted to show people that Cuban food was not just rice and beans. Pernot makes a point to showcase the diverse culinary delights Cuba has to offer, adding his own modern twist. One of the many reasons Cuba Libre stands out is its beautiful decor. Its spacious open-air setting is reminiscent of a typical Havana locale, with large windows, indoor balconies, tropical plants, and traditional wooden tables and chairs with salsa music playing in the

background. The decor recreates different scenes of Havana such as El Paladar, (a name for a small restaurant, typically set inside someone’s home), La Biblioteca Nacional, and La Floridita, a popular restaurant-bar that was frequented by Fidel Castro and Ernest Hemmingway. The food is just as exceptional as the decor. I started off with some bread and mango butter, and an order of Tostones. The Tostones (or patacones), consisted of long fried, crisp green plantains and were served with Garlic-mojo dipping sauce. I also enjoyed a side of Haitian style Eggplant salad, black bean hummus, and my favorite, the Cuba Libre Salsa. To wash some of the spiciness down, I enjoyed an impressive Coconut Mojito, which may be my new favorite drink. It was unlike any drink I have ever tasted and reminded me of a piña colada with a cool refreshing minty taste. Next on the menu, were the empanadas, the primary reason for my visit as Cuba Libre prepares to launch for its Empanada Festival in April 2014. Having lived in Buenos Aires myself, I am no stranger to a good empanada. There are four main empanadas on the menu

affectionately called “Mama Amelia’s” empanadas: Cheese, Beef, Pork, or Chicken. I first tried the Cheese Empanada. An excellent choice, filled with Mozzarella, Tetilla, and Monterey Jack cheeses, and sweet roasted onions, inside a circular crunchy shell, the Cheese Empanada was served with spicy yellow mustard dipping sauce that gave it that spicy kick. Next came the Chicken Empanadas, one of Chef Pernot’s mother’s personal recipes, and were filled with fresh hand chopped chicken, corn, sweet peppers, and jack cheese, all inside a crunchy, flaky, shell. The juicy filling almost reminded me of a mini chicken potpie, simply delicious. The Beef Empanadas were stuffed with flavorful ground beef, olives, and raisins. The Pork Empanadas, were one of my favorites, filled with succulent pulled pork, roasted poblano peppers and charred tomatoes. Served with an Aji-sour cream dipping sauce, the Pork Empanadas were delicious and unique, a culinary masterpiece. Just when I thought the meal was over, dessert arrived. Of the Tres Leches, Cuban Flan, and Chocolate Torte, the Chocolate Torte was hands down my favorite. With a crunchy, crumbly, fallen

chocolate soufflé tart, layered with dulce de leche, and topped with a cool and creamy dulce de leche ice cream, this torta was amazingly delicious, and served with a side of chocolate-orange sauce and blueberry compote. Chef-Partner Pernot admitted he is a huge fan of dulce de leche, and that growing up in Buenos Aires, there was always a jar of dulce de leche in the refrigerator ready to be eaten with a spoon. To finish the meal, I enjoyed a Café Cuba Libre, a tasty, strong Cuban coffee with steamed coconut milk. It was the perfect finish to a wonderful dining experience. With its delicious food and Latin dancing Friday and Saturday nights, Cuba Libre is one of my favorite spots in the DC area, and is a must try if you haven’t experienced it yet. Stay tuned to the Kesta DC Blog to hear more about the amazing Empanada Festival taking place at Cuba Libre in April. Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar is located in Chinatown at 801 9th Street, NW, Washington, D.C. For more information, visit www. CubaLibreRestaurant.com. █

By: Rosario Garcia

A FIXTURE IN THE DC COMMUNITY FOR OVER 30 YEARS, I HEARD ABOUT QUIQUE AVILES LONG BEFORE I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET HIM. HE’S ONE OF THOSE CHARACTERS THAT MAKES SUCH A DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLE’S LIVES AND IS SO RESPECTED THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY THAT HIS REPUTATION REALLY DOES PRECEDE HIM. So who is Quique Aviles? The short answer is that he’s a Salvadoran performance artist, writer, poet, teacher, and activist. After graduating from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in 1985, he co-founded the LatiNegro Theater Collective, which brought its socially conscious theatre to schools, jails, and community centers. One can say that he’s specialized in bringing reality, truth, and first-person experience to the unlikeliest of settings. In his latest performance, Tongue: Sin Pelos en La Lengua, directed by long time friend B Stanley, Quique merges his love for standup with his love for theatre to bring you what he succinctly described as, “some sh*t that really needs to be said.” In Tongue, Quique philosophizes on humankinds’ greatest invention – language.

The piece is part monologue, part rant, part poetry, and definitely full comedy. Quique’s reflects on the 30+ years as a resident of the city, navigating Black English and White English, proper English and street English, the language of the gentrified and gentrifier, of the banker and the hustler. “From the very beginning we’re taught that there is good language and bad language. Good language comes with degrees, and bad language comes from ‘motherf*ckers’ like us,” shares Quique. Sin Pelos en la Lengua is the culmination of a two-year process that brought together a multi-ethnic, multi-racial team. Quique’s main collaborator is Sheila Mirza, a Pakistani-American activist, poet, and performing artist originally from Queens, NY. “The whole concept of the show is to show how we all get pulled into the variances of language, how we have to learn the proper lingo depending on who we’re talking to. If you don’t know how to talk the talk you’re not getting into that circle,” says Sheila Mirza. The piece gets very personal and autobiographical for Quique, “I talk about learning how to communicate in a nonprofit doing social work, to how I learned to communicate with drug dealers when I was using drugs, to learning what language to use when I was a recovering addict in rehab. It’s all drawn from personal

experience. But I also throw it back to the audience and ask questions.”

is a muscle, you need to practice it or you lose it.”

Although the piece has its deep moments, Quique gets his point across using humor as well. “One example of humor and language is a piece that dramatizes Ghandi in the middle of his hunger strike. Various characters visit Ghandi and try to convince him to eat using their own language, you have a Cuban, a Spaniard, a Salvadorean, and a Mexican among others,” shares Quique with a laugh. As I listen to Quique flawlessly demonstrating each accent, I already know this part of the show will be hilarious.

In addition to his solo work, Quique is the founder and current director of Paso Nuevo, GALA Hispanic Theatre’s Youth Theater Program. Paso Nuevo gathers high school kids and teaches them about theatre from performing and acting, to writing, to stagemanaging, and production. The kids work 20 hours a week for 6 weeks until they’re able to perform their creation at the GALA Hispanic Theatre itself.

Both Quique and Sheila Mirza tirelessly conducted research and led multiple interviews with linguists, and characters throughout the DC area, and people from around the world, some of whom lent their voices for what will be an audio/ visual portion of Tongue. This is the first time Quique has relied on technology to emphasize the impact of his message, “I do touch on the depletion of language through technology in the piece. We don’t read books anymore, we get everything online, and we’re continuously watching videos so our verbal skills are limited. Now everyone texts, so it’s all abbreviations. I talk about my work with the kids and how limited their language skills are. Language

One of the group’s instructors is Alina Collins Maldonado, who will be performing a special one-woman show titled “Bag Lady Blues” as an opening act for Tongue. In Bag Lady Blues, Alina tells her own story addressing issues of identity, addiction, body image, and sexuality that young women face today. “I find a freedom in performing. When you’re on stage you get to unpack and shed what you put on in order to conform. It’s so freeing to let all that baggage out,” shares Alina. Tongue: Sin Pelos en la Lengua by Quique Aviles and Bag Lady Blues by Alina Collins Maldonado will be presented on Saturday, March 29 and April 5 at 8 pm at GALA Hispanic Theatre, 3333 14th street, NW, DC. e can finally begin to get a little excited about the spring. Goodbye coat weather, nice knowing ya! Switch your closet out, do a little spring cleaning and get ready to bring those crop tops back out. This spring, trends consist of a lot of white. Did someone say white on white on white? You got it. Essential pieces to own are white or ivory crop tops, white wide-leg pants and white skirts. Play around with the different textures and different shades of white. On the runway, designers also incorporated the classic black and white combo, pastels and metallics. Other trends to mention are sheer fabrics, ear cuffs, graphic patterns and floral prints. On the makeup side, bright orange lips stood out on the runways. Make up artists chose to use white eye shadows and a lot of eyeliner, the cat-eye is here to stay. One piece of advice, always █ carry a bleach pen in your purse when dressed all in white!

ECHOSTAGE LINEUP

By: Juan Leon

By: José Vasquez

eatly folded, and tucked away inside a box in the trunk of a car was the inventory of The Hustle Team clothing line. A collection of snapbacks, sweatshirts, t-shirts ready for sale from a mobile store. DJ Suelto stands at the helm of The Hustle Team brand, and admits he originally launched the line as a promotional tool for a movement under the same name. “At first it wasn’t supposed to be a clothing line,” says DJ Suelto, “The Hustle Team was going to be an organization of DJs, artists, models and more like a movement. I was going to make shirts, and then someone came to me with the idea of making hats, so I started making hats too.” People were extremely receptive to the brand designs, so DJ Suelto turned his focus towards building a fashion line, rather than the network of DJs, artists, and models he had set out to create. “I’m an entrepreneur, so anyway I can succeed or build my brand, I’ll always go ahead and do it,” says DJ Suelto. “Before I would always look up to Jay-Z and Diddy, they had their own clothing lines, which generated millions, but it was never a goal of mine to create a clothing line.” About six months ago, DJ Suelto moved the clothing store online. Sales were sporadic before moving to the web, said DJ Suelto, but now he sells as

many as four snapbacks a day. When designing the snapbacks, DJ Suelto wanted to incorporate fresh ideas. He wanted people to be impressed by its exceptional and avant-garde design, so he added prints to the peaks of the snapbacks. “It was really important for the designs to stand out and for somebody to say ‘not a lot of people have that,’” says DJ Suelto. “Stores, for example, are just now starting to carry snapbacks with leopard.”

Part of the brand’s success is attributable to DJ Suelto’s marketing strategy. For the first month of the brand’s production, DJ Suelto just wanted to get the name out there so he sold items at reduced prices and sent urban Latin artists a few courtesy items. Ivy Queen, J King y Maximan, and Benny Benni were some of the artists who received promotional gear, and have helped bring the brand to parts outside of the DMV like Puerto Rico.

The Hustle Team, however, had already capitalized on animal print designs months ago. Other Hustle Team snapbacks include military, zebra, and cobra prints, but the most popular and his personal favorite has been the leopard, which is on back order as of mid-February, says DJ Suelto.

“It’s funny because I had friends go to Puerto Rico who said when they went to Club Brava, they saw some of the reggaetoneros wearing my snapbacks,” he shared.

In the beginning, DJ Suelto only worked with a graphic designer and hat maker to produce the first few designs. As he looks to expand the brand, DJ Suelto has started collaborating with a marketing team. With the help of the marketing team, DJ Suelto has been able to focus on designing higher quality items in men’s wear. “The marketing team explained to me how important it is to reach out to a certain market,” he shared, “The Hustle Team is kind of an urban brand designed for younger people to wear out to lunch or the club.”

DJ Suelto says he hopes to grow the Hustle Team into an international brand, and with sales already picking up in parts of Central and South America, it’s clear he’s well on his way. For more information about the Hustle Team brand, visit: http://www. djsuelto.com/thehustleteam/ █

It’s a busy and starpacked month at Echostage in March, topped off by the Kesta 10 Year Anniversary Party at Jarabe De Palo on the 27th.

Living Phantoms’ remix of “Hanging On” and B-Roc of the Knocks’ Ellie Goulding/Daft Punk mashup of “Under The Sheets” and “Something About Us”.

Friday, March 7: Lorde. 17-year-old Australian sensation Lorde brings her unique blend of art, indie and a fresh perspective on pop to Echostage. The moment when everybody at the show yells out “Let me be your ruuuuulerrrrrrr!” should be awesome.

Thursday, March 20: Cut Copy. More big name Australians. Cut Copy’s music is extremely well-made electropop. “Hearts On Fire” is class. A bit of a change up for a venue like Echostage but definitely a welcome one.

Saturday, March 8: David Guetta. David Guetta needs no introduction, no description, no promotion. Seriously, don’t even bother reading this part. Or this one. Sunday, March 9: David Guetta w/ Showtek. Guetta returns. This time with Dutch producer Showtek. Showtek is probably best known for his EDM anthem “Cannonball”, a track guaranteed to get fists in the air and bros on the dance floor. Sunday, March 16: Ellie Goulding. Echostage is killing it with the big names this month. “Under The Sheets”, “Lights”, “Burn” “I Need Your Love”, “Hanging On” all nice tracks. So many of Goulding’s songs have been the source material for incredible remixes. Check out Notixx’s remix of “Burn”,

Friday, March 21: Dash Berlin. Dutch trance project Dash Berlin makes their way back to Echostage. Saturday, March 22: Excision. The Excision Tour (Mega DC) w/Dirtyphonics & Ill Gates. Canadian dubstep producer and DJ Excision loves his bass music. Expect plenty on March 22. Friday, March 28: Above & Beyond. English trance music legends Jono, Tony, and Paavo on their sophomore outing to Echostage. After a hugely successful August debut, Above & Beyond are back. Saturday March 29: Bingo Players. Bingo Players’ melody focused prog house stood out in the sea of EDM aggression addicted to clobbering breakdowns. The loss of one-half of the duo, after Paul Baümer’s death last year, was a big blow to the dance music community. The music though, as always, lives on. █

Fall Crazy in Love with

Irene Diaz

By: Darlene Campos

ew music is made every day by talented performers whose only wish is to get their music heard. Irene Diaz is among these artists and she recently earned a spot on Alt.Latino’s “Favorite Songs, Albums And Artists Of 2013” for her EP, “I Love You Madly”.

NPR’s own Don Gonyea told Diaz, “anyone who hears your voice will wonder where you have been all this time.” With this much talent paired with prestigious recognition, Diaz is destined to climb the ladder of success.

Although, fairly new to the music scene, Irene has been playing music since she was 15 and has quickly touched the heartstrings of numerous entertainment publications most notably, NPR. In the spring of 2012, Diaz’s song “I Love You Madly” was heard by NPR’s Jasmine Garsd who was blown away by Irene’s soulful voice, “you can’t fake the soul, Irene is so believable in her emotion.”

A Los Angeles native, Irene Diaz officially launched her music career in 2011. She stated in an interview with Al Dia news, that while she was enrolled in college she was undecided on what she wanted to pursue, and ultimately realized she just wanted to be a musician. Her first performances took place at coffee shops but soon, this began to change. Her talent moved her out of the coffee shop scene rather quickly and soon she was holding performances at Room 5 and even the House of Blues in Hollywood.

Many news publications followed including Futuro Media Group, Austin Vida, Vents, and Hollywood Progressive. Even

Production of Diaz’s first EP titled, I Love You Madly started in the fall of 2012 and was independently funded by

her fans via the website Kickstarter. Over $10,000 dollars were donated to aid in the production costs. Aside from the EP, Diaz was also able to film a music video for her song “Crazy Love,” as well as, travel to the East Coast for a brief tour and an appearance at the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) that left new fans along the way. Felix Contreras of NPR mentioned in his segment “The LAMC 2013: Who Rocked, Who Shocked, Who Killed,” that his colleague Jasmine Garsd and himself were utterly amazed to hear Diaz sing an a capella version of “Crazy Love”. Contreras went on to plead with others to listen to Diaz’s voice. The I Love You Madly EP was released on July 31st 2013. In the following month, Diaz was interviewed by Don Gonyea of NPR in a piece that received national attention. Early reviews of the I Love You Madly EP have been solid, one written by Patrick O’Heffernan of Vents

magazine stated that the EP was, “classical American soul and blues and elevates it to a whole new level for today’s audience.” O’Heffernan also hinted that Diaz could one day be as legendary as Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday and become a queen of the torch singers. In a recent interview, Irene shared that although she considers herself Latina, she wouldn’t necessarily call her music Latin, “I write about love, and I hope that goes beyond any stereotypes. It’s something that everyone can relate to.” Stay tuned to the Kestadc.com/blog for a full interview with this talented up-andcomer. J ALVAREZ’S DE CAMINO PA’ LA CIMA HAS ARRIVED By: Sarah Barrie

After months of hype and promotion, Puerto Rican reggaetonero, “El Dueño del Sistema”, J Alvarez released his much-anticipated album, De Camino Pa’ La Cima on February 18, 2014. De Camino Pa’ La Cima, released under the On Top Of The World Music label, and distributed by Sony Music Entertainment, is complete with 13 new tracks, and while primarily a reggaeton album, it also dabbles in other genres, such as electro-Latino. Although many of the albums tracks are comparable in style and sound to his previous work, there are a few songs that really stand out. “La Temperatura” falls more into the tropical/electro Latino genre with an upbeat tempo similar to Juan Magan’s style. It has a rhythm that makes you just want to get up and dance, and I could see this song easily incorporated into a Zumba routine, as it is much faster than other J Alvarez songs. “El Duelo” is another track that’s worth a listen. It’s currently the #1 most downloaded track from the album, and has a catchy beat that I could see quickly becoming a chart topper. “Hablame de Ti” is another noticeably great track, that I predict will reach success. “Cómo Explicarte,” one of my favorite tracks on the album, falls more into the reggaeton romantico category, with a slower romantic melody that tells the story of love and longing. Whether you are looking for something more romantic, upbeat, or a good perreo track, De Camino Pa’ La Cima seems to have something to offer everyone. █

AJ DAVILA: TERROR/AMOR By: Juan Leon

Terror/Amor shoots for the heart. The (for my money) mostly played out scuzz/fuzz/lo-fi posturing of way too many indie bands is transformed by the vitality, energy, and sincerity of Puerto Rican AJ Davila (also the frontman for the popular garage rock band, Davila 666). Terror/Amor sounds like something that would come out of the world of Rodrigo D: No Futuro without the dreariness of that film. Avoiding the trap of out of touch self-absorption too common in indie-land, Terror/Amor is bolstered by Davila authentically drawing on his legendary influences (The Jesus and Mary Chain, Los Prisioneros, New Order) and a direct, potent focus on eternal themes. Featuring collaborations with Cole Alexander (Black Lips), up and comer Alex Anwandter, and Sergio Roman (Los Fabulosos Cadillacs), it’s no wonder Terror/Amor has been tapped one of the most anticipated albums of 2014 by CMJ. With melody at the forefront of each song, Terror/Amor drives swiftly from track to track, workmanlike and pure. The excitement and energy of punk— traduced almost to mere posturing by now — sounds fresh sung in Spanish. Davila turns scuzz into melody, future into hope. █

J ALVAREZ LIGHTS UP THE STAGE AT COCOCABANA By: Malayna Butler

Everyone wanted to get a glimpse of Javid David Álvarez Fernández the night of Saturday, Feb 1 at Cococabana Nightclub in Hyattsville, Maryland. Lines nearly wrapped around the parking lot, which was filled over capacity. Inside, the show was packed and J Alvarez (AKA “El Dueño del Sistema”) didn’t let us down. I gave up on getting close to the stage since I had come a bit late and there was no way to part that crowd. He opened up with “El Duelo”, then took us on a journey with “El Amante” recorded with Daddy Yankee and later tempted us with “Sexo, Sudor y Calor” a track with Ñejo and Dalmata. Also on the menu were “Se Acabó el Amor”, “Hoy” a duo with Farruko and “La Pregunta”. Popular sing-alongs among the audience were “Junto Al Amanecer” and “Regalame Una Noche” which was recorded with Arcangel. J Alvarez did a spinoff of Drake’s “Started from the Bottom” (“Empezamos Desde Abajo y Ahora Estamos Aquí’). The artist from Río Piedras, Puerto Rico who was dressed in black and gold isn’t shy about interacting with fans. There was a part of the show in which he asked everyone to hold up their cameras and in unison “Flash! Flash! Flash!” and people clicked along with the music. As I’ve witnessed on a couple of occasions, he is notorious for taking pics of himself onstage. These infamous “selfies” will serve as memorabilia for fans to hold on for a lifetime. He even takes videos up close using the phones of concertgoers, which inevitably tickles them to death. After counting down from 10, he was gone in a flash – pun intended. █

COSCULLUELA TAKES FLIGHT AT COCOCABANA By; Malayna Butler

Concertgoers were advised to arrive early to see Cosculluela perform live at Cococabana night club in Hyattsville, MD on Friday, February 7. If you weren’t already in the disco at 12 am you would be obliged to make up for your tardiness out of pocket since the concert was gratis up until then. The place became packed as people staggered in from the cold. For the first few hours the audience waited patiently as bachata, reggaeton and hip-hop kept us company while Juan Cruz, Will “AKA Your Host”, and the DJs kept us energetic. Everyone enjoyed Esko Entertainment’s pre-show festivities but when it was time for “El Principe” to come onstage, everyone wanted to get as close to the stage as possible. Coscu arrived draped in a black and red Air Jordan sweatshirt tagged with the line “Flight”, black sweatpants and a hefty gold chain around his neck, a thick gold bracelet and red sneakers to topped it all off. He was clean from head to toe. Cosculluela hadn’t made it through the first song, “Rompan Fila” yet when the excitement and alcohol overtook a man who became rowdy and overly hyped near the stage. Although security was in place and prepared to cut this borracho’s night short, Cosculluela intervened and proved himself to be real, addressing the man directly by telling him to chill out and even bringing him onstage to calm him down. This surprised everyone and although the man was pardoned, Coscu made it clear that he would settle him down himself if need be. The party resumed with “Humo”, “Santa Cos”, “Prummm”, “Somos de Calle”, “Blan Blan”, “Blaka Blaka”, “Cuidau Au Au”, “No Necesito (Sigo Esperando Por Ti)”, “Sube y Baja” , “Na Na Nau”. The rest of the night went on without a hitch and once the evening’s pilot, Cosculluela was gone and we landed back into reality. █

“There is a woman I have liked for a long time. We started out fine, hanging out, always on the phone talking to each other and if she had a problem, I was there to help her get through it. She is a single mother, and recently she started going through a lot at work and at home. She started taking her frustrations out on me, ignoring my texts and catching an attitude with me. Recently, I lost my temper in a text and told her it wasn’t right for her to treat me like this (plus or minus a few curse words). She texted back that she was ‘sorry’, but my question is, what can I say to her to get us back to where we used to be, texting, talking and more?” Arrepentido in Washington, DC

Dear Arrepentido: It’s clear that your feelings were really hurt when she stopped responding to you and you reacted by being rude to someone you really like. Having intense emotional exchanges over text is never a good idea. You’d be surprised at how many misunderstandings can happen over text or email where you can’t hear someone’s tone and can end up making a lot of assumptions. And once your harsh words have been written and sent they can be read over and over again and continue doing damage! It sounds like all this time you’ve really been there for her while (secretly?) hoping for the relationship to become more than what it is. It’s unclear how reciprocal the relationship has been, and whether in the past she’s expressed interest in being more than friends. The only way to find out is by having an open and honest conversation with her. Ideally face to face, but definitely not via text message! If you do want more out of this relationship, you’ll have to risk putting yourself out there and letting her know how you feel. It’s not easy, you will feel vulnerable, but being honest about your feelings is the only way to truly connect with someone. And the worst that could happen is that you find out that she doesn’t want the same thing as you and then you’ll know where you stand and won’t waste any more time on someone who is not romantically interested in you. Either way you win, and you’ll be the honest guy who isn’t playing games (which can be very refreshing in the current dating scene). If I misunderstood and you’re simply interested in getting her back to “talking” with no plan of pursuing anything beyond that, then be prepared for the alternate scenario, which is that she is a single mom with a lot on her plate who may have lost interest in continuing in a relationship that is going nowhere. █
