PBS DIGITAL INNOVATOR USES TECHNOLOGY TO TEACH 21ST CENTURY SKILLS

IRST GRADERS ARE EAGER, they’re charming, and they’re a handful. Give them a song, they’ll sing it; give them a phonics lesson, and they’ll chant it. And put them in front of a camera, and — at least in Ashley Judd’s Jackson County classroom — they’ll take you to Disney World, Texas, and San Francisco. “If you make the lesson something that is hands-on, then the material you’re trying to teach them is going to be memorable as well,” said Judd, a first-grade teacher at Tyner Elementary School and Kentucky’s 2017 PBS Digital Innovator. She and others like her around the country were honored earlier this year by PBS for innovative use of technology in the classroom. One morning last May, on one of the last days of the school year, Judd’s classroom buzzed with cowboys and princesses, all eager to create videos to tell about vacation possibilities for the upcoming summer break. Such videos, says Judd, give students the opportunity to use a variety of skills, such as research. So, the cowboys read up on attractions in Texas including Space Center Houston, the Alamo, and longhorn cattle. Public speaking skills were in evidence as well for the “program host” and reporters who discussed the fireworks and the castle at Disney World. In another project, creating a stop-motion animated movie using Legos, involved numerous pre-production skills, such as writing a draft, small-group dynamics, and final proofing. When the video was made, the kids learned green-screen technology (which allows different backgrounds to be Cody Smith displayed) as well as the basics of stop-moAshley Judd tion animation. 2

“I want to give my students memorable experiences. “Now, I am teaching in an age that is immersed in technology. Ultimately, I’m preparing these kids to go out into the world and become successful adults. And, in order to do that, they have to be able to use technology.” As a PBS Digital Innovator, Judd becomes a member of a professional development community of highly engaged PreK-12 educators. These teachers use digital media in innovative ways to create exciting learning experiences for their students, and through networking and conferences sponsored by PBS, they widen their

students no matter what their style of learning. And KET, Kentucky’s largest statewide classroom, is replete with resources to help teachers like Ashley accomplish that goal. “At the beginning of each week, I look at my curriculum and I immediately go to KET and PBS resources to look for digital media that supports the lessons I’m going to be bringing that week,” she said. “It’s just a rule of thumb for me that, if I’m going to teach something, I’m going to find some kind of digital format to present it, because kids learn in different

And, in order to do that, they have to be able to use technology.” horizons even further, sharing what each knows with colleagues throughout the nation. In Judd’s case, she’ll bring what she learns back home to Jackson County, where she already is part of a network of tech-savvy teachers with similar goals of creating fresh opportunities for their students. “I was selected as a PBS Digital Innovator, but I work with colleagues that are doing the same great things in their classrooms. They are always looking for ways to better their students. We get together and talk about these resources that we’ve found, share them, and take them back to our classrooms.” Beyond offering students familiarity with computers, hand-held devices, and other media, using technology offers Judd engaging ways to instruct

ways. I want to make sure I’m hitting all my learners.” As a teacher in a county struggling with poverty, Judd says she wants to give her students as many opportunities as she can to use technology. She knows technical competency is becoming increasingly necessary. “Many of my students have technologies at home, but there are a lot of our students who do not. I feel like if we can expose them to technology, we can be ‘chainbreakers.’ They don’t have to live in poverty,” she said. “They can decide for themselves to make goals, to pursue college and education,” she added. “And, in order to be successful, they’re going to have to have a foundation in technology.”

Today’s KET: A proven classroom partner

B

ack-to-school time is always a particularly exciting time here at KET. While we are dedicated to providing the kinds of programs that allow everyone to be lifelong learners, serving the particular needs of children and educators remains a pillar of our mission. Our staff of teachers, content producers, and in-the-field education consultants are committed to ensuring educators like Ashley Judd have the high-quality tools and resources they need to bring learning to life every day. Classrooms have changed considerably in just the last decade as computers and iPads have become an ever-more integral part of instruction. But these are just devices. It’s the content a teacher chooses — to demonstrate a concept, to engage student involvement, to appeal to varying learning styles — that ultimately makes technology effective and enhances learning. From being a leading content producer for PBS LearningMedia to providing entire distance learning courses through our Online Campus, KET ensures schools throughout Kentucky have equal access to proven, dynamic content and classroom instruction. Whether you have children or grandchildren currently in school, or are simply curious about what we do as a trusted partner in education, I invite you to check out our many highly utilized educational services at KET.org/education. And to all the educators across the state about to embark on another exciting school year, we thank you and wish you all the best. Sincerely,

Shae Hopkins

UNPRECEDENTED PROGRAM TRACKS TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE ON AUGUST 21 4

VISION S

|

A UG U S T 2017

n Monday, Aug. 21, a dramatic celestial event will captivate the entire country, treating us to the first total solar eclipse since 1979 — and the first to cross the United States since 1918. After experiencing the stunning vision of the sun being blocked by the full moon — and the twilight darkness, where stars and three planets will be visible — tune in for stories and footage captured by Nova and KET during the spectacular event in “Eclipse Over America.” This extraordinary cosmic spectacle will pass through 13 states — including Kentucky. Just outside of Hopkinsville lies the point of greatest eclipse — where the axis of the moon’s shadow cone passes closest to Earth’s center. KET is collaborating with Nova to provide footage from this point near Hopkinsville, as well as shots of Louisville’s Churchill Downs. These will be edited into the final program, which will also include video captured by other public television stations nationwide. KET also will provide an exciting special edition of our educational current-events series for elementary school children, News Quiz. The eclipse begins that morning; the lunar shadow measuring 73 miles wide then takes one hour and 33 minutes to travel from Oregon to South Carolina. In Hopkinsville, the total eclipse will occur at 1:24 pm Central Time and last for two minutes and 40 seconds. Everyone in the continental U.S. will have the opportunity to see at least a partial eclipse, making it the most widely viewed American eclipse of all time. Nova’s most extensive, fast-turnaround film to date, “Eclipse Over America” is your ultimate companion to this spectacular event. You’ll hear from teams working on the forefront of solar science and solar storm detection, see immersive CGI animation revealing the sun’s elusive mechanisms, watch stunning sequences of the eclipse itself, see NASA footage, and much more!

Marion Miley honored by the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame Golfer Marion Miley, the subject of the recent KET documentary Forgotten Fame: The Marion Miley Story, was among eight sports figures recently inducted into the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame class of 2017. The best female golfer in America from 1936-41, Miley won numerous amateur championships in the years before the formation of the LPGA Tour. Miley became one of the best and most famous female athletes in the 1930s, but in 1941, at the age of 27, she was murdered in an apartment at Lexington Country Club during a robbery attempt. She is still remembered as a pioneer in women’s sports whose legacy of courage and achievement paved the way for future generations. Jim Ellis, president of the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame, says Miley had been considered in the past for induction, but not much was known about her. After viewing Forgotten Fame, board members were enthusiastic about including her. “KET’s piece really put before us that she was the tremendous golfer that she was,” he said. “It was certainly instrumental in her selection this year.” The Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes athletes and sports figures who were born in, or played their respective sport, in the state of Kentucky. Past inductees include Muhammad Ali, Pee Wee Reese, Adolph Rupp, Paul Hornung, Pat Day, Denny Crum, Joe B. Hall, Secretariat, Mary T. Meagher, and Johnny Unitas.

Golfer Myra Blackwelder, left, an Athletic Hall of Fame inductee in 2006, accepted Marion Miley’s induction into the hall of fame this year on the late golfer’s behalf. Celebrating with her are Rusty Cheuvront, chairman of the Kentucky Authority for Educational Television, and Shae Hopkins, KET executive director. 20 VISION S

Participant at the Pine Mountain Settlement School Odd Squad camp.

Odd Squad ‘Be the Agent’ camps reach children in Harlan and Louisville In June, KET partnered with Pine Mountain Settlement School to offer an Odd Squad “Be the Agent” camp to local children as part of their annual day camp. The camp was offered again in July at the Louisville Central Community Center for children enrolled in their summer program. Funded by Ready to Learn grants awarded to PBS stations, the camps provide classroom materials, technology, and PBS KIDS media in support of science skills for young learners. Campers spent five days as Odd Squad agents, solving cases and creating gadgets by using teamwork, math knowledge, science inquiry practices, the engineering design process, and creative thinking. By the end of each week, participants solved up to 10 cases, engineered several gadgets, and spent lots of time having fun as a group!

MORE TO EXPLORE

EDUCATION Examine the history, future of education in the United States Once the envy of the world, the American educational system produced an unmatched workforce tailored for the 20th century. But as the global economy has shifted over the past 20 years, has the United States clung to an obsolete education model with an emphasis on “teaching to the test,” thus leaving our students unprepared for 21stcentury employment?

economist Andrew McAfee, director of digital business at MIT, who provides thoughtful analysis throughout the film. “As we head deeper into the 21st century,” says McAfee, “I really don’t think that’s the case anymore, yet our educational system still seems to be focused on turning out people with that relatively small set of skills.”

‘Education Matters’ delves into innovation and technology

The new feature-length documentary Most Likely to Succeed, which premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, examines the potential shortcomings of conventional education methods in today’s changing world. The film also explores an exciting new approach that promotes so-called “soft skills,” which many believe are more important in today’s workplace than the “Three R’s.” “The economy we created over the course of the 20th century was an economy that needed a large number of moderately skilled people who could do the ‘Three R’s’ and who could follow pretty simple instructions,” says

Join us for a new edition of Education Matters, which this month focuses on successful innovation and technology programs in Kentucky high schools. Guests on the panel discussion, hosted by KET’s Renee Shaw, are Secretary Hal Heiner, Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet; Kentucky Commissioner of Education Stephen Pruitt; and Beth Benjamin, director of the Owensboro Innovation Academy. The program includes a segment taped at iLEAD Academy in Carrollton. Students from five counties — Carroll, Gallatin, Henry, Owen, and Trimble — attend this non-traditional, career-focused academy that emphasizes project-based instruction in science, technology, engineering, and math.
