ITH THE PANDEMIC causing families to spend more time at home, it stands to reason their collective TV watching has gone up. For a mother of five children, that normally might be a concern. But Kendra Thacker-Dickinson, whose children range in age from five to 16, says she feels a whole a lot better about it thanks to PBS KIDS. “My husband and I don’t have a problem with our children watching TV, but we do take care to monitor what they watch,” Thacker-Dickinson said. “When they’re watching PBS KIDS, we know they’re watching a good program that doesn’t have anything vulgar. And the shows are not only educational but also a lot of fun.” Her household got rid of cable years ago, instead opting to watch television through YouTube TV. And Thacker-Dickinson said she was thrilled to discover the subscription service carries KET and PBS KIDS, both staples in her family before they cut the cord. “KET has been in our household for a really long time,” Thacker-Dickinson said. “My eldest child got hooked on Arthur as a toddler. And when her siblings came along, they all of course wanted to do what their big sister was doing, so they all got hooked too.” Thacker-Dickinson said she grew up watching Sesame Street. And she credits the program for teaching her letters and numbers, something today’s programs

continue to make a focal point. These days, her younger children gravitate to Arthur and Super WHY! as well as Dinosaur Train and Curious George. And she and all her children will often pile onto her bed to watch together. “The great thing about the PBS KIDS programs is that my kids learn without really realizing that they’re learning,” Thacker-Dickinson said. “It makes me laugh, but it makes sense. If you were a child, who would you rather have trying to get you to read, write and spell — me or a cartoon character who’s also a lot of fun?” Thacker-Dickinson, who works as a financial service representative for Commonwealth Credit Union in Frankfort, said KET’s children’s programs have helped plant a love of learning in her children early on — something that paid dividends when they entered their school years. “Just the fact that my kids learned so much before they went to kindergarten — they could read books, spell their names and knew all their letters — that gave them such a great start,” she said. “And my kids all ended up really liking school, so I do think it contributed to that.” She said she also appreciates how these programs celebrate diversity, showing characters of all different stripes and colors, and feature storylines that touch on aspects of emotional development. A recent Arthur episode, for instance, featured an angry bully, prompting the other characters

“Just the fact that my kids had learned so much before they went to kindergarten — they could read books, spell their names and knew all their letters — that gave them such a great start.” to consider how they might work together to best resolve the problem amicably. “My kids are very emotional,” Thacker-Dickinson said. “So it’s nice that the shows teach them how to be friends with someone or how to react when someone’s not nice to you. My kids take it all in. They’re learning how to develop relationships. And it gives them a sense for how you’re supposed to treat other people and how you can relate to them.” Thacker-Dickinson’s household is a musical one — every child either sings, dances or plays an instrument. And that means a lot of the PBS KIDS songs get sung on repeat around the house, even by her youngest child, five-year-old Johnathan. “Sometimes they even catch on to what’s happening; they’ll pause and go ‘Oh, we’re learning.’” she said. “But they don’t mind because they’re having fun.”

KET is proud of its more than 50 years of providing educational programs for children, from the debut of Sesame Street and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood in the late 1960s, to today’s many popular series. Preparing our children for success in kindergarten is essential to helping ensure they succeed throughout their school years and beyond. Data indicates, however, that nearly half of Kentucky’s children enter kindergarten underprepared, and the figures are worse for children living in poverty. To help reduce this gap in kindergarten-readiness, today KET provides more early childhood resources than ever before. Parents, grandparents and caregivers can rely on the proven, research-based children’s programming available every day on KET and the 24/7 KET PBS KIDS channel as well as numerous related digital resources. As a national Ready to Learn partner, we’ve developed hundreds of free learning resources used in Kentucky and the nation, and directly connect with parents and children through hands-on community workshops. Our Everyday Learning tools make it easy to help teach fundamental concepts through fun activities using common household items. KET also provides required and enhanced training for daycare workers and preschool teachers through our online courses. All told, KET develops and delivers thousands of resources with one goal — helping today’s children prepare for tomorrow’s opportunities. Sincerely,

Shae Hopkins

Signifying OUR PAST The story of human history is

often a surprising tale of resilience. Which may explain why it continues to capture our imagination and propel our instinct for exploration. This month, KET is pleased to present two programs – Finding Your Roots and The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song – that continue in that spirit, throwing light on our past. At the center of both, guiding every discovery, is host and executive producer Henry Louis Gates, Jr. An Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and literary historian, Gates has devoted much of the past decade to the use of genetic genealogy to help unearth and untangle people’s origin stories. In the process, he’s helped spur a national surge in the use of DNA as a means of discovering one’s personal history. His popular series Finding Your Roots, now in its seventh season, employs this cutting-edge research along with some old-school genealogical sleuthing to help some of the nation’s most wellknown personalities explore their families’ stories. Those taking part this season include comedian Jim Gaffigan; actors Glenn Close, Jane Lynch and Tony Shalhoub; musicians Clint Black, Rosanne Cash and Pharrell Williams; and filmmakers Kasi Lemmons and John Waters.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Later this month, Gates returns with another journey into history with The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song, a two-part documentary that traces the 400-year-old story of the Black church in America. The film reveals how Black people have worshipped and, through their spiritual journeys, improvised ways to bring their faith traditions from Africa to the New World, while translating them into a form of Christianity that was not only truly their own, but a redemptive force for a nation scarred by the wound of slavery. Written, produced and hosted by Gates, the film features interviews with an array of Black voices, including Oprah Winfrey, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, gospel legend Yolanda Adams and scholar Cornel West. It’s an experience, says Paula Kerger, president and CEO of PBS, that “deepens understanding, fosters conversation and so beautifully connects our country’s past to our present.” Finding Your Roots KET Tuesdays • 8/7 pm The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song

New online series teaches students about civics

Students explore media production in virtual workshops

KET has created a new digital resource to help students with their civics education. Social Studies Shorts, narrated by News Quiz host Kelsey Starks, introduces students in grades 4-8 to key social studies and civics topics. Episodes cover topics such as presidential inaugurations, the Kentucky General Assembly, branches of government and how a bill becomes a law. New topics will be added each month through May, and can be found in the News Quiz collection on PBS LearningMedia.

KET’s Media Workshops are being offered virtually to give students a primer on media production. Designed to teach the fundamentals of multimedia editing, the workshops cover a wide variety of digital applications, such as GarageBand, Photoshop, Scratch Jr. and iMovie. New courses include 3-D design, media literacy and digital photography. For more information, visit KET.org/medialab.

KET and Kentucky Department of Education to pilot service for at-home learners KET and the Kentucky Department of Education are implementing a pilot project to deliver instructional content to the homes of students who don’t have access to reliable broadband service. The extended home learning brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the challenges of providing and receiving instructional materials to the homes of students, a need that is also prevalent during weather-based and other closures. Utilizing datacasting technologies on KET’s broadcast network, students in homes outfitted with specialized receivers will be able to access classroom content — such as worksheets, presentations, tests, images and even video — that is uploaded by their teachers. KET is joining public broadcasters in South Carolina, Indiana, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and others in utilizing this technology to support student learning.
