BORN REIGN to
‘Masterpiece’ tells the story of the most powerful woman the world has ever known
Immerse yourself in the life of Great Britain’s seminal queen in the spectacular new Masterpiece series “Victoria.” Famous for her candor and spirit, Victoria was the first woman who seemed to have it all: a passionate marriage, nine children, and the job of being queen of the world’s most important nation. Her oftentumultuous reign lasted for 63 years. Beginning at the time she takes the throne in 1837 at the age of 18, and continuing throughout her long reign, the series stars Jenna Coleman of Doctor Who fame as as the young queen Victoria.

JA NUA RY 2017
The series details her relationship with Lord Melbourne, her first prime minister and intimate friend, and her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert, as well as her education in politics — painting a portrait of a monarch who was raised to be the pawn of her powerful elders but who wasted no time in showing the empire who was in charge. The stellar cast also includes Rufus Sewell (The Man in the High Castle) as Melbourne, Victoria’s father figure and intimate friend, and Tom Hughes (Dancing on the Edge) as the handsome, brilliant, and awkward Albert, who stole Victoria’s heart after a rocky start.
PLUS
SHERLOCK’S BACK NEW DRAMAS INCLUDE ‘SHERLOCK,’ ‘MERCY STREET,’ NEW SERIES ‘THE CORONER’ As if “Victoria” weren’t enough — January premieres three more highly anticipated series, beginning with the long-awaited return of Benedict Cumberbatch in a new season of Sherlock. In “The Six Thatchers,” we find the mercurial Holmes back on British soil, while Dr. Watson and his wife await impending parenthood. Mercy Street, the drama based on true stories of the Civil War home front, returns for its second season. Set in the occupied city of Alexandria, Va., the story picks up from the dramatic events at the end of the first season
finale, continuing to explore life in the chaotic city of Alexandria, the complicated interpersonal dynamics of the Mansion House staff, the precarious position of the Green family, and the changing world of the burgeoning black population. Return to the present day with The Coroner, which features former high-flying lawyer Jane Kennedy who returns to the British coastal town she left as a teenager to take the job of local coroner. She finds herself working with an old flame who broke her heart, now a police detective, to investigate local deaths.

Great Conversations: Colson Whitehead and Isaac Fitzgerald KET Monday, Jan. 16 • 8/7 pm KET2 Sunday, Jan. 22 • 6/5 pm Bestselling author Colson Whitehead, a Harvard graduate, teacher, and National Book Award Winner, and Isaac Fitzgerald, an author and editor of BuzzFeed Books, discuss Whitehead’s evolving writing process, his historical and literary influences, and his groundbreaking new novel, The Underground Railroad. The book is a New York Times bestseller, a selection of Oprah’s Book Club 2.0, and one of President Barack Obama’s five summer vacation reading-list books — and appears on most critics’ lists of the best books of 2016.
17 Frontline: Divided States of America KET Tues. & Wed., Jan. 17 & 18 • 9/8 pm This four-hour, two-night documentary looks back at events during the Obama presidency that have revealed deep divisions in our country, and examines the America the next president will inherit. It offers an in-depth view of the partisanship that gridlocked Washington and charged the 2016 presidential campaign, the rise of populist anger on both sides of the aisle, and the racial tensions that have erupted throughout the country.
22 Secrets of the Six Wives KET Begins Sunday, Jan. 22 • 10/9 pm KET2 Begins Wednesday, Jan. 25 • 10/9 pm Travel with historian Lucy Worsley back to the Tudor court to witness some of the most dramatic moments in the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives. While it was a world run by men, and the king had ultimate power, each queen (and their ladies in waiting) found her own unique method of exerting influence. It is these women’s stories that Lucy uncovers and explores beginning with the marriage of Henry VIII to his first wife, Katherine of Aragon.
24 Rachel Carson: An Environmental Revolutionary KET Tuesday, Jan. 24 • 8/7 pm KET2 Sunday, Jan. 15 • 9/8 pm Her seminal 1962 work, Silent Spring, warned of the long-term dangers of pesticides, sparking a nationwide debate and effectively launching the modern environmental movement. Learn her story in this new biography of the enigmatic writer and scientist who challenged us to think about our impact on the world around us.
30 POV: Seven Songs for a Long Life KET Monday, Jan. 30 • 10/9 pm From the moment Tosh refuses to fill in his assessment form and serenades us with a remarkably good Sinatra song, this documentary grabs life through song. Six hospice patients allow us into tender, vulnerable, and funny moments of their lives. Singing unlocks the patients’ pasts and guides their dreams and their futures. Hospice care is rarely associated with singing and laughter, but at Strathcarron it’s different. At this remarkable Scottish hospice center, patients face pain, uncertainty, and the possibility of life’s end with song and humor.

Calling classroom ‘changemakers:’ Are you a PBS Digital Innovator? PBS is looking for educators who love what they do — and who have found creative and thoughtful ways to integrate technology and digital media into their instruction — for its annual Digital Innovators program. These educators set the bar for thoughtful tech integration in K-12 classrooms. Their bold and enthusiastic perspective sets them apart as “changemakers” and unlocks new worlds for their students. Those selected as PBS Digital Innovators receive ongoing professional development, opportunities to share their ideas in national settings, and an all-expense paid trip to San Antonio for the annual PBS Digital Innovators Summit and the International Society of Technology in Education conference. PBS Digital Innovator applications are now online at pbs.org/education/digitalinnovators. The deadline for submission is Feb. 13.

Kentucky design featured in WPA-era artistic index Explore our state’s contributions to The Index of American Design in the new KET Kentucky Muse production “Kentucky by Design,” premiering Monday, Jan. 30 at 9:30/8:30 pm on KET. The index was a pictorial survey begun in 1935 as part of a Federal Art Project work relief program by President Franklin Roosevelt. Its purpose was to document what was uniquely American about utilitarian art in this country. It served to give artists employment in the dark days of the Depression, but the index itself was never published. Artists created artistic renderings to document everyday objects such as toys, rugs, and quilts — and in Kentucky, a careful examination of Shaker materials. The project looks at Kentucky’s role in the index project and shows many of the objects and artist renderings on display at the Frazier Historical Museum in Louisville.

Pediatricians recommend PBS KIDS
F
rom television and tablets to laptops and smart phones, children today have access to many screens. Parents and grandparents wonder: what is appropriate and best for children? New recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) place greater emphasis on the quality of the media kids interact with, rather than the quantity, and point to PBS KIDS as a leading resource for educational programming. The new guidelines also encourage parents to watch with their children and talk about it together. The AAP notes that “well-designed television programs, such as Sesame Street, can improve cognitive, literacy, and social outcomes for children 3 to 5 years of age.” The report goes on to say that “evaluations of apps from Sesame Workshop and the Public Broadcasting Service have also shown efficacy in teaching literacy skills to preschoolers.” We believe PBS KIDS programming is especially important given the data from the Kentucky Department of Education indicating that more than 50 percent of the children in our state aren’t prepared to enter kindergarten. Thank you for supporting PBS KIDS programming on KET. Together, we can help unlock every child’s learning potential and help them to be better prepared for kindergarten and life. Sincerely,
