DOING WHAT Adult students in Laurel County thrive with help of KET’s FastForward

“A lot of people refer to adult ed as a second chance,” observes Kathryn Hardman. “But I think for an awful lot of our students, it’s their first chance.” A 30-year veteran of adult education, Hardman, who recently served as the director of Laurel County’s Adult Education Center, gets emotional when discussing the challenges faced by students — and the work they put in to better themselves by studying for and passing the GED® exam. “What brings them in?” asks Hardman. “Children they want to set a good example for or an opportunity they don’t want to miss out on. And also, they’ve always felt deficient, or ‘less than.’ They want that validation.” Each student who enters the London center is immediately given an account with FastForward, KET’s online GED preperation learning system. In addition to several other benefits, it offers students anytime access to study materials on a desktop computer or smartphone. “FastForward offers a lot of flexibility, and we use it for all four subject areas [of the test,]” said Hardman. “Our students have very fractured lives: their responsibilities, their transportation, so many things. FastForward has that 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week availability.” Such flexibility is beneficial to students and staff, she notes. With it, students can learn at their own pace,

KET’s FastForward continues a more than 40-year legacy of providing resources to help adult learners earn their high school equivalency so they can continue their education or advance their careers. KET’s first GED series began national distribution in 1975. With each subsequent change of the test, KET responded, launching new series and corresponding materials in 1985 and again in 2002. Most recently, in 2014, with the announcement of a new GED test that would be administered online, KET developed our most-advanced, multiplatform learning system to date. Independent research has confirmed the effectiveness of FastForward, with a 90% pass rate for students taking the GED test. Today, we continue our long-standing commitment to serving adult learners. Development is currently underway for a new Workplace Essential Skills and a series of career-pathway videos. In addition to our many high-quality early childhood and K-12 resources, as well as programs that inform and inspire viewers of all ages, KET proudly brings learning to life for all Kentuckians.

Sincerely,

Shae Hopkins

4 A Capitol Fourth KET Wednesday, July 4 • 8/7 pm & 9:30/8:30 pm Celebrate Independence Day with the Beach Boys, Jimmy Buffet, Pentatonix, and more. This all-star musical extravaganza, broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, is hosted by John Stamos and gives you a front-and-center view of the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation. The program is also carried by the American Forces Network and broadcast to troops around the world.

9 Hillary KET2 Begins Monday, July 9 • 9/8 pm This six-part series stars New Zealand’s Andrew Munro as his countryman Sir Edmund Hillary who, along with Sherpa climber Tenzing Norgay, became the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest. But there is much more to his 88 years of life than the events of May 29, 1953. The series covers not only his greatest achievements but also his inspiring life story. From a lonely childhood, finding love and then the loss of a wife and child, there is far more to Hillary’s story than conquering Mount Everest and crossing Antarctica.

20 American Masters: Patsy Cline KET Friday, July 20 • 10/9 pm Born Virginia Patterson Hensley in Winchester, Va., she defined modern country music by using her singular talent and heart-wrenching emotional depth to break down barriers of gender, class and genre. In her music and her life, she set a standard of authenticity toward which artists still strive. After years of hard work to overcome industry gender biases and her own personal hardships and professional missteps, she achieved success, only to have it punctured by uncanny premonitions and her untimely death at age 30.

23 American Masters: Ted Williams KET Monday, July 23 • 9/8 pm To fans, the Boston Red Sox player was baseball’s Peter Pan: the eternal “Kid” who combined preternatural gifts with a fierce work ethic to become one of the greatest hitters who ever lived. Serving as a flight instructor in World War II and a decorated combat pilot in the Korean War, Williams was also a fly-fishing expert. Lesser known was how he was driven by shame over his Mexican-American background, humiliation over his father’s weakness and a deep rage over his mother’s virtual abandonment of him and his younger brother.

27 Paul Thorn’s Mission Temple Fireworks Revival KET Friday, July 27 • 10/9 pm Joined by his band, five-time Grammy winning artists the Blind Boys of Alabama, and veteran singing quartet the McCrary Sisters, Thorn orchestrates a powerful evening of curated gospel music. The celebration combines traditional African-American gospel styles, a huge influence in Thorn’s Pentecostal upbringing, and his well-known style of rocking roots music. Special guest appearances include New Orleans trombonist David L. Harris and rising Americana singer Bonnie Bishop.
