A place to call home PARKINSONS SAY KET, ARTS EDUCATION IS VITAL TO QUALITY OF LIFE IN KENTUCKY

hen Don and Libby Parkinson moved to Louisville 37 years ago, they came to stay. Don, a former auto executive in Detroit, took a job with YUM Brands at a time when the couple wanted to make a permanent home to raise their children. Having lived in locales as far-flung as San Francisco, Buffalo, and Florida, they remembered their two years in Lexington and wanted to return to the Bluegrass State. “We love Kentucky and we chose to come back,” said Don, now the secretary of the Kentucky Tourism, Arts, and Heritage Cabinet. “We like the quality of life, we like the beauty of the landscape, and the friendliness of the people. Louisville and the state are very welcoming to new people coming — so you get the opportunity to get involved very quickly,” he said. And get involved they have. Don, a long-time member of the boards of the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts and its endowment, also served two stints as its interim director. And Libby, an advocate of the Governor’s School for the Arts, founded the Commonwealth Fund for KET’s Louisville Board, an advocacy and fund-raising volunteer organization.

For their children, Libby said, the quality of life in the Commonwealth also played a role in returning to Kentucky. “They absolutely have loved growing up here. And our grandchildren would prefer coming here than going to many other places they have the opportunity to visit,” she said. “There’s just so many wonderful things to do, people are friendly, it’s a beautiful state — what’s not to love about Kentucky?” As the family became full-fledged Kentuckians, they frequently turned to KET for their viewing, recognizing its unique place in the heritage of the Commonwealth. “We enjoy several things about KET. When the children were younger it was Sesame Street all the way. And now we love many programs, like Doc Martin, Keeping Up Appearances, Mystery! and Masterpiece,” said Libby. “But then we love the local programs, programming that showcases the local things: the orchestra, the ballet, or something out in the state. So KET brings a lot of what’s innovating out in Kentucky to us,” she said. Further, her husband added, KET provides a unifying force which — through its diverse mix of history, heritage, and public-affairs programming — unites the state. “KET serves a very, very important role in the state. The state is a very large state, and it’s dominated by some outside television markets. People in Western Kentucky probably know more about Nashville than they do Pikeville,” he said. “But KET is the only organization that focuses only on Kentucky and brings people together so that they can understand everything that’s going on. It’s important communication. It’s

“KET is the only organization that focuses only on Kentucky and brings people together so that they can understand everything that’s going on. It’s important communication.” important for people in Eastern Kentucky to understand what’s happening in Western Kentucky, and vice versa.” And now, as Kentucky embarks upon a celebration of its 225th year of statehood, the Parkinsons say KET comes to the fore with another important role to play. “KET is recording the history of our state, and it has been doing that for some time,” Libby said. “And this month, KET is showcasing the history and the pride we have as Kentuckians.” Her husband agrees. “Art and heritage is so very important to building quality of life. We are seeing improvement in employment and economic development, but it’s not enough just to have economic development. You’ve got to have cultural development, too,” he said. “We need to understand, participate, and appreciate the arts to lead a fuller and more satisfying life. That’s what we are about at the cabinet, and here at KET: to offer new ideas and opportunities in arts and culture that might not otherwise be available to you.”

Sharing Kentucky’s story

T

his month, for Kentucky’s 225th celebration, KET presents a special lineup of programs from our archives showcasing the Commonwealth’s rich history and heritage. As part of the Kentucky 225th Anniversary Commission, we invite all Kentuckians to tune in and join us in celebrating this milestone of statehood. History is all around us, and sharing Kentucky’s story with generations of Kentuckians speaks to the very heart of our mission to educate, inspire, and connect. Sometimes that history focuses on names known the world over, while at other times, and just as importantly, we bring attention to lesser-known people, places, and events that have also helped shape our great Commonwealth. From the original settlers of what was to become Kentucky, to the unsung heroes of the Civil Rights movement, to our recent profile of pioneering athlete Marion Miley, there is no shortage of interesting and important stories to document and share. And sometimes that history is deeply personal – like is so often revealed through the stories featured each week on Kentucky Life and Kentucky Collectibles. Yet it resonates with and unites us through our own similar stories of family moments and milestones. We’re proud to tell Kentucky’s story every single day and especially proud to help commemorate this anniversary. Sincerely,

Shae Hopkins

KET Executive Director and CEO

225!

KENTUCKY

TURNS

In Constitution Square in Danville 225 years ago, Kentucky joined the union as our nation’s 15th state. As Kentuckians, we’re a unique breed: our musicians have created new genres, such as Bill Monroe’s bluegrass, or brought our mountain music to the world, such as folk pioneer Jean Ritchie. We’ve made our mark on the history of our nation: Daniel Boone led settlers into new territory, while Abraham Lincoln guided the country through the most tumultuous and potentially devastating period in our history. We’ve spiced up the fabric of American life through our bourbon industry, and capture the world’s attention each May when “they’re off!” signals the running of the Kentucky Derby. Take some time to appreciate our “common wealth” this month through a true wealth of programs reflecting ourselves and our place in the world. From The History of Northern Kentucky to Dreamers and Doers, these documentaries ponder where we’ve come from, who we are, and where we’re going. See below for descriptions of a few of our favorite programs we’re airing this month; turn to pages 8-11 in this issue of Visions to see more. A complete listing is also available on our website at KET.org/225ky. And tune in to the Kentucky Channel to see even more programs by and for Kentuckians every day.

In this special report, Nova investigates what happened in Flint, Mich., when local officials changed the city’s water source to save money, but overlooked a critical treatment process. As the water pipes corroded, lead leached into the system, exposing the community — including thousands of children — to dangerous levels of poison. The Great British Baking Show

We wanna hold your hand all evening long, beginning with Produced by George Martin, about Britain’s most celebrated record producer, best known for his work with The Beatles. Then, the all-new Sgt. Pepper’s Musical Revolution, looks back at the creation and ongoing influence of the classic album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, released by the Beatles 50 years ago. Wrap up the evening with How the Beatles Rocked the Kremlin. Even though they never performed there, their music and rebellious style soaked into the lives of a generation of Russian kids.

new season The food show phenomenon returns for a fourth season. Known as much for its perfect “scrummy” patisseries as for its “soggy bottom” failures, the baking competition follows amateur bakers from diverse backgrounds who tackle culinary trials that increase in difficulty as the competition unfolds. In the first program, meet the 12 bakers as they tackle a popular cake with a fatless sponge and tricky chocolate work — then it’s biscuits and bread to round out the month.

Prime Suspect: Tennison on Masterpiece

new season DCI Banks returns for its grittiest season yet with an explosive serial crime story that weaves through all three episodes. When the victim of a frenzied attack is found in the woods, the team wonders if it’s a random killing or related to the location — a shrine to a local girl who recently committed suicide there. But when Banks uncovers a link to a local crime boss, he formulates a theory of his own. What starts out as a missing person’s case soon escalates into a kidnap and ransom. And Banks and the team have a painful job finding out how a recent tragedy occurred.

This three-part prequel to the original featuring Helen Mirren stars Stefanie Martini as an ambitious, single-minded 22-year-old probationary officer, starting out in an environment where chauvinism and rule-bending are the norm. Rewinding to 1970s London, Jane’s dedicated, instinctive approach is evident from the start as she is thrown into a brutal murder inquiry. The series reveals the complexities of the ambition and personal life that shaped one of television’s most famous female characters.

series Prominent Kentuckians in the United States Senate. “Our Commonwealth has been blessed with a rich heritage and has contributed much to our nation’s development,” said McConnell, currently the U.S. Senate majority leader. “One of the most significant was Owensboro’s Wendell Ford.” The Wendell H. Ford Government Education Center in Owensboro hosted the lecture and featured Ford’s grandson, Clay Ford, introducing McConnell. Ford, who represented Kentucky for four terms in the senate from 1974 through 1999, also served the state as governor from 1971 to 1974. After retiring, having never lost a Kentucky race, he established the Ford Center to help provide Kentucky’s young people with education in government.
