5 Victoria on Masterpiece KET Sunday, March 5 • 9/8 pm KET2 Wednesday, March 8 • 8/7 pm The royal series reaches its climax with “Young England,” the season finale. This portrait of a monarch who was raised to be the pawn of her powerful elders — but who wasted no time in showing the empire who was in charge — followed Victoria from her accession to the throne at age 18, through her education in politics, courtship, and marriage. The finale features Victoria on the verge of delivering her first child, spurning advice and ventures among her subjects, and attracting the devoted and demented alike.

KET2 Tuesday, March 7 • 6:30/5:30 pm KET Friday, March 17 • 11:30/10:30 pm

Rock Rewind: 1967-1969

Born Virginia Patterson Hensley in Winchester, Virginia, Patsy Cline (1932–1963) defined modern country music by using her singular talent and heart-wrenching emotional depth to break down barriers of gender, class, and genre. In her music and her life, she set a standard of authenticity toward which artists still strive. After years of hard work to overcome industry gender biases and her own personal hardships and professional missteps, she achieved success, only to have it punctured by uncanny premonitions and her untimely death at age 30.

Take a time-tripping visit back to the pop songs of the psychedelic era with legendary artists in this all-new retrospective. The late 1960s was a period of change and excitement, with youthful sounds on the radio that echoed peace and protest, relevance and romance. This special compilation draws upon rare, vintage television appearances not seen in decades from the era’s most popular performers, including Sonny & Cher, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Dusty Springfield, The Rascals, The 5th Dimension, and more.

KET Thursday, March 16 • 9:30/8:30 pm

21 Calculating Ada: The Countess of Computing KET Tuesday, March 21 • 8/7 pm KET2 Sunday, March 26 • 8/7 pm Victorian-era British socialite Ada Lovelace was one of the world’s earliest — and unlikeliest — computer pioneers. The estranged daughter of infamous poet Lord Byron, she was both an imaginative writer and talented mathematician who foresaw the rise of the digital age more than a century before it became a reality. In this program, learn the story of Ada’s short yet remarkable life, from her early academic prowess to her famed collaborations with Charles Babbage, the man popularly known as the “father of computers.”

22 My Love Affair with the Brain: The Life & Science of Dr. Marian Diamond KET Wednesday, March 22 • 10/9 pm KET2 Sunday, March 26 • 6/5 pm Meet a woman who carries around a preserved human brain inside a hat box: Dr. Marian Diamond, a renowned academic and research scientist, who describes her 60-year career researching the human brain as “pure joy.” Follow Diamond over a five-year period and learn of her scientific accomplishments and the charming woman herself who is one of the founders of modern neuroscience, all the more remarkable because she began during an era when so few women entered science at all.

29 Secrets of the Dead: Nero’s Sunken City KET Wednesday, March 29 • 10/9 pm KET2 Thursday, March 30 • 9/8 pm The ancient Roman city Baiae, lost to the same volcanoes that entombed Pompeii, languished underwater in the Bay of Naples, forgotten in the annals of history — until now. The Las Vegas of its day, Baiae was an escape for Rome’s rich and powerful, where they were free of the social restrictions of Roman society. Now, a team of archaeologists is mapping the underwater ruins and piecing together what life was like in this playground for the rich — and the site of some of the most treacherous political dealings of ancient Rome, with Emperor Nero and his enemies hatching deadly plots against each other.

Kentucky leaders help KET craft workforce training materials

KET/WGBH initiative to integrate computational thinking in preschools

In January, a task force of 15 business, industry, and government representatives from across the state met at KET in a “soft skills forum” focused on critical characteristics required for employees in entry-level, non-supervisory positions. Led by the Eastern Kentucky University Facilitation Center, participants identified the top-five most-critical skills needed by these employees: effective communication, dependability/reliability, problem solving, cooperation, and time management. The findings from the event will be used to inform KET’s efforts to provide relevant workplace training and curriculum materials.

KET is exploring how young children can learn computational thinking concepts during math instruction. Along with preschool teachers and Boston public television station WGBH, KET will develop resources based on this research for the classroom. Computational thinking is a systematic way of thinking that fosters creativity and problem-solving across a wide range of disciplines, including math, science, engineering, literacy, and executive function. Members of KET’s Early Childhood staff will observe preschoolers in Eastern Kentucky as they use hands-on activities and tablet apps with a playful monkey theme. Classrooms were chosen in collaboration with the Appalachian Renaissance Initiative.

100 science awards available to high school students Applications are now being accepted for Emperor of Science Awards, an initiative designed to encourage high school students to explore careers in science, specifically cancer research and care. Last year’s winners included two Kentucky students, Haley Dicken and Makenzie Daniels, both now studying at Western Kentucky University. They were selected from among more than 1,200 applicants. The award program, sponsored in part by PBS LearningMedia, aims to help high school students to become the next generation of cancer researchers. Winners work with university-level research scientists on a multi-week cancer research project and receive a Google Chrome Notebook to enhance their studies, travel expenses where applicable, a $1,500 stipend for expenses, and the opportunity to continue the mentoring program through high school, to further their academic pursuits. The initiative was launched in 2015 in connection with the PBS documentary Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies. Entry is open to 10th and 11th grade students in the U.S. interested in scientific careers. Entries will be accepted through March 17. For information on how to apply, go to The Emperor of Science Award program website at www.EmperorScienceAward.com.

YOUR SUPPORT HELPS MAKE KET POSSIBLE Thank you to the following corporate partners for their generous support of excellence in television.

KET explores public health crisis with Inside Opioid Addiction initiative Kentucky has the third-highest drug overdose death rate in the United States. And that rate is rising. “Drug overdose deaths and opioid-involved deaths continue to increase in the United States,” reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “Deaths from drug overdose are up among both men and women, all races, and adults of nearly all ages.” The CDC has also identified 220 counties in the U.S. with the highest risk for developing outbreaks of HIV and Hepatitis C-related to intravenous drug use. Twenty-five percent — 54 counties — are in Kentucky. Over the past year, KET has been working to elevate awareness of the complex issues that surround this public health crisis. KET’s Inside Opioid Addiction initiative, funded in part by the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky, explores the many dimensions of this crisis and pathways toward solutions. Recent programs include: Journey to Recovery, a new KET documentary that examines treatment and recovery programs, and provides insight from national experts in addiction recovery and drug policy Inside Opioid Addiction Forum, a discussion hosted by KET’s Renee Shaw that brings together prominent Kentucky policy and law enforcement officials, medical experts, and recovery advocates who discuss effective strategies to combat the crisis All facets of our communities are impacted: prison systems, public safety, the courts, schools, hospitals, emergency workers, employers, and social services. Most impacted are the Kentuckians with opioid addiction — and their families — who are struggling in its grip or on the path to recovery. Visit KET.org/opioids to watch and share Inside Opioid Addiction resources and programs.

MORE TO EXPLORE

LITERATURE COMES TO LIFE Immerse yourself in the artistry of the Brontë sisters

Ever since they were revealed to the world as quaint country-women and not the notorious Bell brothers of their pseudonyms, the Brontë sisters have fascinated legions of devoted readers. Masterpiece brings these remarkable literary geniuses to life in the beautifully filmed and acted two-hour drama, To Walk Invisible: The Brontë Sisters. Depicting the evolution of secluded, dutiful clergyman’s daughters into authors of the most controversial fiction of the 1840s, this drama profiles Charlotte, who shocked society with her edgy epic, Jane Eyre; Emily, author of the darkly gothic and disturbing Wuthering Heights; and Anne, whose true-to-life love story The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was deemed “coarse and disgusting” by Victorian critics. The program was filmed in and around Haworth, the picturesque Yorkshire village where the Brontë sisters lived. Scenes at their parsonage home were shot in an exact replica that recreates the feel of a lived-in mid-19thcentury provincial dwelling, with the sisters congregating around the dining table to pen their stories and plot their editorial strategy.

ago, said producer David Harl of Lexington. “As a voice for justice, he put himself at risk to be an advocate for the people of Eastern Kentucky and the protection of its natural resources,” Harl said. “He fought for the rights of workers in the coal industry and called to action the political figures of his time.” Featuring a rare interview with Mrs. Anne Frye Caudill, Harry Caudill: A Man of Courage offers insight from the people who knew him, wrote about him, and continue his work today.
