Saying farewell
KET REMEMBERS SUPPORTERS DON BALL AND PEARSE LYONS
Don Ball, the founder of Lexington-based Ball Homes, and Pearse Lyons, the native Irish entrepreneur who founded the international animal nutrition firm Alltech Inc., passed away this spring. They leave behind indelible marks not only on the Kentuckians who knew and respected them — but also upon the heart of KET and all we serve. For years, both men devoted both time and resources to helping KET achieve its mission. To mark their passing, KET is presenting this retrospective of their support and, by extension, the educational well-being of countless Kentuckians young and old. DON BALL: A GENIAL HOST AND GENEROUS SUPPORTER Ball and his wife, Mira, founded Ball Homes in 1959 building thousands of homes across the state. Still family-owned, the business ranks as one of the top builders in the nation. The Balls have been generous philanthropists, supporting causes such as homelessness, addiction recovery, the University of Kentucky and the Urban League. Their support of KET dates back three decades. They hosted KET’s first Summer Celebration fundraiser on their Donamire Farm, and have continued to host the event for most of its 30 years. In addition to supporting programs, the Balls are lead contributors to KET’s Lucille Little Arts Endowment and the John R. Hall Endowment for Education. Mira Ball was a founding member of the Commonwealth Fund for KET Board of Directors, and continues to serve today. “It’s hard to imagine Summer Celebration without the support of Don Ball behind us,” said Shae Hopkins, KET’s executive director. “We will always be grateful for his presence in our lives and for his interest and kindness.”
PEARSE LYONS: FROM IRELAND TO THE BLUEGRASS Lyons, born in Ireland’s County Louth, immigrated to Lexington in 1972. As a scientist trained as a brewer, he saw an opportunity to apply his yeast fermentation expertise to animal nutrition challenges, and he and his wife, Deirdre, founded Alltech Inc. in 1980. Today that business has expanded worldwide. And as it grew, Deirdre and Pearse Lyons, 2009 Lyons also became an ardent unofficial ambassador for Kentucky, becoming instrumental in bringing the World Equestrian Games to Lexington in 2010. As a supporter of KET, he served on the Commonwealth Fund for KET Board of Directors from 2008 to 2010, just one of three boards, at the time, he served on internationally. “Dr. Lyons’ values and those of KET are closely matched; both care about the quality of life of the people here in our state,” noted Hopkins. “He grew to love Kentucky as much as any native of the Commonwealth.” The Lyonses were honorary chairs of the 2011 Summer Celebration, and Alltech is a longtime financial sponsor of the event and other KET funMira Ball and Pearse Lyons, 2008 draisers, including TeleFund and the Fund for Excellence annual football tailgate party. In addition, Alltech is a lead contributor to KET’s Endowment for Kentucky Productions and currently sponsors the broadcasts of Nature, Nova, BBC World News, PBS Arts and A Grand Night for Singing.
K
entucky lost two dear friends in March. Don Ball and Pearse Lyons were not only incredibly talented businessmen but also generous philanthropists whose impact on the state will continue to be felt long after their passing. Both valued the mission of KET, and some of my fondest memories of them are from their involvement in Summer Celebration, KET’s annual fundraising gala in Lexington. It was 30 years ago that a group of community volunteers helped us with the inaugural Summer Celebration. Mira and Don Ball graciously hosted that first event at their beautiful Donamire Farm, and it has been there almost every year since then. More than simply providing a space, Don took such an interest, looking after us in the long days of preparation and later telling me how proud he was of the event. More recently, it was wonderful to have Deirdre and Pearse Lyons serve as honorary chairpersons of Summer Celebration. Always so positive and lively, Pearse happily donned a top hat as the ringmaster for that particular year’s circus theme. Don and Pearse will be missed in obvious ways, but probably much more in the many subtle ways they added to the goodness and vibrancy of our community.
Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins

A 2018 LITERARY INITIATIVE
L
oved by generations of women worldwide, it’s a truly universal coming-of-age story, as relevant and engaging today as it was on its original publication in 1868. Little Women, set against the backdrop of the Civil War, follows sisters Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March on their journey from childhood to adulthood. With the help of their mother, Marmee, and while their father is away at war, the girls navigate what it means to be a young woman: from sibling rivalry and first love, to loss and marriage. Set in Concord, Mass., Alcott’s semi-autobiographical story became an instant bestseller when it was published and remains one of the most widely read novels of all time. A recent Harris poll listing it as one of America’s 10 favorite books confirms its enduring place in the cultural landscape. “Little Women is one of the most-loved novels in the English language, and with good reason,” said series writer Heidi Thomas. “Its humanity, humor and tenderness never date, and as a study of love, grief and growing up, it has no equal. There could be no better time to revisit the story of a family striving for happiness in an uncertain world, and I am thrilled to be bringing the March girls to a new generation of viewers.” BAFTA Award-winner Emily Watson (The Theory of Everything, Genius) stars as Marmee, the iconic matriarch of the March family. The March sisters are played by an ensemble of four exciting young actresses: newcomer Maya Hawke as willful and adventurous Jo, Willa Fitzgerald as the eldest daughter Meg, Annes Elwy plays Beth, and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) takes the role of the youngest sister, Amy. Academy Award-winner Dame Angela Lansbury plays the girls’ wealthy relative, the cantankerous Aunt March.
KET Begins Sunday, May 13 • 8/7 pm KET2 Begins Wednesday, May 16 • 8/7 pm
Examine the power, passion and joy of reading through the lens of America’s 100 best-loved books chosen by the public. The eight-part series culminates in a vote to choose “America’s Best-Loved Book.” Authors, celebrities and notable figures in the entertainment, sports, news and literary worlds are lending their voices and passion to the project, including Margaret Atwood, Lesley Stahl, Devon Kennard, Junot Díaz and many others who share their personal stories and connections to their favorite titles. The two-hour special launching the project journeys across the country to uncover illuminating details and new reflections, sometimes from unlikely sources, about some of the titles on the top-100 book list, revealing the story behind the story from multiple perspectives. To spark conversation about the books that have inspired, moved and shaped us, both individually and as a society, viewers will hear from a variety of sources about what the novels on the top-100 list can tell us about our diverse nation, our shared values, our cultural identities and the common themes that tie us together.

The Hollywood star was known as the world’s most beautiful woman; Snow White and Cat Woman were both based on her iconic look. But her Hollywood glamour stood in the way of her being given the credit she deserved as an inventor. She developed a covert communication system to try to help defeat the Nazis, but was ignored and told to sell kisses for war bonds instead. It was only at the end of her life that tech pioneers discovered that it was her concept that became the basis for secure WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth technologies.
Pangolins are often described as “the most endangered animal you’ve never heard of.” The world’s only scaly mammal, pangolins are now trafficked at a higher rate than rhinos, elephants and tigers combined, for medicinal use in China, Thailand and Vietnam. Very little is known about even their most basic biology, and this is hampering conservation efforts – pangolins almost always die in captivity. Come along on this conservation crusade from Africa to Asia and learn more about these surprisingly charming creatures.

KET supports science and technology instruction
Kentucky educator named PBS All-Star
Education in science, technology, engineering and math — collectively known as STEM — has become imperative in our technologically driven world. In response, KET provides a wealth of resources to help teachers and students become proficient in these important subject areas. These resources for learners, from early childhood through workforce development, have now been collected in an easily accessible online repository at KET.org/STEM-Works. Instructional resources include KET’s Everyday Science for Preschoolers series, the NASA Physics and Engineering Collection, Think Garden, Physics Girl, and much more. Teachers can find professional development resources, and there’s also a career pathways section with resources to learn about jobs requiring STEM-based knowledge and skills.
Ashley Judd, a fourth-grade teacher at Tyner Elementary in Jackson County, is one of 30 educators from around the country chosen for the PBS Digital Innovator All-Star Program. Each was nominated by their local PBS stations and selected from a pool of educators who were previously recognized as part of the PBS Digital Innovator Program.

Students and KET explore technology at statewide event KET joined nearly 12,000 students and educators at the Kentucky Department of Education’s 2018 Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) State Championship at Rupp Arena in Lexington. All day March 30, KET streamed the exciting events live on the KET website — and KET educators provided an array of interactive experiences including a green-screen booth and opportunities for students to shadow production staff. In addition, the News Quiz crew recorded throughout the day for inclusion in an episode of KET’s long-running educational current-events program. Aspiring reporters were especially excited to get a chance to learn from host Kelsey Starks, below, while others had the chance to operate video cameras and shoot photos. The STLP State Championship gives students an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to use technology in a variety of ways. Winners were determined in over 40 categories.
