PROTECTING KENTUCKY KET’s transmission towers carry more than television programs

KET’s transmission network — the same system of transmitters and towers that deliver the latest Masterpiece drama, Nature documentary and Daniel Tiger episode to your home — plays another important role in serving Kentuckians. It’s part of a state and national public safety grid that plays a critical role ensuring that weather officials, first responders and law enforcement agencies maintain communications, especially when disaster strikes. Consider the ice storm that crippled much of Kentucky in 2009, leaving more than a half-million without power. Phone lines and cell towers went dark, but emergency officials were able to communicate critical information thanks to KET’s network infrastructure. “The best warning system is one that works in multiple ways—and KET’s transmission network is part of the backbone of our communications with the general public,” says Joe Sullivan, the National Weather Service’s warning coordination meteorologist in Louisville. “If power is lost to the cell towers, for instance, our information still gets to where it needs to go because of this backup system. And it saves lives.” The KET network uses a vast array of microwave radio links and broadcast transmitters to deliver KET’s four channels to the entire Commonwealth and into parts of the seven surrounding states. If you have TV service from a cable or satellite company, your provider receives KET’s signal from this broadcast transmission network, and then delivers it to your home. If you receive TV over-the-air through an antenna, your KET channels come directly from the KET broadcast network. This same network of 16 transmitters and 15 towers, located across the commonwealth, also house local, state and federal agencies’ communications systems. Each site is backed up with emergency generators and can run for up to 72 hours after loss of
commercial power. With fuel deliveries, KET’s transmission sites can remain powered indefinitely, providing critical communication support in the event of an emergency. This infrastructure helps KET partner with and support a wide variety of agencies, including Kentucky Emergency Warning System, Kentucky National Guard, Kentucky
astronomical,” says Dana Golub, a vice-president and director of PBS WARN, the backup network for nationwide wireless emergency alerting, which is broadcast throughout Kentucky by KET’s transmission system. “The federal government’s investments to leverage the existing infrastructure of public television was a no brainer because our network

State Police, Kentucky Department of Transportation, Kentucky Division of Forestry, and the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. The KET network also supports NOAA’s National Weather Service with 13 NOAA weather transmitters on KET towers. These 100- to 1,000foot towers — much taller than regional radio or cell-phone towers — serve as a well-distributed statewide communications system to alert the public of weather and other emergencies. KET’s statewide transmissions network offers efficiencies, often eliminating the need for other agencies to construct their own towers. “The cost to build out a backup system for emergency communications from scratch would be
already reaches 95 percent of the country.” KET transmission sites also host equipment used by the FBI, the U.S. Secret Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. And many KET sites are used by local agencies for communications, including sheriffs’ departments and local emergency management. As part of the federal government’s Emergency Alert System, KET is ready to serve. In the event of a national emergency, a special receiver located in KET’s network center, would override broadcasts to deliver vital information to the public. It’s tested weekly, and the federal government conducts nationwide tests periodically.
Watching KET, you probably don’t give much thought to the infrastructure required to broadcast and deliver programs to your home; however, it’s KET’s statewide tower network that enables the delivery of programs and public safety communications throughout the Commonwealth. KET recently completed major upgrades to our transmission infrastructure, including updates and reinforcement to the towers themselves, as part of the federally mandated spectrum repack. With 16 transmitters in KET’s statewide network, this was the largest spectrum repack in the nation. The $20 million project — reimbursed by the FCC — was a significant achievement, delivered on schedule, under budget, and with minimal interruption to our viewers. And while the impetus of the initiative was to free up additional spectrum for wireless companies, this work will also have an impact on our ability to support Kentucky’s public safety systems –— as we’ve improved KET’s highly reliable communications infrastructure available 24/7/365. With changing technologies forthcoming, KET is uniquely positioned to further expand its public safety services by delivering localized emergency alerts. Working with the state’s emergency management team and network of Kentucky broadcasters, enhanced services are on the horizon. KET is proud to serve as part of Kentucky’s public safety communications infrastructure and to support the team of dedicated men and women who work to protect us all. Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins

T
o the outside world, he was the king of cool. A jazz giant whose silhouette loomed large over the musical landscape. But the story of Miles Davis is a complex one, marked in equal measure both by his professional successes and his personal struggles. American Masters—Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool takes a hard look at the mythology that surrounds one of the jazz world’s most innovative and influential figures. The documentary by awardwinning filmmaker Stanley Nelson (The Murder of Emmitt Till) earned a Grammy nomination for “Best Music Film” in 2019 after its run in theaters. Bolstered by full access to the Miles Davis Estate, Nelson’s film seeks to chronicle Davis’ complete life: from his formative years feeling his way through New York’s jazz scene, to his collaborations with other luminaries such as Charlie Parker, Gil Evans and John Coltrane, to his tumultuous life offstage, plagued as it was by his abusive behavior toward women as well as his health and addiction problems.
The film, says Los Angeles Times film critic Glenn Whipp, “attempts to understand the man as much as the music.” And Nelson, a veteran documentary filmmaker who has won three Emmys and a Peabody Award, approaches his subject "with both an empathy and unflinching honesty,” Whipp says. The documentary takes a deep dive into Davis’ six decades as a musical artist. It examines both his boundary-breaking musical triumphs as well as his personal failings, all told through intimate reflections from those closest to him: Quincy Jones, Carlos Santana, Clive Davis, Wayne Shorter and an assortment of Davis’ collaborators and family members. What emerges is a full portrait of a complex man who continually sought to push the boundaries of his music, regardless of the cost it exacted on himself and those in his orbit. KET and KET PBS KIDS now live streaming 24/7
Remembering Carroll Spinney, puppeteer for Big Bird
KET’s primary channel, along with the KET PBS KIDS channel, is now available for around-the-clock live streaming at KET.org/live and through the KET app for Apple and Android devices. Additionally, both channels are now on YouTube TV, the subscription-based streaming service.
Carroll Spinney, the actor and puppeteer who portrayed Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street for more than five decades, died on December 8 at the age of 85. Spinney originally modeled Big Bird’s personality after that of a six-year-old child, and the voice of Oscar the Grouch was borrowed from a New York City cab driver.
Three communities awarded minigrants for STEM-based activities KET recently distributed mini-grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Ready To Learn initiative to the Oil Springs Cultural Arts and Recreation Center in Johnson County; a consortium of family resource centers in Jefferson County; and the Floyd County Early Childhood Council. The grants help fund camps and workshops that introduce children and their caregivers to STEMbased concepts and other fun science activities to help promote early childhood learning.
KET helps make PBS Digital Studios content for the classroom

MORE TO EXPLORE
What can be done to counter the rise of diabetes in Kentucky?
Nearly half of Kentucky adults have either diabetes or prediabetes. But far too many don’t know it. In a new documentary, KET shines a light on the alarming numbers of people with undiagnosed diabetes or prediabetes and shows how Kentuckians are working to reduce those rates. Currently, more than 30 million people nationwide have diabetes and 84 million have prediabetes, meaning that their blood sugar is higher than normal. Type 2 diabetes, often linked to diet, exercise, genetics, and other factors, account for about 90 percent of all diabetes cases. And health officials say they’re worried to be seeing type 2 diabetes in increasingly younger patients. But there is room for hope: With lifestyle changes and proper care and support, diabetes can be managed and, in
some cases, prevented or delayed, health officials say. A studio discussion will follow the 30-minute documentary, hosted by Dr. Wayne Tuckson of Kentucky Health. The program was funded in part by a grant from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky.
