usan Elkington, president of Toyota’s manufacturing plant in Georgetown, recently gave her five-year-old niece an unusual Christmas gift: an oval-shaped piece of plastic with two holes in it. When asked about the object, Elkington replied: “This is for her imagination.” Sure enough, her niece used the plastic oval as a doll’s sled, a rocking chair for her sister, and more. “There were so many different things that she thought of,” Elkington said. “It goes to show that if you give children an opportunity to be inquisitive in a fun way, they’ll run with it. But so many children don’t necessarily have those opportunities in their everyday lives.”
THE SCIENCE OF EARLY LEARNING It’s one reason why Elkington says she values KET, particularly its children’s programming. In fact, a recent study commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education shows that disadvantaged children, ages 4-5, who watch the PBS KIDS series A Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That! have a greater interest in and understanding of core physical science ideas. “It’s so important to introduce kids at a young age to the con2

cepts of STEM,” Elkington says. “And KET’s programs do that. They allow children to have fun and to learn without really realizing that they’re learning. And that’s a great way for parents — many of whom don’t have a STEM background — to help prepare their children to enter the school system and to be successful long-term.”
AN EVOLVING WORKFORCE In Kentucky, where manufacturing is the state’s leading industry, an openness to learning new things will likely play a role in the state’s future economic growth, Elkington says. As manufacturing plants evolve, adding sophisticated robotics and automation, the state’s workforce will need to keep up, continually adding new skills. And KET’s workforce development resources, such as its In Demand series and Workplace Essential Skills, are important tools for helping to get the word out about the state’s changing needs. KET’s In Demand videos, which offer a snapshot of what a career in one of Kentucky’s high-demand industries might look like, can help steer those considering a career change or

THEY ALLOW CHILDREN TO HAVE FUN AND TO LEARN WITHOUT REALLY REALIZING THAT THEY’RE LEARNING.” those coming directly out of school to industries they might previously have overlooked, such as manufacturing, Elkington said. “Programs like KET’s In Demand series are so important because they help get the word out that there are a lot of opportunities in manufacturing,” Elkington says. “Plants aren’t what they used to be. They’re bright and clean. And they allow people to work as members of a team with a wealth of new technology, like robotics and artificial intelligence. And we need to continue to get that story out because we know that there are so many people here who can be successful in this field.”
KET has a long history and national reputation for providing resources for adult learners. Current services include KET’s highly touted In Demand video series that provides a fast-paced and engaging look into Kentucky’s high-demand job sectors and apprenticeships. Utilized in career centers across the commonwealth, middle and high school students are using them to explore potential career paths. Also focusing on career sectors, our new Workplace Essential Skills study system features courses with math and language lessons contextualized to areas including manufacturing, construction, healthcare and more. Users can build the fundamental skills they need to succeed in these high-demand areas as well. And there’s KET’s nationally utilized FastForward learning system, with a 90% GED® pass rate, that’s being piloted for use in correctional institutions. All these resources are convenient and accessible online to help more Kentuckians gain the skills they need for success, which benefits us all. This work has been further supported by the American Graduate initiative. We have been a proud partner in this long-term commitment from public media to help young people succeed in school, career and life. As the workplace continues to rapidly evolve, the need has never been greater. More information about these and other resources are available at KET.org/workforce. Sincerely,

ane Austen was chronically ill with a mysterious disease in early 1817 when she turned her thoughts to a happier subject. She started work on a witty and delightful novel set in a seaside town. But she never finished it. Noted screenwriter Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Les Misérables) has now picked up Austen’s plot and taken it to its conclusion, creating an eighthour Masterpiece miniseries that premieres on KET this month. Sanditon chronicles the story of Charlotte Heywood, the daughter of a visiting family who, by chance, gets intertwined with Tom Parker, an entrepreneur attempting to turn a sleepy seaside village into a fashionable health resort. Tom’s plan hits its share of bumps along the way. And it isn’t long before Charlotte is exposed not only to the intrigues and dalliances of a resort in the making, but likewise the characters whose fortunes depend on its commercial success. Like any good Austen novel, the plot holds its share of twists and turns, taking viewers from the West Indies to the rotting alleys of London. The characters, likewise, are not always whom they appear to be, and some work desperately — and not always successfully — to keep their hidden agendas from being revealed. Sanditon on Masterpiece

More Stories of BRITISH SOCIETY Host Lucy Worsley traces Jane Austen’s life and career, exploring the different houses in which the author lived, in hopes of discovering just how much the dwellings shaped Austen’s novels. Worsley journeys across England, visiting the properties that still exist, from grand stately homes to seaside holiday apartments, and bringing to life those that have disappeared. The result is a revealing insight into one of the world’s best-loved authors. Jane Austen - Behind Closed Doors

Howards End
In this four-part miniseries, Academy Award-winning screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan (Gangs of New York, Manchester By the Sea) brings a fresh take to E.M. Forster’s masterpiece, Howards End. It’s the story of two independent and unconventional sisters seeking love and navigating a class-conscious Britain at the turn-of-the-century. Margaret Schlegel, one of the sisters, falls in love with an older, self-made businessman, Henry Wilcox. But a question arises: Can two people with fundamentally different values make a relationship work?
