A Healthy Commonwealth “We’re all in this together, Kentucky.” That’s been one of the central messages throughout the COVID-19 epidemic. And it’s a vital one, says Dr. Brent Wright, president of the Kentucky Medical Association, because it asks that people look beyond themselves to gain perspective on what their fellow Kentuckians are facing. “There are a lot of challenges because the world has changed,” Wright says. “And every person, family, school and business will be making important decisions going forward in how they interact in this post-COVID world.” It’s one of the reasons Wright says he’s thankful for KET and the reliable health information it furnishes the Commonwealth, whether through its Coronavirus: A Kentucky Update program, town-hall style forums or news and wellness programs. “There’s still much to be known about this virus, so it’s important to consume good information,” Wright says. “KET has always been a trusted source, one that provides credible, well-researched evidence that helps people make informed decisions. And it does respected journalism that keeps our Commonwealth up-todate.” Wright, a family doctor from Glasgow, says he learned long ago

that public health “goes well beyond the exam room.” The COVID-19 epidemic, he says, offers a powerful reminder of this, given how the virus has disrupted Kentucky’s economy and upended nearly every facet of people’s lives. “That makes it all the more important that we hear from each other

COVID-19 and another on the flu. “It brings so many people to the table. And I have the utmost respect for Renee Shaw and Dr. Wayne Tuckson, both of whom offer a measured, balanced approach to the issues.” The COVID-19 epidemic, likewise, underscores the importance

“KET has always been a trusted source, one that provides credible, well-researched evidence that helps people make informed decisions. And it does respected journalism that keeps our Commonwealth up-to-date.” so we can address the challenges we all share,” Wright says. KET plays a central role in fostering important statewide conversations, bringing together people from a variety of organizations and walks of life to offer a broad perspective, he adds. “That’s the beauty of KET— it’s a great convening body,” says Wright, who has been a guest on several KET health programs in recent years, including episodes on

of maintaining good daily health habits, Wright says, adding that the virus in some ways serves as a “stress-test” on the body. “The things we all typically worry about—aging, diabetes, hypertension—those are all things that come into play as we work to flatten the COVID curve,” Wright says. “It just shows you that good health information never goes out of vogue.”

Reflecting on the events of recent weeks that have highlighted systemic issues regarding race and racism in America, we know there is much KET can do through our services to help further understanding, respect and fairness for all. We are reaffirming our mission of serving every single Kentuckian by providing programs and resources that offer educational opportunities for everyone, no matter background or circumstance; by bringing together diverse voices and fostering muchneeded, though sometimes difficult conversations; and by striving to bring light and understanding where it does not exist. Our commitment doesn’t begin today — it is renewed to give voice to all people, to deepen understanding about the challenges facing our society, and to provide trusted forums for important conversations about the path forward.  Sincerely,

VISION S

JULY 2 020

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment with a new two-part American Experience that tells the courageous stories of those who led the way in the fight for women’s suffrage. Also this month, American Masters presents a special featuring little-known and diverse female trailblazers from the turn of the 20th century.

American Experience: The Vote

KET Monday, July 6 & Tuesday, July 7 • 9/8 pm KET2 Thursday, July 9 • 9/8 pm & Monday, July 13 • 10/9 pm This four-hour, two-part documentary tells the dramatic story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote — a transformative cultural and political movement that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history. Dramatic and thought-provoking, The Vote, at its core, is a story about power. Focusing primarily on the movement’s momentous final decade, the film charts American women’s determined march to the ballot box and illuminates the myriad social, political and cultural obstacles that stood in their path. The Vote is available to watch on KET Passport before it airs on broadcast. American Masters: Unladylike

KET Friday, July 10 • 9/8 pm KET2 Thursday, July 16 • 9/8 pm

Delve into the stories of American heroines from the early years of the fight for equal rights, when women faced limited career and educational choices. These extraordinary women charted their own paths and achieved many firsts, such as founding a hospital, fighting for the desegregation of public spaces, exploring the Arctic, opening a film studio, and singing opera at Carnegie Hall. Their fascinating stories are brought back to life thanks to original artwork and animation, rare historical archival footage, and interviews with historians and descendants.

Secrets of the Dead: Viking Warrior Queen

KET Saturday, July 4 • 8/7 & 9:30/8:30 pm KET2 Sunday, July 5 • 10/9 pm

KET Tuesday, July 7 • 8/7 pm KET2 Monday, July 13 • 11/10 pm

The 40th anniversary edition of A Capitol Fourth returns live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol as we celebrate our nation’s 244th birthday. The country’s longest-running live national July 4 TV tradition will feature all-star musical performances with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly and broadcast to troops serving around the world on the American Forces Network.

One of the most significant Viking graves ever found contained the remains of a warrior who might have sacked western Europe in the 10th century. A researcher studying the bones from the grave noted the skeleton had many female characteristics. In 2017, a team of Swedish archaeologists astonished everyone by proving, through a DNA study, that the great warrior wasn’t a man, but a woman. Who was she?

Great Performances at the Met: Porgy and Bess

This biographical series tells the stories of the most powerful figures of modern times: Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin, Franklin Roosevelt, Emporer Hirohito and Adolf Hitler. They came from different parts of the world, espoused radically different political doctrines and seemed to have had no common characteristics except an ambition to lead, a taste for power and a belief that they had been chosen by destiny.

One of America’s favorite operas returns to the Met for the first time in nearly 30 years. James Robinson’s production transports audiences to Catfish Row on the Charleston waterfront, vibrant with the music, dancing, emotion and heartbreak of its characters. David Robertson conducts a dynamic cast, featuring the sympathetic duo of Eric Owens and Angel Blue in the title roles.

KET Friday, July 17 • 9/8 pm

21 American Experience: Clinton KET Tuesday, July 21 • 8/7 pm KET2 Monday, July 27 • 9/8 pm This film explores the story of an American president who rose from a broken childhood in Arkansas to become one of the most successful politicians in modern American history and one of the most complex and conflicted characters to ever stride across the public stage. It follows Bill Clinton across his two terms as he confronted some of the key forces that would shape the future in a post-Cold War world.

How the CARES Act affects charitable giving The federal government’s CARES Act acknowledges the importance of non-profits during this time and, through universal tax incentives, encourages support of public servants like KET. Under the CARES Act, donors who take the standard deduction can deduct up to $300 in charitable contributions. And for donors who itemize, the deduction cap is now 100 percent of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). In addition to cash contributions, the CARES Act makes provisions for other ways to support your favorite public television station. To learn more, please contact Katelyn Lincoln, director of philanthropy, at klincoln@ket.org.

Introducing the new KET Summer Story Contest The KET Summer Story Contest seeks to celebrate the everyday helpers and heroes who are answering the call during the coronavirus health pandemic. KET invites students who will be entering kindergarten through third grade to submit an illustrated story on the theme “meet the helpers.” First, second and third-place winning stories will be selected at each grade level. Then from August 1-3, everyone will have the opportunity to vote online for your “fan favorite” from top-placing finalists at each grade level! All entries must be submitted digitally by July 24 at midnight EST. More information is available at KET.org/SummerStory.

Young photographers: Submit your best work! This fall, KET will air the POV documentary Portraits and Dreams, which revisits photographs created by Kentucky schoolchildren in Letcher County in the 1970s. The film is about the students, their work as visionary photographers and the lives they have led since then. In celebration of the film, KET invites Kentucky students in kindergarten through 12th grade to submit their best photography work to KET’s Portraits and Dreams Photo Contest, which runs through July 31. Students are encouraged to be creative and have fun. Visit KET.org/PhotoContest for more details and to enter the contest.

MORE TO EXPLORE

KET addresses race and racism through broadcast and streaming content In June, KET produced the special Kentucky Tonight: State of Unrest, which examines the protests and unrest that erupted in the state in reaction to several incidents of violence across the country. To help our communities examine the history and continued impact of racism and racial disparities in America, we have curated a list of broadcast and streaming programs. This is part of our ongoing commitment to deepen understanding and foster conversation in the pursuit of meaningful change. In addition to Kentucky Tonight: State of Unrest, the list includes KET’s weekly program Connections, KET documentaries, and iconic PBS programs such as Frontline, PBS NewsHour, Independent Lens and more. Watch now at KET.org/RaceInAmerica. In addition, the webpage also features a curated list of free resources for families and educators to use to help shed light on the need to rethink how we’re teaching students to fight racism.

‘The Mountain Minor’ celebrates Appalachian musical heritage During the Great Depression, many Appalachian natives desperate to find work migrated to other parts of the country. In the process, they brought with them the old-time mountain music that had been their primary source of entertainment before phonographs and radio were widely available. The Mountain Minor tells the story of one such family of musicians from Eastern Kentucky who reluctantly moved to Cincinnati in the 1930s. Although the film is fictional, it’s based on the filmmaker’s grandparents, who were from Jackson County.
