A

s president and CEO of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce for the past 14 years, David Adkisson has worked closely with businesses across the state. In his conversations, Adkisson says one topic comes up with alarming frequency: Kentucky’s ever-widening skills gap. “There is a workforce shortage basically across all segments in our state,” Adkisson said. “The economy can’t expand if we can’t find more workers with the appropriate skills for the jobs that exist and will exist in the future.”

In Demand videos provide a snapshot of what a career in one of Kentucky’s high-demand industries might look like. They include information such as the education and experience needed to get these jobs, the work environment, and the salary ranges over the next five years. “A five-minute video clip like these can be life changing, just like a five-minute conversation can be life changing,” said Adkisson. Over the years, Adkisson has been an active voice in conversations about a variety of important state-

KET IS EXCELLENT AT CREATING AN ATMOSPHERE WHERE ALL KENTUCKIANS CAN COME TOGETHER AND HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT HOW WE CAN CREATE OUR OWN FUTURE.” KET has been helping Kentuckians prepare for the workforce for more than 40 years. Most recently KET has created In Demand, a collection of videos focusing on the state’s fastest-growing career sectors — manufacturing, construction, business & IT, logistics & transportation, and healthcare — where there are currently thousands of job vacancies. “KET hit the nail on the head with these videos because this is incredibly valuable information,” Adkisson said.

wide issues, from poverty to education. He has shared his perspective on KET programs including Kentucky Tonight, Legislative Update, and Filling Kentucky Jobs: A KET Forum. KET plays a pivotal role in cultivating dialogue, bringing together leaders from across the state to discuss Kentucky’s most pressing issues, said Adkisson, who, along with his wife Bonnie, are this year’s Summer Celebration honorary chairs.

People often ask me, “What is the most popular program on KET?” While the answer can vary depending on whether there’s a new documentary from Ken Burns, a must-see drama like “Downton Abbey,” or even a lively political forum; there’s been one remarkably consistent answer to that question for more than 20 years: Antiques Roadshow. That’s why we were thrilled to bring producers, appraisers and crew back to Kentucky again last year to capture new treasures — and the stories behind them. A big part of what continues to make this program a favorite is the fact that everyday viewers have such an integral role. Last year, approximately 16,000 people entered the lottery for a chance to win tickets to attend the daylong production. When KET put out the call for the 120 volunteers who were needed to help behind the scenes, we had 200 responses within the first hour and more than 700 before the day was over! Thanks to Churchill Downs for opening their doors to host the filming, you’ll be able to see a backdrop with as much historical significance as many of the items that will be featured. We thank you for continuing to make Antiques Roadshow one of our most popular programs throughout the year and know you will especially enjoy the three new Kentucky episodes premiering this month. Sincerely,

Shae Hopkins

KET Executive Director and CEO

TALES & TREASURES AT CHURCHILL DOWNS DISCOVERING

The big reveal is here! After Antiques Roadshow visited Louisville last year — prompting thousands to rifle through their beloved heirlooms and artifacts — viewers will now get to see the fruits of those labors. Just in time for the Kentucky Derby, three episodes of Antiques Roadshow, filmed on the grounds of the Churchill Downs racetrack, air on KET this month. Louisville was the third stop on the program’s tour, now in its 23rd season. The season features a change in format: Convention centers have been bypassed in favor of the openair environs of some of the country's most picturesque historic sites, such as the Hotel del Coronado resort in San Diego, Meadow Brook Hall near Detroit, and Ca’ d’Zan in Sarasota, Florida. “It makes for a much harder production on our end, but it’s worth

it for the payoff,” said Marsha Bemko, the program’s executive producer. “These are the prettiest shows we’ve ever made.” For the Churchill Downs episodes, some 15,770 people vied for the 1,750 pairs of tickets distributed in a lottery-style drawing. Participants could present up to two items to the program’s 65 expert appraisers. Everyone learned some things about the items they brought. And a lucky few were asked to wait for a producer, meaning the appraiser saw something that might make for interesting viewing. “You want to see rare, valuable things, but what you really want to hear is a great story,” Bemko said. Louisville, it turns out, delivered on both counts: Two of the season’s most valuable finds turned up at Churchill Downs.

One is a 1943 sketch, avowedly by Pablo Picasso, that had been purchased by the owner's grandmother, although there were questions about its authenticity. If it’s a fake, it could fetch maybe $500. But if it’s the real deal, the appraiser said it could be worth much, much more. How much? You’ll have to tune in to find out.

Antiques Roadshow: Churchill Downs Racetrack KET2 Monday, May 6, 13, 20 • 8/7 pm KET Thursday, May 9, 16, 23 • 8/7 pm

HOW DEEP DOES YOUR Roadshow KNOWLEDGE GO? 1. How many times has the Antiques Roadshow production tour visited Kentucky? 2. In Season 20, Antiques Roadshow featured a Belmont Stakes sterling tray awarded to the firstever Triple Crown winner in 1919 — before it was even known as the Triple Crown! What is the name of that champion racehorse? 3. “Churchill Downs Racetrack, Hour 2” features a mid-1960s silver snaffle bit bracelet from which luxury fashion house that started off making leather goods for the horse carriage trade? 4. Which expert, appearing since season one, holds the distinction of being the only appraiser brought to tears by the magnificence and rarity of an item? 5. What record-breaking value did appraiser Leila Dunbar place on an 1871-1872 Boston Red Stockings archive (featuring photographic baseball cards and player letters) brought to the New York City Roadshow in 2014? 6. What item was the appraiser referring to when he told the guest, “Well, sir, you have a national treasure,” after delivering the value of $350,000 to $500,000 in 2001 (and later updated in 2016 to $750,000 to $1 million)?

ANSWERS 1: Three (1998 for Season 3, 2007 for Season 12, 2018 for Season 23) 2: Sir Barton 3: Hermès (Its logo still features a horse and buggy!) 4: Asian arts expert Lark Mason 5: $1 million (The highest ever for a Roadshow sport memorabilia find!) 6: Navajo Ute First Phase Blanket, ca. 1850 — a Roadshow-staff favorite appraisal.

This film, narrated by Morgan Freeman, reveals that Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa portrait is not, in fact, of the Mona Lisa. If that’s the case, who is she? And why did da Vinci paint her? Scientists racing to understand what’s behind the rise of record-breaking megafires across the American West take to the forest, and even a fire lab, in search of answers. The story follows Jean Valjean, a former convict who’s trying to put his old life behind him. He’s pursued by a police captain, Javert, who is determined to bring him to justice. The six-part series, produced by Masterpiece and BBC Studios, was adapted for the screen by Andrew Davies, celebrated for his work on Pride and Prejudice.

Season 2 takes viewers to a thriving Jamestown, where tobacco plantations are booming, delivering the wealth they once promised. The peace, however, doesn’t last long. A terrible crime plunges the colony into disarray, casting a dark cloud over all its inhabitants.

KET helps educators learn how to mix technology with teaching

College students experience video production at KET

In early March, KET was on hand to consult with teachers at the annual Kentucky Society for Technology in Education (KySTE) conference in Louisville. This year, KET’s education staff trained teachers in crafting highquality programs in media arts. These programs incorporate technology such as video production, with elements from dance, drama, music and visual arts. Teachers also learned from KET how to introduce coding to young children, use a green screen for class projects and enrich student research with PBS LearningMedia’s more than 120,000 free digital resources.

For the past three years, Erica Meuser, an English professor at Bluegrass Community & Technical College, has been taking her Humanities 120 class on a field trip to KET to take part in media arts training and get a tour of the station’s production facilities. The class, designated for students studying English as a second language, is a diverse group from countries such as Nepal, Congo, Rwanda and Saudi Arabia. The students spent time in KET’s Media Lab, where they learned video production skills, such as operating a camera and employing a green screen — skills that they’ll then employ in their own video essays as part of their coursework, Meuser said. “This is their favorite field trip so far,” she added. “A lot of them haven’t had a chance to see what happens behind the scenes at a place like KET.”

Join in the family fun at the Louisville Bats Families are invited to upcoming KET Family Fun Club events this spring and summer at the Louisville Bats baseball games. Bring the kids to the ballpark on the following Sundays: May 12, June 16, July 14 and August 25. Favorite PBS characters like Daniel Tiger, Super Why, Buddy the Dinosaur and Sid the Science Kid will be on hand to greet young fans and pose for pictures. Contact the ballpark for game tickets. As a KET member, you can enroll up to four children or grandchildren in KET’s Family Fun Club and receive event invitations, on-air birthday greetings, and other benefits. Call (800) 866-0366 to add special ones to your gift account.

Inmates in Laurel County continue their education with KET’s FastForward KET is working with the Laurel County Detention Center inmates to help them reach their educational goals. Twice a week, inmates work with an adult education instructor to continue their education, pursuing high school diplomas, workplace skills and trade certifications. The facility employs KET’s FastForward online program, which includes all the materials needed for private study, with much success in helping inmates earn their GED® certificates. “I had tried to get my GED before by going to classes and using workbooks but I never could pass it,” said Gary, an inmate now studying for his National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC). “In here, I was able to use FastForward online and it broke everything down, gave video examples and made things much easier to understand, especially algebra. I passed my GED, and when I get out, I want to go into HVAC work.”
