s a lifelong farmer and businesswoman, Nana Lampton says her approach to corporate life shares much in common with the daily chores she performs on her hay and cattle farm that overlooks the Ohio River in Oldham County. “It’s true — I take the farm with me wherever I go,” said Lampton, the chair and CEO of Hardscuffle, Inc., the holding company for American Life and Accident Insurance Company of Kentucky. “I think we’re so shaped
ing event, Spirits, Sparkles and Spurs. “KET — and public television in general — is very important to our country,” Lampton said. “It’s one of the few outlets that strives to deliver the truth. And that means including the information to back it up.” As an example, she points to KET’s public affairs coverage, which begins this month with in-depth coverage of state and national elections and live election-night coverage on November 3.
“BECAUSE KET TRAVELS TO ALL THE DIFFERENT REGIONS OF KENTUCKY, EXPLORING THE PEOPLE AND THEIR STORIES, IT TEACHES US SOMETHING ABOUT OURSELVES AND OUR STATE.” by the natural unfolding of the seasons and our sense of place. It does so much to inform our cultural values.” Her approach, she said, also explains why she’s a supporter of KET, which year after year does so much to inform Kentuckians about their home state. “KET reflects the many diverse parts of our state,” Lampton said. “Because KET travels to all the different regions of Kentucky, exploring the people and their stories, it teaches us something about ourselves and our state.” Lampton, who sits on several non-profit boards across the state, said she’s happy to devote her time to organizations that benefit Kentucky and its future generations. And KET plays a vital role in the Commonwealth, said Lampton, who is a board member of the Commonwealth Fund for KET, which aids KET in its fundraising efforts, and also served as honorary chair in 2017 for KET’s annual Louisville fundrais-
In particular, Lampton applauds Renee Shaw’s work on Kentucky Tonight, Connections and KET’s townhall forums, adding that Shaw does a “wonderful job revealing the thoughts of the people she interviews.” “Renee is able to get people — even difficult people who have strong disagreements — to sit down at her table and to really talk to one another,” Lampton said. “And she takes great care to present both sides fairly, so that people have information to make up their own minds.” When the farm chores are done for the day, Lampton said she enjoys unwinding before KET’s Masterpiece programs, which, steeped as they are in the social mores of a particular era, offer a chance to learn from history. “They often help us see our own era in a better light,” Lampton said, adding that she’s recently enjoyed Masterpiece’s Endeavour. “That’s one of the things I enjoy about KET’s programming—you can always trust that there will be something there to learn from.”
The unprecedented challenges of 2020 have reaffirmed our commitment to responding to community needs and being available to you and your family. That is why we’re especially honored to have heard from so many of you that you’re watching KET more than ever. During these challenging times, I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our hardworking staff who have kept, and continue to keep, KET available whenever and wherever you want or need us. Whether maintaining our Network Center facilities, servicing our 16 transmitters, scheduling programs on four channels, providing critical health information and important forums, helping teachers and parents with learn-at-home resources, or even creating this very program guide – it’s KET’s team of professionals that brings you the programs you enjoy and rely on 24/7. I’m grateful for their commitment and all they do. Their efforts, and KET’s programs and services, would not be possible without your support. I’m grateful to each of you for watching and supporting KET. We appreciate and thank you for your commitment and contributions that provide funding for the purchase and production of KET’s quality, educational programs. As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, we are reminded that we have much to be grateful for and we thank you for believing in and supporting KET. Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins

Nova: Saving Notre Dame
In 1833 Britain abolished slavery, a defining moment in history, but one that came at a price as 40 percent of the country’s financial budget was used to compensate former slave owners. This two-part series uses meticulously-detailed records to reveal the sheer scale of slavery across all social classes, while also examining the political storm that surrounded abolition and emancipation.
When the roof of the Notre Dame cathedral erupted in flames in April of 2019, firefighters battled for nine grueling hours to save the historic landmark. Still, Paris came within 15 minutes of losing more than 800 years of history. Now engineers are in a different race against time: to rebuild the roof and secure the medieval structure of Notre Dame within five years.

Be My Neighbor Day events provide safe family fun In September, KET welcomed more than 1,400 participants to its two Be My Neighbor Day events in Lexington and Louisville, which were reimagined this year as drivethrough parades to ensure the health and safety of those taking part. The events, sponsored by the PNC Grow Up Great Foundation and Fred Rogers Productions, featured Daniel Tiger, community helpers, and first-responder vehicles. Children received a welcome bag with activities aimed at giving back to their communities. Other sponsors include Kosair Charities, the LG&E and KU Foundation, and the Kentucky Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
KET2 now available in HD KET2 joins the primary KET channel in being delivered in high-definition quality. Additionally, KET KY and KET PBS KIDS channels are now broadcasting in widescreen format. Over-the-air viewers should notice the upgrades immediately. Cable and satellite viewers should check with their provider, as updates may take a few weeks to roll out. Some viewers also may need to review their TV’s settings, updating its “picture setting” or “aspect ratio” to conform with KET’s new widescreen format.
