A UNIFYING FORCE

for KENTUCKY

L

ooking back at his tenure as Kentucky’s budget director (2003-2007), Brad Cowgill recalls how he often explained the challenges of drafting the state budget by pointing to a surprising fact about the Commonwealth. Kentucky, he noted, is one of the most diverse states in the nation — a tapestry of different regions, each with its own geography, cultural history, and economy — which sometimes made it difficult to get the various regions to work together toward a common goal. But it’s that same diversity, he says, that underscores the value of a statewide public television network such as KET. The network’s weekly public affairs programs and live coverage in Frankfort, Cowgill says, serve as a unifying force for those who call Kentucky home. “When I say ‘unifying force’, I’m referring to the fact that we’re all in this together — there are public issues that are going to affect us all,” Cowgill said. “These are things that matter. And KET helps us to understand what these things are so we can engage in a dialogue with our neighbors and our representatives and make the process of democracy work effectively to advance the public good.” The issues facing the state are often complex, Cowgill says. “For the public to engage with

these issues, it helps to have the ideas be organized, analyzed, and simplified so people understand what our options are and the consequences of those options,” Cowgill said. “KET plays that role, and it does it extremely well.” And it’s not only the public that benefits, Cowgill adds. Leaders in Frankfort, he said, consider KET’s public affairs programs to be required viewing. “We all watch those programs for the purpose of understanding how the issues are being analyzed and digested by voters,” he said. “Along the way that helps create a measure of accountability, and that’s always a good thing in a democracy.” Cowgill, a lawyer by trade who now helms a pair of investment firms and serves as chairman of the Board of Visitors at the University of Kentucky’s Martin School of Public Policy and Administration, says KET’s live coverage of the legislature offers an insightful window to the issues of the day. And if you can’t watch live, KET archives all its coverage on its website, he adds. “That’s a wonderful thing because if you’re interested in knowing what the discussion was on a certain day, you can go to KET’s website and look it up,” Cowgill said. “KET creates a public forum that helps the free flow of information. And the effect it has on our state is very positive and very much needed.”

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, we want to extend our sincerest thanks and appreciation to you for watching and supporting KET. Today, our programs and services are as relevant and vital as ever in our more than 50-year history. Our public affairs, history and cultural programming connects and unites communities across the Commonwealth. We’re very proud to have recently brought the story of bluegrass, with its many Kentucky roots, to a national audience. And we hope you’re now enjoying the milestone 25th season of Kentucky Life. Our high-quality early childhood content prepares our youngest citizens for success in school and in life. Our K-12 resources are used in every Kentucky public school. And our growing workplace-readiness services address the needs of today’s job force. Plus, to assist public safety partners, including the National Weather Service, Kentucky State Police, FBI and others, KET’s statewide transmission-tower network helps connect and protect. All of this is thanks to those who believe in and support our mission. Thank you. Sincerely,

Shae Hopkins

KET Executive Director and CEO

This film, which has dominated the documentary awards at film festivals, tells the astonishing and intimate story of 26-year-old Syrian filmmaker Waad al-Kateab, who filmed her life in the rebel-held city of Aleppo through five years of the Syrian uprising. Al-Kateab fell in love, got married and had a daughter all while filming the violence raging around her. Her camera captures stories of loss, laughter and survival as she wrestles with whether to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life.

This four-part documentary series, directed by award-winning filmmaker Lynn Novick, tells the story of a group of prisoners struggling to earn college degrees in one of the most rigorous and effective prison education programs. Shot over four years in New York state prisons, the film takes viewers on a stark and intimate journey into one of the most pressing issues of our time — the failure to provide meaningful rehabilitation for the over two million Americans living behind bars.

KET founder Len Press’ legacy honored at memorial service KET hosted a memorial service for O. Leonard “Len” Press, KET’s beloved founder who passed away on July 31 at the age of 97. The service at the Network Center was attended by several hundred friends, family (including his son, Lowell, below) and colleagues, who paid tribute to his legacy of creating a network to provide quality educational resources to every community in the state.

Volunteers assemble care kits for charities at Be My Neighbor Day KET held its thirdannual Daniel Tiger Be My Neighbor Day in Lexington, thanks to a grant from Fred Rogers Productions in conjunction with PNC Bank. The event provides children and families with ways to give back to their local communities. Participants made cards for the Ronald McDonald House, assembled personal care kits for Project Life and the Hope Center, and put together snack bags for Gavin’s Goodies, which donates food and drinks to pediatric cancer patients at UK’s Hematology/Oncology clinic.

Dani Shapiro, the author of five novels and a series of memoirs, sits down with Robert Siegel, senior host of NPR’s All Things Considered, to discuss her newest book, Inheritance. The story chronicles Shapiro’s search for her identity after she learned, by way of DNA analysis, that her beloved deceased father was not her biological father. Within a few hours of internet sleuthing, Shapiro found a YouTube video of her biological father, which set her off on a quest to unlock her personal story. The book, which quickly became a New York Times best seller, is both a detective story and an examination of the things that make us who we are.

Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum debuts on PBS KIDS

PBS KIDS is launching a new animated series this month: Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum. Based on the children’s book series Ordinary People Change the World by New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer and illustrator Christopher Eliopoulos. The series takes a fresh and accessible approach to teaching kids ages 4-7 about important historical figures— such as Marie Curie, Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson and Alexander Hamilton—and the experiences that shaped their lives, while exploring social emotional concepts and character traits such as courage, resilience, and setting and accomplishing goals.
