Practically since its beginning 50 years ago, KET has proudly showcased Kentucky authors and their work as part of its broader emphasis on Kentucky art and culture. Among the many artists featured by KET is renowned author Bobbie Ann Mason. The author of Shiloh and Other Stories, In Country and more, she grew up in the Western Kentucky town of Mayfield, only 90 miles from Robert Penn Warren’s family home. However, Mason remembers a time when learning about the state’s cultural heritage was not so easy. “In my little town of Mayfield, we didn’t know there were symphonies and plays and literary people alive and not far away,” Mason recalled. “In the 1950s, unless you lived in Lexington or Louisville, you wouldn’t have known.”
ductions are Kentucky Muse, Great Conversations, Connections with Renee Shaw, bookclub@ket, Thomas D. Clark: In His Own Words, Black Women Writers Forum, Living by Words, James Still’s River of Earth, Signature and so many more. A Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame inductee, Mason herself has appeared in KET programs, as well. For KET’s Signature, Mason visited her hometown and talked about the influence of place on her work. The program included readings from Mason’s novels In Country and Feather Crowns as well as several short stories, plus an excerpt from the Hollywood film version of In Country. For Signature Live, Mason and author Ed McClanahan took questions from callers as well as from a studio audience of high school and college students. They discussed the
“KET HAS A HIGH TONE BUT IS LOW KEY, WHICH MAKES IT COMPELLING AND EASY TO GRASP. WE ARE DRAWN INTO IT AND THE RICHES OF OUR CULTURE.” But she thanks KET in part for bringing a greater awareness to Kentucky artists and making both local and national arts more accessible. “KET and PBS offer programing that is informative and culturally rich,” she said. “KET makes the state aware of itself and its history and its leaders and its government, of trends and successes and culture in all sorts of ways. KET fosters learning and reading. KET has a high tone but is low key, which makes it compelling and easy to grasp. We are drawn into it and the riches of our culture.” Among the current and past pro-

writing process and how they earn their livings as writers. Students discovered what nurtured and inspired these successful authors, learned about their daily work habits, and gained insight into how they turn ordinary experiences into novels, plays, and short stories. “I think that by featuring programs about writers, it heightens the sense of literature in our state,” Mason said. “This is a marvelous thing. The culture in Kentucky has expanded and become so much more accessible with organizations like KET.”
October is an exciting month for fans of the written word. PBS is bringing The Great American Read to a close, revealing what America determines is their favorite book (It’s not too late to vote!). We appreciate all the libraries and bookstores – as well as the individual viewers — who’ve participated in this monumental project celebrating the joy of reading. Later this month, KET’s newest documentary will premiere with a look at the life and work of Kentucky-born writer Robert Penn Warren, the only recipient of Pulitzer Prizes in both fiction and poetry. KET is proud of Kentucky’s rich literary heritage and our work through the years, including profiles of author Barbara Kingsolver and playwright George C. Wolfe, who were each the subject of programs in KET’s Signature series that aired nationally on PBS. Other programs have ranged from a biography of James Still, considered the dean of Appalachian literature, to discussions with contemporary writers like Frank X Walker, Sheila Williams, Silas House, and others. And through our annual Young Writers Contest, we’re hopefully encouraging the next generation of great Kentucky writers. As always, happy watching — and happy reading as well! Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins

HAVE YOU VOTED YET?
You have through Thursday, Oct. 18. Go to KET.org/GAR for the full list of books and to vote. The list con-
tains a broad range of titles, authors, time periods, countries, genres and subject matter. It includes books from as far back as the 1600s and as recent as 2016. A Robert Penn Warren documentary from KET premieres IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT KENTUCKIAN ROBERT PENN WARREN CHANGED THE COURSE OF AMERICAN LITERATURE
The prolific poet and novelist, who is best known for the Pulitzer Prize-winning All The King’s Men, was born in 1905 in the small Kentucky town of Guthrie. More than a century later, KET visits Guthrie as part of the new documentary, Robert Penn Warren: A Vision, premiering Monday, Oct. 29 at 9/8 pm on KET. The documentary, which includes previously unreleased home movie footage, examines Warren’s life and career, including his 1947 novel of political corruption loosely based on the life of Louisiana governor and senator Huey P. Long. All The King’s Men was translated into film two years later and won the Academy Award for Best Picture, cementing the writer’s reputation in the public eye. Warren, despite his work as a novelist, journalist and critic over a six-decade career, was primarily known as a poet. The winner of two Pulitzer Prizes for poetry, he was also named U.S. Poet Laureate in 1986.
