shifting lambro Academic Project Milano, Italy 2018 Prof. Antonio Longo Prof. Matteo Motti Re-discover the role of the Lambro along the valley starting from its features. The river Lambro, located in a complex palimpsest where different elements coexist together and define various territories, is nowadays an element in background and for different reasons the opportunities of its Valley are hidden and underused. Understanding such a large and complex territory is extremely necessary to describe and analyze its features that characterize the Valley and to define some urban questions. These questions are the starting point to define a concept and a strategy for the Valley, where water is identified as the resource to rediscover the river and to think for new development. Three sub-strategies are set according to the different roles that water can play in the strategical areas to define a multi-scale approach and a long term vision. So it is possible to offer scenarios of some strategical areas as examples of strategy’s development to define the new palimpsest of the valley, in which the river and its features will have a central role.
04
The new asset for the Valley of Lambro structured by a series of common features that come from the former issues of the Valley; and the three strategical areas (Cascinazza, Rubattino, Melegnano) that have been selected to present scenarios are considered as strong examples of three real different pilot projects (according to their position, their own features and their relationships with the river) to demonstrate that the river has interesting nodes that can be the opportunity to rediscover the Valley. This project tries to focus the attention on simple but important issues: it wants to be based on the features that characterize the valley and to propose a flexible, multi-scale and long- term approach. The Valley will be not only an important geographical element of the Region but a system on which people can enjoy and deal with the river, rediscover also cultural, historical and social values of the complex territory in which the river is based.

“To Lambro” is proposed as strong and structural interventions related to the transformations area (AT) that are spread in the Valley. They are a huge opportunity to rethink their position, their functions and their relationships with the urban surroundings through water management.

The peri-agricultural land - Cascinazza The Villoresi and the system of agricultural fields along the canal and along the Lambro could be a huge opportunity to enhance this periagricultural reality in the metropolitan area. The relationship between the river and the cascinas could be a strong element to increase the economic aspects related to the agriculture but also to increase social and cultural aspects, related to the presence of some leisure areas in the urban areas close to Monza

The strategical area of Rubattino appears as a node where the relationship between the city and Lambro is strong (the river, thanks to the presence of leisure areas close to it, plays an active role as connector) and at the same time as a node at the larger scale, working as a door for the north-south and east-west connections in the metropolitan system.

Enhancing the relationships between some cascinas through the reuse of water as the opportunity to deal with Lambro could improve the economic and social value of some places. The use of water collected from flood risk and its reuse for irrigation is an economic opportunity, while the food production and the agricultural activities could enhance social relationships between casinas and citizens.

Towards Eco-District... Academic Project Milano, Italy 2017 Prof. Balducci Alessandro Prof. Bruzzese Maria Antonella
The project area, Porto di Mare, is located in the south-east part of Milan, at the border between the edge of the city and the rural and agricultural countryside. The area has faced multiple problems during the years and the area is still affected by bad stigma today. The area has been exposed to illegal activities and occupation, environmental pollution and besides, there are big barriers that distance the area from its adjacent neighbourhoods in the east. The area is under environmental degradation, it is an area with the impression of insecurity and it is an area with a scarcity of services. For this, the strategic vision is to develop Porto di Mare as a Strong centrality. The objective is to create functions and vibrant spaces that support Eco-Social activities within the area as well as new users of spaces. Three strategies have been derived to achieve strategic vision; to develop, to secure and to preserve.
12
‘To develop’ is aiming to improve an area with degraded buildings, insufficient services, and transportation systems, the strategy formed was of a well-covering scale, with the focus to introduce new qualitative spaces and services. ‘To secure’ is to provide a solution to eliminate the existent prejudice, intervened both physically and mentally. The strategy is formed to enhance safety and security, while also eliminating the bad stigma. ‘To preserve’ is related to several environmentally related problems, to preserve micro-climates in the area, to provide a multifunctional solution and to develop green and blue infrastructure. This project tries to focus on future vision with the hope to transform Porto di Mare into a safe area where people want to be and can fulfill their daily needs. Porto di Mare will become a new eco-district which provide its surroundings with important green nature and services.

INTEGRATED COMMUNITY HOUSING B.Arch. Thesis Mumbai, India 2015 Prof. Anand Achari
The aim is to demonstrate a design solution that generates the opportunities of the ‘LIVE-WORK-PLAY’ model for integrated community living. Our world is changing. Globalisation has shifted cultural specificities. It has transformed communication networks and has radically changed the population density, diversity and economy of our cities. At the same time, modern advances in science, technology, and industry have significantly influenced the way we live, how long we live and where we live. Many developing countries are experiencing rapid urban growth due to their high economic growth rate. Architects, urban designers, theorists and artists all over the world are responding to the explosion of urbanism. Some are examining how we live and the effects of our urban environments. Many are imagining new forms of cities, which are socially democratic, promote social cohesion and which respond to the urgent need to create sustainable environments. By proposing such a program it is believed that buildings, residences, shops, and services built in close proximity of each other, enable more efficient use of services and resources thus creating a more convenient and enjoyable place to live.

MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT OPENIDEAS LLP Baroda, Gujarat, India 2015 -
The aim is to build an urban hybrid development proposal that combines characteristics of city dwelling ‒ privacy with the characteristics of suburban life, gardens, a neighborhood mixed-use community. Environmental, economic, and cultural sustainability are foundational elements of the project. The project consists of 160 apartments of 4 different types and 720 twin bungalows. A cohesive landscaping plan foresees a wide variety of fruit trees in the courtyard, in both the private and public areas. An important aspect of the project is the high quality of construction in combination with relatively low prices. Clients will be able to buy a more or less finished house ‒ comparable to the basic model of a new car ‒ with options leading up to almost fully fit and finish possible. Homeowners with little money can, therefore, delay investment and still live in high quality, new build home.

For us, this space was sustaining itself for the past five decades. Initially, as an industrial warehouse (established in 1959), then as an artist’s workshop and a graphic design studio till 2017. time but the project was flexible enough to adapt to the ever-changing requirements. Hence sustainability in terms of design and resources were already a pivotal part of the project, and all we did was enhance its existing spatiality to continue its legacy as a productive building,” Sakaria says. The positive trajectory curve in this project was the client who is a visionary artist/graphic designer in the region of Saurashtra. He is strongly inspired by Saurashtra’s rich culture of art and craft and realised that very few platforms expose them for appreciation amongst other artists and residents. “Our designs were based on this very idea and it became easy for us to recognise this heritage structure as an exhibit itself. We decided to celebrate this existing ambience, which led to a minimal approach of design that also incorporated utilising existing material and resources around the site,” Panelia says. The major challenge of this project for them was to keep a check on the design interventions, as even the slightest change could have desolated the existing ambience. Repair work and modifications were finished within a strict timeline and budget and the gallery turned out to be an inspirational space for artists and creative people.
