In many locations, the trees are already bare and the days are becoming ever-shorter. Winter will be upon us soon… snow, ice, cold. A few sunny days interspersed with wind and grey skies… As the colour drains away from nature, we see the dull brown landscape morphing into the stark black and white world we will live with for the next several months. Yet we still catch glimpses of the beauty and occasional sunshine of autumn whilst we slowly prepare for winter. However, we can look forward to a busy day on Saturday 5th November. A trip down to the Craft Fayre to do some early Christmas shopping, then over to the bonfire and fireworks at the Rec. Bonfire night; the 5th has always been a useful reminder for me that it’s my mums birthday the following day, and at 97 years old there have been plenty of occasions to remember!

I find it fascinating speaking to people of such an age, their experiences and memories remind me of what they have passed through, often for our benefit. This month is of course the time we particularly remember with affection those that gave their lives for our future. The Lord Jesus only had a short life but nevertheless fulfilled his purpose and asked we remember him for it. The communion is for that purpose, he said “do this in remembrance of me,” the bread and wine speaking of his life and sacrificial death for us.

Ministers comments... November; a time of remembrance, whether its Guy Fawkes or reflections on the sad loss of human life during times of war. One thing is for sure, our world continues to reflect the same uncertainties and sadnesses that it has done over many years. It is reassuring to be able to reflect on the certainty of the words of Jesus in John 14:2527; 15:7-12. I'd like to draw your attention to three words he used the evening before he died. “My peace I give to you” “abide in my love” and “that my joy may be in you”. My Peace, My Love, My Joy. All of which are precious gifts that Jesus has left for us. Galatians 5 says “the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace…” given to his disciples as precious gifts from the Lord Jesus and made real day by day through the working of his Holy Spirit in their hearts. Let's look at them individually in the order in which the Lord Jesus referred to them. MY PEACE “Peace I leave with you my peace I give to you.” It's a double peace. Interesting because Isaiah 26:3 says “You keep those in perfect peace whose minds are fixed on you...” ‘Perfect peace’, the thought being ‘peace, peace’. In the upper room following his resurrection, Jesus said “Peace be with you,” and repeated it again saying “peace be with you.” The peace he leaves with us, is the peace he has secured through the blood of his cross. It's ours, he left it for us, peace with God. Being justified by faith we have peace with God. Then he says “My peace I give to you,” it's a very emphatic word! It's his own personal peace he gives. The first a legacy and the second a gift. The world’s gifts have to do with material things that affect the body. The world hasn't got real peace and it cannot give what it hasn't got. The world gives and takes away again, but Christ gives for a lasting blessing. MY LOVE “Abide in my love.” John 15:9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.” This introduces us to a tremendous truth. How did the Father love his Son? Eternally, “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” All the love of his heart lavished on his Son. “The Son of his love.” Denotes a relationship of the deepest intimacy and affection.

Nov2022.qxp_Outllook2019 19/10/2022 22:09 Page 7

“I also have loved you” and that fact can never be disputed, for it was declared for all to see when he laid down his life for us. Verse 13 says, “greater love has no man than this…” He loved us despite all our unloveliness. The great sacrificial love of Calvary which suffers long and is kind, which seeks not its own, which never fails. This love has been shed abroad in our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Notice four loves in this portion The Father’s love for his Son. The Son’s love for us. Our responsive love for him, and Our love for one another. MY JOY. “That my joy may be in you and that your joy may be fulfilled.” Not that his joy and ours are separate experiences, but in the sense of John 17:13 “But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.” The Lord Jesus spoke more about joy as he drew nearer to the cross than ever he had before. Joy that is not dependant upon circumstances. It is a joy in the Lord. “Rejoice in the Lord always,” said St Paul from his prison confinement. It is a joy in Jesus and as he is unchanging, so is the joy. Joy is a gentle flower that flourishes between love and peace. Take away the peace and the joy is gone, take away the love and it disappears again. The Lord Jesus indicates that by the way he speaks, “these things have I spoken to you that my joy may be in you….” Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Every Blessing Kevin Hickling

Gifts for Gardeners Question: When can being a keen gardener be like collecting penguins? Answer: At Christmas. Every year my wife (who does collect penguins) gets several more penguin ornaments to add to her collection. Every year I will get some useless tat marketed as a “gift for gardeners”. You know the stuff: colourcoordinated trowels and forks, mugs with worms on them, and t-shirts with “I’m sexy and I mow it” emblazoned across them. I’m sure someone appreciates them. And I’m also sure I’ve probably been guilty of sending them to my parents in the past. So this year, perhaps go for a useful garden gift; here are my ideas. Dunlop Garden Clog (£12.99 from Amazon and many other retailers) Waterproof, good thick grippy sole and easy to slip on and off. A bit cold in winter, but ideal for the rest of the year. Warren Hoe (about £35 from www.gaywaysltd.co.uk/bulldogwarren-hoe-p8535) A very useful hoe, I use mine a lot for making rows for planting seeds. The Buckhoe (£25.50 from https://buckhoe.co.uk/) (pictured next to a larger onion hoe) Invented and made in England, this innovative tool is only available from the website above. I assume it is handmade by the inventor. It’s the ideal tool for weeding around plants like onions and asparagus. It’s quite small compared to an onion hoe, but this makes slicing through weeds much easier. It’s also very useful for weeding between paving slabs, down the sides of raised beds, in pots, etc. 12

The Hori Hori Knife

(£30 from https://www.japeto.co.uk/products/weeding/horihori-knife-deluxe-leather-holster)

(pictured next to an old trowel). This is not a new invention, being a traditional Japanese garden tool. Since my wife bought me one this year (yes, I did get a useful gardening gift!) I have not picked up my old garden trowel. Part trowel, part knife it does all the tasks a trowel will do with the advantage of being able to chop and saw, so very useful when weeding. The strong blade can also be used to lever deep rooted weeds out of the ground. It’s also useful when dividing plants, as it can be used to dig out the plant and then cut as required. Opinel No.8 Garden Knife (about £12 from many retailers, e.g. Whitby and Co.) A foldable knife, just the right size to fit in your pocket. I am never without mine when I’m in the garden. Just remember to leave it at home when going to the shops! Sharpal 105N Multipurpose Pocket Knife and Garden Tool Sharpener (£12.99 from Amazon)

Another very useful device which conveniently fits into a pocket. Can be used to sharpen most (non- serrated) garden tools. Sharpens surprisingly well for such a small thing. Please note I am not affiliated with any of the websites above. I have purchased and use all the tools, and do not receive commission. North Wiltshire Villages Flower Club A fitting end to summer was a demonstration in August by Margaret Heal entitled ‘Inspirations’. Margaret, from Somerset, mainly used locally grown flowers to create varied styles of arrangement in unusual, vibrant and dramatic colour combinations reflecting the warmth of that season. We held our AGM on 21st September and swiftly concluded the necessary business aspects. Our finances remain strong, and membership is growing, though still a little below pre-pandemic levels. Afterwards there was an interesting talk and demonstration by Fiona Porter of Cotswold Country Flowers entitled ‘Growing and using British flowers in a sustainable way’. Fiona is a Gloucestershire florist who grows and sells flowers from her plot near Dursley. We saw first-hand how beautiful these can be, especially when grouped together in a hand tied bouquet. At the beginning of October a few members participated in a South West Area (SWA) Presidents Training Day held at Royal Wootton Bassett entitled ‘Flower Arranging is Fun’, which it was! Similar events will be held next year and are suitable for all levels of ability. Our October meeting features a demonstration by Pam Lewis entitled ‘Autumn Opulence’. Then on the 16th November we are holding a ‘Christmas Workshop’, with (an early!) seasonal drink. A list of materials for participants to bring will be available on our website. We are a friendly and enthusiastic club with a varied programme of workshops, demonstrations, social events and visits, all incorporating flowers in some shape or form. Meetings normally take place at Crudwell Village Hall (SN16 9HB) on the third Wednesday evening of the month (7pm for 7.30pm), and include a raffle and refreshments. Visitors and potential new members are very welcome. We can be contacted by email at nwvflowerclub@gmail.com. For more information, including our new programme for 2023 which has just been published, visit our website - https://northwiltshirevillagesflowerclub.co.uk or our Facebook page. 14

Nov2022.qxp_Outllook2019 19/10/2022 22:09 Page 16

EXTINCTION IS FOR EVER NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS A 15 year study in France and Croatia found that Blue Tits are actually losing their bright colours due to climate change, the temperature having risen by 1.23 C and rainfall is down by 0.64mm in that period of time. As colouration is of paramount importance in attracting partners, researchers believe that this may create a fall in the number of chicks being born. In July 2022 research by the University of Sheffield found that birds in general are actually growing bigger beaks, thought to be an attempt to help control their body temperatures. According to last year's RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch no less than 16 of the top 20 species have declined since the previous year's survey. Those beautiful birds, Turtle Doves, have become victims of industrialised farming because arable weeds they feed on are being destroyed by chemicals and the Doves are now a staggering 98% down in numbers since 1970. The Chaffinch was always in the top five most common birds in Britain until five years ago but there are now far less of them. Greenfinch population is now red listed and of critical concern because of a parasite that now seems to be spreading to the Chaffinch. Hen Harriers are nearly 40% down in numbers and because they predate grouse have become victims of illegal persecution. There is strong evidence that they are being poisoned, trapped and shot by the grouse-shooting industry. Hen Harriers have been satellite tracked and a disproportionate number disappear on grouse moor. The RSPB do secure prosecutions on occasion but only a small fine is ever handed out. Sorry, it gets worse, there are now approximately only 140 thousand Red Squirrels, none at all in many parts of the UK, and if current trend continues they will be extinct in ten years time. Red squirrels are killed by the squirrel-pox virus transmitted by Grey squirrels so there is an argument for culling the Greys, but only where the Reds still survive. The Hazel Dormouse is down by 51% since 2000 mainly due the reduction of woodland and hedgerows where they live. At around 13 per cent the UK has one of the least amounts of woodland in Europe and only two per cent of our ancient woodlands are left. The Government has plans for more trees but these need to be native broadleaf varieties. The list goes on, hedgehogs down 50% in the past twenty years suffering because of a loss of habitat and the use of rodenticides, put out to control rats, which the hedgehogs are liable to eat. Even the common Adder, down 90% in eleven years partly due to dry grassland being dug up and the huge numbers of pheasants released for shooting every year driving down our reptile populations as Pheasants kill and eat reptiles including adders. The Adder is another species which could become extinct by 2030. 16

Chris Packham says “There have been positive messages about trebling the number of trees planted, but need to be those that encourage native species to thrive. The Government has put forward a plan to provide subsidies to farmers who are more ecologically conscious, which in principle should incease the number of wild meadows and hedgerows that will support diversity. British farming is a tough business to be in, facing demands from dominant supermarkets for ever lower prices. But our farmers need the support of consumers because they will not feel inclined to dig ponds and set aside acreage if they have no spare cash. A lot of food producers in this country do great work and we need to back them at the checkout, it is worth paying attention to which products support regenerative or organic farming” I also read with interest that in West Blean and Thornden Woods near Canterbury, Kent a Matriarch and two young female Bison have been released, believed to be the first in the British Countryside for 30,000 years, another species that once occupied Britain. It is hoped that they will help restore the eco-system attracting new species and fertilising the land by their habits of grazing, eating bark, felling trees and opening up the dense canopy creating light and space. Nature always works best (and helps us) by doing it's own “thing”. Steve Reay

The latest sad news for the UK is confirmed that " Two people are diagnosed with Parkinson's each hour of each day, every day." The Parkinson's UK (PUK) - Cricklade cafe meets on the third Wednesday of each month, at The Cricklade Club, High Street SN66AY - 10:30 - 12:00 and all with Parkinson's (wherever you live) and their carers are always welcome to attend if they wish. We are a friendly social group, providing support, answers and more questions. Great drinks and cakes are availabe to purchase. We are extremely grateful that The Cricklade Club have provided us with such a great venue and happy staff to make us feel more than welcome. At our September Cricklade cafe, thirty six people attended, including four new visitors. We are now regularly hosting expert visitors who come and talk to the visitors by mingling amongst us and helping further with those endless questions? October 19th PUK Cricklade Cafe, we welcome Rachel Gardner, Lead Parkinson's Disease Nurse Specialist from GWH Swindon. December 21st PUK Cricklade Cafe, we will once again be visited by Ashley Harris, Community Connector from Carer Support Wiltshire. Other regular key visitors do appear unannounced and they are always welcomed too including PUK Head Office or Branch and / or PUK committee members and Volunteers from Malmesbury, Cirencester, Shrivenham and Swindon. We look forward to seeing our visitors, both regulars or new faces at a future PUK - Cricklade Cafe. No need to book, just turn up when it suits you to get there and you will receive a warm welcome. If you do have any questions regarding the above, please contact: parkinsonscafecricklade@gmail.com or call Vincent on 07951 944760

GUIDE DOGS UK/BLIND CHILDREN I have quite a sad, but more importantly, cautionary tale to tell. About 80% of guide dog owners still retain some vision which can sometimes cause a dilemma for the owner of the dog as they may find themselves leading the dog instead of being led by it. A very good friend of mine found himself in such a situation and has bravely agreed to give voice to the problems caused partly of his own (but not necessarily conscious) making. A guide dog's training teaches that focus and enthusiasm to get from “A” to “B” safely and without delay or distraction is of paramount importance. During “lockdown” many dog owners, by choice or neccessity, did not get out and about as much as they would have done before and the dog(s) in question were not required to carry out their normal activities as regularly as usual, thereby losing that focus and enthusiasm that their training gave them. When called upon to fully “resume” these tasks the dogs were liable to resort to their former selves – i.e. dawdling and sniffing, two things they had been specifically trained not to do. My friend freely admits that previously he was, on occasion, guilty of “guiding the guider” and now in common with many other owners found himself pulling/tugging the lead in order to re-focus the dog's attention, the latter having lost it's focus and enthusiasm for the task in hand. A member of the public noted that all was not well and contacted Guide Dogs, who quickly established that several conditions including inactivity during Covid lockdown and my friend's earlier misdemeanours had contributed to the fact that the dog now found it difficult to carry out it's duties safely as original intended and sadly after five years of faithful devotion had to be retired three years early. The effects are far reaching for my friend, who's sight is deteriorating all the time, and for his wife, who is now again fully responsible for his safely in getting out and about, and it may be some time before another dog is available. The retired dog, who is fit and well, a good companion with a friendly disposition and great character has been found a loving home locally and will enjoy several more years of “just being a dog”.

E-Scooters have become more common especially in areas offering rental opportunities however as they are almost silent people with sight loss have little or no warning of their approach and even a “near miss” can rob them of their confidence to go out independently. Research has shown that 72% of those with a sight impairment encountering an e-scooter have had a negative experience. Guide Dogs Campaigning Team are working pro-actively to address the safety concerns. On a happier note we finally got to meet Oreo, the puppy named by Tracey and family at Dauntsey Farm Shop under the Guide Dogs “name a puppy” scheme. Oreo, a black Labrador, now six months old visited us at the Farm Shop with her puppy raisers. The three of them will be together for approximately fourteen months and then Oreo will start the next part of her journey by going to Training School for about four or five months. The photo shows Oreo trying to teach Tracey have to “sit” - may take a while! We will follow Oreo's progress and sincerely hope in about twenty months time she will qualify and be able to change someone's life for the better, helping them move forward with more freedom, enjoyment and fulfilment. The second Artisan Market was held at the Farm Shop on Saturday 24th September with twelve stalls attending and Yvonne and I joined in with a Guide Dogs stall. The money raised on our stall together with stall fees means another £170 has been added to Tracey's second name a puppy fund now standing at £631. We will be holding our Guide Dogs Christmas themed Tom-bola stall at Malmesbury High Street's late night shopping event on Friday 2nd December and hope to see you all there on the night. Only one more Outlook before Christmas. Stay healthy - Yvonne and Steve

Church Progress

Freedom Church, Wiltshire, a part of the Free Methodist Church UK, will meet in Brinkworth Village Hall on the second and fourth Sunday each month from October 2022. When we felt that God was calling us to plant ‘Freedom Church Wiltshire’ back in the autumn of 2021 we were uncertain where this would lead but felt that we must be obedient to this call. Having, with the nation, been through the difficult period and in the post-pandemic, we were aware of a number of people who were either not attending a church and wanted to do so or had expressed an interest in exploring new ways of embracing contemporary and traditional worship with a strong emphasis on Bible teaching and a space to listen to what God is saying. It was at that time that Freedom Church, Bristol offered to support us in becoming a Free Methodist Church in our own right. It was After much prayer, and investigation, we took them up on this offer and things began to move fast. We prayed that God would bless this venture and suddenly we were provided with the financial support and equipment needed to launch. The Brinkworth Village Hall is a wonderful venue for our meetings and, after six months of services and meetings with always a good number of regulars and visitors, we are now ready to take the next step. From October 2022 Freedom Church, Wiltshire will meet for four Sundays each month twice in Brinkworth and once in each of Highworth Community Centre and Wanborough Village Hall (see full page advertisement for dates). We have been invited to Bristol at 10.30 a.m. on 16th October 2022 for a joint service with Freedom Church Bristol (Kingswood Estate, Britannia Road, BS15 8DB) when we will celebrate our commissioning as a full recognised Church within the Free Methodist Church UK. Transport is provided and if anyone would like to join us for that time in Bristol please call or text 07885 662772 and we will share the details. We would like to thank the many from Brinkworth who have support us, both in prayer and other practical ways during the infancy of enabling this return of the Methodist tradition to the village. We also express our gratitude to Rev. Mike Graham and the folk of St. Michael and All Angels for their welcome and allowing us to join with them in giving God the glory. We are now open to ways in which Freedom Church Wiltshire can further benefit and serve Brinkworth. Do contact us or just turn up if you would like to join us for any of our regular services. Bollard Obstructions on Road-side Verges

Over the last months it has been noted that more and more residents are placing stones, rocks or notices outside their houses on the grass verges. As long as this is on your registered property there is no problem, but mostly it is on land that belongs to Highways. This is a reminder that placing objects by the roadside to deter cars and lorries is dangerous, often unsightly and should not be done. There are also possible insurance implications for you connected with using these means to keep cars off Highways land. Wiltshire County Council have advised us that they have received complaints regarding these obstructions and asked that we remind you that they be removed as soon as possible before they become an enforcement issue. Recreation Field Car Park

It has been noted that a lot of cars are using the recreation ground car park for general parking. This is not a public car park and should only be used by people using the recreation ground. Thank you for your understanding. bdoutlookmagazine@gmail.com

The Brinkworth and Dauntsey Garden Club At the B&DGC we have been so fortunate to be able to visit some stunning local gardens over the summer; thanks so much to all our fantastic hosts. To mark the end of the summer and the start of autumn we decided to go ahead with our annual day out; having had to miss it for the last two years. After a lot of discussion, we chose to go to RHS Wisley and what a fantastic day we had. The two-hour journey sped by and we were in the gardens by 10:45. It was really good to be joined by some people who we haven’t seen at the club before. What a truly beautiful place. You walk in to be greeted by a stunning water garden which alone would have been worth the journey. We were so impressed by the variety of specimens and the neatness of the place without it looking too formal. The drought didn’t appear to have affected the gardens at all with an abundance of colour and perfume. Every plant was well labelled so you knew exactly what you were looking at. The glass house was overflowing with plants from near and far and the lakes were truly amazing. We went on the last day of the flower show which was super because we were able to go into the dahlia marquee to see the most incredible display of stunning dahlias. There was also a Living Art display with floristry as I’ve never seen before. All this, not to mention the rather good deals on plants, which most of us took advantage of. The gardens are huge and I’m not at all sure that we saw all of it – what a good excuse to go back! Our first Autumn speaker was Claire Mellor-Hill from Delicious Dauntsey. During lockdown Claire discovered a love for making jams and chutneys and we were lucky enough to taste her wares. I think we all went home truly inspired to get cooking! In November (3rd) we will be welcoming Gemma Russell who is going to give us a talk on growing flowers ethically. Judging by Gemma’s beautiful bouquets; this promises to be a fascinating talk. bdoutlookmagazine@gmail.com

the game and fry for 3-4 minutes, until starting to turn golden, stirring constantly to prevent the meat from sticking. Pour in the wine and add the bay leaf, carrots, and mushrooms. Cover, transfer to the oven and cook for 4550 minutes. Towards the end of the cooking time, Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan and add the whole, peeled shallots. Fry for 3-4 minutes until golden. Remove the stew from the oven and add the shallots. Return to the oven and cook for a further 25-30 minutes, until the meat is tender, and the vegetables are cooked. Place the cabbage in a steamer and cook for 4-5 minutes, until softened but still retaining some bite. Place in a serving dish. Melt the butter and crushed juniper berries together in a small saucepan over a low heat. Drizzle the butter over the cabbage, season and serve with the game stew and a pile of creamy mash.
