ONTOLOGY OF A VOID : THE MAKING OF A HYPERCOMMODITY

The festival of Lord Ganesh has been a rather facinating one fueled by the questions of its Simulations and Simulacra , The Object that is the idol has taken the form of a HYPERCOMMODITY and urges the architecture and built environment to change its ontological appearance for the 11 days of its festivities. The aim of the Thesis was to Predict what infrastructure would a HYPERCOMMODITY such as the idol of Lalbaug require and speculate a future for its festivities , its politics and its ontology. Thus we arrive at Ontology of a Void the making of a Hypercommodity.

HOUSING : THE HOUSE THAT GREW

The essence of housing starts with the problem of the word incremental .One often seeks to find meaning in architectural elements and create almost a gestaltian answer of summing up the parts concluding the whole is greater than the sum of its parts , exploring such answers in architectural tectonics has become a major driving force in housing projects the value for economics and construction has taken over . sustainability has taken over. We seem to be loosing the essence of the problem and mixing the free willingness of architectural elements to create a house.

on growth INSPIRATION STRIKES AT THE MOST UNUSUAL OF SITUATIONS . THE MAJOR CONCEPT OF “GROWTH” WAS DEVELOPED AS AN INITIAL CONCEPT.THE IDEA WAS SIMPLE . WHY NOT LET THE TENANTS GROW EXTENSIONS TO THEIR HOUSES LIKE BIOMORPHING THEIR HOUSES.HE TREES GROWN AS ARCHITECTURE WOULD NOT ONLY PROVIDE A STRUCTURAL ELEMENT BUT ALSO AN ELEMENT THAT WILL SERVE PURPOSE TO THE MICRO CLIMATE AROUND THE HOUSE . ELEMENTS SUCH AS INDOOR FURNITURE CAN THEN BE GROWN ALONG SIDE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS.

A RESORT OF SORTS

Divide into 3 parts this projects deals with 3 modern day necessities that urge human civilization to build a resort and inhabit it for their commodified needs. A Love Hotel , A Park and an architypal Resort. Each of these units have a Common kitchen , A small garden and pools . The idea is to sell a commodity in order to simplify why a resort is needed in the first place. Do we relax , procreate , fornicate or sleep . These are the questions that one must provide while building a resort . Apart from the divisions the resort in its aesthetic and visual mass seeks to be sublime in order to spark only the needs of the person and not a form induced feeling of anything. The patrons are incouraged to grow , sleep and even claim happiness within the resort.

GAUDI BOX

Antoni gaudis works could be considered as an unusual formal transformation of grids and structural logics of nature. His bone gothic structures bring about an interesting way of segmenting grids. Many a times he refered to the onset of nature as the driver of from and not a higher entity. His trust in natural ways of form finding would lead him down a path which could allow him to perform transformations in form to an extent that his structures seemed to be grown. The project involved the formal movement of grids to attain a form. This form was to be then worked upon further by adding the factorts of pulling or pushing certain points on set grid.

This project aims to investigate the spatial authority of architecture when a second interior is introduced in the form of inflating media bubbles .The expansion of the media bubbles within the box create a second interiors . Taking a picture or recording a memory near or around the box can turn fatal . Skylights and walls start to now depict the world around it leaving the creation of the second interior and the second skin, not in the hands of the architecture but the social life we live.

JAIN MUSEUM

The Jain Museum Project is a private competition held by the Jain religious community to host a contemporary museum depicting Jain Philosophy and teachings through interactive media both audio and visual , a large park and auditoriums and artifacts for the education of people towards the Jain culture. The attainment of Moksha or the Path to Nirvana is a popular exploration amongst the jain philosophy and thus we used the narrative to create a path where one enters through the entrance with just a glimpse of the landscape and water body and then exit out through the water body to admire the beauty of nature and its lessons.

IIFLW : OFFICE INTERIORS The IIFLW Interior project is a high profile interior project with a requirement to rebrand the entire company office to better suite modern contemporary offices and provide a non imbracive HVAC system . We went for Radiant Cooling systems and worked on making them Sleek elements for the ceiling as well as partitions , These fins absorb body heat and allow natural cooling rather then the draft / AC system. The Project involved a series of meeting rooms placed in a curve , a general office plan with tables and phone booth units , discussion rooms and a gaming and recreation area. The entrance was also made much lighter and the whole aim was to uplift the companies architecture elements to a sleek and simple aesthetic

MYTHICAL POLITICS : A NARRATIVE FROM THE CITY

Mythical Politics is a tale about the city and the unusual objects that inherit its geography. The story starts with the daily routine of a domestic maid and how she views life as a cosmic consequence, right from her imagined cosmic birth to her cosmic self . themes of becoming a religious figure , gender politics , object oriented ontology as well as themes of mythology are explored to realize this cosmic consequence. The story breaches the fabric of understanding that we have become the ontology of the objects around our geography , we have become the ideologies of our urban. in a search for ourselves we have given a reason to believe in myth. maybe architecture should explore these myths or what we call cosmic consequence.

STONES ONTOLOGICAL MEMORIES OF ARCHITECTURE

Architecture embeds its essence into its materials and its objects , one such object that would go on to affect the memories of most middle class indian families is the story of the terrazo tile . its rampant and wide spread use in housing projects and government housing projects from the late 80’s to the early 90’s have left a significant mark on its users and occupants. most recall its texture , and some even its visual property . this stone has become a memory of architectural narratives of the indian context and remains embodied in our architectural thoughts.

STRANGE GEOGRAPHIES AND ITS CHARACTERS Mumbai is a context that survives on the potency of each program it houses. The City has been a spectacle of images , memories and even had Mark Twain talking about its crows and Rudyard Kipling about its Narratives. Mumbai serves as an ontological playground for architecture as its aesthetics , programs and visual mass is something that has still not been tapped as a source of rich architectural built forms. Graphically exploring the conditions of the characters , narratives and programs i hope to come up with an architecture and an aesthetic much awaited by Mumbai.

MORSELO

This Project is a exploration into trying to understand what is of importance in a project . The Program , The Clients vision , The Architects Vision. Weighing down these terms and conditions we decided to make sure that in no way the Interior s done by us would over power the food thus sublime back grounds were choosen with graphics of the food and a pattern based on the logo was decided . The Furniture came from a decision to double the intake and the selection of a circular table opened up the space allowing additional seatings to be added .The Achievement of this project is the architecture not overpowering the Program and the rise of the rating of the ambience of the resturant on food review websites.

This Project was an exploration where the role of the architect was replaced by the role of the friend, the psychoanalyst and the graphic designer. The end result is a product without any drawings but a concept based on a no waiter ceiling conveyer system. This system is a series of chains with gears and chains fitted at appropriate intervals . These chains are low enough for the hand to tag the order and high enough to not invade personal space. The concept is available to the public as a installation and a spectacle .
