Trinity Buoy Wharf project.

Trinity Buoy Wharf research Owned by the London Docklands Development Corporation, Trinity Bouy Wharf is a long-lived creative site which has developed from the empty, derelict area it once was in 1998 and prior. This area has created many opportunities for people due to its large open space. The main purpose for this site is to provide artists studios and gallery space, rehearsal rooms, café and diner. However not much development to the site has been made. There are many flaws like wasted space for the car park which could be changed into a seating area for the public. Small cafes can also be placed around/close to the river in replacement of the car park.

There are two main attractions to the Trinity Buoy Wharf. ‘Container city’ and the ‘lighthouse’. The lighthouse is the oldest building to made in the site. Being built in 1864, this is the only standing lighthouse left in London and also making it one of the few left in the whole UK. The site is located next to the river Thames and is across from the O2.

For nearly 200 years the lighthouse was mainly used as a lighthouse dock, storage facility and also testing for new lighthouse technologies.

Primary Trinity Buoy Wharf research

Plan view:

This is called 'container city'. It is one of the main attractions of Trinity Buoy Wharf as it uses bright vibrant colours to bring people towards it. The building also is a one of a kind in the site as its more modern and unique looking than the other dull outdated structures.

The city is right next to the lighthouse however it doesn't match much therefore a similar building next to it may be needed.

Main colours used:

The structure primarily uses containers in a combined fashion to create an odd building. The building is also very geometric and rigid like with its sharp corners and the use of rectangles in a conjoint way.

The building uses very dull colours which may be due to the age or how in 1864 there were limited resources to choose from, unlike now.

Being one of the oldest buildings in Trinity Buoy Wharf, it is very strong and sturdy due to the use of hard and strong materials like bricks and metal. This shows how well built the building is as most structures from this long ago are not functioning.

Uses very geometric shapes like a large triangle to create a roof.

Gardens by the bay:

This is a very interesting design as it uses the nature around it like the trees and plants to blend in even though it is a manmade structure. It can be useful in Trinity Buoy Wharf as it can bring colour and nature which Trinity lacks. Colours used:

There are multiple walkways around the design which are high around the structure.

Each of the towers are split into two parts. The top half represents the leaves and petals of a flower, and the bottom half represents the roots.

Within Trinity Buoy Wharf the best place to put these structures would be in the open space in the entrance. This is because it can give the people visiting a great first impression and will give them an idea to how the rest of the site will look.

The base of the object will be very circular, and this will follow through until the top halve to where it will become more geometric.

Thames barrier park: This is a very interesting design as it uses different layers of grass to create a curved structure which is inside different 'caved in' sections.

This is a good area to use for inspiration for trinity as its next to the river Thames just like Trinity Buoy Wharf

Each section of grass creates a mountain like structure. This gives the impression that it's like a small town of mountains which shows it to look like a place of comfort. Trinity Buoy Wharf doesn’t have this type of area in their site therefore a type of greenery is needed.

Being made of grass and next to a river it shows to me that this area tries to implement the nature with a modern design to create a vibrant/comforting place to visit.

The grass block are each aligned in a row one behind the other in multiple rows. This can look strange to people who visit therefore

Throughout the site there are multiple walkways which go above each of the many holes. This gives the visitors a sense of enjoyment as they are walking over the strange grass structures.

It reminds me of a maze with all the twists and turns it makes.

Outside seating area. This is a great area which I can use for my design. It uses a large platform which is floating-like over a lake. With no handlebars when walking through it gives people a sense of thrill as it could be dangerous, however the lake is shallow.

It can work well in Trinity Buoy Wharf and there is lots of open space which can be used. There is also a large river where we can get the water from The walkways are multipurpose as they can be used to travel across the lake and people can sit on them. It is mainly made from wood which gives it a modern look to it.

This is a multi-floor café that can be placed near the middle of the open space. It can be good for Trinity Buoy Wharf as it would fit well next to the container city. In terms of uniqueness, they are very similar. This may give a modern feeling to the site. This is a small grass hill that can be placed anywhere. The main purpose of this is for people to sit down and relax. Being grass, the structure can be used for all ages and can be the fun, relaxing area that Trinity Buoy Wharf needs. This is a kiosk. It uses sharp edges with a canopy roof. As Trinity Buoy Wharf is very open with little cover to the sun, the kiosk can be used for shelter and for people to buy refreshments.

Large seating area. This is a large seating/shade area which is shaped in a wavey way. Wood is used throughout with large stone blocks and metal rods to hold it all in place. This is perfect for the summer as there are seats and shade if you don’t like the sun. I will use this for inspiration on a seating area around the site near the river

The structure is very 'wave like' with its up and down curve motion. This can be interesting to people as in a modern environment this seating area can be eye catching and pulls people towards it. With Trinity Buoy Wharf being dull and boring, a structure like this can intrigue people.

Each 'wave' is very tall and wide which means it is suitable for all. The wood used is also very strong and sturdy which is also supported by metal poles which go all around the inside to connect with concrete blocks.

This can be placed in the space on the left of the lighthouse --> perfect for the view of the O2.

There are three main parts which make up this structure. They are placed around each other, and the further ones are larger. This means there will be many seats for people

Side view of where it will be located: By unjoining the circular structure, you get a long wavey spiral which flows like wave. This can work well in the site as there is a large river next to it.

Pavilion This is a large open spaced pavilion which can provide many potential purposes in the Trinity Buoy Wharf. This structure is made up with smooth stone painted white and large tiles holding the open roof up.

The pavilion in a general circular shape with platforms coming out on each side for entry. A design like this can be useful for Trinity Buoy Wharf as it can be transferred into a café/food stall. The structure is not too big or too small and can be entered so there is enough space A grass platform with a small tree in the middle which is surrounded by a small amount of water.

A few adjustments to the design can be made to suit the environment and purpose of the pavilion. The example below is a design for a park or grass space. It has an open ceiling for sun light and a large tree opposed to the small one before. The water in the center is also removed perfect for a sunny hot day.

Can be located in the corner of Trinity Buoy Wharf.

Many pillars are used to hold up and support the structure. This can also be done for design purposes to make it feel more open even though it’s a closed space.

Large site with a water stream through it: This is a very good reference area for Trinity Buoy Wharf as everything flows with each other to create a geometric design. This is a very large, brightly coloured area where it uses a lengthy water stream to contrast the circular design of the seating/relaxing areas.

Different layers can be used to make different platforms.

Large space in Trinity Buoy Wharf can be utilized for a public space.

The circular design to this location provides many opportunities for many designs like seating areas and pavilions or even just a general area. The use of shapes throughout the site can provide a pattern-like design which Trinity Buoy Wharf needs in order to stand out and attract people. The small circle platforms can be made into a large platform. This design uses many twist and turns to create an area which all flows together. This can work well with water.

Large circular seating area can be used throughout the site which makes a circular design.

The final design

Café:

Large seating area: Walkway.

Entrance.

Kiosk + relaxation area:

Souvenir store:

Outdoor gym.

Sketch up design plan view:

Entrance: When first walking in Trinity Buoy Wharf you will see three small souvenir stores and 3 large towers which represent a lighthouse/watch tower. These will be placed in a patch of grass and flowers and are protected by strong metal railings.

Each of the three stores will sell different items however will still be relevant to the site. For example, books which tell people amazing information about the site. The stores will also be compact making it space efficient.

Each tower will have glass around it giving it a seethrough look to it. It will be made from sturdy bricks and will be ingrained into the ground therefore no wind will be able to knock it, making it very safe for even the worst of weathers.

Railing are on around the pathway. This is to block people from getting close to the tall structures.

Lots of greenery like grass, trees and flowers surround the area. Gives it a positive view.

There are three different types of souvenir stores which people will see upon entering. This is good for business.

There are small towers which represents the lighthouse in Trinty Buoy Wharf.

Plan view:

Kiosk/pavilion, toilet, and relaxation area:

Large trees in the middle of a glass floor which has a small amount of water underneath (can be collected from the Thames).

Small grass hills for people to sit on or children to play on. Benches are around as well.

Will be located next to the lighthouse. Pavilion where people can buy drinks/food from. Tables and seats are around.

Men and women public toilet. Pathways --> made of strong wood.

Large thin water in the middle. Layered with this piece of glass on top for safety therefore people can walk on it.

Male and women public toilet with a large sign on top for easy viewing from a far.

Long wooden walkways are through the water.

Large patches of grass and trees surround the whole area. Gives the people a park feeling.

Kiosk made from wood and other materials. Multiple buying station on either side. 4 seating areas to drink/eat. Surrounded by the view of the Thames.

Seating area:

This is a long seating area which consist of a two curvy structures that are joined together on one end. There will be a wooden platforms on each side for seating.

Seats

The seating will be made from cypress wood as it is cost efficient and strong so it will last long. Cypress wood is also rot and insect resistant. The colour is light yellowish brown so it will provide a visual impact.

It will be located along the side of trinity buoy wharf facing the O2 and close to the lighthouse. There will be enough space to walk around and through the structure and will be able to seat at least 10 people at a time comfortably.

Two trees are on either side connected to the grass floor. There are also light posts all around for lighting during darker hours.

The seat is made from wood which is be connected to the ground. This gives it a feel of connection to the site. Side view of the seating area --> it is roughly 15 metres long and 5 metres wide.

There is a water area on one side. Mostly for aesthetic purposes.

Large wooden gate to separate the lighthouse with the structure.

The square/geometric design works in conjunction with the container city.

Large geometric café:

The building will be approximately 26metres long and 20metres wide. Inside the store contains many open seats accompanied by a quiet and private space.

There will be a slight curvature to one side of the building. This is done to broaden the shapes of the buildings in Trinity Buoy Wharf

The railings are done this way to contrast this new building and the container city with the curving railings. It adds a creative feel to the area. POV of walking on the sides of the building:

Materials that will be used will be primarily brick, glass and metal. The colours will be very bright to match with the container city.

The two sides of the building will be the same and will not be too wide or too narrow.

Left side of the café --> has a large café sign. Flooring is wooden with a thin strip of water on the right side for decoration:

Inside contains seating, bathroom, counter, staff area and a quiet zone.

Front door --> covered by a canopy and with a menu on the front:

Right side of the café --> upon entering you must go under a large panel . Flooring is wooden with a thin strip of water on the left side for decoration:

Large blocks located on the roof in a singular row.

Gym and pavilion:

There will be a medium sized gym located next to the river. This is open spaced and free to use by anyone and any age. This can be good for the public as it will encourage people to stay fit and healthy for the price of nothing which may incentivise people to visit Trinity Buoy Wharf again.

Pavilion:

Gym:

Large rocks for decoration.

The pathway can provide easy access to the gym and the kiosk structure to where the toilet and grass humps are located. Next to the pathway are a multi-layered circular grass and tree structure with small areas of water. Lots of different flowers can be seen here so it's very peaceful with its bright colours. The gym will be open for anyone to use for free and will contain many different type of machines. This is to promote being healthy and staying fit. The floor is made from a soft synthetic surface. The walkways are made from concrete and will have a long thin strip of grass on either side.

There will be a small pavilion with benches inside. This is located at the end of the pathway.

Tunnel walkway:

The walkway will be circular in design just like a real tunnel however it is open on every side and has a roof covering the path to protect people from potential rain.

From the side the tunnel is shaped like a zig-zag. This is because each of the circles are different sizes. Mainly done so add depth and height to the design.

Two benches on the outside for seating. This is just next to the lighthouse.

The smallest circle in the tunnel is around 1 and half of an averaged height person.

The walkway is located on the left of the lighthouse and on the right of the gym.

This structure is made from wood and is the 'tunnel' that people must walk through to get to the wavy seating area. There is a long roof which covers majority of the path. This can protect people from the rain.

Open space is on either end of the tunnel. Seats are also placed outside.
