When you need a break

These past few months have been an exhausting, emotionally draining time for many of us. Whether we’re working longer hours, worried because we’re not working, uncertain about the future, staying indoors with fractious children or a partner, concerned about elderly relatives, no-one’s had it easy. The amount of tolerance and forbearance required, the mental agility to cope with new, unfamiliar ways, compounded with the challenge of emotionally supporting people devastated at the situation they find themselves in during this unprecedented pandemic has taken its toll on everyone involved.


Coping in the midst of tragedy whilst trying to remain positive, upbeat and maybe professional has been a massive ask of everyone. There are times when you need to take a break. Not a holiday, or a night out with pals, but a simple time out, recharging break.

- Stay hydrated. Feeling tired and irritable may be because you’re drinking too much coffee or too little water and have become dehydrated. Drink more water and clear the toxins from your body; your fluid levels will soon readjust.

Sometimes, after a busy, stressful day it’s tempting to flop into an armchair with a drink and the remote control. This might be fine occasionally, but done long-term it’s counter-productive and can result in you feeling lethargic and flat.

- Dedicate some time to music, maybe revisiting those old favourites you’ve not heard for a while. Or play some quiet, relaxing music to chill out.

- Take your lunch somewhere ‘nice’, maybe in a nearby beauty spot, rather than quickly eating it on the run, at your desk or in the car. Is there a local park, nature trail, garden or beach where you could enjoy a thirty-minute break? Make something tasty and nutritious and savour every bite. And know that everyone around you benefits from your having had some time to step back. - Go for a walk, run or bike ride and allow yourself personal space each day. Some people like to combine that with listening to music, podcasts or making calls, but why not use this valuable opportunity to clear your thoughts and engage fully in your activity. Notice the colours, sounds and changes each day; focus on the here and now.

- Book a zoom call with friends and have a party night, dancing, being energetic, reconnecting & having fun. - Make a brew and phone a friend for a leisurely chat. Settle down and exchange updates, laughs and mutual support. - Make time early evening to escape by reading a good book. Perhaps read whilst your evening meal is cooking. - Be creative. Many people have been baking bread and cakes with enthusiasm over lockdown, stirring and kneading, creating wonderful smells in their homes. Even if your efforts are inedible it can still be a therapeutic way to pass the time! - Get out the crafts, your painting or handiwork and enjoy being absorbed for a while. Or spend a little time in your garden, tending your plants, maybe growing herbs or vegetables.


- Do something you’re good at, that you’ve maybe forgotten about; DIY, a musical instrument, something that gives pleasure for its own sake. Feel proud at revisiting a positive achievement. - Enjoy family downtime together. If your children are mostly at home not every moment has to be spent in formal education. Get outside and go for walks, a nature trail, bird-watching, kick a ball about. Or if indoors, play board games, crafts, invent games.

- Take a break with your partner. Lockdown may have unearthed some irritations in your relationship due to spending more time together, each nursing individual worries and concerns. Do things separately but also have regular fun together; walking, talking, cooking, playing. Invest in some positive us time.


- Ask your partner for a massage. No talking, just a wonderful way to ease your muscles and let go of tensions in your body. Maybe alternate turns, but really enjoy the benefits of having your body soothed and massaged. - Ensure your bedroom is a cosy haven, a place where you retreat and relax. Clean sheets are always a bonus. And if you’re going through an especially busy, tough time it’s good to commit to going to bed a little earlier to wind down. - Immerse yourself in the sensory indulgence of a bath. Candles, bubbles, your favourite music and a thirty-minute soak could be a great way to relax and feel thoroughly cleansed and chilled after a long stressful day. Warm the towels and go for the full spa experience. - Take a mental break and practise daily gratitude. Appreciating what you have can raise your spirits, improve your mood and give you a break from tense situations. - Meditate and clear your mind. Some great free meditations are available online. Even if you simply use them for relaxation it’s a lovely daily break.

Wanting a holiday?

International travel was brought to a standstill in March following the global outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19). Months on, the future of travel is beginning to brighten. Countries with low infection and high recovery rates are preparing to open their borders to foreign travellers over the coming weeks. So, if you’re itching for a holiday, these are the countries to look to! Know before you go Before you jump at the chance for a summer by the Spanish sea, keep in mind that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is still advising against all but essential travel. While it’s unlikely that any newly written travel insurance policies will cover coronavirus-related claims, travelling against FCO advice will certainly invalidate the policies that do. In addition, the UK government has introducing mandatory 14-day self-isolation period for anyone (barring certain essential workers) entering the UK. Once the rules are in place, you may be fined up to £1,000 for noncompliance. These quarantine measures will be reviewed on June 29. Italy is open to travellers again, having lifted its quarantine restrictions for visitors from the EU and UK on Wednesday, June 3. The country is still emerging from one of the world’s toughest lockdowns, but many of Italy’s main attractions, including museums and gardens, opened back on May 18. Other cultural venues and outdoor spaces followed on June 15. Portugal has flung open its doors to international travellers once more, with foreign minister Augusto Santos Silva stating that visitors to the mainland will not have to quarantine on arrival and that only ‘minimal’ health measures are in place. This includes a temperature check on arrival. Portugal’s lockdown restrictions have also loosened, allowing restaurants and cafes, shopping malls and cultural venues to open with capacity caps. Beaches opened on June 6. The country is also in talks with the UK to create a so-called ‘air corridor’, meaning travellers to Portugal will not have to quarantine on return to the UK. Portugal hopes to have the agreement in place by the end of June. Turkey lifted international travel restrictions on June 12, and direct, scheduled flights between Turkey and the UK have resumed. Like many other top destinations, Turkey is implementing health and social distancing measures to help slow the spread of Covid-19. A mask is mandatory in all airports and at all times during a flight. Passengers must also complete a locator form before arriving in Turkey and will be subject to a health screening on arrival. Beaches will be marked with dedicated sunbathing zones and smoking will be banned to reduce contamination from discarded butts.

Vegan News

Plant Based News have confirmed that pizza giant Domino's are trialing two new vegan-friendly pies in the U.K. and Republic of Ireland. The options - which include a Vegan Margherita and Vegan Vegi Supreme - will be available from 46* stores nationwide, via the brand's website and delivery app. Vegan pizza at Domino's The Margherita features tomato sauce and vegan cheese made by Domino's, and the Vegi Supreme adds mushrooms, sweetcorn, onions, green & red peppers, and tomatoes. In addition, diners can customize their pies with any other vegan-friendly ingredients. The pizzas come in a medium size and will be served with a side of Domino’s BBQ dip (vegan). They are priced the same as non-vegan equivalents. 'A while coming' According to Domino's, it has taken some time to develop a plant-based dough. A previous trial was deemed not up to scratch, says the company, and so a further year of trial and error was required.

Tesco doubles vegan food range In the last year, sales of chilled vegan foods at Tesco have soared by a massive 25 per cent, helping to swell the UK meat free market to £310 million. To meet the soaring demand, the supermarket has just announced that it is more than doubling its own brand plant-based food range. Dubbed Wicked Kitchen , the vegan range was only launched earlier this year, created by Tesco’s pioneering chef and head of plant-based innovation Derek Sarno, whose mission is to convert meat eaters to vegan food. While two new products officially hit stores mid June, the rest of the 26 strong new range will be following gradually over the coming weeks. Rather than salads and juices, the new items are seemingly a lot more winter food focused, including crafted pies, ‘sausage’ rolls, sourdough pizzas and deli foods, as well as chilled desserts.

Sportswear giant Adidas has launched a new line of vegan sneakers dubbed 'Our Icons Go Vegan'. One of the world’s largest sporting brands Adidas has revamped three of its most iconic sneakers to make them vegan-friendly as part of its new ‘Our Icons Go Vegan’ line. The Superstar, Samba and the Continental 80 are all made of a recycled polyester material coated in PU rather than with animal materials such as leather.The Continental 80 design also features an EVA foam derived from algae which help to clean an estimated 30 litres of polluted lake water and is available in three colours.

Of course my wife knows I love her, my husband knows I think the world of him, my kids know I’m so proud of them. I don’t have to keep telling them, we’re not like that! We forget those things that bring a smile to our faces. When you’re being polite and saying please and thank you, expressing how much you enjoyed your evening meal or what a help it was when you discovered that your car had been filled with petrol, you’re showing little ways to be gracious and demonstrate that you take nothing for granted. By acknowledging a kindness it can make all the difference and result in the other person feeling appreciated and special.


By investing in two-way exchanges you ensure that your relationship is about more than just co-existing and speaking only when you need to add items to the shopping list, or deliver updates on what the children are up to. Do you sometimes feel insulted or aggrieved when something goes wrong or inappropriate, unhelpful decisions are made on your behalf? The point is that if you choose to not regularly communicate, include yourself in family discussions and say how you feel you’re effectively removing yourself from the decision-making process and expecting others to be psychic about your likes, dislikes and wishes. Choices and decisions have to be made and if you don’t participate you may end up having to go along with things by default, which is not always a bad thing, but which can eventually result in all involved feeling frustrated and taken for granted. Good relationships can make a real difference to your stress levels and quality of life, especially in tough times. When you expect others to be psychic you’re selling both yourself and others short. We all have our own bad habits. Some can be harmful to our health such as smoking and drinking too much coffee. Some can be financially bad for us such as gambling or being a spend-aholic. Some can bad for our appearance such as hair picking and biting nails. Some may affect our social lives such as swearing too much or staying doors too often playing video games. Bad habits are usually things that cause us personal joy but aren’t good for us in the long run. They can often be hard to break but we rely on them so often for pleasure that we’re addicted to them. They may even be second nature, resulting in us doing them subconsciously. Breaking a bad habit takes a lot of mental strength. No matter how harmful or innocent your bad habit may be, these five tips can help you to stop. Replace your bad habit with a good habit Breaking a bad habit can leave a sense of emptiness, because you no longer have that thing that once provided comfort. Dealing with this emptiness can be difficult. Often the best way to fill this emptiness is to take up a new healthy habit in its place. This could include chewing gum instead of binge eating, using an e-cigarette instead of smoking or using funny exclamations instead of swearing or trying to beat your score on the rowing machine at the gym rather than beating your score on a video game. You may have to try a few replacements habits before you find one that sticks. Steer clear of triggers and temptations Certain environments, people and activities may spur you to want to fall back into your old ways. Whilst you can’t remove all of these, there may be some that you can switch out. If you’re trying to quit drinking, you could consider meeting with friends for coffee rather than at the pub. If you’re trying to limit Facebook time in the evenings, you could consider placing your phone in another room or even disabling wi-fi for periods of the day. You should also steer clear of people that try to de-motivate you.


Join forces with other people Finding other people who share your habit and making a joint effort to quit could help to spur you on by offering camaraderie. This is the reason weight loss groups like Slimming World are so popular. Even if you don’t have a club near you for your bad habit, you may be able to join an online group or forum to get moral support (unless of course your aim is to use the internet less!). Seek professional help Sometimes a bad habit may be so serious or so addictive that professional help is required. Alternatively, you may want to see a counsellor or a hypnotist to try and help you break your bad habit. Stay positive Last but not least, you need to stay positive and adopt an ‘I will do this’ mindset. These past few weeks and months have provided many of us with the unexpected opportunity to spend more time in the great outdoors. Unable to work, obliged to refrain from going outside unless for essential reasons like shopping or exercise many of us have turned to walking, running and riding our bikes as the motivating factor in leaving our homes. Shopping online has become a way of life for many, using home delivery for food, clothes and all manner of goods. Services have been increasingly sourced online too with exercise classes, zoom meetings and networking being introduced to many homes. Many children have been home-educated and parents have desperately sought a variety of ways to entertain, amuse and tire their children. Baking has found an unprecedented level of popularity. So, what with being hunched up over a computer or feeling cooped up indoors it has prompted many people to feel a little stir-crazy and seek some joy by spending time in nature. Spending time in nature is important for many reasons. We’ve been fortunate with some wonderful weather, a blessing which has provided space and time away from the four walls of our homes. Many families have never spent so much time together other than during Christmas or holidays, which is fine when you know how long it’s going to last, you’re still in employment and life is good. It’s important to remember that time outdoors in nature delivers many health benefits. We’re able to top up our vitamin D levels, breathe deeply of clean fresh air, maybe walk strenuously as well as increase our fitness and oxygen levels.
