Managing well with Less

During these past few months many of us have had to manage on less income, some on substantially less. Yet whilst we may have been earning less we may have also found that we're spending less due to reduced opportunities to get out and spend. Yes, for many, overheads have increased; some will have lost their jobs, been furloughed from work or have had no orders or requests for work coming through, so have been restricted to spending more time at home. They may have set up a home office or supported children being home-schooled. Some will have saved on travel, clothing, going out and haircuts, but have had to pay for more food, fuel and home entertainment. Interestingly 9/10 people who have worked from home have stated a preference for continuing to do so. It's become a comfortable, safe way to live. So, how has it been for you; are you managing well on less or are you anticipating vulnerable times ahead? Shopping online has become the norm for many people, and home delivery companies have thrived. But equally, since the beginning of lockdown many of us have discovered how much less is needed for us to live satisfactorily. Our homes may have been thoroughly cleaned and improved and that investment enables us to feel comfortably settled there. We've nested with lovely colours, textures, improved decor and maybe even some homemade masterpieces from the children. Let's look at ways to continue managing well on less: Lots of people have lost their jobs or face uncertain futures post-furlough. The result is perhaps working part-time, fewer hours or moving from staff to contract work. Managing on less has become a stark reality.

- Many people have found ways to cut back and economise and have been amazed to discover how their priorities have changed. Concerns at leaving the house or arranging online food orders have meant they've become more imaginative about using what's in stock, have learned to cook, make ingredients go further, share surpluses with neighbours or have grown produce themselves. Batch-cooking, freezing and exchanging with other households has made a lot of economic sense. - Those who shop online have found that by using a list or repeating their regular order they've reduced the temptation to make impulse purchases. But equally when visiting stores in person many people don't want to browse, instead knowing exactly what they want, quickly sourcing those items and leaving. - And shopping for clothes or shoes in person has largely lost its appeal due to queuing, one-way systems, no trying on or being offered only one shoe each time. It's become a strange and unfriendly way to shop, a great inducement to spend less! Moving forward, as restrictions start to relax might there be positive lessons to carry forward. - Working from home and conducting meetings or networking online has resulted in dressing down, so the requirement for business clothes has lessened. After the initial outlay for kit, tech, training and setup there's probably an allowance needed for extra heating, electricity, online capacity and incidentals, but less spent on travelling and office space. - As many items of clothing may now be deemed unnecessary, why not organise ways to exchange your unwanted, nearly new clothes with friends? Maybe organise a social and perhaps even charge a small fee for charity, allowing people to meet and recycle their clothes, shoes & accessories. - When you've less income it's good to reflect on other ways to live well. You may already unofficially use skill exchanges, doing book-keeping in return for handyman repairs, or cooking or baking in exchange for gardening, decorating, childcare tuition or other support. Be resourceful and find ways to trade without needing money to change hands.

- Socialising has been much reduced, with many relationships being maintained online. Having less income means that we need to rethink how to move forward. Safari suppers are a fun way to inexpensively connect in person over dinner parties, with one course held at each house, sharing the expense whilst moving from home to home. For variety you could introduce a theme, like fancy dress, murder mystery or elegant chic.

- Maintaining contact with one's family and social group is important and finding imaginative ways to do that is not always easy. Online book clubs, quiz nights, music events, dance parties have come into their own. In person, walks, treasure hunts, games evenings, picnics, amateur dramatics can all play their part.

Moving forward, pamper evenings could replace more expensive salon visits, where a few friends share products and exchange treatments over snacks. Card evenings, board games, discussion groups can also be inexpensive, fun ways to socialise, especially as the autumn and winter evenings arrive. Get the children involved with their own chores and responsibilities, where they earn credits perhaps towards a reward. Encourage them to come off their devices with crafts, outdoor games and maybe let them plan an event, like a picnic or day out.

Some practical ways to manage on less include learning to cook, being more vigilant about switching off lights, being sure to use what you have in stock, checking your bank statements to ensure that your direct debits are correct and you're not paying for out of date memberships or insurances. If you're travelling to work might a car share be viable? And if you're really struggling look into joining a Credit Union, an initiative set up to help with advice on managing your money.

How do you feel about Christmas..? Are you looking forward to Christmas this year? It seems that for many of us the thought of something bright and festive to look forward to offers a beacon of hope and optimism. No-one has been untouched by the global pandemic and many have been affected by serious health, loss or financial considerations. So, the thought of comfortable familiar touches and a home that's bright and Christmassy provides a definite feel-good factor.

Yes, there are people who have thrived, even seen their businesses boom, but the downbeat mood across the world has cast major shadows. We've had time to reflect on what's really important in our lives and for many we're realised that it's the relationships with those closest to us that are the most important thing in their lives.

Nine out of ten people who've worked what truly matter. So this Christmas, from home have said they want to even if we're 'just' exchanging continue doing so. Putting less emphasis homemade cards and inexpensive on power-dressing, status and gifts, or maybe because of that, the impressive spending and instead being true spirit of Christmas will be especially at home, dressing more casually and evident. And, what's lovelier than mostly working their own hours to suit receiving a card that's been made with have become more important for you in mind. Or a jar of preserves, a many. After so much time spent in homemade cake, a knitted scarf. All lockdown, being constrained these things that have been made, and restricted for much of the year, the given and received with selflessness thought of and love. celebrating Thoughtful gestures make all the true family difference too. When someone gives values at you a Christmas present that will really Christmas offers benefit you, perhaps a voucher for something to look babysitting, an offer to cook dinner, to forward to, a time help in the garden or with decorating, to spend with loved tuition in a foreign language or in ones, to appreciate playing the guitar you know that it's our home, family and been given with some thought. Far friends, even if it's via more relevant to you than an expensive online communication. fragrance picked up in a department These months in lockdown have store. demonstrated that money and Gifts for our partner may also be extra expensive gifts aren't love, even though thoughtful this year. When a loved one it may have felt like it in previous years gives us a compilation of 'our' special when there was a spending frenzy to music, a scrapbook of our time buy the latest toys, devices and all the together told through tickets, souvenirs items the children said they wanted. and mementoes or a special photo Those times when we spent money we gallery then we can feel especially could ill afford to compensate for loved and cared for. working long hours, being a single parent or trying to invest everything into making that time special. Some families became so indebted that they needed up to three years to pay it back. Lockdown has reinforced many family bonds and values, shown us that home, relationships and time in nature are

After the year we've had many of us have come to realise what's really important. We've recognised how much of what we've previously strived for is no longer as important to us as it once was. We don't need all the trappings and may not care to spend money on things that are now seen as wasteful or which require excessive expense. Especially when previous Christmases have seen many families overspend so much that it's caused them serious anxiety and hardship. So, Christmas this year can be a time to celebrate our homes, families and friends and make for a festive, comfortable and welcoming holiday. We can take some inspiration from US Thanksgiving, a time when more families travel home to celebrate together over a family meal and yet no gifts are exchanged.

I may be wrong, but this year I'm guessing that many of us will be keen to display our Christmas decorations and trees with gusto! Let's celebrate the true meaning of Christmas! October Horoscopes from Russell Grant

Full Moon on the 1st New Moon on the 16th

ARIES The Full Moon on the 1st could prompt you to lash out at someone who cuts corners and treats others badly. You’re tired of being taken for granted. After making your feelings known, you’ll be given a chance to take on a very different role starting on the 2nd; make it your mission to render perfect performances. Challenging a time-honoured institution on the 9th will backfire; pour your rebellious energy into a creative project instead. Pushy behaviour on the 13th will get an angry reception; give your business or romantic partner some space. Work demands will be powerful on the 15th; prepare to cancel some personal plans to finish an important assignment. On the 16th, the New Moon warns against signing a contract that gives too much power to the other side. As the month nears its end your love life starts to gather an exciting momentum all of its own while another Full Moon on the 31st brings an unexpected boost to your bank balance and a little extra to splash out on life’s little luxuries.

TAURUS The Full Moon at the start of October brings an embarrassing secret to light; it’s time to make amends with someone you hurt a long time ago. You’ll attract admirers like bees to honey on the 2nd making this a great time to embark on a relationship with someone who shares your love of art, culture and music. If you already have a partner time spent in romantic seclusion will be time well spent. The New Moon on the 16th warns against taxing your system with too much junk food and alcohol. By feeding your body pure ingredients, you’ll avoid burnout. Turn a deaf ear to friends who criticise your plans to launch a creative venture on the 18th. Your instincts are right on target, helping you to make something that is both useful and beautiful. A second Full Moon on the 31st prompts you to listen to a wild impulse and transform your look in some way. You’ll be delighted with the results.

GEMINI The Full Moon on the 1st prompts you to break away from an annoying organisation or group. Don’t feel pressured to pay dues or fees that would be better spent on personal purchases. Stop telling yourself you’re incapable of performing a demanding job on the 7th; nothing could be further from the truth. The chance to work for a former employer could come your way on or around the 14th, but on the 16th, the New Moon warns against getting involved in a troubled romance. Although someone you fancy is right up your street looks-wise they’re not mentally stable enough for a relationship. Returning to a hobby you enjoyed as a child will make you feel years younger on the 28th. Indulge your playful side. Another Full Moon on the 31st brings an unexpected opportunity to rest, relax and recharge your batteries. Plan to do something, go somewhere or just quietly meditate and reconnect with your inner self.

CANCER As October gets up and running the Full Moon brings a stressful professional situation that might be too much to bear. Instead of battling with a jealous rival, strike out on your own. An influential business or romantic partner will help you through an important transformation on the 4th. Use their help to start a fresh chapter. A pushy employer will pressure you to cancel personal plans on the 15th; you may have no other choice. The New Moon on the 16th forces you to find another living situation; don’t allow a manipulative person to interfere with this move. It’s better to assert your independence. Signing a business deal on the 21st is strongly advised. This contract will pave the way to long-term financial stability. A second Full Moon on the 31st finds you finishing a group project. Don’t be surprised when you’re named the most valuable player. The entire team feels indebted to you for your creative contributions.

LEO October starts off with a Full Moon on the 1st that brings an upsetting legal or official decision. It may be necessary to change jobs because of this news. A friend who promised to find you a job will go back on their promise on the 11th; but it’s all for the best. Don’t let your ego get in the way of learning valuable skills on the 13th. On the 16th, the New Moon will tempt you to throw yourself into a nasty argument on social media. Instead of firing off a sarcastic remark, stay off the Internet for a full day. You don’t want to say anything you will come to regret in the days ahead. Your moneymaking ability will soar starting on the 22nd; this is a great time to find a lucrative job. Another Full Moon on the 31st marks a thrilling turning point in your career. Be ready to accept a position with a highly creative company. You’ll find this work both stimulating and fulfilling.

VIRGO The Full Moon at the start of the month will bring an unexpected expense; it may be necessary to cancel a plan or project to cover this bill. Resist the temptation to contradict an expert on the 7th; you don’t want to alienate someone you might have to rely on in times to come Your powerful allure will cause someone to fall head over heels in love with you on the 10th while the New Moon on the 16th brings an intriguing moneymaking opportunity. Ultimately, you will turn down this job offer, since it will conflict with your creative life. Be ready to turn down an unrealistic request from your business or romantic partner on the 18th. More money for luxuries becomes available on the 19th; so give yourself a treat or two as the end of October draws near. A second Full Moon on the 31st could bring news of an interesting new opening that will give you a chance to share your knowledge and know-how with others and get paid for it.

LIBRA The Full Moon on the 1st forces you to come to terms with a troubled relationship. You should break away from someone who has been stealing your joy. On the 16th, the New Moon tempts you to radically change your appearance. Resist this impulse, as you probably won’t be happy with the results. Be realistic about your work responsibilities on the 18th; don’t force colleagues to pick up your slack. The 19th is ideal for raising your rates or negotiating a pay rise. Alternatively, you will be offered a lucrative job involving the arts. Money from an inheritance, legal settlement or insurance refund will arrive on the 21st, allowing you to treat yourself to a few of life’s little luxuries that have previously been out of your reach. Your star power will be evident to everyone on the 28th; use it to win favours and influence people. Another Full Moon on the 31st marks a thrilling romantic encounter. Let an ardent admirer sweep you off your feet.

It will be much easier to exert your influence on the 4th, when people will welcome your powerful insights. Try to avoid arguing with a quarrelsome colleague on the 9th; you’re going to need their help sooner than you think. The New Moon on the 16th could force you to adopt a low profile. Beware of overshadowing a powerful egotist. Your powers of persuasion will be strong on the 19th; use them to get funding for a new creative project. Official paperwork will be delayed starting on the 28th; you might have to wait until next month to get approval or a certificate. A second Full Moon on the 31st marks an exciting turning point in an intimate relationship. A sudden engagement, marriage or divorce will open a door that was once firmly shut to you.

SAGITTARIUS The Full Moon on the 1st urges you to make a decision about your love life. If you’re single, you must decide whether to make a serious commitment to a love interest. If you already have a partner go the extra mile to add spice to your life together. Money for household items will arrive on the 12th; this is a great time to buy furniture and artwork. On the 16th, the New Moon tempts you to join a social set; be wary about associating with snobs and power players. Don’t let a childish temper tantrum keep you from pursuing a moneymaking opportunity on the 19th; this job will bring you much pleasure. If you feel you’ve outgrown a childhood ambition why not start working on a new set of aims and aspirations as October gives way to November. Another Full Moon on the 31st brings wonderful news about a medical matter. You’ll be able to resume a rigorous routine after getting a clean bill of health.

CAPRICORN On the 1st, the Full Moon brings an abrupt end to a stressful living situation; take this opportunity to strike out on your own. The full force of your charisma comes roaring back on the 4th; and you can use it to lure people into your web of intrigue. An argumentative relative will start to get on your nerves around the 9th; so you’d be wise to put some distance between you and them for as long as you can. The New Moon on the 16th brings an intriguing career opportunity, but it might involve too much personal responsibility. Your generous spirit attracts an exciting travel opportunity on the 19th; making this a good time to finally make a booking. You’ll get a chance to share your expert knowledge with some appreciative people on the 24th; this task will feel more like play than work and as a result your employer will change their mind about an on the 28th, causing you to consider a career move. A second Full Moon on the 31st is perfect for an impromptu vacation or impetuous romantic encounter.

AQUARIUS The Full Moon brings upsetting news about a community situation at the start of October; there is still time to appeal to public officials; then your employer won’t try to accommodate any special requirements you might have on the 7th; it may be time to look for a better job. Money from an inheritance, legal settlement or insurance refund will inspire you to buy a beautiful luxury item. Don’t hesitate to indulge your sensual side. A bad rule at work will be reversed on the 14th, bringing relief to everyone affected. On the 16th, the New Moon makes you yearn to expand your horizons, but official duties will keep you rooted to the spot. Empty promises from a work official on the 20th will increase your determination to find a better job. Another Full Moon on the 31st marks an exciting turning point in your home life. You might relocate to an unusual area that stimulates your imagination.

PISCES On the 1st, the Full Moon brings an unexpectedly small paycheque; you may have been charged excessive membership fees. Joining a professional organisation will put you in the spotlight on the 12th; don’t be bashful and be ready to put your skills and talents on display. The New Moon on the 16th warns against opening a credit account; it’s best to keep debts to a minimum. Take a realistic view of a loved one’s strengths and weaknesses on the 18th; putting anyone on a pedestal is a recipe for disaster. Friendship could turn to romance on the 21st. If you’re single, obey an impulse to push a close relationship to the next level. Do you have a partner? Sweep them off their feet and take them on the holiday of a lifetime. Check bank statements with a fine-toothed comb starting on the 28th, when errors can easily occur. A second Full Moon on the 31st is perfect for launching a blog, podcast or website; prepare to become an overnight sensation.

Dave asks “I am very lucky and have a wonderful family and a successful career, but I constantly feel as though I haven’t achieved enough or that I should be doing more. Could the stars help me change my mindset?” Dave has the Sun, Mercury and Venus in ambitious Aries. Arian’s are in it to win it and he has built a successful career. With Mars in Cancer, he will have put energy and passion into building a beautiful home for his wonderful family. Dave also has Saturn retrograde in luxury-loving Leo. Saturn can be restrictive in this position, making Dave feel as if his efforts are never good enough. His Aries side keeps prompting him to set increasingly ambitious goals but he never feels satisfied. When Dave feels this way he should look back on his life to remind himself how much he has actually achieved. He should also start distinguishing desire from need. Next time he feels he should be doing more, he should ask himself if he is really in need or just experiencing desire.

Stacey asks “Since having our two beautiful children, I feel as though I’m drifting apart from my husband (an Aquarius) and we never spend any time together. How can I change this? As a Leo with Venus in Cancer, Stacey’s emotional security is focused on family. Caring for her home and beautiful children will bring her spiritual fulfilment. Her Aquarius husband does not fear commitment but he does need to keep a balance between family life and outside interests. He treasures his independence while at the same time adores his kids and enjoys family life. If Stacey feels as if she and her husband are drifting apart, she might take more interest in the hobbies and activities they could both share while encouraging him to pursue independent interests. If she feels lonely she should admit it, so they can both look for points of compromise.

Every Day Money Saving Tips

The cost of living is going through the roof these days. Being able to find ways to save a few pennies here and there is becoming so important. Especially for those who live paycheck to paycheck! Or, like me, you just want to be a bit better with money. In this article we share with you our everyday money saving tips.

Direct Debits We all have things set up on direct debit these days but it’s so easy to forget what we have coming out and if we even still use whatever it is the payment is covering. It’s worth while going through your direct debits every few months to see whats going out of your bank and stopping anything you no longer need. For example, i recently realised both myself and my husband were paying for Amazon Prime services. The packages were coming to the same place yet we were paying for it twice! That saved us £7.99 a month immediately, (£95.88 a year)

Snacks Going on day trips to fun and exciting places can be a great way of spending the day with friends/family. Visiting parks, or places owned by the National Trust are great ways of having a day out that don’t cost that much. However, make sure you take into consideration things such as meals out. These are generally much more costly expenses, yet can be avoided if you plan ahead. For example, you might go to the cinema and think it’s going to cost you £10 per ticket. What you don’t take into consideration is the snacks that go with it. You might each buy a drink and some popcorn or nachos, and maybe some pic n mix if you’re feeling it. Popcorn at cinemas is known to have THE HIGHEST mark up of all foods! A bag of popcorn at the cinema might cost you £3, and the large drink another £3. Whereas if you plan ahead, you can get a drink and popcorn from a supermarket, combined, for less than £3 total! Just think how much that would save you if you go a few times a month. Or, take your own drink of bottled water with you and a few homemade snacks so it’ll cost you even less. These days cinemas don’t seem to mind you taking your own food and drink (within reason). I wouldn’t advise you take a full on picnic, but a few snacks would be fine.

Grow Your Own Whether you have a huge garden, an allotment patch or you live in a single bed flat, you can still grow your own fruit and veggies. All you really need is a place that gets good sunlight and some good quality soil to grow them in. Oh, and don’t forget to water them on the odd occasion too!

You also don’t have to buy seeds for everything either. Things like sweet peppers are filled with seeds inside them. All you need to do is take the seeds out, dry them out on a window sill for a few days and plant them up. Free seeds!

Beauty Treatments I know a lot of people like to take a trip to the nail or hair salon, maybe one or twice a month. However, why not try going every other month instead and for the month in-between, do an at home treatment. You could make a proper pamper night out of it. Have a lovely hot bath with your favourite bubbles, a few candles and do your nails yourself. Savings Accounts Set yourself up a free savings account with your current bank. Then set up a direct debit from your main account to your new savings account so each month, without you having to think about it, you’re putting money in to your savings. Budget Each month, give yourself an allowance. Maybe take out £100 a month to give yourself to spend on things like food, clothes…the non-essentials. If you are only spending the money you can see, you know exactly what you’re spending and what you have left each month. Selling Use online platforms such as Facebook selling pages in your local area or even eBay to sell your old, unwanted items. You probably won’t make that much but every penny helps. Anything you do make could go right in to your savings account to help top it up. Recycle – Upcycle I never really did any upcycling but once i realised how much money you can save by doing so, we now do it daily! Something as simple as keeping your old squeezy bottles can save you more than you think! If you have a look in your supermarket what the price difference is between buying something in a squeezy bottle and in a glass jar, you’ll be shocked. The squeezy bottles as always more expensive and have less product in. Yet they do that because they know we all prefer the convenience of a squeezy bottle. However, if you save your old bottle, buy it in a glass jar, then simply transfer the contents into the bottle. Saved yourself money AND you can use the glass jar as a container for something else. 'It's not the men in your life that counts. It's the life in your men." When actress Mae West made that comment it was meant to be a saucy innuendo, designed to raise a laugh. Today I'm turning that somewhat risque remark on its head and asking 'how are the men in your life?' Men's mental health has become an area of increasing concern, with 3/4 deaths among men under 50 in the UK being registered as suicides (4903 in 2018) and male suicides in England and Wales at its highest for twenty years. 1/8 men are diagnosed with a common mental health problem, yet only 36% of referrals for psychological support are for men. Many men still regard it important to be the breadwinner, protector, provider and often measure success in terms of income, possessions and status. Even hobbies and interests can have a competitive edge to them, where being the fastest, fittest, strongest brings with it the admiration and respect of others in their group. Their early male role models may well have been strong, silent types, taught to 'be a man', not be 'a girl' and 'man up' in times of stress or difficulty. Far preferable to keep quiet rather than share any troubles or issues with family, partner or friends.

Even today the archetypical male is regularly portrayed as fit and athletic, lean and good-looking, motivated, successful, focused, coherent, driven. Yet we also want our men to be in touch with their feelings, able to communicate their emotional challenges and have a gentle side, things not every man feels able to do. Thus worrying times can result in feeling stressed, isolated and ill-equipped. Exposing doubts and fears may risk appearing vulnerable and not in control. But equally holding back may appear hostile, reluctant or distant. Ambition is seen as a positive trait in a man, promotion and progression often viewed as natural and desirable. But not everyone wants to be a high-achiever or pursue the next level of success. They may have various other interests and goals that inspire and motivate them too. Today many homes are turning family life on its head by re-evaluating their priorities and discovering a less acquisitive way of life. The family, home, nature and more simple living are what matters in their happy, fulfilling lives. We're all different and need to remember that what inspires one person may turn another to despair!

Let's look at ways to support the men in your life! Encourage regular conversations where you listen and resist the temptation to finish his sentences, second-guess or formulate your reply whilst he's speaking. By establishing easy, regular exchanges it becomes natural and comfortable to regularly talk about anything and everything, without leaving it to fester. Lead by example. Don't be afraid of admitting failure, uncertainty or of asking for help and ideas. By nurturing a team/family mentality it enables others to feel good about asking for input and support too, even when they've made a poor or unsuccessful decision. Sharing and asking for help becomes positive and inclusive rather than a sign of weakness. Be happy if he has other allies and confidantes. Don't be jealous of others in his core circle. They may have a better perspective on what's going on in specific areas of his life. Sure, you need to know if a situation's going to impact on your household, but accept that he doesn't need to share everything personal. He may find his 'people' in several areas of life. Friendships from school, college, university, travels, sporting interests, clubs, work and hobbies may each provide valuable contributions, opinions, support and perspectives on life. From travelling, amateur dramatics, flower arranging, politics, encourage him to be true to himself and find his interests. Accept that there are many versions of success. For some it's in the trappings; the house, car, status and bank balance. For others it's time in nature, family and having less work-related stress. Some manage to successfully navigate a fine line between the different areas of life, but oftentimes it's hard to truly find a balance. Is he experiencing self-imposed pressure to please others, to make the family proud of him? If he's struggling with not wanting to go into the family business, go to university, commit to a professional career or follow traditional relationship or lifestyle choices it can be daunting for a young man, especially when compounded by his own confusion and need for acceptance. Respect and support his wishes. Be ready to support him in finding an appropriate confidante; a mentor, therapist, religious leader, family doctor, teacher, someone who's in tune with him. Someone sensitive and trustworthy who's able to offer the most suitable support, without pushing too hard for 'big reveals'. Or online forums and charity phone lines may offer more anonymous options for sharing, advising or simply a listening ear.

Encourage him to make space and time for things he enjoys and is good at. He may feel that he's not able to make significant life changes, that he's committed to certain obligations for now. Frustration buildup can sometimes be managed through introducing positive outlets, where he feels capable and appreciated. Sport, volunteering, creative hobbies can sometimes fill the void and remind him of his skills, talents and abilities. And they're far healthier options than becoming desolate, lonely or taking refuge in alcohol. Men are under pressure from many areas of life, especially at this time. Uncertainty about future education, work or travel opportunities plus the pressure to achieve status, spending power or achieve peak fitness are all areas of potential stress. Providing support through being present, sensitive and aware are ways that the man in your life can feel accepted for who he is and gain in confidence.
