Lesley Manville

An Enigma “They seek her here, they seek her there, they seek her almost everywhere.” The fact is five foot two, eyes of blue, ex soprano Lesley Manville, is indeed a sought out, much awarded actress who unveils her true brilliance on stage and screen. Directors like Mike Leigh, and ex-husbands like Gary Oldman were probably mesmerized by her starry aura. Gary must have insisted she give Hollywood a try; not bad advice when one ends up costarring with Angelina Jolie in movies like “Maleficent” and Daniel Day Lewis in “Phantom Thread”, for which she was nominated for an Oscar.

This multifarious, Piscean thespian also told an interviewer from Anglophenia, “I do a varied palette of work and characters, and I’m incredibly grateful for that – that’s what keeps me going....I feel very equipped in my career---”. Pure Piscean Genius Let's face it, hers is pure genius; after all her Sun, Moon and Mercury are all in that highly sensitive water sign. She mixes and matches a character's faults and virtues, merging and flowing into their moods as she strips their souls bare . She literally morphs into the psychotic Claire Zachanassian in the stage version of “The Visit, “a wicked creature, and for precisely that reason must not be played wicked”.

Mercury in Pisces helps her to expand on a character's contradictions, she unWhen the Guardian asked her how it derstands things about them others felt being a middle-aged Hollywood could not. She is a true psychic as she star. She replied “Extraordinary… I’m glad it happened when it did...... I was merges with their puzzling souls, even if her delicate character does not stand working with Paul Thomas Anderson, I fools gladly. She told the Guardian was not in a fake glitzy world of Holly“There’s an inherent thing in my brain wood, the work was a segue from Mike that makes me work hard. I don’t take Leigh. It came left of field. I did not any job for granted. I learn my lines. I have to compromise to do it – or get know what I’m doing. I come in good Botoxed [laughs]. But I did go hopping spirit, good faith and with humour. I and skipping and giggling to the Oscars don’t ever want to slow up. I work with because… why wouldn’t you? people much younger than me who sometimes don’t turn up prepared and I A Multifarious Thespian

find that aggravating and inexcusable. And then in the next sentence, they’ll say: “I hope when I’m your age, I have your career,” and I feel like saying: “Well, buck up and get your act together!" Jupiter in Leo might account for her fiery spurts of impatience. She could even be a tad over bearing when stressed, she certainly knows her worth and is not shy of her success.

One Big Stage Could that "Go for it" Leonine aspect have encouraged her to say yes to Netflix's offer to play Princess Margaret in the “Crown”. “There was never any doubt that I would say yes. ...I thought.... Margaret! That’s fabulous because she was so avant-garde. So naughty, delightful and funny. What a wonderful woman to play.” For her existence is probably one big stage, but also a bit of a circus. A Leo combo gifts her with inherent strength, an infallible self confidence, enabling her to be a rock to a sister suffering from breast cancer. She is certainly unafraid of life's challenges. Venus in Taurus ensures she is committed to her art, responsible and hard working. In her hands, the wayward Royal sister will return, larger than life, to our screens. Credit: BBC

“I learn my lines. I know what I’m doing. I come in good spirit, good faith and with humour. I don’t ever want to slow up...”

She told the Guardian, even if she is 63 she would never think of herself as too old for any role. “I feel at the top of my form as an actor and a woman: free, liberated, energised. I want this “feeling to stay – I’d quite like to lock it – because I know I’m not what you’d call young.” She is a fabulous mum and wife, yet she still remains a sensitive, enigmatic Piscean whose audiences continues to “seek her here, and there”, consistently amazed at how she vanishes into her roles, never compromising, authentic, breaking the mould as she touches our souls.

Ever been judged?

I'm sure there have been times when you've been walking towards someone and you've felt their eyes quickly scanning you up and down. It's disconcerting, isn't it! Are they checking out your clothes, your dress sense, your size; what's going on? And if you thought you were walking into a pleasant relaxed environment, perhaps meeting a friend, it makes for an even more disappointing scenario. What's going on! Why are they doing this!

Superficial judgements and assessments happen all the time though. We've no doubt expressed a, 'whatever were they thinking!' on occasion when we've seen someone wearing an outrageous outfit or struggled to conceal an amused, 'did they think it was fancy dress!' at times! And yet don't we love to see someone who has their own distinctive style carrying it off with panache? Outrageous touches often make someone an unforgettable centre of attention. And we ourselves may even seek out that rare and unusual look at times, trawl markets and charity shops for a special, unique piece of jewellery or an accessory that gives our look an exciting flourish. We may want to be different, stylish, original and yet do we sometimes experience negativity from others when we try? Are they jealous, do they want to be The fashion guru, the one with the quirky touch in our social group? Certainly, giving someone who's trying to be different a withering look can bring them, especially if they're a little nervous, back into line and potentially shake their confidence in trying again. And what about us? Are there times when we feel intimidated as a consequence of second-guessing or judging someone else's status? Do we find ourselves feeling that someone who's better educated, prettier, slimmer, more senior or affluent is automatically a superior, more important person, someone to be in awe of? Or that someone who's perceived to be less attractive or of lower status is less entitled to respect or consideration? Sometimes bias can be an almost unconscious response, but it can affect how we behave, how comfortable and at ease we are in the company of others. Enquiring what someone does for a living is a fairly standard opening question when meeting them for the first time, yet the reply can prompt quick judgements to be made. Whether or not they work, have a part-time or full-time job and what that is can result in us being impressed or dismissive, all based on the short reply to that question. And yet so many factors influence someone's choice of employment, from their opportunities for an education through to support received in establishing a career. Then there are those who thrive on stress and challenges, whilst others prefer an easier life. Each role has its place in a thriving society. Who are we to judge someone's choice? Similarly, finding our voice can be a tough ask, especially if we're new to a group or have perhaps never spoken before and fear that other members will be judgemental as they appear to be super-confident. All it takes is a barely

suppressed giggle, snigger or faint 'are you serious?' To ensure that we return to our corner, tail between our legs, hardly daring to speak again. It's not uncommon though, for several minutes later for someone else to say exactly what we were trying to say, and then receive loud applause! Or those times when we've invested lots of effort into something important. It can be tough when people who are unaware of the background to our story dismiss our success as a fluke, trivial or say it happened because of someone else. If you feel compelled to explain, justify yourself or remonstrate, just pause and ask why should you allow yourself to be pressured like that?

Do you really owe these people an explanation, does their judgement make a difference to your life, do you, on reflection, actually care what they think so much? No, no, no! Breathe, let it go and smile to yourself about what you've done, the efforts you've made, the lessons you've learned along this journey. And smile too at what they've not been doing whilst you were working to improve yourself.

Judgemental people seem to feel that confidence comes from running others down, belittling their efforts and generally using the piles of defeated bodies as stepping-stones over which they intend to climb. They may come across as knowledgeable, strong, forceful characters, full of confidence, driven and motivated. But gradually others start to see through their shallow veneer, realising how unnecessary and unpleasant it is to share the same orbit as those who continually rubbish other people, even when it's simply by raising an eyebrow or delivering an incredulous sigh. There's no joy in being around people who are always on the lookout for negatives in others, who are quick to judge and who choose to form inflexible opinions, thus seeing faults and imperfections in any situation. Most of us don't mind and are even a little relieved if a keynote speaker appears human and occasionally stumbles over a few words, we're tolerant if a new member of staff makes a small mistake in a restaurant. We don't need to rant, complain or make loud demands.

“Rather than find fault and reasons to criticise, it makes for a far more pleasant and positive experience when we encourage, appreciate the good, celebrate each other's successes and offer ways to raise each other up. It's far more satisfying and less stressful to enjoy finding the positives rather than the negatives...

Staycation Idea’s

With the evolving travel restrictions that seem to be changing every week, rather than an overseas trip. Travel Supermarket have put together a comprehensive list of staycations in ol' Blighty. And why not, ey? Britain is blessed with some cracking coastline, world-class cities and spectacular rural regions. Plus, when the weather’s right (and it does happen occasionally!), it's hard to beat the UK as a holiday destination. Who needs the Med when you’ve got Cornwall on your doorstep? No, we’re not joking – if you think Cornwall (or Kernow as you might hear the locals call it) is just about pasties, then think again! England’s west extremity has the lot. Besides its many stunning beaches, Cornwall has a deep sense of heritage and a vibrant creative side to explore. For the latter, look no further than the incredible Eden Project or Tate St Ives. Hankering for some great food? Head to pretty Padstow, which boasts excellent restaurants including chef Rick Stein’s flagship fish venue. The surf’s up in Bude, Newquay and Perranporth, and, of course, no trip to Cornwall would be complete without a visit to iconic Land’s End.

The Lake District is famed for its high fells, mighty lakes and its infinite capacity to inspire – countless writers, from Wordsworth to Beatrix Potter, have fallen in love with the place. Sixteen main bodies of water make up the park’s lakes, while England's tallest mountain, Scafell Pike, the second peak in the Three Peaks Challenge endurance event, is also located here. The area is renowned for its stunning walking routes, natural history and its quaint lakeside communities such as Keswick and Bowness-on-Windermere. Where should I stay in the Lake District? As Britain’s most popular national park, there’s a wide range of accommodation available in the Lakes. Windermere and Bowness-on-Windermere are good options, while Buttermere is situated in-between the lake of the same name and Crummock Water. The town of Keswick is closest to Derwent Water. Glennridding and Watermillock are good shouts for Ullswater, while there are plenty of smaller villages in and around the Lakes, as well as campsites and caravan sites. Credit: TravelSuperMarket

Reknowned as one of the UK's beauty spots, North Wales has long been singled out as an area of stunning landscapes, from its rolling, rugged terrain to quaint chocolate box villages. It’s here you’ll find one of Britain’s best loved national parks in Snowdonia, the stunning island of Anglesey, typically Welsh coastal towns like Conwy, and family holiday classics like Llandudno and Colwyn Bay. Thrillseekers not content with conquering Snowdon’s summit will also find the largest zipline in Europe, artificial waves at Surf Snowdonia, and epic wakeboarding in Conwy.

Where should I stay in North Wales? Dolgellau is a good base if you’re intent on climbing Snowdon, while Beaumaris is the perfect spot from which to explore Anglesey. Llandudno has all the charms of a classic family holiday, while nearby Conwy is smaller but much more picturesque. If you’d prefer to stay somewhere with more going on, Bangor offers more by way of decent nightlife, while the royal town of Caernarfon offers history and tradition in abundance. This boundless area contains the Cairngorms, Britain’s largest national park; Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain; and Loch Ness, one of Britain’s most famous lakes. Phew – that’s a fair bit of epic scenery right there, and that’s not even the half of it. Vast and sparsely populated, it’s also known for its remarkable castles, traditional Scottish clan history and friendly, charming people. Love whisky and walking? Not only does the Scottish Highlands have some of the most breathtakingly beautiful scenery in all of the UK, but some of the world’s best malts are made here too. There’s nothing quite like cosying up by a log fire with a wee dram after a long, bracing walk. Where should I stay in the Scottish Highlands? To call the Highlands big would be a slight understatement. At 30,659 km², the area is roughly the same size as Belgium – let’s just say there’s plenty of places to stay. Really it just depends on what you’re after: for mountains, there’s Fort William, near Ben Nevis, or Aviermore in the Cairngorms; for lakes, there’s Drumnadrochit on Loch Ness; for cities, try Inverness; and then there’s the whole island of Skye to explore. Really want to connect with nature? Pitch your tent where you like – wild camping is legal on most unenclosed land in Scotland (as long as you stick to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code).

Quick to judge..?

'What do you do' is often an opening gambit when meeting a stranger. It's deemed to be a safe, fairly neutral way of starting a conversation and getting to know someone. But how influenced are we by someone's reply, how much difference does it make if they say they're a brain surgeon, nuclear scientist, cleaner or supermarket worker? How impressed are we by their answer? Interestingly many job titles have changed over recent years, presumably to deliver greater importance and gravitas to the roles: the use of ambiguous words like consultant, operative and adviser are now used liberally in job descriptions. Sometimes it's impossible to guess how powerful or senior the role is and some businesses prefer to keep it that way, wanting to maintain a more level playing field, with less apparent hierarchy. I know of at least one multi-millionaire businessman who refers to himself as a grocer! And then there are those less common, perhaps more unusual jobs. If someone says they're a taxidermist, funeral director or even a hypnotherapist it can cause others to pause and be unsure as to whether they're impressed or not! Discovering what someone does typically results in us digesting that information and forming an opinion. For example, if someone's says they're a stay-athome parent do we automatically reflect on their circumstances, presuming them to be wealthy, privileged or lazy? Or if someone starts a cleaning job do we speculate that they must be desperately trying to make ends meet, a comment I read on social media, prompting the writing of this article.

But each job, each role is a contribution to the overall running of a business, home or group. Different tiers in any organisation bring different levels of investment in its setup and smooth operation, with specific tasks designed to keep things moving. From management to maintenance to day-to-day operations, each has to pull together and appreciate the other's role and value. The surgeon needs a clean, well-maintained operating theatre in which to work. Then there's transport to and from the hospital, perhaps a morning coffee. Yes, highly qualified professionals are necessary but so too are the tradespeople, the joiners, electricians as well as the filing clerks, administrators and organisers. We may be impressed by someone's education, their commitment to their career, their status and wealth, but let's not forget that there's a back story to those who both have and haven't achieved dizzy heights professionally. Opportunity is a significant factor in education and career options. Where we're born has a massive bearing on the opportunities open to us; from a supportive, stable family background, neighbourhood, to the right levels of teaching and encouragement. Family values and income levels are a factor. In some families gender is of significance, with a boys education being deemed more relevant than a girls. Also, what else is going on in someone's life, what juggling acts are they required to perform each day? Remember their reasons for how they fill their time are their business, not ours. We simply see the public face, the surface, not the level of difficulty required for them simply to get out of their front door. Their circumstances may mean that they need a flexible job due to childcare issues, or have elderly relatives who require a

lot of attention. They may be in recovery for personal reasons, need a low stress, low responsibility job as their first stepping-stone on the way back to real life, taking things slowly as they improve their confidence levels. Or they may be new to an area, have had a massive change in circumstances, domestic arrangements, finances and are coming out of an especially tough time. Work may be less about money and status and more about getting out and meeting people, making social connections, almost a rehab, gently edging into a new routine, having somewhere to be. Sometimes a job may simply suit us, we're happy to drift along. We're taking care of ourselves, don't need stress and responsibility, may have even left a more high-powered role and that's fine. Work provides a reason to get up, wash, dress, turn up somewhere on time, meet people and earn a little money. There's more to work than simply a job title. It's provides a purpose, order to life, being part of a team, maybe with others relying on your being there, all hopefully helping with confidence and job satisfaction. As Martin Luther King said, if you're going to a road sweeper be the very best road sweeper you can be and take a pride in what you do. One final note. We've all on occasion found a fantastic cleaner, handyman, gardener; they're worth their weight in gold. So much so that we scarcely dare recommend them to our friends for fear that we'll never be able to get them back! With that in mind, won't it be interesting next time you ask someone, what do you do! Carrie asks “I’ve recently moved house and while I love my new home, it needs so much work! I’m fed up of it looking such a mess, but need to spend time saving money before I can make any changes. How can I feel better about the space in the meantime?” Some people can live in chaotic conditions, others prefer to have more comfort and order in their lives. As a Taurus, Carrie’s home is the place where she should feel happiest and most comfortable. She will feel as if she is letting herself down by not being able to afford the changes that will make her place a reflection of her personality. Renovating a home takes time and if Carrie has only recently moved in, she will have known this would be a longterm project. With Mercury and Venus in Aries, she will be impatient to get started on home improvement projects and with Mars in Gemini, once her income improves, she will attack this problem head-on and it won’t take long to transform her surroundings. In the meantime, she can draw on her Taurus need for tidiness to keep her home clutter free and satisfy her sensual side by adding luxurious touches like scented candles, fluffy towels and fine art pieces to her home.

Becky asks “My daughter has recently had her first child and I can’t wait to help babysit and look after my new granddaughter when she goes back to work. However, my husband (a Scorpio) thinks we should be enjoying our retirement and not dedicating so much time to childcare. What can I say to him?” Becky is a Libran with Venus, Mars and Neptune in Scorpio which is why she and her husband will be compatible. Scorpios have powerful personalities and Becky can be as intense and serious about her views as her husband. With Jupiter in the family sign Cancer, Becky is looking forward to being grandma to their granddaughter. Her house will always be open to family, friends and even strangers. It is natural for her to want to help with childcare but she should respect her husband’s wishes too. She might suggest agreeing on the ground rules from the start to ensure that in time they don’t get over-tired or stressed and are able to enjoy their retirement while caring for their grandchild part-time.

Vegan News

KFC is bringing back its popular vegan burger to UK stores! The meat-free burger will be returning as a permanent fixture at 73 KFC restaurants across the country. From August 24th, the fast food chain will be selling the KFC Vegan Burger at 73 restaurants - and you can get your hands on it for just £3.99. As before, it is made up of a Quorn fillet coated in KFC’s signature blend of herbs and spices, with lettuce and vegan mayo in a soft glazed bun. Yum. The vegan burger pays homage to one of KFC’s most popular items: the Chicken Fillet burger. It has the same flavour, crunch and deliciousness KFC is famous for, but with no meat whatsoever. The plant-based item was originally introduced as a permanent fixture in January, but is being brought back after a brief hiatus as KFC continues to expand its menu offering following the Covid-19 lockdown. A KFC Spokesperson said: "Our vegan and flexitarian fans were sadly denied their favourite meat-free treat during lockdown, but now it’s back and it’s time to celebrate. Our kitchen teams having been working hard to adapt to the new safety measures in restaurants, but we reckon now is the right time to unleash one of our fan favourites. We can’t wait to reunite with our vegan friends – we’ve missed you!" You can find out your nearest KFC restaurant by using the store finder HERE Credit: KFC

The supermarkets have made every effort to get carveable main courses and satisfying sides that are suitable for everyone at the Christmas table this year. As well as vegan takes on Christmas dinner must-haves, there are several new dairy-free, showstopping desserts making their way to supermarket shelves for the festive season. Here’s our pick of plant-based launches coming to stores this Christmas.

Asda Yule Log - A sliceable meat-free main, this vegan puff pastry yule log is filled with veggie mince, chestnuts and cranberries, topped with a sage & onion seasoning sprinkle.

Asda Bao Buns - Asda has certainly, er, beefed up its vegan party food selection for this year. There’s a selection of bao buns and dim sum filled with various meat-free fillings like barbecue jackfruit, char sui mushroom and massaman veg. It’s joined by a Mexican-style vegan selection which includes mini chilli bean burritos and vegetable nacho triangles and an oriental selection (pictured at the top) including mini duckless spring rolls, katsu won tons and vegetable fritters.

Asda Vegan Turkey - The soya-based joint is seasoned with black pepper and bay leaves and is filled with a caramelised onion and herb stuffing. It’s pictured alongside the vegetable-based Chestnut, Cranberry and Apple Stuffing Balls and the soy-based Spiced Apple and Orange Cocktail Sausages.

Asda Christmas Cottage Dessert - This sweet winter cottage is completely dairy and egg-free. The dark chocolate shell has a chocolate mousse centre laced with a morello cherry compote and sits atop a tiffin base made with chopped dates, raisins and dark chocolate. Credit: Asda

Aldi Vegan Pigs in Blankets - Meat-free cocktail sausages (which will also be available without the blankets) wrapped in dairy-free pastry, flavoured with herbs and pepper. They’ll be in chillers from the 19th December.

Aldi Vegan Turkey - This carveable soya roast is filled with a cranberry, red pepper, apricit and pumpkin seed stuffing, coated with a barbeque flavour glaze. It will be in the frozen aisle from 16th November.

Aldi Fushion Skewers - Banishing beige from Christmas parties, these bright vegetable skewers come in three flavours: sweet chilli, satay and Thai green curry. They’ll be in freezers from 26th October.

Aldi Hampers - Aldi’s first-ever all-vegan hamper is packed with free-from Christmas pudding, a free-from iced fruit cake bar, medjoul dates, Bean Kind truffles, fruit creams, wine and more. The price isn’t confirmed but it’s likely to be around £29.99. Wicked Kitchen Wellington - One of Tesco’s entries for the vegan main on Christmas day is a hand-rolled nobeef wellington. The centre is made from pea protein with a garlic porcini and chestnut mushroom duxelle and it’s covered in flaky puff pastry. It serves four and will be in stores in late November.

Tesco Wicked Kitchen No-Turkey Roast Crown According to Tesco, this “tender and juicy” turkey alternative carves just like the real thing. It’s made with a combination of soy and wheat protein for texture, is topped with a sage and onion stuffing crumb and is cooked and ready for the table in 45 minutes.

Tesco Wicked Kitchen No Prawn Firecracker Dippers There are three new vegan party food lines on the way under the Wicked Kitchen brand. The no-prawn soybean dippers are seasoned with kicks of spice and smoky barbecue sauce, there are ‘no-chicken’ plant-based drumettes covered in spicy breadcrumbs and oozy, dairy-free no-mozzarella sticks. They’re coming to stores from mid-October.

Tesco Plant Chef BBQ Bon Bons - These bon bons are filled with pulled jackfruit marinated in smoky barbecue sauce, coated in breadcrumbs. They’re £2 for a pack of eight and they’ll be in the frozen aisle from midSeptember.

Tesco Wicked Kitchen Ginger Chai Cake - This launch is the first Wicked Kitchen celebration cake for Tesco. The plant-based ginger sponge is soaked with spiced chai tea and decorated with thick frosting, cinnamon sugar and caramelised ginger pieces. It will be in the cake aisle from the end of September for £9.

Getting The Most Out Of Your 2020 Staycation

With our usual overseas holiday postponed due to country-wide lockdowns and canceled flights, a holiday at home might just be the best substitute for a welldeserved break. The only problem? Figuring out how to separate everyday home life with a full on staycation. Together with Wayfair, we’re showcasing our top 5 ways to get the most out of your staycation, from drinking your favourite quarantinis to 24/7 access to the all-inclusive fridge. Give Your Bedroom a 5-star Makeover Achieve that first night on holiday effect by swapping your usual bedsheets for something a little more hotel-style. Choose sheets that come with a high thread count in either Egypatian cotton or luxury silk for a guaranteed 5-star sleep. Pillow mint optional.

Host a Backyard BBQ Party As our social bubbles extend, now is the perfect time to host a gourmet BBQ party. Forgo the typical meaty mains and stodgy side dishes for flavours from around the globe, from barbecued Moroccan aubergines, curried corn on the cobs and succulent grilled fish. Delicious.

Me, Me, Me Time There may not be a professional masseuse waiting in your bathroom but that shouldn’t stop you from taking the time to pamper and polish. Grab one of your fridge-cooled face masks, add extra bubbles to your bath and prepare to sit back, relax and release your inner goddess.

Extend Your Happy Hour Manhattan, Moscow, Milano…you might not be able to jet set to these cities just yet but that doesn’t mean your drinks cabinet can’t. Make sure to sip on all your favourite quarantinis with a good book by the pool, and by pool when mean the paddling kind. All-Inclusive Fridge While you might miss sneaking an overpriced cola or packet of crisps from the hotel mini bar, trust us when we say your fridge is three times the size and comes without the extortionate price tag. Go on, treat yourself on your staycation. The Lifestyle Blogger UK

BBC New Series

BBC One announces Ralph And Katie, a spin-off of Peter Bowker’s hit drama The A Word. The series will be written by Peter Bowker alongside new and emerging disabled writers to tell the continuing story of Ralph (Leon Harrop) and Katie (Sarah Gordy), an inspirational and loving young couple who are embarking on the biggest adventure of their lives. Ralph and Katie have just had the wedding of the year… so what happens next? Ralph And Katie tracks their first year of married life, with each 30 minute episode featuring a different story focusing on the domestic challenges faced by the newlyweds - challenges faced by all newlyweds, but with the added fact that they have Down’s Syndrome.

BBC One has released a first look image of Hugh Laurie (The Night Manager, House) in Roadkill, a major new political thriller created by David Hare. Peter Laurence (Hugh Laurie) is a selfmade, forceful and charismatic politician. Peter’s public and private life seems to be falling apart - or rather is being picked apart by his enemies. As the personal revelations spiral, he is shamelessly untroubled by guilt or remorse, expertly walking a high wire between glory and catastrophe as he seeks to further his own agenda whilst others plot to bring him down. However events show just how hard it is, for both an individual and a country, to leave the past behind. With enemies so close to home, can Peter Laurence ever out-run his own secrets to win the ultimate prize? Credit: BBC
