To whom it may concern, I had the pleasure of working with Kevin Park when he was an intern with Urban Strategies in the Fall of 2014. I found him to be an intelligent, capable employee and very easy to work with. He has a fine attention to detail and a quick understanding of work assignments, combined with good graphic skills. I would be happy to recommend him for a position appropriate to his professional skills. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further information. SPROUT GARDEN INDEPENDENT SUMMER 2014 IN COLLABORATION WITH W. J. TAI
Sprout is a project that addresses the growing costs of food due to shipping and the environmental damages as a consequence. By keeping food close to home, it reduces costs as well as providing fresh food for the user. The aquaponic system keeps maintenance simple and human intervention is minimal. At this point in time, we have manufactured our third prototype at a cost of approximately $200. Future thoughts will consider various materials, size, and internal systems to try to reduce the cost even further. An app to help monitor the whole aquaponic system is also in development.

The entirety of the Sprout garden can be condensed into a single package, allowing for easy storage and shipping. The entire aim is to be a cheap and portable alternative to other hydroponic systems on the market. The simple method of construction is easy to assemble and disassemble, the entire process taking only 20 minutes.

INVENTED ISOLATION STUDIO 3B FALL 2015 J. HALTER K. WEISS
‘Invented Isolation’ is a project that seeks to create a completely alien sensory experience for the user when compared to the urban environment they step off of. By integrating three steps of separation; 1. entering the structural frame, 2. crawling into the projector dome and 3. activating projectors and speakers, the project isolates the user in a random environment. By forcing the user through three stages of movement; walking, crouching, and crawling, they are thrown into an alternate reality, one complete with visual and audial cues; sort of like a down the rabbit hole experience.

MOUNTAIN RETREAT ENVIRO 2A FALL 2013 T. BOAKE IN COLLABORATION WITH RUI HU
Located in Northern Norway, Snøskrüningen is a mountain retreat that removes itself away from society and is as self-sustaining as possible. A set of photovoltaic panels are arranged on the roof and on the railing in front of the building. A series of thin operable windows along the top of the walls can be opened to create ventilation when needed. A separate water collection and solar heating system is located at the rear of the building. Since the classroom is situated on a slope, it can collect all of the groundwater that runs down from rain and melted snow and store it in a cistern underneath the building.

CASA BAMBU AMPHIB. ARCHITECTURE SUMMER 2014 E. ENGLISH IN COLLABORATION WITH ISABEL OCHOA
Casa BambĂş addresses the issue of seasonal flooding in areas that have a high poverty rate, targeting the countries of Nicaragua, Colombia, and Haiti specifically. The design attempts to be as cheap as possible while also using a material that will stimulate the market and increase economic growth: bamboo. Bamboo grows extremely quickly in the Central American environment. Other benefits include a high carbon dioxide intake and strong root systems that help prevent erosion. After all costs are considered, this floating bamboo house costs approximately $9,500, putting it in the range where NGOs are willing to consider it as a viable solution to the flooding these countries face.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT WORK TERM 1 JAN - APR 2014 ELIZABETH ENGLISH UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO
During my first co-op term, I had the opportunity to work under Elizabeth English to help prepare competition panels for the Holcim competition as well as maintain the Buoyant Foundation Project website and social media. Pictured above and to the right are some of the panels I’ve worked on for one of the entries investigating flooding on a small island, part of Louisiana, and come up with retrofitting strategies to address the urgent needs of the tribe members who still live there. My responsibility was to CAD maps, create 3D models, design for the existing communities, do structural calculations, and prepare drawings while aiding graduate students who were also working on the competition.

URBAN DESIGN ASSISTANT WORK TERM 2 SEPT - DEC 2014 URBAN STRATEGIES INC
At Urban Strategies, I was exposed to a new software, ArchiCAD. After quickly becoming accustomed to it, I was given the responsibility of creating base models and render models for several different projects in Canada and the United Kingdom. I also laid out several booklets and RFPs in indesign for various projects and created base maps in illustrator that would be used for presentations later on. Halfway through the term, I was also given the individual task of updating a campus master plan for Western University. This included updating maps, drawings, and the model to suit the ideas of the committee on the main campus.
