@david douglas high school
Best January 2012 Club Recap We started off the New Year kind of slow, but we’re steadily getting back on task. This month wasn’t that eventful for us, but we did manage to get a few things done. We have volunteer positions available to our club members for the Blanchet House during the week of Spring Break. The sign up sheet is located on our facebook’s documents page. (It is encouraged that at least ten members attend each volunteer date. So if you would please check your calendars, it would be great if you are able to attend.) The Blanchet House serves between 700-900 meals per day, six days a week. You will be working in a real kitchen, and serving warm meals to the needy and homeless in the community. So, take part and make a difference during your break. You definitely won’t be sorry. District Convention is just around the corner! Members who are interested in becoming club officers are required to attend DCON for on-the-site training and be a part of one of the most exhilarating events in the Key Club community. If not, they will have to turn in a waiver stating the reason why they are unable to attend. Hopefully some of you are willing to go and represent David Douglas and Division 62 at the convention. For all those that are going, be sure to have lots of fun and make us proud. T-Shirt Orders are finally in, and hopefully we will get them soon. So for those that haven’t paid yet, be sure to have the money in as soon as possible. If you haven’t seen the design, the image is at the right. Feel free to admire it all you like We would also like to congratulate Wilson’s Club President Raegnar Bartolo for winning this year’s Lieutenant Governor Elections. Way to go Raegnar. And also, thank you to Mr. Giovanni McKenzie for all the hard work that he has done this year for Division 62 and its many clubs. We applaud you for your dedication and for your all guidance. *Sound of Clapping*

2011-2012 MEET THE
OFFICER:
Tony Huynh
President Key Club of Madison High School
What's your favorite thing about being Club President? My favorite thing about being Club President is being able to recruit members and meet new, unique individuals that have so much potential in them. I also enjoy meeting other clubs and establishing relationships with other Club Presidents. What’s your favorite Key Club Project? My favorite project so far is one that is currently taking place. We're doing a Mini-Famine, which is to raise money to feed a student in Africa for one month. The project is still in its early stages, but a quick, unorganized test drive proved that this project has huge potential to be a huge success.
What's your favorite Key Club Moment of 2011-12? My favorite Key Club Moment of 2011-2012 is Key Leader, a weekend event where teens, mostly Key Clubbers, have training on developing leadership skills while making new friends. Are you excited for DCON? OF COURSE I AM! Why am I excited? Well, I don't know the history of DCON, but this would be Madison's first time attending DCON in a long time. I'm also excited because a few other members will be rtagging along, and they're just as enthusiastic as I am, if not, more! Why would you tell someone to join Key Club? No other club or organization can put awesome and swag along with community service. Often times, teens and others think community service/work as boring and tedious, but Key Club will show them a different perspective on service, and maybe even life. It'll also help develop quality skills in life. 5

MEET: New LT. Gov Age: 16 Current Position: Key Club President of Wilson High and Divisional Webmaster Last District: CNH- Region 8- Division 19S- Narbonne Key Club Hobbies: Tennis, Photography, Guitar, Studying (Yes, I’m one of them!) Favorite Artists: John Mayer & Jack Johnson People Who Inspires Me: Joyce Cho, Mark Florendo, Giovanni McKenzie, Samuel Kim, Anaya Lamarr, Chris Meabe, Team CREM, PNW D62 Key Clubs, Kiwanis Advisors, and D19S NARBONNE BEASTY BUNNIES! Best Experience in Key Club: The best experience I had was the start of my home club, Wilson Key Club! All of the paper works, finding an advisor and sponsors, a place to meet, appointing members to be officers and of course recruiting students who doesn’t have any idea what Key Club is! “What do you do in your club? Make Keys?” Every step I took was a challenging yet a rewarding experience for me! This experience led me to a new perspective in life. That I can do something dif8 ferent once in awhile.
2012-13 Div. 62 Lieutenant Governor:
Raegnar Bartolo My greatest accomplishment: My greatest accomplishment was being the President of Wilson Key Club. My members, advisors, fellow club presidents, my Lt. Governor, Giovanni McKenzie and of course Joyce Cho, President of Narbonne Key Club who inspired me to do what I could not do before. I realized that I established an organization in my school that will help the community to be a better place.
What are your plans for the Division 62: Being a Lt. Governor is the same as being the President only on a bigger scale. Division 62 will be tackling a lot of service, fundraising and social projects this year! Why? This will increase our division’s spirit! I believe that if each club has an breathtaking team spirit they will have more active members! Team building it is! What are those projects? 1. Flash Mob for The Eliminate Project. 2. KDCCP Charity Walk 3. Bright Lights 4. WBG and many more! With this said projects, we will aim towards team building in each club and sister clubs, Key Club publicity in Portland (schools and the community), have close relationships with our Kiwanis Clubs and other Divisions, and of course to make a difference not just in our community but to the whole world. This would only be possible if we help each other. Then again, to be a good leader must be a good listener. My mind welcome’s everything! I want our division to be strong. I want YOU to be proud of our division. I want everyone to have fun while we’re making 9 a difference.

2011 DISTRICT PROJECT:
KIWANIS CHILDREN CANCER PROGRAM
ABOUT THE PROJECT The Kiwanis Children Cancer Program was founded by Governor Frank Morehouse of the Pacific Northwest District of Kiwanis International in 2010. Kiwanis Governor Frank’s inspiration was a young cancer patient named Penny. Governor Frank worked at the hospital where Penny stayed. Penny was diagnosed with a brain tumor and would require surgery and radiation therapy. Penny would visit Governor Frank during her hospital stays and talk about what was happening to her. Penny eventually lost her battle with cancer. The KCCP is dedicated to Penny’s memory. The new Pacific Northwest Key Club District Governor, Varun Awasthi saw the need for this project. Our Governor made it his duty to ensure that Key Clubbers across our district knew more about children’s cancer, and make our contribution to curing cancer.
How can you help? The two greatest contributions you could make is to: Help us educate Help us fundraise Sell KCCP Wristbands! (see page ) 12
The ELIMINATE PROJECT 2011-2012 eliminating neonatal & maternal tetanus WHAT IF YOU COULD SAVE A BABY’S LIFE? There are few events more joyful than the day a new baby is welcomed to the world. But in 38 countries, a dreaded disease quickly turns that joy into tragedy. Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) kills one baby every nine minutes — that's 60,000 babies every year who will never grow up, make their mothers laugh, play with friends or dream about the future. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. A significant number of women die from MNT each year too.
