State of the Union By Lieutenant Governor Giovanni McKenzie
For the past decade, Division 62 (formerly Division 60/62) was one of the weaker divisions of our district. In 2010, our division was very small with only one active club. This year however, it’s grown to seven active clubs. With determined and hardworking Key Clubbers, helpful Faculty Advisors, and supportive Kiwanians, our division is striving to make our world a better place. Our divisional membership has grown by 64.6% throughout 2011-2012 due to our newly chartered Key Club in Wilson High School, the retention of the Key Clubs of Madison and Columbia Christian High School, and the growth of Key Clubs in Lincoln, Grant, Madison, and David Douglas High Schools.
A new addition to our division is our resources portal, KEYSIS (The Key Club Service Information WebSite). This portal provides Division 62 Key Clubbers with any type of information, from district convention, officer resources, scholarships, and graphic standards to monthly club reports. This has provided a place where clubs can share ideas, and where members can educate themselves on Key Club related material. With 71 pages and 32 posts, KEYSIS has a staggering number of 5,100 all-time hits since it’s debut in the Fall of 2011 (as of March 3, 2012). 4
2011-2012 State of
the Union
By Lieutenant Governor Giovanni McKenzie
In October 2011, our division had its first monthly Presidents Council Meeting, where Presidents and Vice Presidents across our division meet once a month to discuss important divisional business. This allows Divisional Council Meetings to focus on creating a space for Key Clubbers to be social and learn more about our organization. We had our first Winter Rally in December 2011 with over 70 participants and guest speakers such as District Convention Chair Felicia Nguyen, District Projects Director Samuel Kim, Pacific Northwest Kiwanis Foundation Scholarships Chair Jewell Bailey, and Division 66 Lieutenant Governor Calvin Leung. Partnering with Kiwanis Clubs has been a great interest in our division. In February 2012, the Key Club of Grant High School, the Lieutenant Governor’s home club, chartered a K-Kids club at the K-8 school across the street in partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Portland. As we speak, the Division 62 Lt. Governor is working closely with the Division 62 Kiwanis Lt. Governor and other Kiwanians to charter a Circle K club at Portland State University. Our KCCP/Key Club wristbands became a big hit across the district this year. We sold 1,000 wristbands to Key Clubbers in support of this year’s district project. And more orders are coming to us each day. Be sure to buy some at DCON! Some of our plans for the new Key Club year include the Eliminate Project Flash-mob and the chartering of new Key Clubs in high schools with an abnormal amount of students in low-income household and high drop-out rates. We envision that Key Club will help to reduce the drop-out rates in these Portland high schools because it is proven that students who devote time to serving others perform better in school (Eugene C. Roehlkepartain, Benefits of Community-Based Service Learning). This year has been very productive and successful for Division 62. 5
March of Dimes International Service Partner
How Key Club Helps? Since 1978, Key Clubs have hosted fundraising and awareness programs to support the March of Dimes, raising over $116,000 through fundraisers in 2011 alone! Key Club members, like you, can support the March of Dimes each semester: in the fall, raise awareness by hosting programs throughout November for Prematurity Awareness Month and in the spring, raise funds by participating in March for Babies, the March of Dimes largest annual fundraiser. 6

2011 DISTRICT PROJECT:
KIWANIS CHILDREN CANCER PROGRAM
ABOUT THE PROJECT The Kiwanis Children Cancer Program was founded by Governor Frank Morehouse of the Pacific Northwest District of Kiwanis International in 2010. Kiwanis Governor Frank’s inspiration was a young cancer patient named Penny. Governor Frank worked at the hospital where Penny stayed. Penny was diagnosed with a brain tumor and would require surgery and radiation therapy. Penny would visit Governor Frank during her hospital stays and talk about what was happening to her. Penny eventually lost her battle with cancer. The KCCP is dedicated to Penny’s memory. The new Pacific Northwest Key Club District Governor, Varun Awasthi saw the need for this project. Our Governor made it his duty to ensure that Key Clubbers across our district knew more about children’s cancer, and make our contribution to curing cancer.
How can you help? The two greatest contributions you could make is to: Help us educate Help us fundraise Sell KCCP Wristbands! (see page ) 14
The ELIMINATE PROJECT 2011-2012 eliminating neonatal & maternal tetanus WHAT IF YOU COULD SAVE A BABY’S LIFE? There are few events more joyful than the day a new baby is welcomed to the world. But in 38 countries, a dreaded disease quickly turns that joy into tragedy. Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) kills one baby every nine minutes — that's 60,000 babies every year who will never grow up, make their mothers laugh, play with friends or dream about the future. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. A significant number of women die from MNT each year too.
