What happened at

@ WINTER

RALLY?

On December 30th, 2011, our annual Winter Rally took place at Columbia Christian Schools. We had a chance to meet Key Clubbers within the division, and outside of division, as key clubs from Washington State joined us at our rally. It was our time to hear presentations from Kiwanis advisers, district board members, and the fabulous presidents in division 62 on topics pertaining to scholarships, KCCP, Eliminate project, DCON, etc. We even had a game of grab ball and cake-eating contest. It was absolutely wonderful to see our key clubs mingling and getting to know one another. If you didn’t have a chance to attend this year’s winter rally, be sure to not miss out on the upcoming rallies and divisional events! Let’s go Division 62!

What’s crackin’ ? @franklin high school

Best January 2012 Club Recap What a delightful month December was! Franklin High School started the month off by volunteering at Fred Meyers for Christmas for Kids (12/7/11). Christmas for Kids is a foundation supported by the community with the purpose of providing holiday gifts for underprivileged, elementary children and their families during the holiday season. Children received toys, clothes, shoes, and pictures with Santa. Unlike previous years, FHS Key Club members had a chance to experience the „behind the scenes‟ activities. Members had a chance to see how much effort was put into this event in preventing chaos and ensuring that all children left happy. Some jobs included bagging gifts, directing participants to different parts of the store, shopping assistant and resting station. One member said, “It was touching, because the kids also wanted their family members to get gifts also.” By mid December, FHS Key Club had accumulated enough stars to start filling clear ornaments as their fundraiser for the Eliminate Project. The goal of the Eliminate Project is to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus through three, separate vaccines. The ornaments were filled with paper stars (lucky stars) that members had been making for some weeks. There was also a star making party day that allowed members to have fun together while making stars. The overall efforts contributed to a dazzling and beneficial fundraiser. President Christina Chac took the first batch of star filled ornaments to a Kiwanis meeting and sold out within minutes. One Kiwanis member exclaimed, “Just beautiful!” Thanks to all members who participated for their hard work and to Bob Munger and Judy Munger for their donations! On December 22 and 27, Franklin High School Key Club volunteered for Festival of Lights at the Grotto. It‟s a greatly enjoyed annual FHS Key Club volunteer project. The Festival of Lights is a Christmas celebration involving over one million lights, multiple concerts, puppet shows, a petting zoo, and food. Members made popcorn, operated the cashier station, greeted guests, instructed guest how to use the sanitization station, collected tickets, and help show guest around the event. Halfway through the volunteer shift, members were given a break where they had an unlimited access to bread, soup, jam, peanut butter, cookies, coffee, hot chocolate, and apple cider. Although it was cold, volunteers had a wonderful time. Right before 2011 ended, Franklin High School Key Club participated in Division 62 annual Winter Rally! It was a fun filled event planned by Lieutenant governor Giovanni Mckenzie. Not only did Key Clubbers and Advisors from Division 62 attend, but also from other parts of Oregon and Washington. There were presentations presented by various leaders about elections, DCON, Key Club Cancer Project, flash mob and a cake eating contest just to name a few of the exciteVice President of Franklin High School 4 ments.

2011-2012 MEET THE

OFFICER:

Ross Seeman Vice President Key Club of Grant High School

Why did your run for Club Vice President? I ran because I wanted to be involved more with the direction that the new Key Club was going and also because I saw the potential that Key Club had. What I really wanted to accomplish with Key Club was to make a club that could utilize the lunch period full of students ready to contribute service. I think we have done a very good job of this. So far, just during the lunch period we have made bracelets for Japan relief, made canygrams and santagrams for group fundraising, made cards for children with diseases, and made chocolate roses for valentines day among other things. What’s your favorite Key Club Project? At the of this school year everybody in our club wrote a letter or two to children with diseases around the country. This has to be my favorite project we have done because everybody was able to personally connect with someone that they have never me before and was given the ability to brighten that persons day. I know this is a fairly small project we did, but sometimes its the small things that make a difference. Are you excited for DCON? Yes! I am very excited for DCon because I have never been before. I am excited to be at a massive convention full of enthusiastic Key Clubbers. I hope this meeting gives President Bao and I some ideas for future projects. What do you do outside of Key Club? I coach the pollywog team which is comprised of 27 K-3rd graders. I spend about 5 hours a week with these little kids, its a ton of work but is definitely worth it. I am also the president of my youth group, Unite People. I am very involved with my Business Leadership class, and I work at grant pool as a swim instructor and a lifeguard and am on the swim team, cross country team and tennis team during their respective seasons. 5

2011 DISTRICT PROJECT:

KIWANIS CHILDREN CANCER PROGRAM

ABOUT THE PROJECT The Kiwanis Children Cancer Program was founded by Governor Frank Morehouse of the Pacific Northwest District of Kiwanis International in 2010. Kiwanis Governor Frank‟s inspiration was a young cancer patient named Penny. Governor Frank worked at the hospital where Penny stayed. Penny was diagnosed with a brain tumor and would require surgery and radiation therapy. Penny would visit Governor Frank during her hospital stays and talk about what was happening to her. Penny eventually lost her battle with cancer. The KCCP is dedicated to Penny‟s memory. The new Pacific Northwest Key Club District Governor, Varun Awasthi saw the need for this project. Our Governor made it his duty to ensure that Key Clubbers across our district knew more about children’s cancer, and make our contribution to curing cancer.

How can you help? The two greatest contributions you could make is to:  Help us educate  Help us fundraise  Sell KCCP Wristbands! (see page ) 10

The ELIMINATE PROJECT 2011-2012 eliminating neonatal & maternal tetanus WHAT IF YOU COULD SAVE A BABY’S LIFE? There are few events more joyful than the day a new baby is welcomed to the world. But in 38 countries, a dreaded disease quickly turns that joy into tragedy. Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) kills one baby every nine minutes — that's 60,000 babies every year who will never grow up, make their mothers laugh, play with friends or dream about the future. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. A significant number of women die from MNT each year too.
