partner for the 2020 Australian HR Awards and to recognise the outstanding achievements of all those within this industry. During the past year, the pandemic has presented unique challenges to the HR community. Whether it was supporting executives and CEOs with workforce planning or finding new ways to engage employees during remote working, your role was critical for your business at this time. These awards provided an opportunity to recognise the hard work and commitment this industry showed, often having to deliver tough news to friends and co-workers. It has been our honour to be leading the acknowledgment for excellence in the field of HR during 2020. We congratulate all those who entered and recognise the excellence of the finalists and winners in each category. We wish you all a positive and productive 2021 and look forward to the next Australian HR Awards, taking place later in the year.

CELEBRATING AUSTRALIA’S HR HEROES The Australian HR Awards returned in December to shine a spotlight on the industry’s leaders after an unforgettable 12 months
IAN TRAL AUS
2020
THE 2020 Australian HR Awards celebrated remarkable achievements during a time like no other. When the world of work changed almost overnight, HR professionals led the way through every twist and turn. From managing mass work-from-home rollouts to supporting stooddown staff, every facet of HR has felt the effects

of COVID-19. But as the outstanding calibre of entries proved, the global crisis brought true innovation, collaboration and empathy to the fore. HRD opened nominations in March, and over the next five weeks, the team was blown away by the number of entries from companies large and small. Judges for all 20 categories faced a tough challenge, but in the midst of the crisis, it was inspiring to see HR teams reacting
EVENT PARTNER
METHODOLOGY PROCESS • HRD issued a call for nominations to the title’s nationwide readership of 35,400 HR professionals • Prospective nominees sent in submissions online; HRD received more than 300 nominations
and adapting to the ever-changing times. The panel of 30 judges was composed of industry leaders from some of Australia’s top businesses, including EY, Telstra, Hays and Deloitte. The finalists’ submissions were carefully analysed by the judging panel, who whittled them down to a handful of excellence awardees and a gold winner for each category. Natalie Britt, HR director at Sydney’s International Convention Centre and one of the 2020 judges, described the standard of entries as “phenomenal”. “In my mind, one of the most critical roles during this period has been utilisation of HR professionals,” she said. “The fact that they have been absolutely kicking goals in that space has been hugely important.”
A new way to celebrate While in previous years, the Australian HR Awards have been a golden opportunity to dress up and celebrate in style, COVID-19 restrictions made a physical event impossible
in 2020. But that wasn’t going to stop the HRD team. The event was held virtually for the first time ever, bringing all the usual glitz and glamour to the comfort of attendees’ homes. Held on 3 December, the annual celebration acted as a timely bookend to an unforgettable year. Youi’s chief people officer, Ivan Pierce, who won The Australian Business Lawyers & Advisors Award for Australian HR Director of the Year, described it as “an amazing way to finish a very challenging 2020”. “I felt so honoured to have been selected as a finalist for HR Director of the Year, and then to actually win the award left me speechless,” he said. “I was even more proud of how well our Youi team performed overall, being recognised with excellence awards across three categories and also winning the Best Use of Technology Award.”
Highlighting the ‘human’ in HR Amid this reflection on the successes and hard work within the HR industry in 2020,
• After a lengthy vetting process, the shortlisted candidates were invited to submit additional information to the judges • Each award had its own judges; a total of 30 judges cast their vote to decide on the winners • Gold winners and excellence award recipients for the 20 categories were announced during the virtual awards ceremony on 3 December
CATEGORIES he Australian HR Awards featured T 20 categories, encompassing standout initiatives, individuals and teams from both large and small businesses
KEY DATES • 30 March 2020 Nominations opened • 1 May 2020 Nominations closed • 13 July 2020 Finalists announced on the HRD website • 3 December 2020 Winners announced at the virtual Australian HR Awards ceremony

HRD wanted to take a moment to look back at how Australia responded to the pandemic and how HR leaders reacted to the new environment. Australia first began recording cases from returning travellers at the end of January; by the beginning of March, the country had recorded its first death from COVID-19. Over the next month, community transmission took hold, but both state and federal governments were quick to act. By the end of March, businesses had been ordered to allow employees to work from home, and strict physical distancing and lockdowns were in place. HR leaders were in crisis mode, working hard to manage employee wellbeing and engagement with no guarantee of when normality might return. HR’s support function was truly put to the test last year. But the genuine focus on human capital was a standout factor among the award entries for judge Nadine Castle, director at The Culture Group. “Making sure culture is a shining light – that actually came through in a lot of the submissions, which is wonderful,” she said. “We’re also seeing really innovative ways of dealing with that using technology
and strategy, but also integrating HR into the business.” Fellow judge Suellen McCaffrey, general manager of people and group services at SGCH, said HR leaders had an opportunity to step up to the plate, bringing calm and clear leadership. “You could see there was a very strong reliance on the HR team to be leading people through this period of time where it’s not the norm,” she said. “It was encouraging and inspiring to see in the submissions all the things organisations were doing that are well-rounded and treated people as whole human beings.”
Key HR themes in 2020 Among the uncertainty, the need to support employee health and mental wellbeing quickly became paramount. HR leaders recognised the importance of empathetic, far-reaching mental health initiatives that could be delivered virtually. These HR-driven support systems proved instrumental for employees across the country as they learned to cope with the new reality of remote work. Another key theme among this year’s submissions was the

introduction of flexible work arrangements. Deloitte scooped the win in the Best Workplace Flexibility Program category with its Deloitte Flex initiative. The program was introduced in July 2019 but was invaluable during the early stage of the pandemic, enabling 95% of Deloitte’s workforce to transition to working from home within a week. While flexibility and wellbeing initiatives took centre stage in 2020, HR teams also continued to deliver ambitious goals around diversity and inclusion. Many of this year’s submissions aimed to tackle the gender inequality in Australia’s workforce. EY was crowned the winner of Best Leadership Development Program for its commitment to progressing female leaders. The company’s two-year Accelerate Program aims to build the next generation of female leaders through training, development opportunities and sponsorship from senior managers. The initiative supports the business’s overarching goal for gender equality, creating a pipeline of inspiring, confident female leaders. Programs like Accelerate are vital to improving the corporate landscape for women across Australia.
Looking to the future Undoubtedly, 2020 will stand out as a pinnacle for the HR industry. Now with a seat at the table, HR leaders have a brilliant opportunity ahead to create workforces that are more resilient than ever. With a focus on agility, flexibility and empathy, the lessons learned in 2020 will shape the world of work for years to come. The 2020 Australian HR Awards demonstrated how high HR teams have raised the bar, and we can’t wait to see what 2021 brings. Key Media and HRD are honoured to celebrate industry leaders and shine a light on world-class initiatives and the individuals behind them. Read on to discover more about the finalists and winners. Congratulations to all of 2020’s Australian HR Award nominees and winners – you’ve truly earned it.
