A WORD FROM OUR EVENT PARTNER On behalf of BLUESTONE, we are extremely proud to be the official event partner for the very first New Zealand Mortgage Awards. Recognising and celebrating outstanding achievements in our industry is always important, but perhaps never more so than against the backdrop of 2020. This past year has been one of the most challenging yet for the New Zealand mortgage industry. In an environment in which many Kiwis have been economically impacted, you, as advisers, have played an invaluable role in allowing your customers to safeguard their financial standing and achieve their goals. While New Zealand weathered the storm of a global pandemic much better than most, no shortage of challenges for advisers remains. Fully embracing the incoming licensing regime and staying up to date with ever-changing options available in the market will be key to effectively supporting your customers in 2021. At Bluestone, we are committed to helping you in this important task. We continuously review our technology solutions, policies and processes to make your life easy and help you help as wide a range of borrowers as possible. To all the winners and nominated individuals and businesses, I congratulate you for this well-earned recognition and thank you for your contribution to our industry.

NEW ZEALAND’S MORTGAGE SECTOR CONTINUES TO THRIVE

The New Zealand Mortgage Awards 2021 celebrate the resilience, innovation and dedication of professionals across the sector in a year like no other

PREPARATIONS FOR the 2021 New Zealand Mortgage Awards began in October 2020, when nominations opened and mortgage professionals were called upon to send in submissions. Over the following weeks, the NZ Adviser team were inundated with stories of strength, leadership and adaptability from mortgage teams across the nation. It was heartening to see how so many members of the mortgage profession rose to the challenges presented by the events of COVID-19 and their impact in New Zealand and beyond. The winners were carefully selected by a panel of 13 expert judges, including prominent industry figureheads from organisations like Pepper Money, Prospa, ANZ Bank, The Fundmaster, Squirrel, Mortgage Link, Financial Advice New Zealand, Resimac, Mike Pero Mortgages, Astute Financial Management, First Mortgage Trust and Tony Mounce Mortgages & Insurance. Winners and excellence awardees were announced on 23–25 February 2021 on the NZ Adviser website.

Why are the awards so special? The New Zealand Mortgage Awards is the leading independent awards event for the mortgage profession in this country, recognising the best in the industry. After such a testing year, the awards were well earned, particularly by mortgage professionals who spent the past 12 months navigating the financial impact of the COVID outbreak. It’s more important than ever that, as an industry, we take the time to celebrate the myriad fantastic personal and organisational achievements and contributions on our doorstep.

Recognising the mortgage heroes of 2020 2020 was a particularly poignant time to recognise mortgage professionals – and event sponsors Bluestone were among the many voices acknowledging this. Commenting on the sponsorship, Bluestone’s head of sales New Zealand Susan Griffiths acknowledged that 2020 had

PROCESS  NZ Adviser issued an open call for nominations to the website’s nationwide readership of mortgage professionals.  Prospective nominees sent in submissions online, and NZ Adviser received hundreds of nominations. After a lengthy vetting process, the shortlisted candidates were invited to send in additional information so that the judges had all the details they needed.  Winners and Excellence Award recipients of the 13 categories were announced on 23–25 February 2021. Each award had its own judges. Judges cast their votes to decide on the winners.

CATEGORIES he 2021 New Zealand Mortgage Awards featured T 13 individual and company categories recognising employers, teams and leaders from small to large businesses.

KEY DATES  19 October 2020 Nominations opened  4 December 2020 Nominations closed been an incredibly difficult year for everyone in the industry and said she hoped the awards would recognise the professionals who had been doing tremendous work for their clients. “It has been a difficult year for all concerned,” Griffiths said, “and Bluestone saw these awards as an opportunity to recognise the industry and thank those advisers and industry peers who have shown tremendous resilience, going above and beyond in supporting their customers while also dealing with their own personal journey. “Looking back, the NZ industry has made it clear that they will not let a worldwide pandemic take over. Most businesses adapted very quickly, showing flexibility and innovation to ensure Kiwis were looked after. NZ bucked trends reported by economists, and we are now seeing significant demand across the housing market.” Bluestone’s managing director New Zealand Peter Wood echoed those sentiments. “It is also time that the advisers were

formally recognised for their ongoing contribution to the mortgage market,” he added. “The credit landscape has potentially changed forever, and it is important for lenders to work with advisers and navigate the way forward.” Despite a slew of global and local difficulties, many within the mortgage community stood defiant and continued to prosper in 2020. This was particularly evident in the case of NZFSG, winner of Aggregator of the Year. For NZFSG, 2020 was a busy year that saw the group merge with financial advice support provider Kepa, a move that created an “adviser powerhouse” dealer group with over 1,600 members. This brought Kepa’s network of 400 advisers together with NZFSG’s 1,200, plus its affiliate, Loan Market. The new dealer group will be settling over $17bn in mortgages and issuing $30m in life insurance premiums each year. “With the industry facing complex and sweeping regulatory changes, New Zealand’s independent financial advisers are facing an increasing compliance burden,” said NZFSG’s chief executive, Brendan Smith. “By combining our respective businesses and expertise, we can support advisers to navigate these changes with the added benefits of genuine scale.”

Looking to the future Beyond the global crisis, 2020 is likely to have long-lasting implications for the mortgage industry in general. It was a year in which many of the long-held industry-wide assumptions were flipped upside down and needed extensive re-evaluation. Many of the nominations reflected the admirable manner in which mortgage professionals, teams and organisations throughout New Zealand quickly adapted to a multitude of ‘new normals’.

Major themes: business development, teamwork and service Some notable themes emerged from the nominations, revolving around dedication to business development, teamwork and excellent service. Unsurprisingly, in a year when the industry had to double down on service to push deals forward, the importance of business development managers was highlighted like never before. Stepping forward for the much-coveted Non-Bank BDM award was Mark Beams of Bluestone Mortgages. Beams joined Bluestone in 2019, capitalising on his eight years of experience in retail banking and three years as a mobile mortgage manager at Kiwibank, where he helped thousands of customers into their homes. “With Luke joining us, our BDM team gains added capacity to provide the high-value, face-to-face support advisers have come to expect from us,” said Bluestone’s Sue Griffiths.

“We want every adviser in New Zealand to have ready access to face-to-face support so they can continue to grow their business and find flexible solutions, from prime to specialist, for their Kiwi customers.” The COVID-19 pandemic also presented an opportunity for companies to leverage the power of innovation in order to thrive, particularly in servicing their millennial client base. When a dedicated group of employees work together as a finely oiled machine, great things are possible – and iConsult proved this when it took home the Mortgage Brokerage of the Year (1–10 Staff ) award. Founder Satyan Mehra is one of the most respected young lending specialists in the industry and was recently named a ‘Top Adviser’ in NZ Adviser’s 2020 report. “I ventured into property in 2009 and started investing, and I’ve really grown personally as an investor over that time,” Mehra said. “I started iConsult in 2017, and that’s the business that I’m really the most passionate about. I’m very passionate about businesses and property, and I really noticed the difference I could make to people’s lives. “A lot of my clientele is composed of investors and bigger business owners with commercial portfolios – that’s a significant area of expertise. But I also want to give back and to be able to guide younger people into property.” iConsult is not alone in celebrating success this year. Brokerage The Mortgage Girls also left its mark. In fact, when The Mortgage Girls co-director Elyce Maxwell found out that her organisation had won the Regional Mortgage Brokerage of the Year award she was delighted – so much so that she was sure “the neighbours thought we’d won the Lotto!” “We’re always putting our clients first,” said The Mortgage Girls co-director Holly Sullivan. “Dedication to our clients has been ingrained in our team culture since day one, and everyone shares our values.” Shared values have led to shared success, with another win scooped up by The Mortgage Girls broker Laura Carter, who received the Excellence Award for Young Gun of the Year. “I’m so proud of Laura,” said Maxwell. “Her heart and soul is for her clients, and her award recognises how good she really is.” Maxwell believes the award reflects how the culture of The Mortgage Girls has allowed the team to grow, thrive and deliver their best, and how the team have been hired specifically because of their can-do attitudes.

Key Media and NZ Adviser are honoured to present the 2021 New Zealand Mortgage Awards highlighting the best in class in this industry. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners – you are an inspiration to the mortgage profession. To find out more about the achievements of this year’s finalists and winners, read on.

The value of celebration There’s no doubt that awards such as these help to uphold the standards of the mortgage profession. The professionals, teams and organisations that were nominated have all displayed excellent business practices, great levels of service and exemplary adaptability, setting the bar for others to follow.

NEW ZEALAND MORTGAGE AWARDS

SATYAN MEHRA iConsult Mortgage Brokerage In a market crowded with competition, Satyan Mehra has proven that there is always room for excellence. In just three years he has established iConsult, an independent mortgage brokerage, as one of the most innovative and successful in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Already the winner of multiple awards, Mehra can now add three accolades from the 2021 New Zealand Mortgage Awards to the trophy cabinet: Mortgage Brokerage of the Year (1–10 Staff), Best Customer Service from an Individual Office, and Independent Mortgage Adviser of the Year. The business has grown almost entirely

from word-of-mouth recommendations, with clients and lenders praising Mehra and his team for their agile thinking, strong financial analysis, honesty and tenacity. Deep financial and business acumen help them see solutions where others see roadblocks. In a risk-averse market, borrowers are being increasingly turned down by lenders, often unnecessarily. This is where iConsult excels, establishing solid business cases to support a client’s loan application, helping them to access mortgages from non-banks as well as structuring innovative solutions through the main banks. iConsult ensures

that clients are more than capable of servicing their debt without stress, helping fledging property investors and first home buyers achieve their financial objectives. Mehra is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and has more than 10 years’ experience across retail and business banking, external reporting and internal audits for ANZ and BNZ. Outside iConsult he has stretched his entrepreneurial wings to early childhood education, accommodation, property investment and development.

THE MORTGAGE GIRLS The team at THE MORTGAGE GIRLS are ecstatic to have won three awards in 2021, including an Excellence Award for customer service. Co-director Elyce Maxwell says she was so excited when she found out they had won the Regional Mortgage Brokerage of the Year award, “I think the neighbours thought we’d won Lotto. I’m absolutely stoked.” Maxwell says most industry awards focus on the bottom line, which may not reflect the best customer experience. She believes the awards the brokerage has received are an endorsement of the quality of service The Mortgage Girls provides its clients. The team at The Mortgage Girls are focused on helping individuals and families into homes. They have a mission to ensure their clients’ goals are financially achievable while the clients can still enjoy their lifestyle at the same time. In their first full year in 2017, they helped 48 clients achieve their goals. Since then, they have grown exponentially and served over 600 clients, including 193 clients just this year to date. “People who have used us know how good we are, but the [Brokerage of the Year] award will give others confidence

that we’re at a nationally recognised standard. Our clients are our everything, and their amazing feedback on these awards has been humbling,” Maxwell says. Co-director Holly Sullivan adds that “we’re always putting our clients first. Dedication to our clients has been ingrained in our team culture since day one, and everyone shares our values”. Shared values have led to shared success, with The Mortgage Girls broker Laura Carter picking up the Excellence Award for Young Gun of the Year. “I’m so proud of Laura,” says Maxwell. “Her heart and soul is for her clients, and her award recognises how good she really is.” Sullivan says the brokerage has picked its team “because of their attitudes and how awesome they are. Our culture enables our team to grow, thrive and deliver their best, and it shows. Our whole team is amazing”. While the team are thrilled with their wins, nothing really changes for The Mortgage Girls. “It’s great to win awards, but we didn’t start The Mortgage Girls to win awards,” Sullivan says. “We’re simply looking for ways to create a better experience for our clients.”

NZ FINANCIAL SERVICES GROUP (NZFSG) NZ FINANCIAL SERVICES GROUP (NZFSG) was created in February 2013 by the merger of Allied Kiwi and Loan Market NZ, with the core purpose of helping Kiwis achieve their financial dreams. Now, with 1,400 financial advisers helping customers own their homes, keep their homes and protect their families in times of need, NZFSG is well on its way to achieving its vision of turning financial dreams into reality for 500,000 Kiwis by 2023. In the last financial year, the group settled more than $20bn in collective loan volume, helping some 45,000 Kiwis.

Over the past 12 months, NZFSG has completed the rollout of MyCRM v3 across its network, providing integrated new technologies, such as online fact-find and applications, file invite, and illion BankStatements. The group also secured an IS027001 certification; introduced new customer-facing tools Hello Book and Game Plan amid the COVID-19 crisis; and launched the first NZ-direct online lending application via its Select Home Loan product, significantly reducing turnaround times. Another major focus for NZFSG over the past year was getting its licence ready and providing regular access to

dedicated Level-5 training strands to ensure advisers were ready to operate post 15 March 2021. NZFSG conducts regular communication with members through its annual events program, including bi-annual conferences in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch; virtual accelerator sessions for home loan advisers; and a possible annual international conference this year. NZGSG was particularly proud of its Crush Corona campaign, which challenged its network to contact every single customer to make sure they were OK.

FIRST MORTGAGE TRUST Following 20-plus years of Trust growth, the ownership of First Mortgage Trust’s management company changed hands in early 2019 with its acquisition by New Zealand-based Capital Group. Also founded in 1996, Capital Group provides capital and specialist advice to the New Zealand property market and brings a wealth of knowledge to First Mortgage Trust’s Board.   First Mortgage Trust offers two high-performing managed investment funds and is New Zealand’s largest first mortgage non-bank lender.

FMT is an integral part of New Zealand’s financial system, offering borrowers a competitive non-bank alternative and solutions that may not otherwise be available to them.   Since 1996, FMT’s team has been helping investors, builders, developers and other property clients obtain competitive and commercially viable property finance. FMT takes pride in how far it has come, including through difficult times, surviving events such as the GFC, when it never missed a single

distribution to its investors, and manoeuvring through COVID-19, going from strength to strength but always keeping its investors and borrowers as its core focus and reason for being.   In October 2020, FMT reached a significant milestone with $1bn in funds under management, a testament to the confidence of its investors, and this year also celebrates 25 years in business. The FMT team are very proud of their achievement and are looking forward to the next 25 years.
