Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to spend a fortune or go to design school to revamp your home. “It’s all about simplicity,” says Susan Yoder, interior design expert for builder Clayton Homes. “A little goes a long way when it comes to home décor and living spaces. Only a few simple changes can make a big difference and allow you to create a room you’ll be itching to show off to friends and family.”

To breathe new life into your space, Yoder recommends these tips:

1. Pops of Color

“Nothing livens up a room like a bright pop of color,” Yoder says. If you have neutral-toned furniture, add lamps, curtains and accessories in bold hues. If you’re up for a painting challenge, an accent wall is a great way to incorporate color into a space. Choose your favorite color from a throw pillow or wall art piece in the room to pull the look together.

2. Varying Textures

A room tends to get boring when it focuses on only one texture, so it’s important to create a sense of balance. Try varying the fabric types on your sofa and curtains. Add in some metal or wooden accents to draw the eye around the room. You can even play with lighting to reflect off certain objects and create visual interest.

3. Antique Feature

Choose an antique or unique piece of décor to be the inspiration for the room. This could be a rug, lamp, chair or even a chandelier – anything that gets you energized and motivated. Get creative and run with the theme it creates. Or if your style is more modern, an antique object will stand out among your contemporary décor.

4. Symmetrical yet Functional

The furniture collection in a room should form a restful, symmetrical layout. It’s all about balance. There should be between three and 10 feet between each seat. Additionally, instead of pushing each piece up against the wall to create more space, give your furniture a bit of breathing room a few inches from the wall. This makes the room appear open and airy.

5. Clutter-free Organization

Getting rid of clutter is a grand challenge for most homeowners. When you decide to take on the mess, drawers and cabinets are your best friends. Take some time to go through your belongings and decide what to keep, donate or throw away. Store any leftover items that can cause clutter in an organized, out-of-sight area.

Even when everything goes according to plan, moving is pretty much guaranteed to be a stressful process. If something gets lost or damaged, however, it’s only going to get worse. That’s why it’s important to make sure that certain luxury items are insured before they’re packed and transported to your new home.

While homeowners insurance will usually cover you in the event of a break-in or natural disaster, such as a fire or hurricane, you could still be liable for anything that happens while moving. Unless the air conditioner is brand new, you should ensure that it gets maintenance. You’ll need to have the filter changed, since it’s responsible for removing dirt, dust and allergens from the air. A dirty filter will cause your HVAC system to work harder, as well as produce poor air quality.

You’ll also need to have your HVAC system inspected by a professional. They can perform a tune-up. Air conditioner maintenance will help you save money because the unit will use less energy and last a lot longer.

Water Heater Maintenance

Your water heater likely needs to be drained if it’s been used before. Sediment has a tendency to build up in water heaters over time, and few sellers have this taken care of before they sell their home. If the sediment hardens, your water heater will become less efficient. Draining the water heater will help get rid of the sediment and ensure your heater works normally long after you move into your new home.

Plumbing Maintenance

Inspecting the pipes in a property you’ve just moved into is crucial. Look under your sinks to make sure the pipes aren’t leaking. Also, if there are water stains on your ceiling, you may have a plumbing leak. Additionally, you’ll need to check your faucets for drips. If you notice any problems, call a plumber who can ensure that your sinks, toilets and pipes are in good working condition. Plumbing maintenance can help you save a lot of time and money further down the road.

You will need to perform basic maintenance when you move into a home. You’ll need to clean your gutters in order to protect the foundation, as well as perform water heater maintenance and air conditioner maintenance. Additionally, it’s important to make sure your plumbing system is in good shape.

BE SMART about SMART HOME SAFETY

Smart home technology has made our daily lives easier and more automated, but it also opened the virtual door to intruders and hackers. As smart home technology grows, so do the risks of being hacked, which can stop some customers from adopting these amazing technologies for their homes. There have been some scary stories lately of hackers tapping into security cameras and other technology, but with the proper precautions, you will make your home incredibly safe from hackers.

Keep your smart home safe with these tips

USE STRONG PASSWORDS

We’ve all heard it countless times, but having a strong password really is the first step against hackers and is enough to keep most out of your devices. However, many people prioritize creating passwords that are easy to remember (or that don’t change) over their home’s security. The best passwords are a combination of capital and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. Longer, “pass phrases” or sentences also work well. As a rule of thumb, change your passwords every time you add a new device to the network, or at least every few months.

BE SELECTIVE WITH SMART HOME DEVICES

The growth of smart home technology means that not every product is created equally. Before bringing something into your home that could put your privacy and safety at risk, be sure to do your research. In general, use products from brands you are familiar with—bigger brands typically have more updates and better customer service just in case hacking does occur.

TURN OFF UNUSED DEVICES

It can be tempting to always leave every device plugged in and turned on, but that just gives hackers more opportunities to find a way in. Powering down your router or smart home devices that don’t need to be on all the time, can keep your network more secure.

UPDATE APPS AND FIRMWARE

Most people generally remember to update their smartphone apps but updating the apps and firmware in smart devices around the house can be a different story. Just like mobile apps, smart devices are constantly being updated and often come out with updates to increase performance, remove bugs, or improve safety. Using an old version of a device’s firmware makes it easier for hackers to attack because the firmware is vulnerable and not running at its full potential.

WATCH THE WI-FI NETWORK

Putting smart home devices on a public wireless internet network makes them much easier to hack and makes them more visible to hackers. Instead, opt for a private home network that has a strong password and network protection. To be even safer, security experts recommend putting your smart home devices on a separate wireless network from your home computer, which greatly reduces the risk of hacking across devices.
