The 18th annual Florida Keys Seafood Festival is Saturday, Jan. 13 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. AND Sunday, Jan. 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bayview Park in Key West. Presented by the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association (FKCFA), the seafood festival celebrates our community by bringing people together in a fun environment to sample the local catch. The family-friendly event was created to showcase local seafood and the Keys’ commercial fishing industry by providing the freshest seafood available. Each year our fishermen and women proudly offer a variety of locally caught seafood at reasonable prices. A $10 admission fee per adult is good for both days and automatically enters that person into a raffle for $250 worth of seafood. Children under 12 are admitted free. All proceeds benefit sustainable fisheries management programs and scholarships for high school graduates with at least one parent working in the commercial fishing or a marine-related industry.
ABOUT THE FKCFA In addition to fisheries management, the FKCFA takes an active role in our community by focusing its efforts on both short- and long-term benefits for its members with scholarship programs, seafood festivals, grant funding for special projects, educational programs and environmental stewardship through trap design studies and trap cleanup programs. ON THE MENU The festival offers an array of seafood, including fried fish baskets or platters with slaw and black beans & rice; fried shrimp basket; grilled spiny lobster tail platters; stone crab claws with Key lime mustard sauce; peel-andeat Key West pink shrimp with cocktail sauce; smoked fish dip with crackers’ creamy lobster bisque; Bahamian-style conch chowder, conch ceviche and conch fritters. Hot dogs and hamburgers also will be for sale. Beverages include beer, wine, rumaritas, rumrunners, water, soda and coffees. Desserts include Estella’s Famous Flan and Nutella, Key lime pie and other homemade treats.
PETTING ZOO
An exciting new addition to this year’s Key West Seafood Festival is a petting zoo for the kids. Julio’s Zoo is Julio Delgado’s mobile zoo that caters to special occasions and family-friendly events. Julio’s Zoo offers a variety of animals, carefully chosen to ensure the safety and sociability of the animals and their new human friends. The kids can get up close and personal for photo ops with an assortment of animals. Potential visitors include sheep, llamas, pygmy goats, white-faced capuchin monkeys, kinkajous, toucans, armadillos, sheep and goats.

FLORIDA KEYS SEAFOOD FESTIVAL 2024
FISHING FAMILIES Generations of the Hill family of Key Largo have played major roles in commercial fishing and community development in the Florida Keys for nearly three-quarters of a century, and they continue to do so. The family’s roots date back to West Virginia, where Jack Hill was born. His family moved to Miami when he was very young. Dottie’s father and grandparents were from the Bahamas, but Dottie was born and raised in Miami. After serving our country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Jack Hill came back from active duty and promptly fell in love with the girl across the street, Dottie. Jack Hill had met the love of his life and the two married in 1948. Dottie’s father, Joseph Sands, was an experienced lobster fisherman from the Bahamas who had immigrated to the United States. His son-in-law, Jack, soon mastered the skills needed to be a good lobster fisherman. He plied his trade in the nearshore waters off Miami and the extreme Upper Keys long before the Ocean Reef Club enclave came into being. The Hill family grew and soon added two sons, Tom and Rick, to the clan. Growing up and working beside their father, the boys began to learn the trade. Duties often included recovering lath boards from construction and demolition projects. The brothers would hammer away and remove nails to recycle and clean the used lath to build lobster traps. They also dipped traps in oil in those days to deter marine growth. Today the use of pressure-treated lumber for trap construction has eliminated the need for such activity. In 1966, following Hurricane Betsy, the family moved to the Florida Keys.
Jack was a member of a co-op called Keys Lobster. His elder son Tom began to pursue college interests, while Rick acquired a commercial fishing boat named F.V. ‘GRUMPY.’ In addition to lobster, Rick began harvesting large quantities of ballyhoo, which were and still are widely used as baitfish for everything from snapper and grouper to billfish, to satisfy the enormous demand from recreational and commercial fishermen throughout Florida. After graduating from college Tom focused his efforts on sales and marketing. Business was booming, the economy was robust and the Hill Family was uniquely positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for nutritional seafood products and the bait that was needed to catch them. In 1972 Jack Hill Bait & Seafood was born and the footers were dug for the original building located on Ocean Bay Drive. The fledgling business began to grow and four years later the corporate name was changed to Key Largo Fisheries. Demand then grew for Dottie’s unique seafood creations, especially her conch salad and smoked fish dip. Today those recipes continue to tantalize the taste buds of diners at the ever-popular Backyard Café located on the Key Largo Fisheries premises and sold in their onsite retail market.
The old adage, “The only sure thing in life is change” rings true. Several years ago, the Hill brothers were approached with an offer to purchase Key Largo Fisheries by the Charney Brothers from Connecticut, who were experienced in both the seafood and restaurant industries from their operations in Connecticut. A deal was made. But the Hill family isn’t finished. Both Tom and Rick remain active in advisory capacities to Key Largo Fisheries and in fisheries management. Rick’s son Adam serves on the board of directors of FKCFA. He is an active commercial fisherman in Key Largo and also has a local retail market. Tom’s son Timothy works for Aylesworth Bait Co. in Largo, Florida and teaches seafood safe-handling practices through the state-certified HACCP management program. We are so very proud to have the Hill family as an integral part of this community and the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association. Thank you all — Tom, Gail, Rick, Jayne, Carrie, Tim, & Adam. — By Capt. Bill Kelly
THANK YOU, BILL KELLY!
While vacationing in 1977 on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Bill Kelly met Capt. Don Gurgiolo and George Wood of Islamorada at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center. Bill’s interest in fishing caught Capt. Don’s attention and he told Bill that if he wanted to fish he should come down to the Keys. That’s all it took and they were on their way. Finding the Gonfishin’ docked at what was then called Holiday Isle in Islamorada, Bill and his family again met up with Capt. Don, who invited Bill to ride along on his charters to learn all about fishing. That began Bill’s 32-year fishing career in Florida, the Keys and the Bahamas. He spent a few years on Charter Boat Row, where he met a group of fishermen from Dayton, Ohio and ultimately met the family he would spend the next 30 years working for aboard their private boats, from a 32’ Chris Craft to a 42’ Bertram to a 47’ Buddy Davis and finally to a 58’ Ocean Sports Fisherman. After the family retired from fishing, so did Capt. Biil, but he couldn’t leave the fishing industry entirely. Bill was then approached by Capt. Tony Iarocci from Marathon to temporarily help out with FKCFA while they looked for a new executive director to fill the empty position. That was in 2010, and the “temporary” job for Bill lasted more than 13 years. Maybe now it’s time for the next chapter in Capt. Bill’s life. It’s time to hang up that “GONFISHIN” sign again.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE:
SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
SUSTAINABILITY:
OUR KEY TO SUCCESS
Every year the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to high school students from Key Largo to Key West who have one or both parents employed in the commercial fishing industry or a marine-related field. The funds can be used for tuition and other expenses at college or career technical schools. Recent recipients have used their scholarship money to help with tuition for welding school, for textbooks at Florida State University and for rent and living expenses while in school. Scholarship applications are available at all Monroe County public high schools by Feb. 1 of each year.
JASON YARBROUGH ALYSSA TURNER How did you use your scholarship funds? I used my scholarship funds to buy textbooks for classes and to help with living expenses such as rent. What school did you attend? I attended Florida State University and graduated in December 2020. What is your current career? I am currently a lab technician at Florida State University. My lab studies the ecology of bryozoans in the Gulf of Mexico and corals in Moorea, French Polynesia. Do you have memories of fishing while growing up in the Keys? I didn’t do a lot of fishing while growing up. However, I do have a lot memories of going out with my dad on the first night of lobster season.
How did you use your scholarship funds? I used my scholarship money to help with tuition and living costs while I currently attend welding school. What school did you attend? I am attending a universal technical institute in the Fort Lauderdale area. What is your current career? My current career path is something I’m still figuring out. When I finish here, there are different paths available in the welding industry, so I’m still giving it a lot of thought. Do you have memories of fishing while growing up in the Keys? Yes, I have lots of fishing memories while growing up in the Keys. I’ve been helping my dad with our commercial lobster business since I was young and I still do that. I have spent plenty of days on the boat down here in the Keys and it’s still one of my favorite things to do.
Our nation’s seafood fisheries, when sustainably harvested, are a renewable resource. Sustainability is the management plan implemented nationwide on more than 500 species of fish to prevent stocks from becoming overfished. Under this concept, careful monitoring of fish populations, conducted through regular stock assessments, keeps fisheries managers abreast of population dynamics. Should a species enter a state of overfishing, management measures such as reducing catch limits and shortening seasons are implemented to keep stocks healthy. Data collection and stakeholder input are essential to the process of acquiring the best available science when determining levels of stock abundance. The Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association is proud to have 11 of its members currently volunteering their services on both state and federal advisory panels. In so doing, the FKCFA is providing critical information to protect the fish populations we harvest throughout the Florida Keys. Most recently, the Commercial Stone Crab Advisory Panel to the State of Florida, formed by our association, initiated significant steps to increase their biomass. They include:
Keys Weekly Newspapers 9709 Overseas Hwy Marathon, FL. 33050 305.743.0844 Key West office 5450 MacDonald Ave. No. 5 Key West, FL. 33040 305.453.6928 Tavernier office 91760 Overseas Highway Tavernier FL 33070 305.363.2957 www.keysweekly.com
• Increasing minimum harvestable claw size by one-eighth of an inch to 2 7/8 inches. • Shortening the season by two weeks to protect spawning females. • Mandatory implementation of 2 3/16-inch cull rings on all stone crab traps beginning with the 202324 season. Cull rings will allow juvenile crabs and other unwanted bycatch to escape traps. Together, all three measures are designed to increase biomass by more than 1 million pounds over the next three years. Fishing is not the only thing that can affect fish populations. Water quality is also essential to maintaining fish populations through a healthy marine environment. We can all do our part by properly recycling plastic products and responsibly disposing of other trash items. Help keep the Florida Keys special for fish, visitors and generations to come. So, kick back, relax and enjoy our seafood festival while also enjoying freshly caught and sustainably harvested spiny lobsters, stone crabs, snapper, grouper and of course Key West pink shrimp. — Capt. We provide comprehensive policies to protect your assets while working on the water. We offer: • Hull and Machinery Coverage • Protection & Indemnity (Liability) Coverage • Marine General Liability Coverage • Equipment Coverage (Hand Tools, Forklifts, Compressors, etc.)
