This photograph was sent to us by one of our readers, Luis Morales, who works at Le Bistrot Suisse on the Avda de España in Calahonda. A very suitable photograph for this time of year. KEY BEAUTY My Hair in the Sun
By Tracy, Hair Magic
This month we are going to give you some tips on looking after your hair in the summer heat. We are going to look at colouring, treatments, green hair (kids) chlorine damage and when we are on the beach.
6
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
COLOURING If you can, stay away from reds and coppers as these colours fade very quickly in the sun. Go for chocolates, caramels and blonde colours as the pigments are stronger and won’t fade as quickly. Use colour-fade protection shampoos and conditioners. GREEN HAIR When your hair or your children’s hair turns green, don’t worry as it’s really common. The worst thing you can do is to try using chemicals to get this out. I know it’s really messy, but tomato ketchup works a treat! However, as soon as you go back into the pool, the green will come back. As soon as it starts to get colder and you stop using the pool, the green will fade out really quickly on its own. Alternatively use a salt water pool (a very expensive alternative), but causes very little damage. Chlorine causes a lot of damage to our hair, colour fade and dryness not only to your hair but it will dry out your skin as well, so use body moisturiser every night. The only way to stop the damage caused by chlorine is to wash and condition your hair every day (evening). If you leave the chlorine in your hair, it carries on working, as it is a type of bleach, for 24 hours or so, then will also help prevent it going green. When you swim in the sea, your hair feels terribly dry but don’t worry about this – it’s the salt making it feel dry which causes no damage. When you wash and condition, it will go back to its normal self. Try coming to the hairdressers every couple of weeks and having a professional conditioning treatment. You will be surprised how good it will feel. Also try to keep your hair covered as much as possible in the heat of the day. I know this isn’t easy, but it really helps. If you need any advice, call Hair Magic and we will be happy to give you a free consultation. Ask for either Charlotte or Tracy.

KEY BEAUTY Hairdressing Tutor Alex Ainsworth talks Bleached Hair!!
By Marbella Beauty Academy
Khloe Kardashian recently unveiled her dramatic new look to the world, after sister Kim went back to Black!! Love it or hate it, it is so on trend at the moment! If you are considering following the new trend, it is highly important to be aware that too much bleach can be life threatening to your locks! Always go to a professional for this kind of procedure! Trying to achieve this look at home yourself can lead to a major disaster and will cost more to correct. Due to the irreversible damage it can create, it’s best to do your research. There are plenty of online options where you can impose different hair over a picture of yourself; this way you can see if you like the look before taking the plunge! http:// www.hairstylesimulator.com/ If you have hair darker than a light brown, then the process may not be possible for you. Listen to your hairdresser’s advice. If you are going ahead with the change, then prepare your locks beforehand. Be nice to them, condition them well, use leave in conditioners and get as much moisture in there as possible! Most importantly, remember not to wash your hair for a minimum of 2 days beforehand or it can cause severe burning to your scalp. On subsequent applications of the bleach, it is highly important not to overlap the product or you may be taking your hair home in a bag!

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
Once you have gone ahead with the Kardashian blonde, be prepared to trim regularly; bleached hair gets damaged so much easier than darker hair! Also be prepared to visit your hairdresser for regular toners, especially if your hair is on the darker side. You can always use purple colour shampoos which help to neutralize brassy tones. To help maintain the condition of your newly blonde locks, follow these simple tips • Limit the times you shampoo, try to shampoo much less than before, and only once rather than twice • Use a gentle shampoo and a highly intense conditioner • Give your hair treatments every time you wash • Use of a silver shampoo can help maintain look • Use only lukewarm water, never hot! • Finishing with a cold rinse can help make the hair appear healthier • Use leave in moisturising products • Avoid using too much heat • Trim regularly to avoid hair splitting • Avoid exposing it to the sun, especially at the beach! Now you are armed with the bleach blonde survival kit, go forward and see if blondes really do have more fun! MBA are loving the new Grey hair trend! Train with Alex and change your future into a creative one…Level 2 & Level 3 places available for September.

KEY FEATURE Women Survivors of Domestic Violence Need Our Help Our Coffee Break for Women Inland group meets once a month to network, help and support each other and we have supported a variety of charities over the years. In December 2014 we bought Christmas presents for 68 children of families broken by domestic violence. The mothers were under the protective wing of Amusuvig, a charity founded by two survivors of domestic violence, Anabel Padial and Loli Lara. Instead of forgetting about their misfortune once they had recovered, Anabel and Loli decided to use their experience to help others leave an abusive situation and begin a new life. After Christmas, in January 2015, three of the young women from AMUSUVIG came to our meeting to thank us and tell us more about their work. An emotional roller coaster followed as we listened to an account of what happens when a women leaves an abusive relationship. The journey often begins at the police station where the victim desperately needs help and someone to talk to. The women of AMUSUVIG as survivors themselves are all too aware of how a woman feels and they are called to help at that very moment. They support and care for the victims, emotionally and in every practical way possible through this very difficult time. It sometimes takes months to get to court where
By Carol Engelmann
their case can be heard and suitable decisions and measures can be put into place to protect the woman and her children. There is little help available to the victims of domestic violence which makes the work that AMUSUVIG do, even more important. They urgently need funds to finance projects to house and care for women and children in the most heart-breaking circumstances. Sell to Donate is a Facebook page set up by “Coffee Break” women to help raise funds for Amusuvig. On the page anyone can sell an item and donate at least 10% to Amusuvig. It is growing very quickly and proving to be a great success. It’s an excellent way of selling a quality item, donating a small fee and still having enough to buy something else. A thrifty, fun solution to raising funds, we think! AMUSUVIG is a registered charity CIF: G – 93248508 and you can help by making a donation via PayPal to amusuvigdonate@gmail.com. If you know of a job possibility, you could help a woman take the first major step to independence. What could be more rewarding? Please email me with any suggestion you may have, nothing is too trivial. Carol Engelmann: engelspain@hotmail.com.

KEY BEAUTY Shoe Saver a Perfect Fit for Dragons The ingenious shoe accessory which walked away with the backing of Kelly Hoppen MBE and Deborah Meaden following a successful pitch on BBC’s Dragons’ Den is now available to purchase on the Costa del Sol from authorised stockists. Created and manufactured in the UK by Ally Stevenson, multipurpose heel stoppers Clean Heels prevent women from sinking into soft ground when they walk in heels outdoors and also protect the heels themselves from damage and dirt. The tubing around the heel is soft so not to mark or damage the heels. Clean Heels also makes walking in heels easier and more comfortable; thanks to the rubber base providing increased support and allowing better balance. Ally, creator of Clean Heels, came up with the idea a decade ago when she was a guest at an outdoor wedding reception. She popped beer bottle tops under her high heels to help her stand on the grass during a speech and decided there and then to come up with a more permanent solution. “Women will never stop wearing heels and Clean Heels means they don’t have to worry about sinking into soft ground outdoors, or about damaging or dirtying the heels.” Ally said. “A gorgeous pair of heels can make women feel more confident and sexy but that evaporates if you’re left teetering on mud or grass. These little tools empower women who wear high shoes and gives them the choice to wear the designs they want, where they want.”
By Anne-Marie Randall
Having seen the product on Dragon’s Den, Costa del Sol resident Anne-Marie Randall, contacted Ally through the website to enquire if Clean Heels were just as effective on sand as on grass. “I couldn’t believe it when Ally herself actually called me back. We had a long conversation and agreed that the product would be great for Marbella’s glamorous women who were especially fed up with having to wear flip flops to prestigious events held at beach clubs. “I was very fortunate as Ally did not have any distributors in this area and, as we got on great, we decided to work together to bring the answer to every woman’s grass and beach shoe dilemma to the Costa del Sol.” Clean Heels Heel Stoppers are reusable and are available all along the Costa del Sol only from authorised stockists including (in the local area): Club Playa Real (Marbesa) The House Hairdressing (Elviria) Wags & Lads Boutique (Calahonda) Perfect Nails (Riviera) Matchroom Country Club (Mijas Golf) For information on your nearest stockist, or if you would like to become a stockist, please call +34 699 225 126, email clean.heels. spain@hotmail.com or go to our Facebook page Clean Heels Spain.

KEY HEALTH Swimmer’s Ear Summer is upon us and one of the most common complaints that we see during the holiday season is “ear ache”. One of the most common causes of ear ache or ear infections (swimmers ear) is poor swimming pool hygiene. Whilst the majority of pools will be well maintained, it’s the people who use them who are responsible for increasing the risks. All of the personal hygiene products that we use daily affect the chlorine and how well it works, so if you don’t shower before you swim you could be putting yourself or others at risk.. Swimmer’s ear, the facts: • Swimmer’s ear, or external otitis, is typically a bacterial infection of the outer ear canal skin and can occur in acute and chronic forms. • Excessive water exposure and frequent instrumentation (usually cotton swabs) of the ear canal are important causative factors. • Itchy ears, a feeling of fullness, swelling, drainage, and pain are early symptoms. • Antibiotic ear drops and avoidance of water are frequently necessary for treatment. • Proper ear care can avoid most infections. What is “swimmer’s ear” or acute external otitis? External otitis or “swimmer’s ear” is an infection of the skin covering the outer ear and ear canal. Acute external otitis is commonly a bacterial infection caused by streptococcus, staphylococcus, or pseudomonas types of bacteria. The swimmer’s ear infection is usually caused by excessive water exposure from swimming, diving, surfing, kayaking, or other water sports. When water collects in the ear canal (frequently trapped by wax), the skin can become soggy and serve as an inviting area for bacteria to grow. Cuts or abrasions in the lining of the ear canal (for example, from cotton swab injury) can also predispose to bacterial infection of the ear canal.
By Medicare What are the symptoms of swimmer’s ear? The first symptom of infection is that the ear will feel full, and it may itch. Next, the ear canal will swell and ear drainage will follow. At this stage the ear will be very painful, especially with movement of the outside portion of the ear. The ear canal can swell shut, and the side of the face can become swollen. Finally, the lymph nodes (glands) of the neck may enlarge, making it difficult or painful to open the jaw. People with swimmer’s ear may experience some temporary hearing loss in the affected ear. What is the treatment of swimmer’s ear? Regardless of the cause, moisture and irritation will prolong the course of the problem. For this reason, the ear should be kept dry. While showering or swimming use an ear plug (one that is designed to keep water out), or use cotton with Vaseline on the outside. Scratching the inside of the ear or using cotton swabs should be avoided. This will only aggravate the irritated skin, and in most situations will make the condition worse. In fact, scratching the inside of the ear will just make the ear itch more, and any medications prescribed will be ineffective. A hearing aid should be left out as much as possible until swelling and discharge stops. The most common treatment consists of ear drops containing antibiotics or antibiotics with corticosteroids to reduce inflammation. Oral antibiotics may also be required in some cases. These should be used as directed. In some situations, a “wick” will need to be placed in the ear canal to stent it open and serve as a conduit for the ear drops. Periodic, and sometimes frequent, suctioning of the ear canal helps to keep it open, remove debris, and decrease bacterial counts. KEY HEALTH What a Success – Diamond Microdermabrasion!
By Anne Stark
All my clients that have tried Diamond Microdermabrasion have come back for follow up treatments. It’s recommended that you have a weekly treatment for four weeks, and I tell you, you will notice a big difference! For those that need a deep-cleansing facial, microdermabrasion can be a part of the treatment. Exfoliation is one of the most important processes in your facial routine, either at home or as part of a professional treatment. Obviously after every treatment you have to be careful in the sun. I would also recommend that you check your home products for photosensitive ingredients to avoid pigmentation. ATACHE make great facial sun creams with colour, both 30 SPF and 50 SPF, so you no longer have to feel pale faced. Always remember that sun cream only goes on top of clean skin to avoid cross contamination. Summer is the time for special occasions – birthday parties, weddings or just gettogethers, so you will have a chance to look amazing. For this we can combine Genie lifting treatment together with Diamond Microdermabrasion, followed by Ultra Sound and finished off with a Collagen Mask. What a treatment – WOW!! Summer is finally here after the long, cool winter. We love to feel the warm air kissing our skin and we know that soon we will be enjoying everything to do with summer – red toe nails, new swimming gear, sun cream and the beach. The smell of sardines and children are enjoying swimming and ice creams – complete freedom and numerous late nights and of course families getting together, those memories that we will treasure. I hope you and yours are loving this beautiful time of year. Summer is also a time to treat yourself, whether it’s to get rid of hard skin or indulge in red toe nails, a relaxing massage or just getting rid of the pain in the neck. If you would like your face lifted or cleansed and treated with the latest technology and skill, I am sure you know where to come. Happy Holidays Anne

KEY HEALTH Sea Buckthorn Oil – Omega 7 What is Sea Buckthorn Oil? Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a berry bush found in Asia and Europe. The berry has been used in traditional Asian medicine for more than one thousand years. In the past few decades, scientist from the University of Turku, Finland have carried out extensive research into sea buckthorn which has resulted in an improved understanding of the health effects the berry has to offer. Sea buckthorn oil is rich in beta carotene, vitamins and omegas 3, 6, 7 & 9. Why take Omega 7(R)? Dry eyes? Dry mouth? Intimate dryness? Modern research has found that sea buckthorn oil is an important source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (particular omega 7). Polyunsaturated fatty acids are important structural components of mucous membranes, which form the protective lubricating lining of internal organs such as vaginal, digestive and respiratory tracts, as well as the surface of the eyes and mouth. Mucous membranes may become dry as a result of ageing or environmental factors. Sea buckthorn oil may therefore help to maintain healthy mucous membranes, as a source of nutrients required to maintain their structure and function. Linda loves Omega 7 “It has been life changing for me, I no longer need my eye drops and Omega 7 benefits so many other areas of the body that is a must in my daily routine” Q How did you discover Omega 7? A I wanted natural help for my dry eyes, which have plagued me for about 10 years. I was tired of using drops and feeling uncomfortable. I found out that other people with my problem us sea buckthorn oil to provide moisture from the inside. Q Tell us more about your problem. A My eyes felt dry and gritty most days, and also they would become red and sore. It would flare up when I was under artificial lighting, in air conditioned rooms or when I wore false eyelashes. It also seemed to worsen after I had my two children. I was forced to use eye drops every single morning. If I ever forgot my drops, my eyes would be terrible all day and people would think I’d been crying! Q How has Omega 7 helped you? A No more eye drops and no more discomfort! With the TV and photographic work I do, it’s important that my eyes look clear and healthy. Omega 7 has helped me achieve that.
By Anni’s Vital Shop
Q How long did it take to work for you? A I took two capsules in the morning and two at night and I started to see an improvement in a fortnight. After a few more weeks I was able to stop using my eye drops. Q Do you recommend it to others? A Absolutely! It has been life changing for me. Sea buckthorn benefits so many other areas of the body that it is now a must in my daily routine. Pharma Nord’s Omega 7 is made to such high standards that I know my health is in good hands. Linda Lusardi has been a household name in the UK for many years. She is a model, TV presenter and actress. Linda is married to actor Same Kane and has two children. 100% natural. Totally unique. KEY HEALTH Swollen Ankles?
By Patricia Kaines
Summer seems to have come early this year. We have been experiencing July temperatures in May. A lot of us suffer from water retention/oedema due to the heat – swollen ankles, fingers or puffiness of the body. In other words a general feeling of ‘heaviness’. Let me help you to relieve this discomfort with Manual Lymphatic Drainage. Manual Lymphatic Drainage, or MLD as it is often known as, is a very gentle, light touch massage that improves the effi-

ciency of the lymphatic system – the body’s waste disposal system. Specific and gentle movements of the skin stimulate and increase the rate of the removal of waste products, toxins and excess fluid from the body’s tissues, thus resulting in reduced fluid retention, swelling and puffiness of the ankles and elsewhere in the body. So, if you find that you are suffering this summer with excess fluid retention or would like to know more about the other benefits of MLD, give me a call at Clinica Medicare in La Cala on 952 835 776 or call me directly on 666 170 868.

KEY HOLISTIC Climb your Mountain One morning I received a call from a lady that spoke shakily through her tears, “Hello, is this Mark Bajerski?” “Yes it is,” I replied. “I’m not exactly sure why I’ve called,” she said. “I read about you in a magazine and felt I needed to call you.” I never push anyone into having a reading or a healing. I believe that choice must come from the person themselves and so I said to this lady, “If it feels right in your heart to come and see me, then my door will always be open to you.” Later that day, a lady with long, dark hair walked into my studio. As she sat down, she wiped her tear-stained eyes and I began to speak to her about her past. Before long, I was tuning into her partner. He had been a very warm and kind man when they first met. Sadly, over time, he had slowly turned into a darker side of himself. I was brought more deeply into this man’s life and into his energy and I could see his journey clearly; it had taken him to a dark place where he’d started hitting this lady and mentally abusing her. I shared with her some information she had not been aware of beforehand. It had been the cause of a great deal of pain for this man: information about his mother who had never shown him any love or attention and of his violent and abusive father, who only had two sides to him − silence or rage. No matter how much this man had tried, his father had never shown any feelings of pride towards his son, right up until he had passed away. This man had desperately wanted a mother and father who loved and supported him, and the fact that they were the complete opposite of that had been a cause of constant struggle and challenge. Unable to let go of the painful relationships he’d had with his parents, and not having sought any way to overcome the pain and anger, he could not face his demons. And because of this, he’d found himself in the same abusive cycle towards his partner as his father had been with him. As I continued I could see this lady’s energy change. It was a moment of divine enlightenment when all the terrible things that had happened to her partner finally made sense. She recognised that she had not been the cause of any of his pain and that he had not really intended to hurt her. With-
By Mark Bajerski in that moment, she was able to let go of all the questioning and years of guilt. One hour passed very quickly and the woman who had walked though my door was no longer in front of me. This was a new woman with a renewed inner power and selfconfidence. Her light was shining brightly and the final part of my work was about to begin − her healing. As she lay on my healing bed, I began by clearing the energy of her past, cutting cords and burning all the negative emotions from her mind and stomach. As I did so, she fell into a deep state of peace. When the healing ended, her eyes opened slowly, full of happiness and a new strength I had not seen there before. “Thank you, Mark,” she said. “While I was sleeping I felt a warmth and a trust that I’d be okay. I’m ready to face the world and more so, I know what it is I need to do!” “That’s wonderful,” I said, feeling much happiness for her. “I wish you well on the next part of your journey.” Some time later, she wrote a message from Italy saying she’d started the climb up her personal mountain. She was discovering a happiness she’d not experienced since she was a child. Her journey found her meeting amazing people who treated her with complete respect − something she had not felt for more than fifteen years. I gave thanks for the words Spirit had channelled through me that helped this lady begin her healing journey. Almost impossible to explain, one must be in the energy of Spirit’s intervention to truly understand and feel the confirmation that you are seeking. This energy manifests as a higher vibration felt deeply within the mind, body and soul. Everything comes together making complete sense. I’m reminded of a powerful phrase that helps me through my daily life: “No-one has the power over me.” Inner strength and bravery to face the challenges life throws at us, exists within each one of us. Spirit recognises your inner pain and gifts you healing love to move beyond it and the strength and power to reignite your inner flame.

KEY FEATURE Testimonials of the Intensive Training - Peter Hess-Sound Massage

I was on a high for days - I am sure you hear this often from your students but the course was amazing; I was on a high for days waking so early and more focused and connected. You were right when you said that my mission may be revealed through dreams, since returning from the course twice my dreams have depicted disabled children. Another thing I love about playing the bowls is that you, as the practitioner, also receive the benefits the healing sound promotes. I am continuing to love playing the bowls; they are so powerful each time I practice I learn something new about them. I have so enjoyed listening to your CD it is very beautiful it takes me right back to the course and helps me connect to the sound very quickly. Thank you for your help and support. A BIG Thank you - It was the only course I have ever attended that allowed me to not only learn the basics of a therapy (sound massage) but to have the opportunity to work with my inner self. An amazing course which provided a safe environment which was conducive to learning. A beautiful, life-enhancing course which was taught with passion and love from both Christine and Ingrid. I had a little knowledge of sound therapy both in theory and practice before attending the course; on completion I now feel the energy of sound within myself and feel totally connected. Great course, great tutors - can’t wait to start practicing; looking forward to the next course. A blissful experience - Christine Heckel is a wonderful teacher and passionately dedicated to spreading the goodness of the Tibetan singing bowls. She offers wonderfully tailored courses where one can learn in depth the wonderful art and therapeutic use of the Tibetan bowls and she also provides with her loving and compassionate presence, the sacred

space necessary to receive this beautiful teaching. With her, one feels at Home and in the hands of a professional and wonderful person. The Peter Hess intensive international training held in Spain in March 2014 has been a blissful experience, very rewarding in terms of the techniques and approaches learned, also the depth of the transmission and the love and care supporting the students along their personal path of transformation through the sound of the bowls and their powerful effects. I myself had the experience of a profound healing occurring within me and I felt totally supported by Christine’s expertise and warm heart. Christine provided a phenomenal translation from German into English, and was really careful to integrate all students from different linguistic backgrounds so they could all receive the best teaching possible. A real treat! This course is a wonderful experience of self healing and personal transformation and a teaching that will be a life-long gift for whomever wishes to embrace the gentle art of massage through the singing bowls. Thank you! Looking forward to the next level Participating in Christine’s Sound Massage class was pure joy. We had so much fun exploring the different sounds and healing properties of the Tibetan Singing Bowls. Spending 2 days completely immersed in sound was also a very profound healing experience for me which I am very grateful for. It’s now a month later and my cells are still vibrating. How does it get any better than this? The course was a great combination of theory and lots of practice. I am now very excited to start using Sound Massage in my practice. Thank you Christine I am looking forward to the next level.

KEY ASTROLOGY THE ASTROLOGY OF RELATIONSHIPS
By Janet Powell
The Elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) that are associated with each astrological sign provide a good reference for understanding how relationships are affected by both element and sign. Fire signs Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are the most active and motivated; earth signs Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are stable and dependable; air signs Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are quick thinkers and communicators; and water signs Cancer Scorpio and Pisces are sensitive and emotional. The question astrologers are often asked is whether two people involved in a relationship are compatible! This is a many-sided issue because while the beginning of a romance may seem like a bed of roses, a few months down the line it could turn into a bed of thorns! Oops! So what does an astrologer look for in the charts of two people to find areas of compatibility? Venus and Mars are the two planets often referred to as the ‘love birds’ of the Zodiac and the signs in which they fall in the birth charts of two people will say a lot about their relationship compatibility. Venus, in Roman mythology, was the Goddess of Love and astrologically she represents the way we see love and what we look for in love ... Mars was the Roman God of War, the masculine counterbalance to Venus. Fiery Mars, in contrast to Venus and emotional love, represents passionate love and whichever sign Mars falls in the birth chart denotes the personality traits and qualities that will ignite passion. For a woman the sign in which Mars falls in her birth chart represents the type of man she is most likely attracted to and for a man, the sign in which Venus falls in his birth chart represents the type of woman he is most likely attracted to. The Sun, Moon and Ascendant also play important roles in chart comparison and may be a determining factor in how well a relationship may or may not work out.
22
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
It’s often assumed earth signs are most compatible with other earth or water signs and vice versa and the same with air and fire signs, but if, for example, a Taurean (earth, stability) has Venus and Mars in Gemini (air, intellect) in their’ birth chart, they may well attract air sign partners with whom they can happily converse, at least for a while, and maybe a long time if there are other harmonious aspects between the two charts. The bottom line is that no one person can be all things to another or live up to expectations 100% of the time (or even 90%... who are we kidding!) Not one of us is perfect, which is just as well to remember when some minor irritation creeps in! Shared interests and common goals are important in maintaining a relationship at any age, and the truth is any two people can get along together if they both want to. What is essential is to follow your heart and enjoy the journey... there are many ways to measure compatibility but by far the most important is the way you feel in your heart. If you have any questions or comments about this article or astrology in general, send them in an email to Janet at astrology4everyone@yahoo.co.uk ... and, for anyone interested in attending an Astrology Workshop for Beginners, these will be starting up again in the Autumn, details on request. Until next time ... hasta luego :) x ... Janet x

KEY FEATURE An Extract from “A Soldier’s Wife” (James returns home from fighting in Flanders) James actually arrived home a few days earlier than Ellen had anticipated. She was scouring the granite front step when she looked up and saw a pair of boots on the pavement outside. She scrambled to her feet, almost knocking over the bucket of water. “Oh my God! James, is it really you?” “It is me all right, Ellen, my love.” He pulled her to him, hugging her fiercely. The familiar feel of him made her eyes fill up. She kissed him and pulled him into the hall. “How did you get here? Why didn’t you write to say you were coming earlier? ” “I just wanted to get home. I asked the doctor if I could be discharged a few days early. ” His eyes were still fixed on her as though he was afraid she would vanish. “Come inside, James and sit by the range. You must be tired and hungry after all that travel.” . His hand caressed her face. “I used to try to visualise your face every night. I tried to block the noise of the guns by imagining you singing to the children. I missed you all so much.” “We missed you too,” she said as she kissed away his tears. . Now, I must make you something to eat.” She took the chair opposite him while he ate. He looked different, older. His shoulders were drawn forward, as though to protect himself and he was very thin. His elegant moustache was gone and his hair was now grey. His light blue eyes were dead, as though they had seen too much. They both jumped as the door was thrown open. “Mother, do you know what happened in school today?” Harry and Joseph rushed into the kitchen to throw their schoolbags down. James stood up. “Harry, Joseph, I am so glad to see you!” Joseph threw himself into his father’s arms. “Papa! We thought you weren’t coming for another few days.” Harry stood back, his arms rigidly by his sides. “Welcome home, Father. “

James looked uncertainly at his eldest son and then proffered his hand. Harry took it without moving towards him so that they had to stretch towards each other. “You look well, son. You are taller than me now.” There was an awkward silence. Joseph broke it. “Are you all right now, Papa? Will you be staying at home now?” “Yes, Jo-Jo, I am much better, just a bit tired and I will be staying at home from now on,” James smiled at his youngest son. “There will be plenty of time to talk, boys. Papa is very tired. He needs to go for a rest now,” Ellen said, realising that James was white-faced and exhausted. She climbed the stairs after him... “Thanks, Ellen. I will be better when I have a sleep.” He sounded weary. She kissed him and closed the door quietly. While the children had their tea she took the opportunity to tidy herself . Soundlessly she climbed the stairs, changed her clothes, and brushed her hair. James was snoring gently in the other room. She looked in. He had taken one of the blankets off the bed and wrapped it around himself, even covering his head. She gently tugged at the blanket. There was a sudden movement and James was crouching on the bed with his back to the wall, a look of terror in his eyes. “It is all right, James. It is me, Ellen. I was just trying to make you more comfortable.” A look of recognition spread slowly over his face; he began to cry, great racking sobs. “I thought I dreamed it, you and the children. I thought I was back in the trenches. I covered my head because of the gas. I couldn’t breathe ...” Ellen reached for him and cradled his head on her breast. “It’s all right, my love. You are home now. I will take care of you. Let me take your boots off. Then, you can go back to sleep. ” Slowly, he lay down again and she managed to pull his boots off. She kissed him, feeling the salt tears still on his face and tucked him in, just as she would one of the children. Available from www.marionhreynolds.com or Amazon

KEY SPORTS 2015 World Snooker Championships Qualifiers Taking place at Ponds International Leisure Centre, Reanne Evans was beaten 10-8 by Ken Docherty. Pool player Chris ‘The Magician’ Melling had a go but was thrashed 10-1 by Li Hang. After thumping James Wattana 10-3 (winning 10 frames on the trot) and 7-2 up in the next round with Matthew Selt, things looked good for Jimmy White, absent from the tournament since 2006. But Selt pulled the match round winning 8 of the next 9 frames for a 10-8 victory. And just where were Ali Bassiri, Tony Knowles and David Singh this year? There was talk also of Dennis Taylor and Joe Johnson having a go, but this too did not materialise. Mark Selby was lucky to survive the first round with Kurt Maflin. Maflin 4-8 down, won 5 frames on the bounce and got in first in the decider, missing a straight red. Selby was able to edge over 10-9. Likewise, Stephen Maguire after being 5-9 down to Anthony McGill rallied to 9-9, only to lose the decider. ‘Ronnie’s the only one I’m really bothered about at the minute, let me know when he’s playing,’ remarked an observer. Let me entertain you! ‘This is as boring as hell with this pair,’ remarked an observer on the first round duel between Stuart Bingham and Robbie Williams. Graeme Dott awaited the winner. In Breach of the Rules Ronnie O Sullivan took his shoes off and played in his socks during the 6th frame of his match with Craig Steadman. When the frame (won by Steadman) was finished, he swapped them for another pair. The shoes looked suspiciously like Azors, needed a polish and belonged to the tournament official Mike Ganley. There were more pots missed than you’ve had hot dinners in the 7th frame between Mark Williams and Matthew Stevens (which Stevens won 82-71), not to mention fouls and in-offs. The last throw of the dice ‘It’s the last throw of the dice,’ quipped commentator John Virgo, a tad melodramatically perhaps: as if Williams was 2-9 down and on the verge of going out when in fact, he was only 2-6 down. Matthew Stevens was impressive in his 10-2 win, playing arguably the best snooker of the first round and it set up an interesting second round clash with O’ Sullivan. In 1981 the first round losers walked away with £875. In 2015 they pocketed 12 grand! Smelling blood Mark Selby was 6-10 and 7-12 down to Anthony Magill. Selby scraped the next, then knocked in a century but a very neat pink by Magill when on 63 cannoned 3 reds and he knocked in an 82 break to clinch the match 13-9. Ali Carter v Neil Robertson looked a tough match on paper, Ding came from 1-5 behind to beat John Higgins 13-9. A mad fluke by Judd Trump in frame 14 of his second round match with Marco Fu, the ball jawing in three pockets bouncing up and down the table before dropping in the bottom left corner pocket, the rub of the green for attacking play and aggressive potting. ‘Missing two blacks off the spot in one frame is unforgivable’ – Stephen Hendry Matthew Stevens started brightly in his match with O‘Sullivan but faded and was beaten 13-5. None of the second round matches were really close, several of them were 13-4 and 13-5. The highlight quarter final was a very nip and tuck affair, no quarter given: Barry Hawkins edging Neil Robertson 13-12. The much im-

proved Anthony McGill followed up his UK Championship quarter final with a quarter final run here before succumbing to Shaun Murphy by 13 frames to 9. Ronnie O’Sullivan looked out of sorts going down 9-13 to Stuart Bingham. In the fifth frame he had placed a piece of chalk on the table to line a shot up – in breach of the rules but not surprisingly questioned by the referee or by Bingham. Bingham missed a few pots but scored heavily too while The Rocket was missing straight blacks. All the dynamics seemed to go out of his game in the final few frames. ‘You do well to beat Ronnie even on an off-day,’ remarked an observer. Judd Trump meanwhile cruised into the semi-finals with a 13-4 demolition of Ding Jung Hui and there he met Stuart Bingham. Bingham knocked in 65 to pinch the second frame after a Trump red jawed on 63. A tremendous Bingham blue top spinning the cue-ball off three cushions during an 89 break which made it 2-2. Trump potted a smart blue later in the match, applying loads of side to send it round the baulk colours, knocking a red off the cushion. However, he still finished the closing session 7-9 down. ‘I want my hair like Stuart Bingham,’ remarked an observer. I’m going to ask the barber to do it like the ball runner’s next time I go in.’ Trump missed a careless pink thinking more about getting into position for the next red and a frame ball red into the middle pocket. Bingham knocked in a century break to move within a frame of victory at 16-14. Back to the wall Trump responded with a 114 break and 129 to level the match at 16-16. In the decider, the players had several exchanges but no big breaks. A finely cut yellow and a fantastic planted red along the bottom rail helped Stuart Bingham win the frame and match 17-16 and move into the final to play Shaun Murphy who had defeated Barry Hawkins in the other semi 17-9. Ballrun Bonanza! So tenth ranked Stuart Bingham, on his ninth appearance at the tournament since 2000 made his first final. Murphy knocked in a beautiful long blue in with side and took an early lead. Bingham sped his play up and made a century in the fourteenth frame, followed by an 89 in the next to close the gap to 7-8. At the halfway interval Bingham was down 8-9. ‘A Bingham resurgence, never seen him play so well,’ remarked an observer. Bingham got as far as 3 frames ahead but Murphy pulled back to 15-15. Murphy’s failure to escape from a snooker 8 times was instrumental in Bingham winning the next frame. A virtual frame ball was missed by Bingham in the next but he managed to clinch it. A red wobbled in the jaws but went in and Stuart Bingham made an 88 break to clinch the match 18-15 and become World Champion – after 20 years of trying. ‘WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!’ - S. BINGHAM 2015 WORLD SNOOKER CHAMPION Terry Griffiths received standing ovations for 2 x 73 breaks in the 1979 tournament. Quinten Hann arrived at the qualifiers of the 2000 World Championships in Newport with a pair of grey combat trousers which did not conform to the WPBSA’s dress code. He was informed that unless he bought a pair of proper trousers he would be scratched from the tournament. Hann went to a nearby Marks and Spencers and bought a pair of black trousers. He played in them with the labels still attached before giving them to a girl he had met to return and get his money back.

KEY FEATURE Staying Safe Online
By Fiona Catchpowle, Social Media Ninja - #CyberGran
Many online activities are perfectly safe and beneficial to our lives. As adults we are able to make more informed decisions about what is safe to do online and what is likely to put ourselves at risk. However children do need more advice and guidance on how to be responsible Cyber Citizens, so here are a few tips you may want to take on board and share with the younger people in your life: 1) Don’t post any personal information online – like your address, email address or mobile number. 2) Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself. Once you’ve put a picture of yourself online, most people can see it and may be able to download it; it’s not just yours anymore. 3) Keep your privacy settings as high as possible. 4) Never give out your passwords.

5) Don’t befriend people you don’t know. 6) Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online. Speak to your parent or carer about people suggesting you do. 7) Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are. 8) Think carefully about what you say before you post something online. 9) Respect other people’s views; even if you don’t agree with someone else’s views, it doesn’t mean you need to be rude. 10) If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried: leave the website, turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately. Nature’s Secrets RUS
By Joanna the Dog Groomer
Joanna the dog groomer and her family are excited to be adding new products to their range all the time. Spanning over 20 years, Joanna has always had a passion for everything natural and chemical free. A qualified dog groomer and dietician for over 20 years, I see so many ongoing health issues in dogs - ear infections, dry, itchy skin, constant licking and chewing of paws to name but a few. Even with good veterinarian treatment, problems are ongoing with flare ups causing the cycle to start again. My treatment plans work on dealing with the root cause using natural organic products used topically and internally to deal with the issue at its root cause. Wonderful home-made dog biscuits that are wheat and gluten free without any additives of any kind packed with natural ingredients, as well as body sprays, lotions, balms, home-made infusion oils to be added to your dog’s food and a huge range of grooming oils including coconut oil, Neem and Argan oil, wheat germ, almond oil. Like our home-made chemical free flea/tick/mozzie lotion/spray and grooming oil, both products totally chemical free without alcohol, safe for your dog to lick and safe for the whole family. In fact, used together, they offer wonderful protection against most of the biting insects. Colloidal liquid silver is doing what we know it does, changing homes. A product we are very proud to produce, it makes a wonderful cooling mist spray for dogs which is safe and can be used even on open wounds and burns. It’s soothing and healing and

Myself and my good friend, Lesley Harris, rescued a litter of new born puppies found tied up in thick plastic sacks and tossed into rubbish bins. Now nearly six weeks old, we still need to find a loving home for one of them - a beautiful, calm and loving little girl who will soon be missing her litter mates when they go to their new homes next week. Can you offer her a loving home? If not, please share her story. Both myself and Lesley have hand reared these puppies and they are just so good and well behaved, used to family life, other dogs and children. She would make a wonderful addition to any family. The other puppies in the photos are all with a wonderful lady called Mary Locke Burgess - all in need of loving homes. Mary has dedicated her life to rescuing dogs here in Spain and has dogs of all ages, breeds and sizes in need of loving homes but she is desperate to secure homes for theses puppies as she has had little response to them so please look her up - ONE STEP CLOSER TO HOME or call her on 610 725 422. KEY LAW Data Protection
By Victoria Anzola, Iberdata 21 S.L.
Service contracts need to include specific clauses of consent covering how your Company might want to use your Client’s personal data. The Spanish Data Protection (LOPD) and Internet (LSSICE) laws require that, when sending out commercial communications (e.g. advertisements): • The intended recipients must have given their prior consent to being sent such material. • Such consent must be based on clear and unambiguous information on how the recipient’s personal data may be used by the company. • The intended recipients of the communication must be given the option to withdraw or refuse their consent. A recent example of failure to follow these requirements resulted in a fine of 5,000 euros for a Veterinary Hospital, imposed by the Spanish Agency for Data protection (AEPD). Note that this was judged to be a mild breach of the regulations. The Case: The complainant received an SMS on his phone issued by the Hospital offering products and services of other companies in the industry, without being offered any means of opposition
40

to such advertising. Furthermore, the complainant said he had not given consent to receiving commercial communications by electronic means. In its defence, the Hospital claimed that the telephone number data was provided by the complainant in a contract for its veterinary services. However, the AEPD noted that the contract between the complainant and the Hospital was limited to “reminders through phone calls of all your pet’s health needs”. The contract stated nothing about receiving commercial information on third party products. Article 21 of the LSSI prohibits such communications if there is no consent, except where the data used are from a prior business relationship and the communication is related to products or services of the same company. Given the contractual relationship between the complainant and the Hospital, the aspect of the promotion of third party products was dismissed. However, the AEPD established that the Hospital sent four SMS communications to promote products and services without obtaining the express prior consent of the sender, nor did they offer any simple means for the complainant to exercise his ARCO rights (i.e. rights of Access, Rectification, Cancellation, and Opposition). It was on this basis that the Hospital was fined.

KEY FEATURE Hot Summer Nights in Mijas Pueblo For those who like their music live and out of doors, a series of concerts has been organised in Mijas Pueblo this summer and offers something for all tastes, ranging from the music of the Eagles to Bon Jovi and Big Band swing to Classic Rock. Following successful live music events in in the atmospheric Mijas Auditorium last year, the “Hot Summer Nights” season for 2015 offers a diverse range of music shows which will be held in June and August. The first two concerts are in June and feature: • Thursday June 25th – Swing Night Big Band: The Andy Peacock Big Band play both old and modern Jazz and Swing; 2 hours of unforgettable music from Glenn Miller to Michael Bublé
By Big M Promotions
says, “Last summer, we put on an open air concert in the Mijas auditorium, featuring two local musicians who had a superb “Tribute to Pink Floyd” show that had been doing small shows along the Costa del Sol. The concert was a complete sell-out days before the date, and over 900 people enjoyed the warm night, sipping cold beer and watching a fantastic concert and lightshow.” Following on from this successful event, Martyn went on to put on another totally different concert last summer, this time with the music of “The 3 Tenors”, “Broadway” and “West End” musicals. The Mijas auditorium was transformed into an “opera house” under the stars, and again sold out!
• Friday June 26th – Top “Bruce Springsteen Tribute” artist George Mileson and his 9-piece band playing two hours of the best of “The Boss”, plus supporting group Stereo 80
Those who have not ventured all the way through Mijas Pueblo and up to the “Jardines de la Muralla” are missing a beautiful, shaded plaza bordered by the Plaza de Toros, the Imaculada de la Concepcion church and of course the municipal auditorium.
Then the season continues into August with the following: • Thursday August 6th – The premier Bon Jovi Tribute band from the UK, “Bon Giovi” perform all the favourite hits of “Bon Jovi”, plus support band
Tranquil during the day in the welcome shade, on concert nights this plaza buzzes with atmosphere, coloured lights illuminating the trees and even the fountains have their own colourful display.
• Friday August 7th – An evening dedicated to the legendary “Eagles” with the first concert in Spain of the band “Desperados”, plus support band
All concerts in the Hot Summer Nights season have numbered seating in 8 areas, all of which have good views to the stage as the Mijas Auditorium is an intimate venue, and acoustically great.
• Saturday August 8th – A night of Classic Rock, 3 bands on stage, featuring the return of the “Pink Floyd” tribute from 2014, a “Deep Purple” tribute band from the UK ‘Deeper Purple’, and 80s covers band “Stereo 80”. Over 4 hours of the very best Classic Rock!
Online ticket sales agents in Mijas Costa (full choice of seats): Sunshine Golf Store, La Cala de Mijas Ticket sales agents (limited choice of seats); Yorkshire Linen Warehouse “Beds and More”, Mijas Costa
Doors open at 20.30h and all concerts will start at 21.30h. There will be 2 bars (one bar exclusively for beer), an American-style Hog Roast and BBQ, and Mojito Cocktails. Like last year’s events, these concerts are organised by Big M Promotions, who have been putting on concerts and events since the late 70s in the UK and since 2008 in Spain. KEY FEATURE Male Body Service Manual purchases and drinks/food are cash only. There are “ATM Cashpoints” at various places in Mijas Village. As Mijas has a NO PARKING policy for non-residents of the pueblo, visitors’ cars must be parked in the multi-story car park by the Town Hall. There is a charge of 1 Euro to park all day. If you park in the village centre, your car will get a fine and may be towed away. The walk through Mijas Village is lovely on a summers evening, and we highly recommend that you arrive in plenty of time to park, walk or take a taxi up to the auditorium.
Editor’s note: I had the pleasure of attending the Pink Floyd tribute last summer – a magical event in a stunning venue with the best acoustics. As parking is only 1 Euro for 24 hours, why not make a day of visiting the lovely village of Mijas – there is so much to see and do from a visit to CAC Mijas - The Centre for Contemporary Art which has more than 400 works of leading artists such as Pablo Ruiz Picasso and Salvador Dali - visit www.mijas.es for more information or for something completely different - a sightseeing tour by electronic Tuk Tuk – www.tuktukspain.es.

KEY FEATURE RAFA Needs You!
By RAFA
The Costa del Sol Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association, RAFA, was formed in 2013 following a merger between Benalmadena and Gibraltar and covers an area from the Campo de Gibraltar in the west to east of Malaga and about 80 km inland. They provide welfare assistance to ex-RAF members and their families. Since 2006 an average of over 40,000 Euros each year has been dispensed to needy cases. Each year around 3,000 short breaks are taken at the RAFA Respite Care Homes. These are jointly funded with the RAF Benevolent Fund and are situated in Weston-Super-Mare, Lytham St Annes and Northumberland and provide much needed care and support to serving and ex-RAF personnel and their families. The Welfare Team are involved in many cases where ex-RAF personnel or their families require help with respite, care, financial assistance or simply the use of mobility aids.
RAFA is also a membership organisation, open to ex-RAF (Full Members) and members of the general public who wish to support our aims (Associate Members). Membership offers a wide range of benefits for serving or former RAF personnel. Welfare help is not dependent on being a member of RAFA. Assistance is available to any qualifying RAF or ex-RAF person and his/her dependents. Being a member helps in keeping in touch and goes towards funding the many cases handled each year. In order to provide the welfare help and support, each RAFA branch has a programme of social events throughout the year. Just one of the events this year will be a Dinner Dance in September to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the ‘Battle of Britain’. Your local Branch meets twice a month: 1st Monday at the Tamisa Golf Hotel at 13.00. 3rd Monday at the El Jardin Bar, Arroyo de la Miel at 14.00.

MIJAS ART CENTER/ CENTRO DE ARTES DE MIJAS
was established in 1972 by two American ladies to give the Mijas children the opportunity to explore their artistic abilities. Set up as a charity with donations, the Art Centre studio is situated in the heart of the village overlooking the Plaza de la Peña. Luella, the children’s teacher, was a much loved personality, still talked about by those who attended her popular class. Today Nancy Holt runs a great class with some very talented children. To enable us to keep going, as in the past, we offer adult classes in a range of subjects that include art, craft, sculpture, photography and Spanish to raise the much-needed funds to keep us open. We are always on the lookout for teachers with new talents and of course more students. Every year the Town Hall has an exhibition of our work. We have taken a stand at the Mijas artisan market, held every Wednesday in Plaza de la Peña, selling works by teachers and students. We organise competitions too our latest is for children of the community to design a T-shirt with the Mijas logo, a donkey and an easel. The three winners will get a T-shirt and tickets to the Aqua Park. The T-shirts will be sold to benefit the Art Centre. For more information call Caroline on 653 916 688 or email spiritualspain@hotmail.com. Please see advertisement on page 23.
MUSIC OF THE NIGHT
Talk of the Town – ´Music of the Night´ returns to Marbella. The hit show “Music of the Night” returned to Marbella recently with another astounding show, and has fast become the talk of the town. The 2-hour show was literally filled non-stop with boundless energy and superb performances of songs from the very best of West End and Broadway musicals, as well as some of the most well-known classical arias. Starring and produced by Tenor, Stephen Lloyd-Morgan, the show took us through a journey of the best of musical theatre, and included songs from Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, Children of Eden and Hair, through to Evita, Rent and Phantom of the Opera, culminating in an up-tempo finale with songs from Grease, Sister Act and Mamma Mia! Starring alongside Stephen, there were fantastic performances from the amazing Adele Lee Peters, Raul D´Abreu, Lucy Indrisie and Julie-Anne Hunter. It was of little surprise they were rewarded with several standing ovations throughout and at the end of the show. Music of the Night has most certainly brought the heart of the West End and Broadway to the centre of Marbella and the Costa del Sol and we are very fortunate to have this show on our door-steps. This exclusive season of shows continues at the H10 Andalucia Plaza Hotel, Marbella on 10th July, followed by 31st July, 21st August and 12th September. Tickets on sale now at www.motn2015.
