KEY BEAUTY What Colour?

By Tracy, Hair Magic

If you have never coloured your hair and want to, it’s not a good idea to use a permanent one. Always try with semi permanent as if you don’t like the colour, it will wash out after 6 shampoos. There are many ways to colour your hair, highlights and low lights – these are great if you don’t want to colour your hair too often. Because not all the hair is coloured, so the regrowth does not show. The down side is if you have a lot of grey hair, it will still show. This brings us to permanent colour. Well, the possibilities are endless. There is so much we can do with colour now. ALWAYS ask for professional advice – it is so easy to make the mistake of buying the wrong colour. Consultations at HAIR MAGIC are free, so give us a call. If you don’t want to use any chemicals on your hair, EXTENSIONS are another option. We can give you a highlighted effect or low lighted effect using extensions to colour hair and it will also give it a fuller look.

KEY BEAUTY Education! Education! Education! September saw the start of our 9th year with graduation day and new students starting their Marbella Beauty Academy adventure. Well done everyone! Good luck in the future! We love what we do, and get very attached to the students we train; our satisfaction comes from employers requesting MBA therapists from all parts of the globe. This could be you! Are you are a school leaver? A mum who finally has time on her hands to do something for herself? Or are you looking for a career change? Be careful to choose the right course...........what questions should you ask when choosing a course? 1. Is the training establishment accredited to give you a recognised and legal qualification? This is important when you apply for a job and, most HR departments have a qualification criteria to meet; you will not get an interview without the correct certificate. 2. Accreditation means the school has been accepted by an educational body who govern and oversee the standards taught, and monitor and check on a regular basis, offering

legal qualifications. 3. QCF stands for the qualification and credit framework which are regulated by Ofqual, England’s regulator. It is based on credits which can be transferred for further studies. 4. Check qualifications required for your dream job. Legislation is tightening and you cannot be fully insured without a recognised certificate. 5. Check the pass rate and results achieved by previous students. 6. Ask for testimonials from old students and information on the careers they have now. 7. Staff qualifications and experience - do the staff remain constant, do they all have full qualifications in the subject they deliver including for teaching? 8. How many students are in a class? How much equipment is available? 9. Remember! No official accreditation... no measure of standards. Telephone the examining board and check they really do have it.

KEY FEATURE All the fun of the (Christmas) Fayres Christmas is on its way to the Costa del Sol and traditionally that means lots of fayres, markets and events where you can ‘show and tell’ your product or service. Here are my top 10 tips for making the events worthwhile:1. Where possible speak to other people who have exhibited in previous years to find out how popular the events are. 2. Start with the end in sight - have a financial goal; how much you want to earn at the event (taking into account the costs of attending), including any new business and new customers? 3. If you want to attend a few markets and fayres, but money is tight, why not partner with another business that provides a complimentary product or service? 4. Advertising is the key; make sure you use Facebook and your database of existing clients to invite people to your stand. You can create your own event on your Facebook business page easily – ask the organisers to share the image with you for the event. There are lots of local Facebook pages which allow you to post events (always check the pinned post on any page to check their rules before posting). 5. If you don’t have a database of people to invite, now is a time to start. I use streak.com which is a free CRM/Sales tool linking to Gmail. Run a competition at the event in exchange for new

10

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Ali Meehan, Costa Women

and existing clients’ names and email addresses to send out offers, competitions and newsletters for the future. 6. Make sure you have business cards, flyers and information ready well in advance of the event. 7. On the day, make your stand look as interesting, clutter-free and attractive as possible. There is nothing worse that seeing a thrown-together stand. Use all the senses; aromas, something for people to taste, listen to, watch and feel. Have themed product displays using different colours and elements from nature to highlight your products and services. 8. Run a special offer, 2 for 1, or create a discount card which your new customers can use when they want to buy products or services from you in the future 9. SMILE! Having attended 100s of events over the years, there is nothing worse than the stand-holder sitting, using their phone and not appearing to be interested in my custom. Engage with people – don’t immediately ask “How can I help you”, but make small talk. There is no rush to sell anyone anything. Create a friendly environment first. 10. Rinse and repeat. If you are doing more than one event, spend some time thinking about what worked and what didn’t and make changes for your next event. I look forward to meeting you at the Fayres!

KEY HEALTH Skin Care

By Anne Stark at Images

Our skin is the biggest organ in our body so it is vital to look after it properly. Environmental factors such as the sun is the most damaging to the skin; the right care and sensible sunbathing will actually help you to produce the important D vitamin necessary for bodily functions. Cells renew every 28 days and this is why many people have monthly facials. In the long run, it pays to use the right skin care and visit your facialist regularly to obtain the best results. Skin care should start with cleansing and end with moisturiser and everything in between should have beneficial ingredients to uplift the quality of your skin. It is important to know your own skin type. There is no sense to buy a cleanser for greasy skin if your skin type is something else. Always consult a professional for the best advice. I myself always use machines for facials. Even people with a pacemaker can have Diamond Micro-dermabrasion for best results. Yes, we all have wonderful hands and can work miracles with them but the frequency used in machinery, together with the correct products, will penetrate to the deeper layers. Some years ago I did a course in Japanese Lifting facials. The skilful hands of the therapist, together with the right products will lift the face. If we make a half-face test, the results are amazing. If we compare this treatment to Genie Take 10, you will see the real difference. People with Bells Palsy are the proof of Genie power and lasting results – see page 11. Which treatment is nicer to receive? Probably the Japanese Lifting, but I hope you are not fooled by imitations because there is nothing so powerful as Genie Take 10. I know because I have tested and compared both these treatments. I welcome you to sample my Get Results facials. I hope you find them excellent as so many others do and I’ll do my best to improve on them even more with new products and machinery so you can experience the pleasure of receiving a facial. Best Regards Anne

KEY HEALTH Prevention Can Save Your Life The breasts are the symbol of a woman’s femininity, a crucial part of her sexuality and a bond between mother and child during maternity. But breasts are also the female organs that generate the highest incidence of cancer among women. Hence our interest in making it widely known that early detection is the only way to achieve the highest number of cures using the least aggressive treatments. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. The lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is one in nine and in the UK, 41,000 new cases are diagnosed each year (1% of cases occurring in men). The risk of breast cancer is increased in some patients if there is a family history (particularly on the maternal side). The risk of breast cancer increases with age and 80% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50. Current data indicate that survival rates from breast cancer are improving. The key factors for this improvement are increased breast awareness and early detection and presentation of breast cancer. The mammogram is undoubtedly the most effective method of cancer screening (the method used for early detection of the disease). It can detect 35% to 45% of tumours smaller than 1 cm, when we cannot yet feel them. However, this test is less

Provided by Medilink

sensitive on women younger than 40 due to the higher density of the breast tissue at a younger age. Therefore, it is important that women under 40 assess their family-related risks. For example, whether they have any direct relatives with breast cancer in the family or whether they have ever had a breast disease, to ascertain which check-ups are needed. In these cases, a complementary ultrasound can diagnose small hidden abnormalities that the mammogram is unable to detect. And we must not forget the importance of breast self-examination. All women should be familiar with their own breasts and the changes that occur during the monthly cycle, so they can make an appointment with a specialist if they detect anything unusual. Finally, a clinical breast examination should be part of an annual gynaecological check-up, together with the smear test. Non-aggressive and cost-effective methods are available today for the early diagnosis of breast diseases. Don’t forget that prevention starts with you! Dra Angela Escobar Casas is a Preferred Partner of “medilink” a Gynaecologist and breast specialist. For more information on Dra Escobar or any of our other Preferred Partners call “medilink” on 952 93 38 76.

KEY HEALTH All on FOUR . . .

By Belinda Pamos, Sonrisa

Patients often ask me… how many implants do I need to have all lower or upper teeth in a fixed way? Today I will explain to you one of the techniques using less implants that can be used and its benefits: “All on Four “ Rapid improvement in quality of life The All-on-4® treatment concept provides edentulous and soon-to-be edentulous patients with a fixed, fullarch prosthesis on four implants on the day of surgery. This quickly leads to improved patient satisfaction – with regards to function, aesthetics, sense, speech, and self-esteem. Shorter treatment times Two key elements significantly reduce treatment complexity,

14

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

the number of surgeries, and the overall treatment time: tilting of the posterior implants avoids the need for time-consuming bone grafting procedures, while immediate loading shortens time to teeth. Lower costs The All-on-4® treatment concept is not only the least timeconsuming treatment option, but also the least costly in comparison with conventional implant treatment modalities of the edentulous and soon-to-be edentulous jaw. Stability even in minimum bone volume By tilting the two posterior implants, longer implants can be used. This increases bone-to-implant contact and avoids vertical bone augmentation. In addition, the tilted implants can be anchored in better quality anterior bone, reduce cantilevers and help avoid important anatomical structures.

KEY HEALTH What is Q10? Q10 is a key coenzyme found in every cell of our body. It is involved primarily in energy production and may help to promote optimal heart function, blood pressure levels and boost your immune system. Small amounts of Q10 can be found in sardines, mackerel, pork, spinach, soya oil, sesame seeds and walnuts. The amount of Q10 in our body declines with age and lifestyle, so it may help to supplement your Q10 to ensure an adequate level. Why take coenzyme Q10? • For a healthy heart • To increase cellular energy production • Provide support for Statin users • As a powerful antioxidant • For healthy gums Bio-Quinone Q10 ® (Ubiquinone) Bio-Quinone Q10 ® contains the regular form of coenzyme Q10 – ubiquinone. For more than 20 years Pharma Nord has used Kaneke Q10™ in their products. Kaneke Q10™ is the most thoroughly tested, widely trusted and highest quality CoQ10 in the world. Pharma Nord’s Bio-Quinone Q10® Gold is the reference product for the International Coenzyme Q10 Association. Bio-Quinone Q10 ® is a market leader amongst conventional Q10 products. Its oil-based formulation promotes well documented optimum absorption. Natural Q10 levels decrease with age, and are also depleted by intense physical exercise, illness, or in patients taking Statin drugs. You will feel an effect within a month: Many people take coenzyme Q10 as an ordinary dietary supplement. If you are deficient in coenzyme Q10, the benefits of taking a supplement will become apparent to you within a month, depending on how much you take. What Can Q10 do? HEART FUNCTION – Q10 is particularly important to help maintain the efficient functioning of the heart. ENERGY – Coenzyme Q10 is found in the mitochondria (energy factor) of each cell and is involved in the Electron Transfer Chain – a process by which our food is turned into energy. Its role is similar to that of a spark plug in a car engine. Just as the car cannot function without that initial spark, the human body cannot function without coenzyme Q10. However, mitochondria are not always able to function optimally to produce energy. One factor which may be responsible is lack of Q10. This can cause tiredness and lack of sleep. Elderly people, in particular, are advised to supplement as levels of Q10 decline with age. IMMUNE SYSTEM – Q10 also has antioxidant properties protecting cells from free radical damage. (Free radicals are chemicals that are created by our own metabolism as well as from environmental factors such as smoking, air pollution, UV light exposure etc). HEALTHY GUMS – The concentration of Q10 in the gums has been shown to be lower in people with periodontitis (gum disease) or whenever there is a risk of infected or bleeding gums. Supplementation with Q10 may help reduce the numbers of unhealthy micro-

organisms in the mouth as well as raise levels of Q10. Q10 also comes in toothpaste form to target gums specifically. Why choose Pharma Nord Q10? • Reference product for the International Coenzyme Q10 Association • Tested in more than 70 studies • Manufactured to pharmaceutical standards • Patented oil-based preparation for maximum absorption • Presented in soft gelatine lightproof capsules • Blister packed, no exposure to atmosphere. Q10 and Statins – Statins are cholesterol lowering drugs, some of which are now available without prescription. Statins can be very effective medication, by blocking the body’s ability to make LDL (bad) cholesterol but, at the same time, they disrupt the body’s production of coenzyme Q10. Dr Chris Steele MBE says: “Lots of people take Statins to control cholesterol, but they can drain you of Q10, which is needed by every cell in the body to produce energy. If you’re complaining of tiredness, you may need a Q10 supplement”. See advertisement below for special offer at Anni’s Vital shop for Q10.

KEY HOLISTIC Vida Natural Skincare Due to the adverse effects of some chemicals used in the manufacture of everyday beauty products, many more people are actively sourcing good-quality natural products which do not contain these chemicals which have been tried and tested, are priced sensibly and also look and smell good too! Jill Burgess, owner of Vida Natural Skincare, is originally from London but now lives in the beautiful Andalucian countryside with her husband and 2 teenage children. She became interested in alternative medicine and natural therapies from a young age, and throughout her teenage years and early 20’s was always trying age-old remedies and almost always found great results. As time went on her energies were focused on family life, but she constantly found that traditional remedies became more and more useful, especially having children. After finding it difficult to source genuine natural soaps, creams and body care, she

KEY HOLISTIC A Holistic Approach to Hormone Balance Welcome to the Women Wellness Guide. The autumn is here and the weather is just super at this time of the year. Ladies who suffer with hot flushes and night sweats will be pleased and relieved. If you are using ProgesterAll balancing cream, you may now be able to lower your dose during the daytime. Xenoestrogens – what are they? Today hormones can be unbalanced very quickly and simply by using products that our body does not recognize and rejects, but we don´t know it. Such things are fabric softener, margarine, hair conditioner which are derived from petrochemicals; the commercial outlets have no interest in our health, they only want to sell us what looks good in a pretty package and has a pleasant perfume. So what can you do about this? Softener in clothes is fine for jumpers, trousers, skirts, shirts and towels, but for underwear, this should be washed by hand in a baby washing liquid. If you are using ProgesterAll Natural Progesterone Balancing Cream, it’s extremely important to use natural products and avoid Xenoestrogens as and where possible; this helps the function of the balancing cream, and keeps it active in your body for a longer period of time. Personal Hygiene – When you shower or bathe, try to use products that do not contain Sodium Laureth Sulfate. This is a petrochemical that is used to break down grease on garage floors, so do you really want to shower or bathe in it? Nahrin Swiss is a company that provides high quality natural products that are suitable for people with hormone balance symptoms and have or have had cancer of any kind. Harmony – a specially developed capsule for psychological changes and hormone imbalance, and pre menstrual ups and downs of menopause. This product is exclusive to Nahrin and available on our website as well as other products, such as: Aloe Vera and Tea Tree products, Shower Gels, bath gels for fibromyalgia, Non Aluminum Deodorant, Shampoo, Conditioner, Face cream, Body Lotions, Vitamins and minerals in capsule form or syrups, family vitamins, mouth wash, soups, herbal teas and sun screen products without chemicals. There is also a wide range of Essential oils, carrier oils, carefully developed make up, not forgetting legs and feet, intimate wash, universal household clean and much more.

KEY HOLISTIC Spirit’s Messenger

By Mark Bajerski

Not so long ago, I was going through a pretty challenging week. I received news that my part in a project - which I’d really been looking forward to - had been cancelled, as it had changed direction. My particular input to the project apparently, no longer fitted in. I was feeling quite sad over this turn of events, and to help shift this mood, I headed out for a walk with my dogs to try and clear my mind. Sadly, it wasn’t working and I continued to feel very low. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the largest praying mantis I have ever seen appeared. It flew straight towards me and landed on my shoulder. I nearly jumped out of my skin, terrified that it was going to take a good bite out of me! With my heart thumping, I plucked up the courage and shook my body vigorously to try to get it off me. As soon as it took flight, I did too and ran downhill like the wind. A bit further on, I had to slow down as I was laughing uncontrollably over my pretty silly reaction. My laughter felt like such a release from the heavy mood I’d been in. I imagined how funny I must look; a grown man running crazily away from a ‘deadly’ praying mantis. I thought I’d share the hilarity of the moment worth, took out my phone and posted a funny update about the ‘dangers and perils’ of living in the mountains of Spain. It was all fun and light-hearted. Being part of nature is vital to me; it is where I see and feel so many signs of Spirit, but I did think a praying mantis perched on my shoulder was taking my closeness to nature a tad too far. I enjoyed typing up my story, finishing with, ‘Spirit, next time you’re going to send me a little companion might it be a gentle butterfly maybe?!’ Before long, a comment popped up on my post. A friend had written, “Mark, you know there is a very spiritual significance to the praying mantis?” “You’re kidding me!” I replied. “Not kidding, Mark,” my friend replied. “Wow, please explain” I answered, excited to learn more. My friend continued, “The praying mantis comes as a messenger from Spirit, at a time when we need peace and calm in our lives - to have us step back from a moment of challenge”

“Wow, isn’t that something?” I replied smiling to myself. Amazed by this information, I decided to look more into the meaning of the praying mantis. Ancient text tells us that “Mantis” is the Greek word for “prophet” or ‘seer,’ a being with spiritual or mystical powers – a sign to take time out to meditate and for deep contemplation. Wow. It suddenly all made sense to me. A quotation from a friend sprang to mind: ‘Often what we see as ‘rejection’ is, in reality, Spirit’s protection.’ During those troubled moments on my walk, where I was full of selfdoubt and disappointment, Spirit’s messenger came and rested on my shoulder. The revelation about the praying mantis helped me shift my mood, overcome my self-doubt and the message was now as clear as day. I could appreciate that not all projects would be right for me and of course I could still share my message regardless. In my heart, my light shines so brightly knowing that I am doing it right now: sharing Spirit’s message with you in this short story today. Imagine a typical scenario - after months of searching, you find a dream home and do all you can to complete the transaction. All the while, things keep blocking you. No matter how much energy, time and effort you commit to buying your new home, the deal falls apart. You feel terrible, deeply disappointed. You keep asking the big ‘WHY?’ Until the day arrives when you find an even better home and suddenly everything flows easily into place. Deep inside, you know that this is your home: it’s not something you can explain − you just know it, feel it. You finally look back, smile and think, “Hey, I’m so glad now that I didn’t get the first home I tried so hard for!” When you flow with life and trust that everything is as it should be, then − and only then − do you allow Spirit’s divine intervention to flow with ease. Remember this the next time you feel like ‘fighting’ too hard, as perhaps it will be over something or someone that was never meant to be in the first place. The gifts and messages provided to us are endless. Trust – all is as it should be!

KEY HOLISTIC Healthy, Fit and Trim

By Christine Heckel

Now is the best time to start a body cleanse, just after the summer with its delicious foods and drinks and just before winter to be prepared for the cold season…. I recommend the Change in Health© programme developed by Christine Heckel, a 30-day Colon-FIT concept combined with relaxing and soothing sound treatments, which greatly supports the detox process as well as help you to become more balanced and strengthened. The Change in Health© programme is easy to follow and easily integrated in your regular day-to-day activities of a modern, busy lifestyle. For this programme Christine uses high quality natural supplements collaborating with SwissShape. Most people finish the programme with: - loss of weight - higher energy levels - better sleep - more happiness - feeling lighter and more flexibility - less pains - new vitality and well-being Testimonials “After a long illness after my father’s death I decided to take control of my body and embarked on a 30-day detox plan supplied by Christine.

I immediately felt better in myself, the pains in my body disappeared and I was able to move more freely. I felt nourished and stopped craving for sweet foods. After 30 days I had lost 6 kilos and felt great. I am now on the maintenance programme and would recommend SwissShape to anyone who wants to heal their body inside.” “A fantastic programme I enjoyed going through. The first days were challenging as I was used to a different eating pattern (namely constantly eating something...), but already after 3-4 days I did not miss anything, but it was easy to follow the programme. After a few days, the discomfort I have had in the middle of my back had disappeared - for me a great result as I have had this for years. The good news was that right in time for the summer and swimming season the cellulite on my legs was noticeably less and I have much more energy. My friends described me as “You are shining”. So overall I am very content with the fabulous results. I will certainly repeat this regularly, at least twice a year. Thank you.” Christine provides effective programmes for stress prevention and stress management based on sound therapy with singing bowls, in conjunction with a wide range of holistic methods tailored towards your individual needs. Cleansing your body in a holistic way is essential for health, well-being and happiness. Christine is the only Sound Massage Practitioner in Spain authorised to teach under the auspices of the Peter Hess Academy Spain. KEY ASTROLOGY The Mystical Moon With all the talk and media coverage recently about the Super ‘Blood’ Moon Total Eclipse in Aries, it seems appropriate to post an article about the Moon as a reminder of how it affects us individually and collectively. More people than ever now believe there’s more to Astrology than a sun-sign, and the Moon more than any other planet is physical evidence of this... we don’t have to look far to see how the gravitational pull of the Moon causes the ebb and flow of the seas, and for thousands of years it has ruled cycles in the life of humans. The energy of an eclipse is particularly strong and can last for up to one year. This time the axis of the Moon/Sun opposition fell in Aries and its opposite sign of Libra... that is, me (Aries) versus us (Libra) ... this Eclipse is about relationships, letting go of what isn’t working and finding a balance in order to grow in oneself as well as within a relationship. With Mercury currently retrograde in Libra (sign of relating) there’s a possibility some partnerships are already going through a period of adjustment and change.

‘Aim for the Moon, even if you miss you’ll land among the stars’... Since way back poets and songwriters have been writing and singing about the Moon … ‘Fly me to the Moon and let me play among the stars’ sang Frank Sinatra; ‘When the Moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars’ is from the musical Hair. There’s a kind of mysticism and secretive air about the Moon that has touched the minds and hearts of people throughout the ages and it’s no different today. In Astrology, the Moon rules the sign of Cancer and represents our emotions, instincts, habits, reactions, our deepest personal needs and security. It has a responsive and receptive nature and is associated with the ‘mother’ or feminine energy that is present in everyone… whichever sign and house the moon appears in the birth chart is where we look to be nurtured. As we observe the Moon circling our Sun

in a kind of protective manner reflecting the Sun’s light, so the Moon’s position in our birth chart shows how we protect and make ourselves feel secure, comfortable, and safe. Questions like how do you instinctively react or respond to problems, or what do you feel you need for a sense of security can be answered by looking at a birth chart to see which astrological sign and house the Moon was in at the time of birth. A significant aspect in astrology is between the Sun and Moon in a birth chart. For example, if the Sun makes a challenging aspect to the Moon in a person’s birth chart, it could denote a struggle between their will and their emotions especially during times of stress or anxiety. These individuals must learn to let go of the struggle, view the situation from a higher perspective and observe what is really going on! When we understand the essence of the Moon, we’re no longer ‘in the dark’ and this knowledge can offer a valuable insight into all our relationships. Traditional astrology considers the Moon to be a symbolic signifier of change, fickleness and impressionability and this is easy to understand when we see how it moves and changes in the sky with varying appearances between cycles every month. These fluctuations can be likened to our own emotions which similarly fluctuate depending on the situation in which we find ourselves. In ancient times moon cycles were used as a calendar to mark the passage of time and significant full and new moons would signal the arrival of a specific and important event in the year. Today we know more about the Moon’s surface than ever before since astronauts have analysed its structure and composition, however I doubt its deepest secrets have been exposed, because regardless of physical make-up, the Moon still holds a sense of magic and mystery for most of us… and I suspect it will continue to do so for a very long time! If you have any questions or would like to attend the ‘Astrology for Beginners Workshop’ in January 2016 in Mijas, write to Janet for details at: astrology4everyone@yahoo.co.uk or call 0034 625 987 575. Until next time...

KEY FEATURE Living the Dream

By Dario Poli

I first saw Steve Summers as he was singing at an event at the beautiful Avanto restaurant near La Cala, and as I am from a musical background I listened to him sing in his relaxed and professional manner, enjoying his style and sound of his voice, as well as the way he handled the songs. Nothing was forced, as he vocally performed his varied repertoire to a much appreciative audience.

would people hire a singer who has done the same! This is where it has changed in Spain for me.

Steve has the classical English good looks - tall, slim and fit looking, more befitting a modern movie star; an easy smile and a man that looks one straight in the eyes, which is something I appreciate. Watching him sing, I feel he belongs fronting a top class band in front of thousands of screaming fans. Perhaps one day it will happen? I hope so?

Tell me about your present music work/life and how did it all begin? Steve; I myself began at 5 years old. I had an old guitar and would make songs up. The passion for music was in me then. At 17 I was in my first Band, from there I went into studio work for K Tel Records and had a great time. I then joined a Band called LWT which toured London. I had the opportunity to work with some great artistes like Andy Gangaden, one of the best drummers in the world. In Spain I have worked with Bobby Davro and many more well-known names. In Spain life has been very good to me in this way.

So I asked him; Steve your background is from “where” so what brought you to Spain? Steve; I am Steve Summers and I am a singer on the Costa Del Sol and I came to Spain from London 13 years ago where I sung for many years as well as being a Property Developer, but when circumstances changed suddenly for me and I got an offer to come to Spain, I jumped at the chance. I originally was only coming for 3 months but loved it so much I stayed and made it my home.

I see you at the Hotel Tamisa Golf , and Avanto and other events, and you have a quite a following here on the Costa. What do you think is the secret behind your popularity? Steve; I have worked at some wonderful venues on the Coast and met some great people. I think the way to be consistent with work is to be honest to yourself. Don’t try to be something you are not. If people can see you are true in your music they can feel it themselves. If I can reach one person in a crowd and make them feel special, I am doing my job right.

What are the differences you have noticed between working here and in the UK? There are many differences working in the UK to Spain. In the UK you have to work very hard to get respect as a performer but when you do, it stays with you throughout your career, where in Spain it is different. I am not saying all, but some treat singers like “second class” people and would rather have karaoke singers in their venue who are cheaper, just to save money. Put it this way, you wouldn’t hire a builder who has learnt his trade in one month, so why

Where are you situated and how can people contact you? Steve; I am based in Mijas Costa, where I think it is the most beautiful place to live and it inspires me to sing every day. I love all music and try my best to do most styles. Pop, Soul, Blue, Disco up to modern day. If you would like to join me sometime at a gig you can contact me at stevesummers307@gmail.com or follow me on Instagram - stevesummers307. To finish this I would like to say “never give up on your dreams” if you can think it, you are half way there.

KEY FEATURE “A Soldier’s Wife”

By Marion Reynolds

In this excerpt Ellen is in India with her soldier husband. They live a luxurious lifestyle but she begins to realise that others are not so fortunate. James was very busy with his duties and was often gone for days as he and his men visited hill stations. The servants, Prithi and Vinod were very attentive but try as she might, Ellen could not get close to them. Soon Ellen made a new friend, Ada, an English girl who had met and married a sergeant from the Connaught Rangers while he was on duty in Aldershot, England. She was older than Ellen, tall with black hair and was very glamorous. She had a passion for painting in water colours and told Ellen all about it. One afternoon, while the children were having a nap, Ada arrived with her paints, brushes and easel. She had also brought a selection of her paintings, carried awkwardly by her cook. Ellen was struck by the luminous colours and delicate brush strokes in the pictures, which were mainly of flowers. Soon their painting sessions were a regular feature, usually in the cool of the morning, when James and Laurence, Ada’s husband, had reported for duty and the children were on walks with the ayahs. As they painted, Ada told Ellen about her political convictions. She was a suffragette and Ellen was ashamed that she knew so little about the movement. Mrs Major, when Ellen spoke to her about the subject, was disapproving of Ada and her modern ideas. Ellen began to feel that living with the regiment in India was like living in a bubble where they were protected from any dangerous ideas circulating in the outside world. It was a continual source of annoyance to her that no matter what she did she could not get close to either of their servants. At home, she and her family were in a similar position to Prithi’s; they were not gentry or landowners, they too were

26

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

servants. She knew that some of the people in the regiment treated their servants badly, even hitting them or threatening them. There were rumours that a girl as young as Prithi had left her position as an ayah because she was being interfered with by a certain officer. Nothing was ever done about it; the family got a new ayah and everything went back to normal. The only person she could talk to about these things was Ada. She and Ada made forays into the surrounding countryside, supposedly for painting trips but really to see what the real India looked like. They always had an escort of course. Even so, they saw the ramshackle villages, the hungry children and the filthy beggars and realised that the majority of the local people were living on the very edge of existence. Sometimes they saw villagers going to work or returning from work. Many of them were women and it was obvious that they had been working in stone quarries or on road building. They saw women walking to the nearest well, which was often miles away, or returning with large vessels of water balanced on their heads. The people in the villages were not friendly like the servants but stared at them and were resentful of their intrusion When they went home and saw their own healthy children, they felt guilty and could not get the pictures they had seen during the day out of their minds. The beauty of the country was in sharp contrast to the poverty and they saw many things which inspired them to paint: beautiful sunrises, trees with fantastical shapes, herders with their small flocks, women in flaming saris, birds with plumage that looked as though it had already been painted and jewel coloured flowers. They did not discuss the disturbing sights they had seen with anyone except each other. “A Soldier’s Wife” by Marion Reynolds is available from www.marionhreynolds.com at £8.99 and free postage or from Amazon in Kindle or paperback.

KEY SPORTS Football & Athletics Highlights San Marino V England - Euro Championship Qualifier – 5th September First starts for Leicester’s Jamie Vardy and Jonjo Shelvey of Swansea City. England took the lead through a debatable penalty when Wayne Rooney converted to equal Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 49 goals. A fine glancing header, but unfortunately in the wrong direction by the San Marino centre-back Brolli, doubled England’s lead. Ross Barkley headed England’s third goal from an Oxlade-Chamberlain chip from the bye-line. Then Walcott was introduced as a substitute and popped up at the far post to convert Luke Shaw’s cross for number 4 after 68 minutes. An Undoubted Bit Of Quality A fine low through ball by Jonjo Shelvey found Harry Kane who controlled it, went wide and exquisitely chipped the keeper for the fifth – the pick of the goals and easily the best move of the match. With twelve minutes remaining, Walcott scored his second and England’s sixth. Walcott, indeed, should have had a hat-trick but England qualified for the finals in France with three matches to spare. The Vardy Verdict…. After a bright start on his second cap, Jamie Vardy faded slightly and was anonymous for patches of the second half although he picked up towards the end. Only a six out of ten for the Leicester man though. However Vardy has been a class act for his club side though, netting six times already this season, beating last season’s tally of five. Swiss Watch as Rooney Breaks Goals Record - England v Switzerland, Wembley 8th September Wayne Rooney controlled and played a smart through ball to Milner on a blind side run but his low left-footed - shot was saved. Joe Hart had to be quick off his line to thwart Shaqiri after half an hour. Shelvey and Sterling’s distribution was poor, overall the half was too. A Rooney header was saved at the start of the second half off a decent Sterling chip. A quarter of an hour into the second half Switzerland came close to scoring off a header which Hart saved and Harry Kane was introduced. ‘Sterling reminds me of Wright-Phillips,’ remarked an ob-

server ‘Got the pace but always on the floor,’ On 66 minutes, a Rooney cross across the box fell to Harry Kane and his first time left-footed shot went into the far corner. Sterling was brought down by Timm Klose in the box on 83 minutes and Wayne Rooney converted the penalty to become leading England goal scorer of all time with 50 goals. Final score: England 2 Switzerland 0. World Athletics Championships, Beijing – 22-30 August Silly hours coverage again, held mainly in the Beijing National Stadium. Highlights were the 100 metres where after a slow start, Usain Bolt pipped Justin Gatlin on the line to win by a hundredth of a second – after Gatlin had dipped too early. Gatlin had indeed been leading until about five paces left. The 200 was more clear cut, Bolt winning it in 19.56 seconds. Greg Rutherford won the men’s long jump in 8.41 metres while Shara Proctor, despite jumping over 7 metres (7.07m), being the first UK woman to do so and setting a new national record could only finish second. A new women’s UK 200 metre record was set by Dina Asher Smith of 22.07 seconds although she only finished fifth. I don’t know who won or what time it was but it’s the UK record that counts for me, I’m a UK man, know what I mean? The previous record of 22.10 by Kathy Cook had stood since 1984. Shelayna Oskan-Clarke finished fifth in the women’s 800 metres with a respectable time of 1.58.99 while American Ashton Eaton set a new decathlon World Record of 9045 points. Whoops! Another balls-up in the relay! In the men’s 4 x100 metre relay, the UK baton was never exchanged, the anchor leg ran too early and out of the box. Horrible inconsistencies have crept into the relay squad in recent years with batons either dropped or not exchanged at all because the sprinter ran out of the box too early. There was, still, however, a new UK record (42.10fseconds) in the women’s 4 x100 metre relay heats and a creditable bronze in the 4 x 400 metre relay for both the women’s and men’s teams. Mo Farah won the 5000 and 10000 metres and Great Britain’s final medals tally was four golds (Jessica Ennis-Hill won the heptathlon), one silver and two bronze.

KEY MOTOR Children in Cars As of 1st of October 2015, all children measuring 135 cm in height or less must ride in the rear seats of a vehicle, irrespective of their age, and in addition to the requirements of the correct seat being provided appropriate to their size and weight. There are a number of exceptions to the rule, for example, when the vehicle does not have rear seats, when all rear seats are already occupied by others under the same characteristics, and where it is not possible to install approved child restraints in those rear seats. These are the only occasions when children may occupy a front seat, but they must always use the restraint system approved for their height and weight. This new provision is contained in the amendment of art. 117. The amendment of that article also stipulates that child restraints must be installed in the vehicle in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer and the instructions that will indicate how and what kind of vehicles can be used safely. The change to the law in Spain has been prompted on account of the DGT seeing growing concerns for the safety of children in vehicles. In 2014, 2 of the 14 children under 12 years of age who were killed whilst travelling in vehicles were not wearing any safety device at the time of the accident. It was the same for 9 out of the 82 children who were seriously injured; they too were not wearing any kind of restraint. The DGT therefore made it one of their priority objectives in the 2011-2020 Road Safety Strategy, to ensure that no child loses their life as a result of not being properly restrained. Therefore, as well as clarifying the laws and making them

Provided by n332.es easier to understand, the DGT have also increased the powers of the traffic police in dealing with adults who fail to take necessary responsibility for children, including the immediate immobilisation of a vehicle where children are found to be travelling without appropriate safety restraints. To make the matter even clearer, there are a number of Golden Rules that must be followed regarding children in vehicles. Never carry a child in your arms or use the same seat belt that is protecting the adult. The use of child restraint systems (CRS) reduced the risk of death by 75% and the severity of injuries by 90%. Make sure the seat is properly installed. It should not move and ought to be properly secured, the recommended option being the Isofix anchorage system. The child’s head should never hover higher than or over the back of the seat. If this happens it must be replaced by another of a suitable size. If the child has to ride in the front seat, because of one of the three exceptions, if the vehicle has front airbags, you must only use a rear-facing restraint if the airbag has been deactivated. Always make sure that the restraints are well anchored, even on short journeys, where the highest number of risk behaviours accumulate. It is recommended that you continue to use appropriate and approved child restraint system until the child reaches 150 cm in height. Once a child is taller than 150 cm, then they must use the vehicle seat belt. It is important to note that it is the responsibility of the adults transporting children to ensure their safety, as well as their own.

KEY COMPUTERS Upgrading to Windows 10 not as smooth as we had hoped

By Computer City

Windows 10 was made available on July 29 and since then millions of people have been upgrading. Microsoft has made it very easy to upgrade by letting users reserve their free copy of Windows 10 using the app or by grabbing the ISO files to perform a clean installation of the operating system. However, not everyone is having a smooth upgrade experience. Since launch day, many users have been reporting some errors and different problems while trying to upgrade, some of these issues involve not being able to install Windows 10. Others simply are not seeing the upgrade and many users are also reporting issues activating the operating system after a clean install, and a variety of other issues. Microsoft has been proactively working to ensure Windows 10 is bug-free. For example, on day one the company rolled a huge update to resolve many problems around the new

40

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

operating system. Only a week later the company released another servicing update focussed on fixing various issues in the operating system, an update that many people have referred to as Service Release 1 (SR1), but it’s simply a non-security cumulative update. However, we’re in the early days of Windows 10, as such with all the work Microsoft is doing, we’re expecting to run into a few issues, even more when Microsoft is offering Windows as a Service meaning that Windows is technically never done. We have seen issues with emails not sending after the update; also the antivirus has caused the Cortina and start button not to function. At Computercity we are already well versed in these problems and can help get your Windows 10 on track again.

KEY LAW Safe Harbor

By Victoria Anzola, Iberdata 21 S.L.

It has been confirmed that the legal status of the US-EU Safe Harbor Framework, in its current form, will be decided by the Court of Justice of the European Union on Tuesday, 6th October. A decision was not expected for several weeks, but the current negotiations on EU Data Protection draft Regulation, and data transfers to the US, may have speeded up the process. The Court of Justice of the European Union’s Advocate General, Yves Bot, has issued an opinion on the EU-US Safe Harbor saying that it is invalid as an automatic assurance of privacy due to breaches of fundamental rights of privacy and data protection in the US. In a clear win for national DP Authorities in the so called Max Schrems / Facebook case, the AG says that the EU Commission’s adequacy finding cannot eliminate or even reduce the national supervisory authorities’ independent powers, and that the DPAs are free to suspend transfers if they consider they do not fulfil the adequacy requirements for international data transfers. In this case, the DPAs would be allowed to stop transfers of personal data of European Facebook subscribers to servers located in the United States. While the Advocate General’s opinion is not binding, the Court usually follows it. It is expected that the final decision by the European Court of Justice will be taken in a few months’ time. “If the Court of Justice follows this opinion it will cause real headaches for many US businesses who are operating in the EU.” “The decision illustrates how privacy and data protection have become fundamental constitutional rights in the European Union. The decision may also have a wider impact also affecting other decisions of the EU Commission in relation

to international data transfers. In the meantime, the US mission to the European Union has issued a statement which says that the Advocate - is wrong in inviting the court to conclude that the current Safe Harbor Framework is inadequate. They say that the US and the EU are working on strengthening the framework. ‘Given the important privacy and trade benefits that Safe Harbor provides to EU and US citizens and businesses, we will continue to work closely with the European Commission to improve the Safe Harbor Framework. We hope that the final judgment of the European Court of Justice takes note of these efforts, inaccuracies in and far-reaching consequences of the Advocate General’s opinion, as well as the significant harm to the protection of individual rights and the free flow of information that would occur if it were to follow the Advocate General’s opinion.’ Jan Philipp Albrecht, the European Parliament’s rapporteur on the EU DP draft Regulation said: “The advocate general has [today] made clear that the transfer of EU citizens’ private data to the US by Facebook is at odds with EU law. This welcome finding must provoke an immediate response by the relevant authorities in Europe. The Irish data protection commissioner must immediately move to prevent any further data transfers to the US by Facebook, which operates under Irish jurisdiction. The finding also confirms the position of the European Parliament, which has already called for Safe Harbor to be suspended. It is unacceptable that the European Commission has ignored this demand for a year and a half. It is now time for the Commission to finally suspend Safe Harbor.” For more information please contact me, Victoria, on: 957 404 099 / 692 671 657 or visit our website: www.iberdata21.com.

KEY FINANCE The Gap is closing in the Spanish Property Market

By Smart Currency Exchange

For much of this year, we have seen a continuous theme at Smart Currency Exchange – continually strengthening sterling and low property prices across Spain creating a perfect storm for British buyers wanting to purchase their dream property here. The Kyero Spanish House Index’s data for the first half of 2015 shows that the average house price in Spain hovered around 234,000 euros from January to June. At the beginning of January, when the GBP/EUR rate was 1.2876 this property would have cost £181,733; by the end of June, when the rate hit 1.4137, the cost would have been £165,523 – a significant saving of over £16,000. However, the tables are finally beginning to turn for Spain. Reports earlier this month from the National Statistics Institute (INE) show that not only are house prices beginning to rise for the first time since 2008, but the Spanish construction industry is also beginning to heal. What has also become apparent since June is just how reliant the strength of sterling has been on the weakness of the euro; with positive sentiment finally coming from the

Eurozone after the optimistic end of continued discussions between Greece and its creditors, and investors flocking to the single currency as a safe haven after the Black Monday Chinese stock market slump last month, sterling bore the brunt of this as the GBP/EUR slumped to four month lows. Looking at that same average property price of 234,000 euros, at the beginning of August when the GBP/EUR rate was 1.4254 this would have cost £164,164 while at the beginning of September the same property now costs £172,210; an increase of more than £8,000 in just one month. The currency market is incredibly volatile at the current time, and it remains to be seen if sterling will continue to weaken. The increased property prices and the resurging strength of the euro mean that now could be a key time to snap up that bargain place in the sun. If you are looking to purchase property in Spain in the coming weeks and months, why not pop into Smart Currency Exchange’s office in Cala de Mijas to discuss your options, or give us a call on 951 401 921? KEY FINANCE The Lemming Theory! “Why is it common practice that when someone sees someone else making a bad decision, it is perceived as acceptable to follow suit?” Does the “Power of Advertising” always need to win, blinding people into making what could possibly be the wrong choice for them? Why do we feel almost obliged to join in with something that could ultimately offer us less instead of more or make us worse off rather than better off?? Could we at Right Way Insurance help you to take a fresh look at how you make future decisions when it comes to your Insurance needs? Let’s see.. Did you know that more people choose Direct Line than nearly any other insurance company? Why? Well, they are bold in their marketing, slick even, with a loud beeping car horn on a glossy red telephone that propels its shininess right at us, grabbing our attention and making it TOO difficult to ignore. It obviously works!! We learn to trust the power of the Media, that it must be the best deal available because they all tell us so and their advertising budgets allow them to flash their feathers. But should we believe every BEEP we hear or should we SWERVE our attentions for one moment to the fact that there actually could be an alternative and one that would offer us BETTER rewards for our custom? Did you know compared to our closest competitors, we offer more cover for you on our Car Insurance Policies. We are talking serious reasons to consider why the “Lemming Theory” may not be the best motivation for choosing who you go with for your Insurance Cover. For example here are

Entertainment was provided throughout the evening by Laura Elen, one of the most professional singers on the coast who got the crowd on their feet and dancing continued into the early hours. By Olivia’s La Cala

A trendy new Beachfront Fine Dining Establishment in La Cala de Mijas

Olivia’s La Cala has brought something new to La Cala - a fine dining experience on the Mediterranean beachfront of the Costa del Sol. The restaurant was opened only 2 months ago by Elliot Wright, former star of TOWIE – a UK reality TV show. He transformed the old ‘Mijas Playa Club’ into an exquisite beachfront establishment with an outside cocktail bar which looks over the sea, a stylish fine dining restaurant and a rooftop Champagne cocktail lounge sponsored by Moet Chandon. The idyllic setting is perfect for coffee mornings, business lunches and late night cocktails with live music every day and an in-house DJ to keep you dancing until the early hours. It is also possible to hire the Champagne Cocktail bar for private events such as private parties, business events and society clubs. Olivia’s Executive Head Chef has worked with Elliot for nearly 15 years, assisting him with start-up, high-end restaurants around Europe. The Chef’s passion for food is expressed through his dishes - an interna-

tional fusion of modern and traditional Australasian cuisine. During October, Olivia’s is open for trendy breakfasts and detox juices from 10.00am. The Head Chef will also be introducing a modern twist to the traditional tapas at lunch time and there are delicious chocolate delights available by Olivia’s own Master Chocolatier. As an introduction to the Chef’s culinary fine dining, he has prepared a two-course winter set menu for only 25.00 euros, from Monday to Wednesday, so you can come and enjoy an unforgettable experience at Olvia’s La Cala. Elliot Wright has already hosted several successful parties at Olivia’s La Cala including the Grand Opening night of the high-end champagne cocktail bar, where many of the TOWIE cast could be spotted. The parties don’t stop there -The Masquerade Duo will be entertaining guests on 30th October, another night to remember, and you can regularly see Quike Navarro, house-violinist, Pete Rothwell and Zoe Louise during evenings throughout the month. As the festive season approaches, the restaurant prepares for Christmas parties, superb set lunch menus and a magical New Year’s Eve party which will kick start your New Year with Moet and spectacular fireworks. Olivia’s La Cala is truly unique experience. Reservations: Tel: 952 494 935 -www.oliviaslacala.com.

KEY FEATURE Spaniards Spend an Average of 50% of their Income on Housing Costs

Provided by Shaw Marketing

Spaniards spend an average of 50% of their income on housing costs compared to 40% being the European average. Real Estate network RE/MAX Europe conducted a survey about how Europeans live and what they are looking for in housing. This survey revealed some very interesting findings about the European market as a whole and how Spain differs, including the fact that on average Spaniards spend 50% of their income on housing costs, including rent or mortgages and operating costs. It reveals that 61% of Europeans are homeowners, and that in Spain 80% of couples surveyed living together with children, owned their own homes rather than rented. It showed that those that rent tend to spend more money on housing costs than those who own a property. When asked about sharing property and who those surveyed were living with, in Spain 70.6% lived with a partner, as do the majority of Europeans. Unlike other parts of Europe, in Spain, 17.6% of those surveyed lived with their parents. Out of the 20-29 year olds that figure increased to 54.1%, very different to western European countries. Only 7% of Spaniards live on their own, compared to an average of 15% in the rest of Europe. 59.2% of those surveyed felt that Spain was an expensive place to live, with 26% thinking that the costs of renting a

house is becoming more expensive, and on average Spaniards spend 50% on housing costs. This is significantly higher than the European average of 40%, raising alarm bells for some experts. However, this figure ranges widely within Europe with every fifth European only spending 20% of income on housing, but 9% saying they spend between 70 and 90% on housing costs. CEO of RE/MAX Top Homes on Marbella’s prestigious Golden Mile commented, “It is really useful to have data showing us how people are living around Europe and also see the differences between Spaniards and other Europeans. Due to the cosmopolitan nature of Marbella, 80% of our buyers are foreign, and therefore studying the European statistics is helpful for us to understand them better. We see that the foreign buyers disagree with the statement that Spain is an expensive place to live, seeing the benefit of comparatively low proper ty prices and long term rental costs, as well as lower costs of alcohol, tobacco and food compared to the UK and Nor thern Europe. This gives foreign buyers a lower overall cost of living and a positive impression of the country which is fuelling interest in Spanish proper ties from around Europe. To read the full report visit www.at-home-in-europe.eu. KEY FEATURE Bog-Standard Business Many locals will recognise either the distinctive van or the face of Charlie Mullins both pictured above as both he and his vans can be seen regularly in Mijas Costa where Charlie spends part of his time. Below is a short resume of the book, aptly named BogStandard Business. “I’m a millionaire plumber. I went from being a North London street urchin to owning London’s biggest independent plumbing firm, which I built myself from scratch. We turn over more than GBP20 million a year, and we’re growing. The country’s best plumbers and heating engineers queue up to work for me. We are the plumbers of choice for London’s high society - movie stars and celebrities of all kinds. I’m mates with David Cameron, George Osborne and Boris Johnson. How did that happen? In this frank and absorbing memoir, Charlie Mullins describes his meteoric rise from an impoverished childhood in London, to owner of one of the most renowned and respected businesses in the UK, Pimlico Plumbers. He reveals how he survived his tough upbringing, became a parent himself and had to bid a painful farewell to his first passion - boxing. In this honest and moving account, Charlie explains how he worked his way up from apprentice level, through sheer hard graft and determination, to conquer the plumbing world - and met a few

Latest Book from Charlie Mullins interesting characters in the process. Larger than life, and full of humour, this is a valuable insight into how to build a business, and the courage required to make it a success”. Editor’s Note: Bog-Standard Business is an interesting read and gives insight into a subject which has recently hit the headlines, i.e. the lack of apprenticeships in the UK leading to a chronic shortage of skilled workers. It also gives insight into the man himself and how it is possible to lead a very successful life despite coming from humble beginnings, which is something that I believe is inherent in the makeup of British entrepreneurs. It is that determination and thinking outside the box which has not only led to many successful ex-pat businesses here in Mijas Costa, but has also enabled many expats to remain in their adopted country during an extremely long period of recession. I believe this spirit has also been taken on by many of our Spanish neighbours who realise that we Brits on the Costa del Sol do have something to add to the local community albeit that it may seem a bit different to their own traditional customs. Bog-Standard Business can be purchased from www.amazon.co.uk.

Picture sitting by a log fire over the festive season. I know we mostly think of sun and warm weather but it does turn cold overnight and the warmth of the fireside is very welcome in our homes down here especially as they are not insulated like back home and also we tend not to have carpets either. Your fire is left dormant for several months of the year and during this time, birds can have built a nest in the chimney stack and leaves and other dirt can have got lodged in there too. In recent years there have been more and more reports of chimneys catching fire so make sure you have your chimney serviced before it turns really cold as you don’t want yours to be the next one to catch fire. We have used Apex Chimneys on a number of occasions and can therefore personally recommend their services. Contact details for Apex Chimneys can be found on page 46.
