Welcome to the first issue of Key to Mijas Costa for 2016. Here at Key to Mijas Costa for 2016 we have decided to change our publication dates. There will still be 6 issues a year, but we will have an extra one during the busy period in the summer and one to cover Christmas and New Year which will be published at the end of November. Anticipated publication dates for the rest of the year will be as follows: 22nd April, 3rd June, 25th July, 26th September and 28th November In this issue of the magazine, on page 16, you will find information on the Positively Pink and Positively Blue screening campaigns for 2016. KEY HEALTH Dental Veneers

By Belinda Pamos, Sonrisa

Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-coloured materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their colour, shape, size, or length. Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials.

• Teeth that are discoloured -- either because of root canal treatment; stains from tetracycline or other drugs, excessive fluoride or other causes; or the presence of large resin fillings that have discoloured the tooth. • Teeth that are chipped or broken. • Teeth that are misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped (for example, have craters or bulges in them). • Teeth with gaps between them (to close the space between these teeth). Veneers can be made and fitted on the same day !!!!!!

What Types of Problems Do Dental Veneers Fix? Veneers are routinely used to fix:

KEY HEALTH Why is Cervical Screening so Important in Women’s Health?

By Medicare

- A Cervical Smear test is an important part of maintaining health for all women who have ever been sexually active. Some women may find the smear test uncomfortable or embarrassing and so may put off having one. - This examination only takes a few minutes and could save your life. - Annual smear tests reduce your risk of Cervical Cancer by 92%. - In the UK alone it is estimated to save 1,000 lives each year. - 80-90% of abnormalities are detected through regular smear tests, and can be treated early to prevent Cancer. - In 2015 it is estimated that 5 million women missed their smear test. WHAT IS A SMEAR TEST? In a private room with a female nurse we will ask you to lie on an examination couch with a blanket over you. You will be asked to lie in position with you feet together and knees apart and a disposable plastic speculum will be inserted into your vagina. This holds the walls of the vagina open so your cervix can be seen. We will then use a tiny brush or spatula to gently scrape off a sample of your cervical cells.

These cells are then smeared onto a glass slide to be sent to the laboratory. The speculum is then removed, with minimal discomfort within those few minutes. WHEN IS IT BEST TO DO A SMEAR TEST? The Department of Health recommends women between the ages of 25 and 64 years of age, have routine smears. In our opinion all women that are sexually active need to be screened regardless of age. It is best to schedule your smear for the middle of your menstrual cycle as it is easiest to get a good sample at this time. If you are menstruating it may be too difficult for us to get an adequate sample, or if you think you may be pregnant it is best for us to know, and we can test for this. HOW ARE THE RESULTS GIVEN AND WHAT DO THEY MEAN? After 7 to 10 days you will be recalled to the clinic to discuss your results. If there are abnormal cell changes, you will be referred for a follow up appointment. If the cells are clear, you will wait another year before re booking unless you have any concerns in the meantime. At Clinica Medicare all our cervical smear tests are performed by female nurses who are experienced in Women’s health.

KEY HEALTH Genius Genie Take Ten

By Anne Stark

As we get older, our muscles shrink causing surrounding fat and tissue to take on a drooping appearance. With exercise and the right diet we can generally keep our bodies in shape but the facial muscles have been more difficult to exercise, until now. When the facial muscles begin to shrink, the drooping effect on the face can be very aging. By rebuilding the aging muscle mass to its previous state, the face is fuller and benefits from a visible lift which can be retrained with regular treatments. This fuller, healthier look also helps to eliminate many lines and wrinkles. The Genie Take Ten is a perfectly natural way to exercise facial muscles. Because we are all “power” building, a 10-minute treatment is sufficient to achieve all that is possible in one session. For 24 hours after a treatment the muscles are still working and regenerating themselves. I have been working with the Genie Machine for five years now and I know exactly what the machine can do! After a course of treatments, a top-up treatment is recommended every 3 to 4 weeks or more frequent treatments are perfectly safe. Take Ten treatments are for people who want to look their best in a natural way. Please see the advertisement on page 9. Marijke suffers from Bell’s Palsy and we have had some amazing results with Genie Take Ten. Diamond Microdermabrasion is the treatment that everybody loves. If you have not tried it yet, it is a must. After the first treatment you will love it. Whether you only have one treatment or perhaps weekly treatments for four weeks depending on your skin’s condition, together we will make a plan tailor made for you. If it’s a massage, waxing, feet, eye treatments or excellent facials, I always make sure you benefit from all the latest products and my continuous training will ensure excellent, down to earth treatments.

KEY HEALTH Travel the Healthy Way Restlessness and feeling tired aren’t necessarily the only side effects of long trips. The dangers of travel-related health problems have attracted growing attention as people are more mobile than ever, regularly travelling long distances in airplanes and cars. Health Considerations Looking after your circulation is really important as complications can occur in just about any environment of prolonged sitting. In particular, long periods of immobility, not drinking enough fluids and water loss in dry, compressed airplane cabins can result in swelling due to insufficient blood circulation, with fluids accumulating in tissues throughout the legs. Most people will notice the effects of in-flight swelling if they take their shoes off and have difficulty putting them on again at the end of a flight. This can be alleviated by drinking plenty of water, moving your legs and ankles and getting up for regular walks during a flight. However, in some cases, leg and ankle swelling can lead to dangerous conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which is when a blood clot forms in one of the deep veins in the body. DVT can cause pain and swelling in the leg and may lead to complications such as pulmonary embolism. This is when a piece of blood clot breaks off into the bloodstream and blocks one of the blood vessels in the lungs. DVT and pulmonary embolism together are known as venous thromboembolism (VTE), which is estimated to be the third most common cardiovascular disorder after cornary heart disease and stroke. Over 750,000 VTE events are estimated to occur annually in six major EU countries including Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the UK. Pycnogenol and Improved Circulation There are natural ways to improve your circulation and protect against swelling and DVT. Pycnogenol® is an extract from the bark of the French maritime pine tree. It is a blend of active bioflavonoids, also found in fresh fruits and vegetables, and has been shown to help prevent against swelling and potential DVT. The benefits of Pycnogenol have also been compared to the wearing of compression stockings, which is typically advised for DVT patients. Individuals who suffered a single episode of DVT were treated for one year with compression stockings or Pycnogenol. A third group received both treatments. Pycnogenol was found to lower pressure in veins in the same way as compression stockings and to provide greater relief from pain, restless limbs, subjective swelling and skin alterations during the one year trial. Even greater symptom relief was found in the third group using both Pycnogenol and compression stockings. Pycnogenol and Jet-lag Symptoms Wide-awake at 3AM, only to be drowsy at lunchtime? Prob-

By Pharmanord lems acclimatising to a new time zone can slow down trips and make for grumpiness. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to help. Bright light stimulates your body to be awake, so if you need to be awake, open the curtains or get outside. Conversely, if you need to sleep use dim lights indoors. A study published in the journal of Minerva Cardioangiologica also reveals that Pycnogenol reduces jet-lag by nearly 50 per cent in passengers taking 7 to 9 hour flights. The two-part study, consisting of a brain CT scan and a scoring system, showed Pycnogenol lowered symptoms of jet-lag such as fatigue, headaches, insomnia and brain edema (swelling) in both healthy individuals and hypertensive patients. The study consisted of 133 passengers. 50 mg of oral Pycnogenol was administered three times daily for seven days, starting two days prior to the flight. For further advice on travel health or more information on the wide ranging benefits of Pycnogenol, visit ANNI’s Vital Store in Elviria. Contact details can be found in the advertisement below.

KEY HEALTH What is a Sports Massage? In a nutshell, a Sports Massage is ‘the manipulation of soft tissue to release tension, reduce pain, restore range of movement and to promote good condition’. All of the aforementioned are achieved through a range of techniques. Obviously, every person I see in the clinic is different, they are all shapes and sizes and they all have different tolerance levels. Therefore, each treatment has to be adapted accordingly. If there is pain or discomfort, loss of mobility or restriction of movement I, as a soft tissue therapist, can treat and hopefully cure the problem. If, on the other hand, there is a sporting activity or a training schedule that the client is following, then, regular treatments can enhance performance. A Sports Massage is not only for sports people. Our everyday working lives and lifestyles can create the same set of problems and these, in the same way, can also be treated successfully.

14

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

Massage has a number of benefits which are physical, physiological and psychological. It can help maintain the body in better condition, prevent injuries and loss of mobility to injured muscle tissue and if you are a sports person, massage can help boost performance and extend the overall life of your sporting career. Quite often, after having received a Sports Massage from me, I shall give you some home-work to do. I firmly believe that the client has to take responsibility for their own health. I shall show you exercises specific to your problem, these will have to be performed preferably on a daily basis to aid your recovery. This in turn makes the following appointment less painful! To make an appointment please call Clinica Medicare in La Cala de Mijas on 952 835 776 or call me on 666 170 868.

The Charity Would Like To Take This Opportunity To Thank Its Sponsors:

KEY FEATURE Positively Pink & Positively Blue’s 2016 Screening Programmes Commence We are delighted to advise that both the Positively Pink & Positively Blue screening programmes for 2016 will start in February and will run until December. As you may already know, “Positively Pink” & “Positively Blue” are the Mijas-based charities with the sole aim to raise the necessary funds to provide education, support and a FREE breast or prostate/testicular screening for British men and women living on the Costa del Sol. For the ladies, “Positively Pink” offers a comprehensive (Gold Standard) screening process that includes a consultation, physical examination, health education as well as a mammogram or ultrasound. As well as this, ladies will also receive a translation into English of the result(s). Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. The lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is one in nine. Each year there are approximately 41,000 new diagnoses. The incidence of breast cancer for men is on the increase too with approximately 300 new cases diagnosed yearly in the UK. It has been shown that early detection of breast cancer can improve the outcome. Survival rates from breast cancer have improved partly in recent years due to early presentation and from individuals being breast aware. The risk of breast cancer increases with age. 80% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50 though Positively Pink believes that screening should be available to all women from 18 years of age. For the men, “Positively Blue” offers a free consultation and PSA blood (Prostate) test as well as education and awareness on how to self examine for testicular cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with more than 30,000 men diagnosed annually. Around 10,000 men die from it every year, making it the second most common cause of cancer deaths in men. Often, in the early stages, Prostate cancer has no symptoms. Testicular cancer affects 1 in 500 men between the ages of 15 and 50. Both screening programmes are carried out in conjunction with Clinica Medicare, a nurse-led, British health centre based in La Cala de Mijas. Dr. David Deardon, a UK-trained Specialist, oversees the screening programme for Positively Pink (he also Heads up The British Surgical Clinic). Dr. Wolfgang Kleimeier is a Specialist in Urology and he oversees the Positively Blue screening programme (he also Heads up Clinica Urologica in Marbella). Clinica Medicare, Dr. Deardon and Dr. Kleimeier all provide their time, clinic space and expertise free of charge to the charity.

A special message from the Charities’ founder: Lorraine Palmer, the founder of both Positively Pink & Positively Blue, continues to believe that “early detection is your best protection”. She would like to thank everyone who continues to support the charities, from our small team of volunteers who work tirelessly with the support of the local businesses who each year ensure that we are able to continue in giving you access to the FREE Screening programmes. The 2016´s programmes are being launched differently and we need to make you aware of some fundamental changes. Both programmes will be restricted in the number of appointments available due to the reduction of income during 2015. In 2015 Positively Pink screened in excess of 900 ladies and Positively Blue screened in excess of 450 men. To run these programmes and offer this many screenings, the charities spent in excess of 80,000.00 euros. As in previous years, both programmes are offered FREE of Charge, however the charity would now ask that each attendee make a donation (the charity is suggesting a minimum donation of at least 10.00 Euros, more if possible, is made) as without the sufficient funds, the charities will NOT be able to offer these invaluable screening programmes in future years, to the community. The 2016 campaign began in February and appointments will be available by calling Clinica Medicare on: 952 835 776. PLEASE NOTE: Bookings for the whole of 2016 can already be made and will be offered on a 1st come, 1st served basis. Please do not delay in making a booking, as if you do, we may not be able to offer you a screening in 2016! “What can YOU do to help “Positively Pink & Positively Blue, Costa del Sol”? If you would like to host or organise an event (such as a coffee morning, sponsored walk/run), have an event in mind, would like to help us raise awareness or you would like to get involved with the charity please get in touch on Tel: 952 835 776 or email: info@positively-pink.com. KEY HOLISTIC Bathing in Sound - Experiencing Harmony! Have you ever bathed in sound? The Sound Bath is the New Meditation! Imagine being immersed in beautiful sounds that are healing to your body, mind and soul... The Sound Bath is an exceptional sound experience. It may be an unforgettable sound experience for those who seek deep relaxation, rejuvenation and an acceleration of their inward journey. Time is suspended as you enter a world of vibration, sensation and experience. Physical injuries can be healed and old emotional traumas released. Great insights can be accessed as you connect with your inner self. You feel truly, vibrantly alive. The sounds of the gong and singing bowls Christine Heckel plays for you accompany you gently on your inward journey; they have a regenerative and cleansing effect. They harmonize body and mind. Nada Brahma - everything is sound - is an aphorism from the Indian Vedas, which represents the Being, our Being, the Being of Everything using the harmonious interaction of vibration. And this is probably why most people very easily dive into a very deep relaxation with these divine sounds of the singing bowls and gongs. These sounds can reach us in a way that will lead us to different levels of consciousness. Detached from the constantly flowing thoughts, they may connect us with the natural rhythms of life and

By Christine Heckel

open up access to our deeper personal layers. The soothing sounds vibrate deep into our body on a cellular level, massaging our internal organs to release deeply seated stress. A Sound Bath is a general term for experiencing relaxation and transformation through sound and vibration. But, what makes it so interesting is the intention to bring people back into a balanced, whole state, by playing specially tuned instruments and frequencies. Christine works only with Therapy singing bowls, especially tuned for this kind of work. When people enter a space open to examine the deeper realms of consciousness through vibration in the form of deep ambient, acoustic sound, transformation is believed to occur that is long lasting. In the words of Jonathan Goldman, we most remind ourselves that “intention + frequency = healing.” A Sound Bath can be a “Once you’ve had your first Sound Bath you’ll want more”. Christine Heckel is an official representative of the Peter Hess Institute (Germany). She is the only sound massage practitioner in Spain authorised to teach under the auspices of the Peter Hess Academy Spain. She offers regular group activities as well as professional training on Sound Massage. For more information check her website www.christine-heckel.com

KEY ASTROLOGY A Brief Look at Some Astrological Events in 2016 Welcome to the first edition of Key to Mijas Costa magazine in 2016... quite a different kind of year astrologically to the last one with possibly a few bumps during the first half then gradually easing as the year goes on. I say bumps as there are two planetary retrogrades coming up that can’t be ignored. I explained the retrograde phenomena in a recent article but briefly it is the illusion of a planet slowing down and turning backwards in the sky, retracing its steps, so to speak. The first and most important is planet Mars, which turns retrograde on 18th April and doesn’t go direct until 2nd July 2016, a full two and a half months! The nature of Mars isn’t comfortable slowing down as it loses momentum and becomes frustrated taking one step forward and two steps back. Mars is fire, energy, passion... great attributes that help to push us forward but not necessarily when this planet goes retrograde. In fact during this period it would be wise to slow down and take a second look at certain goals if you think they are going a bit off-key. Delays can frustrate action, in turn causing anger and irritability! Have patience! Try to let things flow in the most natural way, don’t force or push anything at this time as the consequence may not be to your liking! Understand that not everyone wants to move in the same direction or at the same pace as you. When the retrograde period is over, in this instance at the beginning of July, Mars will settle back to his old self and the pace will pick up once again! The second retrograde is our old friend Mercury, the messenger planet which rules the mind and every aspect of communication. From 29th April until 23rd May 2016 Mercury turns retrograde in the sign of Taurus where judgement on financial matters will need extra care, so eye any new ventures with caution at this time. Like Mercury, we need to slow down too and take care not to overlook the finer details, whether that involves reading the small print in a contract (before signing it of course) or sending a cheque in the post. The most important thing to remember when planets go retrograde, is to slow down with them... our lives are so full on there seems hardly time to smell the coffee, let alone drink it! Enjoy

18

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

the ride even if it goes at a snail’s pace - you’ll reach your destination eventually! A much rarer event involving Mercury is when it crosses the Sun. This occurs only so many times each century and not always during the day. However on 9th May 2016 at 1.12pm (Spanish time) we shall have the opportunity to witness this crossing as it will be visible from the US, Europe and the UK... Symbolism is everywhere in Astrology and this Mercury crossing is no exception. Think of it this way... the Moon reflects light but the Sun shines a light on everything in its path, in fact nothing escapes it and Mercury, planet of the mind and communication will be literally bathing in the spotlight as it crosses the Sun! On a personal level this could be a time when our potential to shine is revealed, we may feel more courageous about opening up and speaking our truth and by doing so we will honour ourselves as well as others. Turning to the second half of 2016 and especially from September when the planet Jupiter moves into the sign of Libra. I feel a more harmonious time will descend upon us as Jupiter the planet of abundance and expansion travels through Libra the sign of balance and harmony which is ruled by Venus the planet of love... now you don’t need to be an astrologer to put these altogether! Romance could be in the air for some, while others already in a relationship may decide to up the stakes further. As Jupiter is also the planet of gambling as well as luck, perhaps it’s time to take a chance and gamble on love? I can only say this, in Astrology nothing is a given; planets in signs and houses and the aspects they make are only potentials; the outcome of any situation will always and only ever be what we choose to make of it... Due to my work on other projects at the moment, my time is limited and the next astrology article will appear in the June issue of Key to Mijas Costa magazine. I shall still be running Astrology for Beginners Workshops, one a month from April to June; if you are interested in astrology and want to find out more then come along and

The following are two of the testimonials I received after last month’s workshop: Beginners Astrology Workshop, 29 January 2016: “Working with your own birth chart, Janet makes a seemingly complex subject easy to understand by breaking it down into ‘bite-size’ chunks. Through completing the simple exercises, you feel as though you’re making real

progress, even as a beginner. By the end of the workshop everyone was amazed at how much they had learned in just four hours! I can thoroughly recommend this workshop, and am really looking forward to the next one. Thanks Janet.” Gill S, Mijas. Beginners Astrology Workshop 29th January 2016: “I really enjoyed attending the astrology workshop with Janet Powell. I have found Janet to be very professional and inspiring. It was wonderful to understand and learn step by step how to interpret my own astrological birth chart. Janet explained things clearly and very patiently, it was extremely helpful and clarifying. Looking forward to the follow-up session. Thank you Janet.” K. Emery, La Cala

KEY SPORTS Arrows!

By Steve Billingham

BDO World Darts Championship - January 2-10 De Vreede playing in a Pacman shirt, wasn’t even born when his opponent, American, Larry Butler, made his last Lakeside appearance in 1992. Darryl Fitton missed several match darts and should have won 3-1 against veteran, Dennis Barbour. But Barbour clawed back and eventually won in sudden death after it was tied at 2 sets all and 9 legs apiece. A very tough and entertaining match - the best of the first round. Ted Hankey, back after a 4-year absence, was beaten 3-0 by Martin Phillips while current World Champion, Scott Mitchell, had a close shave but came from behind to edge over 3-2. Richard Veenstra, on his debut, played some entertaining darts in a 3-2 win over the number 3 seed, de Graaf, a very evenly matched contest between two Dutchmen. From a Dutch nip and tuck affair to a Yorkshire nip and tuck affair between John Boy Walton and Brian Dawson - another tough match, no quarter given. Dawson came from behind to level at 2 sets all after Walton had 2 match darts to win 3-1, then took the deciding set by 4 legs to 2. Excellent matches in round 2 Harbour met Phillips in round 2. Both men well into their 50’s, Harbour played at his own pace slowing up occasionally as well and prevailed by 4 sets to 1. Mark McGeeney missed 8 match darts and went down in sudden death to defending champion Scott Mitchell.

Scotty was Somehow too Hotty! Belgium’s Geert de Vos was 3-1 up and cruising (might have even been 3-0 up actually) in his match with Scott Waites but with the quarter finals looming seemed to lose his nerve a bit and there was a shift in momentum. ‘De Vos looks like he wants to get off the stage,’ quipped the commentator strangely at a point when De Vos was still ahead. De Vos’s scoring rapidly declined. His average went from 102 to 64 and Waites was able to level the match at 3 sets apiece. After winning just one leg in 3 sets, de Vos had 3 arrows at tops to get back into the match but Waites hit double 8 to break his throw. Waites then took out 158 to move 2 legs up. Single 9 and double 8 wrapped up a totally unlikely, at one point, Waites victory. Veenstra made the semis on his debut, Barbour’s run ended to Jeff Smith (2-5) while Jamie Hughes progressed over Armes the Dutchman (5-1). Scott Waites edged Glen Durrant in another cracker coming back from 2-4 down to win 5-4. The semi final between Canadian Jeff Smith and Richard Veenstra was a cracker, Smith won by 2 clear legs and 6 sets to 5 with a 10 darter. After beating Hughes in the semi, Scott Waites followed up his 2013 success with a 7 set to 1 win over Jeff Smith in the final, a surprisingly one-sided match. Scott Waites: back from darting wilderness through injury – and now champion again.

By 4 Paws Adoptions

For the 10th year running brave swimmers (22 of them) took to the sea in Carvajal from the Caribbean Bar on New Year’s Day for a good cause and pulled in the crowds to watch and help raise funds for 4 Paws Adoptions. More than 250 people attended the event which has become a firm traditional favourite on the Costa amongst the expatriate community. In its time 4 Paws Adoptions has managed to home many mistreated and abandoned animals destined for death row and from there giving them a second chance for a better life in their next forever homes. The ever growing New Year’s Day Swim attracts supporters to the Caribbean Bar in Carvajal where owners Simon and Dawn kindly host the event. This year 22 swimmers took part and as always the safety divers were in attendance who also took photos. Steve, Scott and Charles the owner of Into The Blue Diving School kept a keen eye on the swimmers.

KEY MOTOR Road Traffic Offences

Provided by n332.es

Below is a summary of some road traffic offences, together with the amount of the fine and points deducted from your licence as well as the reasoning behind each offence. Offence: Using Your Mobile Phone Whilst Driving Using your mobile phone when driving also carries a fine, even if you are holding it on “speaker”, you are still holding and using your mobile. You are also not allowed to wear any kind of headphone or headset. Even the popular single-ear Bluetooth headsets are not permitted when you are driving. You cannot have any headphones or headsets which go into your ear. The police, and others besides, communicate by Bluetooth headsets when they are patrolling on their motorbikes, but the difference is that these headsets are built into the helmet and do not go into the ears. This sort of integral device is permitted, but no others. Fine: 200 euro and the loss of 3 points Reason: Distractions are one of the main contributing factors to road traffic collisions. Using your mobile means that the driver’s attention is distracted from the most important function, driving the car. Even the distraction for a second can be deadly, when the vehicle is moving at the same time. Offence: Failing to Respect the Priority of Pedestrians Failing to respect the priority of pedestrians and the fact that pedestrians take precedence will result in a fine and, depending on the potential risk to those pedestrians, the loss of 4 points.

34

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

Fine: 200 euro Reason: Pedestrians are the most vulnerable of all road users. Facing a potential collision with a vehicle, the pedestrian will always come worse off, and so they need the most protection. Offence: Failing to Maintain a Safe Distance Driving behind a vehicle without maintaining the correct and safe distance (which does vary with weather and road conditions), will result in a fine and the loss of points. Fine: 200 euro fine and the loss of 4 points Reason: Driving too close to the vehicle in front reduces your reaction time and your overall stopping distance, thus making it more likely that you will collide with that vehicle if they have to react to something in front. Although there are mathematical calculations relating to the correct distance, always remember the 2 second rule and leave a 2 second time gap between you and the vehicle in front. To do this, find a fixed object ahead such as a sign or tree and count the time between the vehicle in front passing that point and the time you do. If you can´t time 2 seconds, at your normal speaking speed, say the phrase, “only a fool breaks the 2 second rule”, which takes about 2 seconds to say. In wet conditions, the gap should be at least doubled and considerably lengthened in the event of cold and icy conditions.

KEY MOTOR MOTO GP Makes Changes to Race Direction Role

The Moto GP season will start on 20th March and the following information was provided by http://m.crash.net/ motogp/news/226480/1/motogp-make-changes-to-racedirection.html on their website on 5th February 2016. “The first regulation changes in response to last year’s endof-season MotoGP controversy have been agreed. At a meeting of the Grand Prix Commission - comprising FIM, Dorna, MSMA and IRTA - it was decided that a new panel of stewards will be set up to rule on any rider punishments. This panel will not contain any members from Dorna, which is seeking to remove itself from the process. “After the incident of last year, we as Dorna decide not to be involved in the committee who put the penalties on the riders for any infringement of the sporting code during the race,” Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta told MotoGP.com. Instead the new panel will comprise of Race Director Mike Webb, plus two more stewards from the FIM. “We decided to separate the duties and tasks of Race Direction and the judges, the panel of stewards,” said FIM president Vito Ippolito. “We want to let Race Direction focus on managing the races because there are a lot of responsibilities and delicate matters to do. “We want to let them be free to manage the race but not to involve them anymore with the task of penalising riders. It needs more time and special dedication. “We will have the panel of stewards with three stewards; one will be the Race Director themselves because they will be there throughout the season and Grand Prix. It will be the current Race Director who is Mike Webb and two more stewards from the FIM. “One of them possibly also a permanent steward as we think with this structure, with this panel of stewards completely dedicated to judge the behaviour of riders during the races and practice, we can achieve a very high level of decisions.” MotoGP Race Direction is comprised of Mike Webb (IRTA), Franco Uncini (FIM) and Javier Alonso (Dorna), with Loris Capirossi as the riders’ representative and expert advisor. Although Ippolito’s comment that penalising riders “needs more time and special dedication” could be taken as suggesting mistakes have been made, sources within Race Direction are certain that the correct procedure and punishment was given following the Sepang incident between Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez.

By crashnet.com However, Dorna appears to have been stung by the insinuation that as a Spanish company, with one member inside Race Direction, they were in a position to influence the process for nationalistic reasons. Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo are indeed Spanish, but it is hard to see from a pure business perspective - Dorna holds the commercial rights to MotoGP - why Dorna would not prefer Valentino Rossi, the most famous motorcycle racer of all time, as world champion. Either way, those that work with Alonso insist he has never shown any sign of favouritism and adopts a calm, pragmatic approach inside Race Direction. The issue of perception aside, the new panel should increase the chances of a quick decision on any infringements and therefore more riders are likely to be punished during the actual race. The fact that Rossi’s punishment was served at the next (and final) grand prix is felt to have been a significant factor in the uproar. But it is a double-edged sword, since there is no chance to appeal a punishment once it has been served during a race, such as a ride-through or disqualification. The only time a regulation was judged to have been broken by Rossi or Marquez during the last three rounds of 2015 was when Rossi deliberately forced Marquez wide at Sepang. The incident ended with Marquez on the ground, but after a thorough post-race examination of the TV footage, plus interviews with both riders, Race Direction found no evidence to prove Rossi had kicked Marquez. However the relentless series of passes between the pair prior to the incident (and obvious tension following Rossi’s Thursday allegations that Marquez was assisting Lorenzo) was seen as unusual and taken into account in determining Rossi’s punishment. Race Direction’s decision was unanimous: Rossi was handed three penalty points, which resulted in a back of the grid start at the Valencia finale. The decision was later upheld by the FIM Stewards after Rossi’s Yamaha team lodged an appeal. Rossi went on to lose the title to team-mate Lorenzo. The whole saga, regardless of who was to blame, brought a bitter end to what had been a thrilling season, with Dorna and the FIM declaring that ‘changes would be made’ even before Valencia”.

KEY COMPUTERS Social Networking Scams Thanks to social networking sites, you can connect with friends, relatives, and even celebrities all over the world. The problem? You can also connect with a wide variety of cybercriminals who specialize in online hoaxes. Here is a short list of the most common types of social networking scams: 1. Hijacked Profile Scam Recently, a girl I’d gone to high school with suddenly sent me a message on Facebook that said, “Hey, if you get some time, will you give me a call?” I was immediately suspicious. We’re nothing more than mere acquaintances, and we’ve never once spoken on the phone. Though I figured her Facebook account had been hacked, I messaged her back and told her I couldn’t make long-distance phone calls. She responded by saying she had this wonderful business opportunity for me to get in on, and sent me a couple of links.

By Computer City

3. Suspicious Photo Scam This is one of the most common ways online con artists obtain login information to hijack an account. One of your friends, whose account has been hacked, posts a link on your page with a message such as, “OMG! Is this a naked picture of you?” This causes you to panic and you click the link, only to find yourself back at the Facebook login page. You figure it’s just one of Facebook’s many glitches and login again. By doing this, you’ve just disclosed your Facebook (or Twitter) account login information. Now, some cybercriminal is out there using your profile to attempt to scam your friends. If you see a suspicious link, simply delete it and send a message via email or text message to your friend to warn them they’ve been hacked.

At this point, I knew it was a scam. Her profile had obviously been hacked, but the scammer was attempting to be clever by using personal details in our conversation, such as where we went to school. I ended up deleting her from my friend’s list because I couldn’t get a hold of her to tell her she’d been hacked. 2. Quiz Scam It may be in your best interests to delete all app requests, and never take social networking quizzes. Turns out those “Which Twilight Character Are You?” quizzes could end up costing you a monthly charge. It starts out innocently enough: You see the quiz on your friend’s profile, click on it, and enter your cell phone number as instructed. The quiz pops up, you take it and find out you’re more an Alice than a Bella, and promptly post it on your profile for all of your friends to see and participate in. When next month rolls around, you’re shocked to learn that a 9.95 euros fee has been added to your cell phone bill for some dubious “monthly service.” Remember that the quiz asked you for your cell phone number in order for you to take it? You were so anxious to get the results that you didn’t even stop to wonder why they wanted it. Now you know.

Sterling may be falling but your clients can still save money compared to previous years. While the current GBP/EUR rate may not match the dizzy heights seen a few months ago, it’s important to put this into context, and consider what this really means compared to the rates seen over last few years. While currency market predictions are an uncertain science, what does seem likely is that these fluctuations will continue and sterling will weaken further – the complete opposite of the events seen in the market at this time last year, when sterling was strengthening.

To ensure your clients achieve the best possible rate, we recommend working with your Account Manager at Smart Currency so your clients can take advantage of a ‘forward contract’, which allows them to book the current rate now for a transfer in the next year. This means that they will know exactly how much they need to pay for this transfer when they make it, regardless of any further adverse currency movements that could lose them money.

KEY LAW New Communication on the Application of the Judgment of Safe Harbour In order to report directly to the “Responsible”(i.e. Data Protection Officers, DPOs) of companies involved in international transfers of personal data to the US and to the concern generated by the report titled “AEPD Ultimatum to Spanish companies: forbidden to use Dropbox or Google Apps?, the Spanish Protection Agency Data (AEPD) wants to point out the following: • The AEPD has not given any ultimatum to Spanish companies. The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) issued a judgment on 6th October that transfers (involving personal data) from the EU to the US cannot continue to be carried out, following the legal basis of the decision on the US Safe Harbour. • The Agency has already announced publicly on 29th October, in the framework of joint action of European data protection authorities, that it was to establish contact with all the companies that had recorded that they used Safe Harbour for making international transfers. That same day, the AEPD began sending a communication to these companies in order to facilitate direct communication with those responsible, by providing them adequate information channels. • The Agency has required in any case that companies stop using certain storage services in the cloud. Agency actions are not aimed at the prohibition on using specific tools but to inform companies to require a service provider, if necessary, that offers them a service appropriate to the CJEU ruling.

By Victoria Anzola – www.seqqe.com • The CJEU ruling is aimed at companies, not the citizens who make domestic use of personal data that might be stored in the cloud. • In the case of Spain, the time frame defined by European Data Protection authorities is concrete, where companies (DPO’s) report to the General Data Protection Register of the AEPD before the end of January on the continuity of transfers and their compliance with data protection regulations. The Agency has never announced its intention to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the companies in default. In the letter sent to those companies, the AEPD only indicates that in the failure to change the legal basis for personal data transfer, the Agency may initiate proceedings to agree, if necessary, temporary suspension of transfers. • The Agency, together with European data protection authorities, is committed to finding sustainable solutions to implement the CJEU ruling and is determined together with the EU Institutions, Member States and businesses to find a path to compliance with the judgment. In any event, companies (DPO’s) who have questions may raise your questions through Sede electrónica de la AEPD. https://www.agpd.es/portalwebAGPD/canalresponsable/ transferencias_internacionales/AplicacionSentenciaSHides-idphp.php.

There is also a variety of Biriyani dishes and several vegetable dishes available. Kid’s menu also available. I have had a small sample of some of a couple of dishes at Agra and the Bhindi Bhaji (Okra) was excellent as was the Onion Nan. Some Indian friends of mine gave it the thumbs up as did friends who were only here for a week on holiday but ate at Agra twice during their stay! Agra Curry House will reopen in March with the same, excellent chef.

THE LITTLE GERANIUM Shabby chic style bijou restaurant located right behind the Town Hall in La Cala, headed up by Michelin Star Chef and Fellow Master Chef, Steven Saunders, and Michele as front of house. Booking essential. Please see the advertorial on page 59 for more information on The Little Geranium, but here is what we thoroughly enjoyed from their evening tasting menu. After the “amuse bouche” there followed a Terrine of Wild Venison (not often on the menu in La Cala!), pressed with Duck, Confit Figs and Homemade Brioche (pictured above) and then a magnificent King Scallop sitting on top of Homemade Black Pudding adorned with some Caviar and a few Pomegranate Seeds. We were totally blown away with the quality of each course. Katty then poured a sauce (bisque) made from Lobster and Prawns around the scallop, simply sensational! For our main course we chose different dishes – my partner had the Galician Beef with Baby Vegetables, Red Wine Jus and Truffle and I (always keen to try something different and a lover of duck) chose the duck cooked ‘souvide’. Steven explained enthusiastically what ‘souvide’ meant; basically it helps make the meat more flavoursome by cooking it very slowly in a water bath at a low temperature. It was cooked on the rare side, served with fresh Cherry Glaze, Squash Puree, Garlic Confit and Truffled Cabbage. Each course looked like a work of art and tasted so heavenly! We wrapped up the evening with some aged Manchego Cheese and with it came a little glass of sweet wine they called ‘Music Tinto’. It was smooth and sweet and complemented the saltiness of the Manchego perfectly. All in all, a perfect evening and highly recommended. Booking details can be found on page 59. We welcome the Little Geranium back to Key to Mijas Costa.

There are also three RAFA Respite Care Homes in the UK that are jointly funded with the RAF Benevolent Fund. These provide much needed care and support to serving and ex-RAF personnel and their families as well as hotel accommodation for holiday breaks. The Costa del Sol Branch Welfare team are involved in many cases where ex-RAF personnel or their families require help with domiciliary or respite care, financial assistance or simply the use of mobility aids. If you or anyone you know requires welfare assistance, please contact our Welfare Officer on 952 567 412. Various social events are arranged during the year and for more information on these and in general, please visit the website - www.rafacostadelsol.co.uk.

KEY LAW New Law for Holiday Rentals Following legislation by other regional governments, on 11th February the Junta de Andalucía published the new law for holiday rentals of less than two months. Although there will not be any inspections for one year, the law comes into effect from 12th May, so before publishing any marketing for the property and taking rental bookings after that date, the new legislation has to be met. If using a travel agency or other means to advertise and secure a booking, then owners need to get a number by registering their property with the Tourism Department. This number then has to be shown on all advertising and bookings. The homeowner has to submit a declaration, confirming the property, contracts, prices and deposits comply with all the requirements of this law. Once submitted, the property can be rented out but it does intend to improve conditions in the holiday homes and maintain, at least, minimum standards. Requirements: • A licence of occupation • Compliance with technical requirements for construction • Ventilation to the outside and curtains or blinds to darken windows • Appropriate suitable furnishings and equipment • Air conditioning and heating and contracted mains services. All bedrooms and lounge must have air-conditioning units to provide cooling (if rented from May to September) and heating (if rented from October to April). Homeowners

It will ask for personal details, language spoken etc and can even locate you in an emergency via your mobile Android phone! Once validated, you can use it to alert robbery and theft, vandalism, physical attack, sexual aggression, female violence, radicalism, school bullying and even if you are lost. How cool is that? And for those going to England, there is a similar app called Panicguard which is described as ‘the definitive personal safety app to help prevent and fight crime’.

KEY FEATURE Processionary Caterpillars Apart from the earthquake, thunderstorm and torrential downpour, fog and winds, our winter has been extraordinarily mild. The generally unnatural warmth has encouraged those nasty little processionary caterpillars to come out of the pine trees early looking for a suitable place to bury themselves and metamorphosise into chrysalises and then come out in the summer as moths … and they are out in force! Many of you will know from personal experience that these caterpillars are an irritant to the human skin and can result in severe and unpleasant reactions but for our small children, cats and, especially dogs, they can prove fatal. Each caterpillar has some 500,000 hairs along the length of its body. They shed the hairs that are harpoon-shaped and break the skin releasing the toxic substances. Apart from causing a very unpleasant and itchy rash, to certain individuals it can affect their breathing or eyes. And because the wind can carry these hairs and spores, it is not just down to physical contact with the caterpillars! Dogs, by nature, are curious and will try to sniff or lick the caterpillars and it is not rare for dogs to lose part of their tongues or, in the worst cases, it can result in their death by asphyxiation

By Anne Hernández which is similar to anaphylactic shock. Some call it the worst annual plague in Spain and their singlefile processions can be seen for one or two months every year. They nest high in the pine trees so it is not always easy to spot the white cotton-like nests and treat them but the caterpillar’s bright yellow/orange colouring is an attraction to children who do not realise the dangers. In autumn, the nests in the pine trees should be treated (big Council fines if you cut the trees down) but once the caterpillars reach the ground there is little than can be done safely except to be aware and extremely cautious. Many home remedies abound, spray with hairspray then set alight to them, pour paraffin, oil, alcohol or petrol onto them etc but, because of the dangers, no professional would ever advise any amateur dealing with them so seek professional help and get them dealt with properly. If you or your child has been in contact with them, go to the doctor for an antihistamine treatment. If you dog has been in contact, take him to the vet immediately although you can help by washing his mouth out with warm water but quick action is the key to the treatment.

KEY NEWS ALEGRIA AID Most animal-lovers here in Mijas Costa

will have heard of Mary Locke Burgess and many say she is an angel on earth! Mary was so touched by the plight of the abandoned and mistreated animals here she set about personally rescuing them and now has over 70 dogs roaming her land and 8 rescue horses sharing her horse farm at Finca Alegría. Mary came to Spain nearly 30 years ago, and, after much personal sadness, decided to dedicate her life to helping as many of the abandoned animals as possible. Mary rarely asks for anything (but never refuses anything either!) and has spent virtually all her life’s savings on the feeding and vet fees of her ‘fur babies’. She even manages to help rescue centres with bedding and their pleas for help to foster or adopt the animals in their care and says she keeps in touch with all of those she has managed to home wherever they may be – UK, Finland or Sweden. She is one busy lady and credits her tireless energy to her dogs. ‘I don’t have time to sit back and ‘retire’, there is still so much work to do!’ she said. The daily costs of food alone is in excess of 60 Euros (not counting the generous donations of dog biscuits) and with just a meagre pension to manage on now, she has opened a charity shop in Playa Marina which she is working in alone from 10.30 till 13.00 Monday to Friday. Mary is eternally grateful to everybody who has donated unwanted items but would love to hear from anybody who could spare just a couple of hours a week to help in the shop. This is one lady with a huge heart; her title of ‘angel on earth’ is well deserved! You can email her on playamarina@jet.es. Please see main ad on page 31.
