Welcome to the April issue of Key to Mijas Costa. Still a bit murky outside for the time of year as I was writing this and also Easter, coming early, was a bit quiet. However, businesses are now gearing up for the peak season and as well as airlines putting on more flights to Malaga for the summer months, it looks as though La Cala is now becoming very trendy and the preferred place to settle on the Costa del Sol and is this issue we have plenty for you to do in La Cala and the surrounding areas. It is that time of year to shake off all the winter excesses, including nasty viruses that have plagued us this winter. On page 17 Dr Robert Zawislak of Your Doctor at Home shares his vast experience and passion of more than 30 years treating the body and mind of his clients by both traditional and homeopathic means. KEY FEATURE Ideas
By Ali Meehan, Costa Women
Spring is here and it may be the best time of year to get things done, have new ideas and be creative. One of my new ideas for 2016 is an Ideas Box. We all have ideas for our businesses and things we want to achieve – one day. I recently read “Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear”. Elizabeth Gilbert, the author (of Eat, Pray, Love fame) stresses that ideas are available to all of us. However if we don’t use them someone else will! “Ideas are alive, that ideas do seek the most available human collaborator, that ideas do have a conscious will, that ideas do move from soul to soul, that ideas will always try to seek the swiftest and most efficient conduit to the earth (just as lightning does).” - Elizabeth Gilbert, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
Since January, I have been writing down odd ideas and projects that I think I might like to do at some point in the future. These are written onto a scrap of paper and put into a box on my desk for my planning day. Once a month, I set aside a day for planning. On that day, the Pandora’s box of ideas is opened and I start to schedule some of the ideas into the coming month, or next few quarters. What ideas and projects have you wished for your business that you can achieve in the coming days, months and years. Don’t forget to write them down and start planning how you will make these ideas and projects reality. So this, I believe, is the central question upon which all creative living hinges: Do you have the courage to bring forth the treasures that are hidden within you?” - Elizabeth Gilbert, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear

KEY HEALTH Dental Implants
By Dr Belinda, Sonrisa
What is a “Dental Implant”? A dental implant is actually a replacement for the root or roots of a tooth. They are used to secure crowns, bridgework or dentures. They are made of titanium, which means that it is not rejected by the body. What are the Options for Implant Tooth Replacement? 1. Single Tooth Replacement
10
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
2. Fixed MultipleTooth Replacement: They can attach to custom-made crowns or bridgework to restore a few teeth or all your teeth, giving you the feeling of having your own natural teeth. 3. “Click System” for dentures over Implants: If all of your lower teeth are missing, depending on the design of the removable restoration, two to four implants may be used to support a lower denture. A new denture can have attachments that snap or clip it into place on the implants. For more information book your consultation at “Sonrisa, British Dental Clinic”. Dr. Belinda will help you to find the treatment that suits you and that will fulfil your expectations.

KEY HEALTH Is the Internet a Reliable Source of Information for Health?
By Medicare
It’s been said that 70 to 80% of healthcare is self-care. But when healthcare turns to medical care - when disease arrives - it requires information most of us don’t have. Today, ordinary people can find information online that they could never reach before. So smart web users are increasingly becoming e-patients: empowered, engaged, equipped and enabled. Recent reports suggest that 80% of online adults turn to the Web for health advice and information, and one in four chronic-disease patients goes online to find others like themselves. It makes sense: We go online to learn about far less important things, so it’s natural to do so when a family member’s health is at stake. Clearly, people are learning to find what they need online, the problem is, how do you filter the gold from the garbage? Answer: turn to professionals. This suggests that “paging Dr. Google” doesn’t replace professionals, it supplements them. Beware, not everyone online is trustworthy; it is suggested that up to 50% of medical/healthcare information online is unreliable. So yes, feel free to research your family’s health—after all, whose health is it? Just be smart about it. The same as with anything you do online. Inform yourself, think and verify: never trust just one type of source. The Internet user’s first responsibility is to learn which websites are the most trustworthy. Sometimes the answer is obvious: the NHS direct site will give you more reliable, evidence-based information about the flu than the blogs of flu sufferers trying out novel treatments. But the reliability question does not always have an obvious answer. Some patient-based
websites (e.g. patients.co.uk) are excellent sources of information about the experiences of patients with complex medical conditions. Meanwhile, some sites that at first seem to be simply informative are advancing the agenda of a commercial enterprise. For example, depression.com, despite its innocent-sounding domain name, is anything but innocent. A few clicks will take you to a description of depression as a neuro-chemical dis-order that might respond well to medication. The makers of the antidepressants Paxil and Wellbutrin sponsor the site. Source reliability isn’t the only thing that Web users have to be careful about. Some symptom checkers (Webmd.com) are often more alarming than empowering; online consultations with unknown “experts” (Justanswer.com) can lengthen, rather than shorten, the process of finding answers to medical questions and the fact is that even good information isn’t helpful if you don’t know how to interpret it or how to use it for good decision-making. A study done for Microsoft in 2008 demonstrated that online health-information seekers tend to “catastrophise”: a person Googling “headache” is more likely to follow links to “brain tumour” than to “sinus infection.” We should be informed about health maintenance and illness prevention, and we should learn as much as we can about our own chronic conditions, but we need to do it sensibly. KEY HEALTH Feel Re-energised Naturally Do you find yourself struggling to stay awake in the evening or to get out of bed in the morning? Does a 3pm energy slump sound familiar and do you rely on caffeine or sugary snacks for an energy boost throughout the day? There is a more natural way to feel energised – a vitamin-like substance called coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), which is needed by all our cells as part of their energy mechanism. CoQ10 has gone from being a relatively unknown substance to many people’s secret to more vitality. While small quantities can be found in some foods, most is manufactured within our bodies. Our ability to produce CoQ10 peaks at around age 20 and tapers off with age, creating a need to top up our levels. Natural CoQ10 levels are also depleted by intense physical exercise, chronic disease and certain medications such as cholesterol-lowering statins. Understanding the Health Benefits CoQ10 has been described as an ‘age-reversing’ nutrient, capable of strengthening our muscles, improving heart health and sustaining energy levels as we age. In fact, Dr Peter Langsjoen, fellow of the American Journal of Cardiology, said “If you take only one supplement, make it CoQ10.” It’s no surprise that as the hardest working muscle in the body, the heart has a high energy requirement and contains larger concentrations of CoQ10 than cells in other tissues. Cardiovascular disease remains the single biggest killer in the UK, accounting for more than one quarter of all deaths. In cases of heart failure CoQ10 levels in the heart drop, causing an energy shortage that prevents the heart muscle from contracting with its usual force. This causes shortness of breath and chest pain. CoQ10 works by increasing the energy turnover in heart muscles and has been shown to improve survival in people with heart failure, as well as the elderly.
By Pharmanord “Two of my four grand children live a four hour drive from home and I wanted to have the energy to visit as much as possible. The problem was that I often felt tired and lacked the energy to keep up with my hectic lifestyle.” Travelling four hours to babysit seemed like climbing a mountain and of course, Elaine needed the energy to play with the children when she arrived. Either something in Elaine’s life needed to change or she needed to find a new source of energy. That is when she heard about coenzyme Q10 and she has never looked back. “I have always tried to lead a healthy lifestyle, eating well and exercising, so I could cope with my busy routines. Although sometimes it would be hard to resist caffeine and sugary snacks if I felt I needed a boost. I thought there must be a more natural way which is when I discovered Bio-Quinone Q10 in my local health food shop. I had only heard of Q10 in skin creams and didn’t realise it was so vital for energy production. Elaine takes one 100 mg capsule of Bio-Quinone Q10 per day and describes it as her ‘fuel for daily life.’ “Since taking Q10 I feel like my life is without limits. I can enjoy everything to the full and run around after my grandchildren. This was something I previously found hard after a long drive.” For more information visit www.q10.co.uk .
The Science Increasingly research points to CoQ10 as a nutrient with a huge impact on human health. Like all supplements, the raw material must be effectively absorbed and used by your body for the benefits to be experienced. This is called bio-availability and should be considered when choosing a supplement. Dr David Mantle, nutritional adviser at Pharma Nord explains, “Q10 raw material consists of molecules assembled in large orange crystals. They cannot be absorbed by the intestine in this form and do not dissolve in water and only slightly in oil. As a result, Q10 powder mixed with oil or dry powder-based supplements provide minimal to no absorption. Look for a supplement where the Q10 crystals are broken down into single molecules and dissolved in oil for best absorption.” Life without limits Elaine, 55, is a busy working grandmother, faced with the demands of child care and caring for an elderly mother, all while working a three day week. She wanted to keep living life to the full but found her energy levels were low. KMG - FOR ALL YOUR PRINTING NEEDS - TEL 666 666 998 - 952 934 805

KEY HEALTH Classical Homeopathy ¨In homoeopathy we treat the whole person in disease helping the body-mind unity heal itself in a natural, safe, quick and delicate way¨ - Dr. Robert Tadeusz Zawislak Zarzycki I am medical doctor who recently moved to Spain from Poland, having spent more than 30 years in private general practice based on natural medicine, promoting a healthy life style and prophylaxis. I had especially chosen homeopathy as I feel that it is the most flexible, natural, delicate, efficient and safe method of supporting human health. My first contact with homoeopathy occurred in1980 during the course of my medical studies at the Medical Faculty of Jagiellonian University in Cracow, from where I was graduated in 1983. As a physician, I had a very wide range of interests in different medical systems and treatment methods due to my innate curiosity. From herbal medicine, iridology, traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda and Tibetan medicine, medical radiesthesia, radionics, reflexotherapy and physiotherapy, to anthroposophical medicine and homoeopathy. As I mentioned before, the latter, namely homeopathy, had focused my attention and has dominated my medical practice for the last thirty years. I was learning, popularising, teaching and practicing this method of treatment in Poland as, for many years, I was involved as the president of the Little Poland Association of Homeopathic Physicians in different activities - as an organiser, advisor, lecturer, teacher and practicing physician. I have always been curious about the real cause of disease, health problems and suffering of my fellow human beings and had collected many useful answers about WHY & HOW. Working individually with the person in need, I consciously do not use the term “patient”, because in reality each one is an active co-creator of his own life, not just a passive receiver. So being a doctor I am more like a detective and coach, than omnipotent judge and ruler, who makes a statement of a fixed diagnosis and adjusts the cure, rather than a sentence of some years in jail. This kind of approach gives the possibility to solve many more problems and helps the individual to grow, develop and evolve to a better level of health and well-being. Homeopathy is a much personalised form of medicine. It stimulates individual homeostasis of the whole organism and in its specific diagnostic process takes into account the intellectual, psychic and emotional features of a person along with one’s biological make-up and actual disease symptoms. It tends to recognise individual characteristics of a person who is ill – it means ¨the person in disease process¨. By this method of treatment, a homeopathic physician works with his patient in search of a unique reactivity type manifested by a specific constellation of signs generated by the person in disease. All this
By Dr. Robert Tadeusz Zawislak Zarzycki essential data is obtained by observation, asking open, general and specific questions, medical examination and medical tests. Homeopathic remedies are micro-dosed substances derived from different sources: minerals, plants, animals, any synthetic chemical substances or even physical agents such as an x ray, radiation or electric current. A specific homeopathic remedy is obtained by a precise and controlled process of successive “dilute and shake.” Thus the original substance is gradually being decentralised and therefore, this process potentises and transforms the original therapeutically inactive substance into potent medicine. Homeopathy has its limits, too. For example, we cannot treat psychosis or organic diseases with irreversible tissue changes or irreversible results of injuries, but we can stimulate the natural defence forces. It is highly indicated in cases of exhaustion or extreme physical weakness, as it strengthens our natural resources. To get the best results, avoid self-medication – stay in touch with your doctor.

KEY HEALTH What is Lymphoedema?
By Patricia Kaines
Lymphoedema is a swelling that develops as a result of an impaired lymphatic system. This may be due as a result of the lymphatic system not developing properly or through damage or trauma to the lymph vessels thereby preventing them to drain the body’s tissues sufficiently. It can affect any part of the body but is most commonly found in the limbs. A recent study has estimated that at least 240,000 people in the UK may be affected by this condition. Unfortunately I do not have any figures for Spain. Regular readers will know that I have often written about the lymphatic system in the past, also known as the waste disposal system of the body, and how passionate I am about the subject! There are two types of lymphoedema:Primary Lymphoedema – This is congenital, from birth and is usually due to the under-development and/or failure of the lymph vessels. Primary lymphoedema can be hereditary. It can also manifest itself without any obvious cause at different stages in life: *Lymphoedema praecox - during puberty, especially in girls. It can develop very quickly. *Lymphoedema tardum – this develops around the age of 35 years and over. This is found in both men and women. Secondary Lymphoedema – This is the result of a problem outside of the lymphatic system that prevents it from working properly, most often from one of the following:
18
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
*Surgery – especially when lymph nodes have been removed during treatment for cancer. *Radiotherapy – this kills the cancer/tumour cells, but it can cause scar tissue that interrupts the flow of lymph. *Accidental trauma/injury or infection that may damage the lymph vessels and in turn reduces lymph drainage. *Reduced mobility/paralysis. *Problems with veins not working properly, normally due to varicose veins or after a DVT. *Obesity. *Cancer. Unfortunately, most of the underlying causes of lymphoedema are irreversible and as such, there is currently no known cure. However, appropriate treatment such as Manual Lymphatic Drainage and the wearing of compression garments can be implemented to reduce the swelling and keep it to a minimum. *The above information is also available from the Lymphatic Support Network (LSN). I have recently seen an increase in the number of clients coming to see me for either oedema (a lesser form of lymphoedema) and lymphoedema. If you have any concerns and would like further information please contact me at Clinica Medicare in La Cala on 952 835 776 or call me directly on 666 170 868.

KEY HEALTH Tasty Vegetarian Meals Previously, like a lot of young men, I had a very poor diet. I was the type of person that would drink loads of sugary drinks, goods from the bakery and meat. About three years ago I took up a vegetarian cooking class that changed my way of looking at food. I got to learn how to cook better options of food that still taste good! What I learned was that vegetarian food is knowing how to season your vegetables. That’s why I subsequently took up a nutritionist course - to learn how the body works, what it needs and how to supply it with the right nutrients to keep it in good health. I suggest you start gently and then expand your taste buds! The first thing is that it would be a good idea to add juicing or blending to your diet, which is a great way to add the 7-aday vegetables and fruit that is recommended by any doctor to keep your body health. Why not try mixing a combination of fruit and vegetables? For example, you could add some spinach, 6 strawberries, a cup of water, tsp. maca powder, tsp. Organic Super Mix (it’s made of chlorella, spirulina, barley grass and wheatgrass). You might also want to add a banana or kiwi fruit to taste. The super mix is great for those with an underactive thyroid. It will activate your metabolism thanks to the iodine as well as detoxify your body from the inside from heavy metals and toxins that we absorb from pollution and other contaminents which need a little help to expel them from the body. Another thing we should all try is to add more raw vegetables to our diet. The reason for this is to achieve great enzymes, vitamins, and phytonutrients from your vegetables, that will make your body thrive, not just survive. Here is a very simple, but tasty vegetarian recipe.
By Jon Stark Raw Courgette Pasta with Bolognaise Sauce Ingredients Pasta: 1 courgette spiralised in a Spiromat Bolognaise Sauce: 1 tsp Coconut Virgin Extra Oil 1Onion, diced 3 Garlic Cloves, crushed 4 Sun-dried Tomatoes, thinly sliced 1 Red Pepper (2 if small), thinly sliced 4 Fresh Tomatoes, diced 1 cup Natural Cashew Nuts, blended 1 tsp. Himalayan Pink Salt 2 tbsp. Oregano 1 and a half tbsp Cumin Powder ½ tsp. Black Pepper 200ml Tomato Sauce (approx) ½ Cup Water (if necessary) First prepare the Bolognaise, add the coconut oil to a pan with the onion, garlic and red pepper. Fry it all in the pan until it starts to get soft. Add the spices and the sun dried tomatoes. Let it cook slowly. Next add the fresh diced tomatoes and cook for a little longer. Once almost cooked, add the cashews and let it soak up the moisture. Now add the tomato sauce and, if needed, the water. The Bolognaise sauce should be nice and thick. Tip Personally, I like to pass over the Bolognaise sauce with a hand blender and then pulse through it all to make it smooth and creamy. KEY HOLISTIC The Love Affair between Human & Divine The love affair between my Human and Divine selves that I write about in my book Your Magnificent Self… A Journey to Freedom continues to unfold when I meet another Elemental Being, Jeremy. In fact it is Jeremy that paints a most magnificent picture of how consciousness from the Cosmos comes down to meet the consciousness of Mother Earth and in their ‘coming together’ their raw primal energies transform into ONE life force energy that nurtures all life on Earth. It is this life force energy that can be felt within our physical body and mind, vibrating anew with each breath we breathe. Waiting for the Human heart to awaken to the Divine embrace, to come together and know that they are, infinite potential flowing through the Magnificent MasterCreator who creates heart and soul desire on the physical plane and far beyond. Jeremy urges everyone to find plenty of quiet me-time in which to feel, listen and observe the Divine energies within and outside of self that continually dance and flow, through the Earth, the Heavens and all life, waiting patiently for the Human self to respond to their loving embrace. Jake comes to help us understand how important it is to accept and embrace All of Self, the fears and pains, the broken and forgotten parts and to allow them to come back home and integrate into one Body Consciousness (Body, Mind & Spirit). KEY HOLISTIC NEW: J.O.Y. Sound of Yoga
By Christine Heckel
Yoga combined with different Sound Media (Sound Bowls, Gongs and Mantras) Yoga is a 5000 year old Indian body of knowledge including a holistic exercise system - now well known and practiced by many people. Nevertheless some people might think of seemingly impossible and weirdly twisted poses when thinking of Yoga. With Sound Yoga this might change! Here Sound and Yoga come together - a wonderful experience and a special highlight! This is yoga full of joy for the body, soul, and spirit combining sound (singing) bowls, gongs and mantras with Asanas (yoga poses). Using Sound Yoga does give yoga classes more depth and allows the participants to let go easily. Various sound bowls, gongs and mantras are used for different Asanas in order to produce harmonising, balancing and energising sound vibrations. These sound vibrations allow a deep muscle relaxation and help to release tension and blockages in the physical body as well as the subtle energy field of a person. Our own primordial sound in all our tissues, muscles, bones, organs, lymph and nerves is awakened in its depth by the sounds of the sound bowls and gongs. Indwelling life energy in each of our cells is brought into vibration producing a sensual experi-
ence. The deep relaxing effect of yoga Asanas may be intensified using singing bowls and the healing frequencies of the richness in harmonic sounds may reach deeply into the fascia. A sensation of security and safety is created. Letting go and regeneration in the entire organisms happens almost by itself. In Sound Yoga singing bowls are not only used for meditation but do find an active part in yoga classes. Singing bowls are special instruments with a relaxing rhythm (beat), a healing, enchanting sound space for relaxation. It is important to use instruments which intensively connect us with our own inner rhythm. The sounds of the singing bowls make deep contact with all of our cells. KEY HOLISTIC When is a Crystal more than just a Crystal? Years ago, I was gifted what looked like a coloured stone. Each day, I would take it out of my pocket and simply hold it. Without knowing why, I felt drawn to placing it into my hands whenever I had a moment to myself. A few weeks after receiving this gift, I was enjoying a chat and a coffee with a friend. She’d brought along her eight-year-old daughter, Abbey, who played alongside us. I reached into my pocket and held my new stone for a few moments before placing it onto the table. No sooner had it touched the tabletop and Abbey sprang to action. She flew around our table and reached for the stone. There was an immediate change in Abbey’s energy. She went from rushing around to sitting contently as she held onto this stone. Her eyes were fixated on it. Both her Mum and I were amused by Abbey’s interest in the stone. We continued chatting while Abbey sat quietly in a state of peace and stillness. Getting up to leave, my friend asked her daughter to return the stone to me. Instantly I saw a look of panic on this little angel’s face; a realisation that the bond she enjoyed with this stone would be broken. I looked into her green eyes asking, “Abbey, do you like this stone?” “Oh yes!” she replied, enthusiastically. “Then, my little angel, it belongs with you!” I replied, with a smile on my face, “It will keep you happy and protect you and help you to become stronger than a lion!” What I didn’t know was that those words and the stone would change Abbey’s life forever. A few days later, I received a call from Abbey’s Mum. She wanted to share some news with me about Abbey. She started to tell me about Abbey and the tremendous challenges that she’d been going through at that time. Abbey was being bullied at school and her teacher was quite hard on her. A gentle and loving soul, Abbey’s sensitivity was also causing a tremendous level of stress. She suffered from night terrors and for four months had been waking up, screaming and terrified. I was heartbroken to hear what Abbey had been dealing with and asked if there was anything I could do.

“Mark, you have already done it!” she replied. I was confused by her response as I hadn’t given Abbey a healing session. “Mark, the stone you gifted to Abbey? I can tell you that from that very moment she never let it go. Day and night, that stone is with Abbey - in her pocket, in her hand, next to her on the table while she eats. My husband and I noticed a change within Abbey. She’s coming home from school, singing in the car! She’s watching TV again and even happy before going to sleep. She’s so relaxed once the stone is by her side and so much the Abbey we know and love. The other day, I screamed to my husband in excitement that Abbey had slept right through the night! It’s the first time in ages she slept through and she hasn’t woken in the night since from night terrors. We’re now able to slowly decrease her medication with the full support of our doctor. We’re overjoyed and cannot thank you enough.” I asked Abbey’s Mum if they’d done anything else differently? Change in diet or medication? “Absolutely nothing,” she replied. My life changed that day and I set about learning all about these beautiful stones that I soon came to know and love as healing crystals. I now teach people from all around the world about Crystals. I love working with them and know they are one of the more powerful memory-stores of energy on the planet. I spend many hours working with the crystals in my academy, placing positive, healing energy into each one of them. Most of my crystals hold over 50 hours of healing energy. Once happy with the energy that a crystal holds, I gift many of them to people in need of a helping hand. If I place a crystal on my Facebook page for sale, almost every one finds a home in less than 10 minutes; such is the powerful energy within these beautiful, healing crystals. I often think about Abbey and smile knowing that even one little crystal can change a life and clear away darkness. You never know that one day you could just find yourself looking down at a crystal as it calls to you. You see, as is their magic, you don’t really choose a crystal; it is the crystal that chooses you. MARK BAJERSKI Founder of Pure Energy Healing Pure Energy Healing Academy www.markbajerskicom

KEY FEATURE Ever Changing World In the summer of 2015, composer, artist and writer, Dario Poli, received a communication from Florence Olara of The Hague Justice Portal introducing herself to him and inquiring if he could be interested in writing a new musical composition, especially for the Peace, Justice and Security Foundation. Her friendly but professional manner of conversing with him, created a good impression and an immediate bond was established. She informed him that she was creating a special gala event that would assemble international and Dutch celebrities and personalities from genres such as film, music, sports, business, and international justice, politics, NGO’s, society and local communities etc. to celebrate and promote the theme of peace, justice and security in The Hague, the city of peace, justice and security. Hearing the details and realising it was an ambitious plan and exciting event, Dario accepted the challenge and readily agreed. She arranged for Dario to attend the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN held at the Peace Palace in The Hague, where he was introduced to officials and personalities. As it was such an important task, Dario decided that for this special gala event, he would bring in the best professionals he knew to help create the new song. He firstly wrote the music but to write the lyrics, he brought in the locally well-known and talented Scottish musician, David Mairs, the co–author with Dario, of “Amsterdam the Musical” and much more, as well as being his favourite lyric writer. David, hearing Dario’s new music, wrote a brilliant text to match the music that eloquently evokes the spirit of the song and the inspiration of the Foundation entitled “Ever Changing World.” Dario at this point decided that the new song for the foundation would require a different level of musical expression, with English vocals and recording standards. So he contacted his long-time friend and renowned British musical director, David Redston, whose association goes back to the 1970’s, when David worked with Dario as his musical director, conductor and arranger. Their careers took them in different directions for many years, until they reunited to collaborate on “Diana - the Musical” in the 1990’s. David Redston has had a long and illustrious career in music, working non-stop as a composer, arranger, and conductor.

When approached by Dario to work on the Justice, Peace and Security Foundation project, David jumped at the opportunity to work with his old friend once more. When “Ever Changing World” was written, David was a natural choice as his vast experience and theatrical flair enabled him to combine many different influences into one fantastically dramatic song. As David explains: “When I first heard the song, I knew I wanted to work on the project. It is such an inspiring and uplifting piece of Music, that we feel truly reflects the values and aspirations of the Gala.” On Learning that the Foundation was also looking for an original painting, Dario contacted two of the most creative talents in Andalucía, Mugge Fischer from Denmark and Ose del Sol, a Spanish painter from Marbella, the joint owners of Grupo Artenovum. They wrote to Florence. “For many years we have worked closely together with Dario Poli on many projects, and most recently “Amsterdam the Musical”. The world is ever changing and moving, and so are we. And we are so pleased to have been asked to be a part of yet another project together with Dario. This time for something that we all dream for: Peace and Justice. So when we were contacted by Florence Olara from The Peace and Justice Foundation who asked us to be part of the process, in our field – ART, we took about 1 second to say...”Yes, Dear Florence... off course we will”. So we are right now working on a painting, which is going to be a magnificent work of art, for a great cause in which we are proud to be participating...peace and justice in an ever changing world”. Mugge & Ose. The final connection that Dario was able to present to Florence, was the talents of respected International Dutch artist Ernst Kraft living in Spain, who after contact with Florence, worked day and night for several months to produce a special book on children titled “When the Beast Awakens.” creating all characters and illustrating the original images. Ernst is the creator of the charming published children’s book “Paco Pulpito y Matamoscas.” Dario Poli, David Mairs, David and Joe Redston, Mugge Fischer, Ose del Sol and Ernst Kraft are now looking forward to arriving in the beautiful city of The Hague sometime in September to present their creative efforts to a selected audience that Florence Olara and her team have gathered for the exclusive gala event and an important part of this, will be the first live public performance of the song “Ever Changing World.”

KEY SPORTS Open Darts and FA Cup 5th Round 2016 UK Open Darts - Butlins, Minehead A three-day tournament taking place between 4th and 6th March. Highlights of the opening day were 170 check-outs by Jamie Caven and Michael Van Gerwen. Rob Cross of Hastings round 3 encounter with Michael Van Gerwen was described as ‘Like Bristol Rovers and Man United in the FA Cup.’ Temp worker, Barry Lynn, found himself up against Gary Anderson and jokingly said pre-match that he would ‘bash him around the board.’ Two very interesting ties. Bazza’s Run – The first ever Pub Qualifier into the Quarter Finals Van Gerwen prevailed against Cross 9-5 including a 9-dart finish but after surprisingly beating Gary Anderson 9-3, Lynn then overcame Stuart Kellett 9-5 with a check-out of 125, bullseye, 25, bullseye to move into the quarters – the first ever pub qualifier into the quarter finals. Ex postie, Joe Cullen, beat Stephen Bunting 9-7 to move into a major televised quarter final for the first time while Phil Taylor won a brisk, entertaining match with Vincent Van Der Voort by 9-7 with a bullseye finish. Peter Wright edged Cullen to move into the semis while a still game Barry Lynn went down 6-10 to Michael Van Gerwen, ‘I’ll smash you next time,’ he chuckled. Phil Taylor coasted past Mark Webster 10-3 to set up a highly anticipated semi-final with Van Gerwen. The first half of the match was very nip and tuck at 5-5 but Van Gerwen pulled away winning the next four legs. Taylor hit a double 18 and double 16 finish to make it 6-9 but went down 6-10 Van Gerwen finishing on 25. Taylor had at one point been 4-1 up. Snakebites the Cobra ‘Why is Peter Wright called Snakebite?’ remarked an observer as he cheerfully jigged on in his now familiar warm-up routine. Wright took the early initiative and at the half way

stage led 5-2. Jelle Klaesen though, and not for the first time in the tournament, did not look happy with the crowd. Klaesen closed to 5-6 hitting double 1 but then Wright pulled away again closing out the match 10-5 with a 125 check-out. The final was, like last year, between Peter Wright and Michael Van Gerwen. Wright runnered up a major final for the sixth time going down 4-11. Chelsea v Manchester City - FA Cup 5th Round A very entertaining and attacking first half, a pinpoint Fabregas cross and Diego Costa headed Chelsea in front. Within the minute, Manchester City were level, 19 year old David Faupala on his first start scrambling the ball home. Chelsea should have taken the lead when Fabregas crossed again but Pedro’s snap shot was palmed away by Willy Caballero. He should have buried it. A quick Chelsea break forward found Hazard and his ball through was buried by Willem from an acute angle to give Chelsea the lead. Then Fernando didn’t properly clear and Gary Cahill smashed home the rebound to put Chelsea 3-1 up after a deep cross by Fabregas had been hit back in by Hazard. Hazard’s low free-kick found its way through the wall past an unsighted goalkeeper. The free-kick was OK but not great and the goalkeeper was badly out of position, comically shuffling the other way. Cahill took another flailing arm, blood had earlier poured from his nose following a clash in a headed challenge. Traore was ‘fouled’ by Argentine defender Dumacello on 74 minutes but Oscar’s penalty was palmed away by Caballero. A very unorthodox header by Traore found its way in at the far post with Caballero again hopelessly out of position. Chelsea moved into the quarter-finals with a 5-1 win over Manchester City. John Terry, surprisingly, did not make an appearance on the park at the final whistle although Joe Hart did.

KEY PETS The Name you can Trust
By Joanna the Dog Groomer
It’s that time of year again when dog groomers like myself see an influx of dogs coming in to be shaved now that the warmer weather is on its way. This brings me to this month’s topic – shaving – where I will cover some basic advice on this issue such as: • The benefits of shaving • When not to shave • Why your dog was shaved shorter than you wanted Benefits Cooler, comfort, to control fleas and ticks, less brushing needed, improve skin conditions, for dogs that enjoy swimming, for style of breed. When not to shave Dogs that suffer from clipper itch, that have very pink skin with lots of moles, breeds that should not be shaved. I will go into more details here: Certain breeds, for example Chow Chow, German Shepherds, Labradors and Collies that have thick undercoats are not best suited to being shaved unless (a) it is for health reasons or (b) their owners are committed to having them shaved 2-4 times a year. Shaving these types of breed damages the fur and more often than not, results in a coat which grows back much thicker, sometimes of a different texture and rarely, a different colour. So, if owners do choose to have these breeds shaved, they should be made aware that their dogs may need to be shaved every 2-6 months every year for the rest of their lives. For owners who are concerned that their long-coated dogs are overheating, I advise them to ask a groomer to access the dog’s coat and advise on which route is best suited for both owner and dog. As a German Shepherd owner myself, I know that the down sides of owning this beautiful breed is full-time moulting all year round. However, it is possible to keep these breeds cool, comfortable and reduce moulting by learning to remove their undercoats or taking them to a professional
34
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
groomer 2-4 times a year. Shaving off these breeds is a quick fix that is misunderstood and only suitable for owners who understand fully the pros and cons. Why sometimes there is no option and why your dog was shaved shorter Every dog groomer will agree they want to groom every dog like the breed looks at Crufts, so that when you walk your dog, people stop you and ask “Where did you get your dog groomed?” or “amazing haircut”. It’s the best advertisement we can get rather than “Oh my God – which groomer did THAT”? I am sure you can appreciate that this is not the sort of advertising we need. Knots and matting are simply painful and I hope no groomer would put a dog through discomfort and pain just to please the owner. Knots and matting limited to a small area can be cut out but for dogs that are knotted or matted all over, sometimes shaving is the only option as the dog’s welfare should be the groomer’s prime concern. The length of the coat that remains is left down to the size of the blade that cuts through the fur, or if not possible, that cuts under the matting, so the closer the knots or matting are to the skin, the shorter the blade. Sometimes it is best to also consider a very tight shave if your dog suffers with overheating, you are unable to bring your dog for more regular haircuts and want the cut to last many months, the dog has a skin complaint (shaving often helps), your dog has a serious flea or tick infection or you are unable to brush your dog. Preventing Knots or Matting Research your dog’s breed, their coats and how best to care for him/her. Do some research on the internet; watch videos of how best to groom the breed, what equipment to buy etc. Remember your dog’s coat and skin have a huge impact on both their mental and physical health and both coat and skin problems are the leading cause of discomfort in every breed of dog.

KEY MOTOR UK Driving Licences
By n332.es/N332 Facebook Page
I reproduce here the information kindly provided by n332. es which is a group of Guardia Civil Trafico in the hope that this will help clarify the position. Please like their Facebook page to obtain up to date information in English on all matters relating to motoring in Spain. “We have received a number of questions regarding an article posted by the CAB (Citizen’s Advice Bureau) in Spain which states “Drivers with Valid UK Driving Licences Fined Illegally”. In view of the number of questions received, we have visited our associates from the Guardia Civil Trafico who run the N332 Facebook page in order to help to solve the doubts that article has generated. Question 1. Can I be fined if I have a VALID UK driving licence? YES, if you are RESIDENT and your licence complies with one of these two cases: The holder of a European driving licence with an INDEFINITE DURATION or GREATER than 15 YEARS (or five years in the case of group permissions 2) with legal residence in Spain acquired on January 19, 2013 or before that date – You must renew your driving licence from January 19, 2015. The holder of a European driving licence with an INDEFINITE DURATION or GREATER than 15 YEARS (or five years in the case of group permissions 2) with legal residence in Spain obtained dated after January 19, 2013 – You must renew your driving licence from the moment two years of residence in Spain has been met. NO, if you are a holiday maker. In conclusion, having a Valid European Driving Licence does not mean that you cannot be fined. It sounds rare, we know, but the law changed in Spain and if you are living PERMANENTLY in Spain, your European Licence must be renewed. We have published above what conditions must be met for licences to be renewed. Question 2. As a European citizen, can I get a 500 euro fine if I do not renew my licence? NO, you cannot. According to the “Reglamento de Conductores” there are 2 types of fines for Residents who are driv-
38
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
ing with “Non Valid Driving Licences.” 1- When the driver is living in Spain and there is no agreement between their country and Spain to change the licence, you must get a NEW ONE in Spain, which means carrying out an exam again. Once they are resident, their licences are not valid. This is what happens with drivers from non-European Countries such as Russia, Senegal, Canada, etc. You can check the list of the countries with agreements on the DGT website. In this case, the driver is fined 500 euro if there is not an agreement between both countries, and 200 euros if there is an agreement and the licence has not been changed. 2- European Drivers who must renew their licence under the new DGT instructions, if they do not do it, they will be fined 200 euro, because this licence can be changed. Therefore if you have a European Licence and you receive a 500 euro fine, you must complain to the DGT because there has been a mistake with the fine. Question 3. As a resident, can I be fined if I do not hold a Spanish driving permit? NOT in all cases. You can hold your European Driving Licence and BE A RESIDENT IF your licence is not among those that should be changed, so you can keep driving with it until it expires (see conditions above). Question 4. As a holiday maker, if I own a Spanish vehicle, can I be fined if I do not hold a Spanish driving permit? NO, you can own a house or a vehicle, but this does not mean you are resident. Many foreigners have a holiday house in Spain and they have a vehicle with Spanish plates which they use on their vacations here. To avoid being fined unfairly, please download the document EX-15 and fill it in. See the point 4.1 and make a cross in the option “CERTIFICADO DE NO RESIDENTE” and take it to the NATIONAL POLICE. Once they have legalized the document, take it with you in the car and…. PROBLEM SOLVED! We hope that these questions have solved all your doubts. Remember to call 060 for more enquiries”.

KEY COMPUTERS Computer Stress Relief Computers have become a way of life. There are few people who don’t use computers nowadays but they are related to stress and can make you want to pull your hair out at times! The following computer stress relief techniques will hopefully help in relieving this stress: 1. Get comfortable How comfortable are you now reading this? This is important. Remember most of us spend half our days in front of the computer.
By Computer City
2. Plant magic Plants and crystals are also wonderful for getting rid of toxins that help in computer stress relief. Why not place a plant on the desk next to your computer? Place a quartz cluster or purple fluorite cluster next to your computer to help protect you from its electromagnetic field. 3. Take regular breaks When I am working online or on my computer I always take regular breaks. The Internet is addictive. By setting your alarm once an hour, getting up and stretching your legs, you give yourself computer stress relief. 4. Get outside Breathe fresh air as often as possible. Take a ten-minute break once an hour and go and breathe in the fresh air or try opening a window, it really does help. 5. Up to date equipment If your equipment is really slow or keeps crashing this can be very stressful. If things are slow, rather than getting annoyed, practice deep breathing. But try to update your computer by upgrading hardware and giving it a clean up to get rid of viruses and free up space on your Hard drive. 6. Back up your information We have many customers who have lost all of their personal documents and photos. This can be very stressful and simply avoided by making regular back ups of your data onto an external drive or memory stick. 7. Learn the basics If you don’t really know how to use a computer, then get yourself some computer lessons. Of course using a computer is going to be stressful if you don’t know what you are doing, but all you need is a patient teacher! 8. Computer City Remember we are always here to help you with all your computer needs so take a deep breath and let us help you!

KEY FEATURE Fire Protection
By Anne HernandĂŠz, Costahelp.com
Certain areas in our beautiful province of Andalucia are more densely wooded and are prone to forest fires. In Mijas alone, a couple of years ago there were 54 forest fires compared to 4 in BenalmĂĄdena and only 2 in Fuengirola!
or barbecue using coal or gas from 1st June to 15th October? Electric barbecues are permitted. Make sure your neighbours are aware of this or they could be receiving an unexpected fine from the Council!
As a result of this, the Junta de Andalucia obliges all urbanisations to create and maintain a fire protection corridor (cortafuego perimetral) which is approximately 15m wide. It is also compulsory to install fire hyrdrants at strategic points. The Fire Brigade will visit and offer guidance following a free inspection.
We have had an extraordinarily dry, mild winter and just last month the fires have already started. KEY LAW Spanish Criminal Code Reform 2015 and its Implications for Companies The 2015 Reform provides companies with an exemption from criminal liability if they have effectively implemented a compliance programme that meets the requirements of the new Code. The new reform clearly follows what has been incorporated in the legislation of many other jurisdictions around the world, and it is also contained in international treaties to which Spain has adhered. Multinationals operating in Spain with already robust compliance programmes should ensure that they assess the local risk of their operations and that they ensure their corporate global compliance programme is adapted to the Spanish requirements. The previous Criminal Code Reform in 2010 introduced into the Spanish legislation the possibility for companies to be held criminally liable for acts committed by their directors or employees. However, it left some uncertainty regarding the value of having a compliance programme as an effective corporate defence. The 2015 Reform establishes that the effective adoption and implementation of a compliance programme can serve as an exonerating or attenuating factor when a company is subject to criminal liability for crimes committed by its directors or employees. The Code differentiates between: - Crimes committed in the benefit of the company by its legal representatives or by those with authorised decisionmaking authority (typically the senior management); and - Crimes committed in the benefit of the company by individuals under the management of others (“subordinated individuals”), if the commission of the offence was possible due to a lack of surveillance and control by the management. Requirements of the law In the first case, the new Code allows to exempt companies from criminal liability under the following requirements: - The board of directors has, prior to the perpetration of the crime, adopted and implemented an organisational, management, and control Model (the “Model”) suitable to prevent offences of the type committed. - The supervision of the Model is entrusted to a supervisory body with independent powers of initiative and control. The Code accepts that in small and medium-size companies, the board of directors may accomplish this function directly. - The individual authors of the crime committed the offence while intentionally and fraudulently eluding the Model. - The supervisory body has not neglected its duties of supervision and control.
42
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
By Victoria Anzola – www.seqqe.com If the crime is committed by a subordinated individual, the company will have to prove that it had effectively implemented an organisational and management Model suitable to prevent offences of the same type as the one committed, prior to the commission of the offence. The Model must incorporate the following: - Risk assessment to identify the activities within the company that may represent a risk; - Policies, procedures, and controls to prevent, mitigate, and/or sanction any criminal risks detected; - Financial management system to prevent the commission of the crimes identified; - Obligation to report any potential risks or non-compliant activities to the compliance officer/committee (i.e. the need to implement whistle blowing channels); and - Disciplinary system to sanction any violation of the management Model. - Periodic verification and changes to the model if significant violations are discovered, or if there are significant changes in the organisation, control structure, or activities of the corporation. The Code is broadly focused on crimes of very diverse nature-not focusing exclusively on bribery and/or corporate fraud. The Spanish criminal code contemplates this model as a preventive tool (and an affirmative defence instrument) in a number of ‘typical’ crimes of a “corporate” nature, such as: Fraud, influence peddling; swindling, money laundering, punishable insolvency, IP and IT damages, personal data misuse, property planning corruption, drug trafficking, terrorist financing, forgery, credit card theft, trafficking in human organs, slavery, crimes against tax and Social Security regulations... Conclusion Companies should carefully identify the risks that they may be exposed to where the crimes listed by the Code could be committed and adopt a compliance programme (Model) tailored to prevent the same. In multinational companies with well-established corporate compliance programmes, the mere translation into local language of the programme will not be sufficient to comply with the requirements established by the new criminal code – although there will be a clear benefit of having it, particularly if it is the reflection of the existence of a true culture of compliance within the organisation. It is clear that staff training is key to the effectiveness of any such Model that the company generates. (Adapted from “Corporate Compliance Programs”, Maria Hernandez, Eversheds International Law)

KEY FEATURE Facebook Profiles are not for Businesses! If you are in business and want to use Facebook as a marketing tool, use a Page not your Profile. I still find it hard to believe, but then I guess I am in my own little Facebook Bubble, that there are still people using a Facebook Profile to market themselves on Facebook when they should be using a Page. Apart from anything else I don’t quite understand their lack of etiquette ... OK yes, I’m a social media snob, but really this is just about commonsense. OK, let’s outline the reasons ... 1. It’s the Rules of Facebook - essentially that should stop you right there, but clearly many miss this fundamental point. 2. Asking people to be your friend on your Profile when you have not met them and then bombarding them with Page invites, tags and the such like is Spam. It is a complete and utter NO. If you are one of these people could you please get in touch and tell me why you do this? 3. Using a Profile looks unprofessional, it’s lazy and it clearly says ‘I don’t know what I am doing’. 4. As a Profile you are invading people’s privacy. 5. As a Page you can display relevant business information to everyone 24 hours a day. With a Profile you have to wait for that Friend request to be accepted and have no means of displaying what you do as a service. 6. A Profile is limited to 500 friends and Pages can have unlimited Fans, so ultimately your potential exposure is greater. 7. In addition, you have other tools such as Insights, scheduling, checkins, offers and adverts. Why would you want to risk being closed down by Facebook by not playing by the rules? What do you believe is the short-term gain?
By Fiona Catchpowle
So the main lesson I wish you to learn from this post is that you must never, never, never send me a friend request if you are masquerading as a business or I will roast you alive ... consider yourself told!

KEY FEATURE Me and My Dog Don’t Sleep Together... Very Well The vast majority of people who seek professional advice already know what their problems are and quite probably, the solutions will be suggested. That’s precisely why I will not pursue the professional services of a sleep consultant. I already know how that scene is going to play out. Sleep Consultant: “What’s the problem?” Me: “You know, I’m glad you’re sitting down because I’ll bet you’ve never heard this one before…..I can’t sleep.” Sleep Consultant: “Not at all?” Me: “No, I sleep fine for the first four or five hours then I’m wide awake for three or four hours.” Sleep Consultant: “Any idea what’s causing this problem?” Me: “No, not really. No stress. No anxiety. I’m tired. I want to sleep, but I can’t” Sleep Consultant: “Are you disturbed by some sort of sound?” Me: “Well, sometimes I might hear snoring?” Sleep Consultant: “Your wife snores?” Me: “Well, I don’t know. She might. But she lives in another city so unless she snores really, really loud….” Sleep Consultant: “Then who?” Me: “My dog, Jake.” Sleep Consultant: “Well, why don’t you just shut the bedroom door?” Me: “What good would that do?” Sleep Consultant: “Well, you might not hear him snore.” Me: “We sleep in the same room.” Sleep Consultant: “The same room?” Me: “Okay, the same bed.” Sleep Consultant: “Well, there’s your problem.” Me: “That’s not the only problem.” Sleep Consultant: “What else.” Me: “Nightmares.” Sleep Consultant: “When did the nightmares start?” Me: “When he was about five. I think they involve handcuffs and house cats.” Sleep Consultant: “So you sleep with a dog that snores and has nightmares?” Me: “Plus there’s a fair bit of farting going on.” Sleep Consultant: “Audible?” Me: “Yeah, but those might be mine. Truthfully, I think that’s what triggers his nightmares but hey….let him get his own sleep consultant.” Sleep Consultant: “What do you do when you can’t sleep?” Me: “I usually listen to all-night radio, A.M. radio…a bunch of wackos selling growth hormones, conspiracy theories and religion.” Sleep Consultant: “And this helps?” Me: “Well, it convinces me that I’m the most normal person on the planet.” Sleep Consultant: “Do you ever get up…maybe get a warm glass of milk?” Me: “I used to but the pain was too much.” Sleep Consultant: “So you get headaches in the middle of the night?”

Me: “No, I stub my toe on the damn ramp every time I get up. Sleep Consultant: “Ramp?” Me: “Yeah, I had a ramp built into the end of the bed.” Sleep Consultant: “So you have trouble getting in and out of bed?” Me: “Not me, the dog. It’s a dog ramp.” Sleep Consultant: “Why?” Me: “Because he’s 13 years old and I don’t want him jumping up and putting stress on his back legs.” Sleep Consultant: “So let me get this straight – you sleep with a dog that snores and has nightmares and comes in and out of bed on a ramp.” Me: “Plus sometimes he’ll try and push me out of bed. I don’t think he means to, he just straightens out his legs and pretty soon I’m clinging to the edge of the bed.” Sleep Consultant: “And you can’t sleep that way.” Me: “Actually I can but before long I have this recurring dream in which I’m falling off a cliff and I wake up screaming.” Sleep Consultant: “Which causes anxiety and therefore insomnia.” Me: “No, actually he seems to sleep right through it. Maybe my screams are muffled by his nightmare whining and barking, I don’t know.” Sleep Consultant: “Is that about it for all the noise?” Me: “Did I mention the squeaking?” Sleep Consultant: “Your dog squeaks.” Me: “No, but sometimes he rolls over on his Magic Froggy and the frog squeaks. It’s the cutest thing.” Sleep Consultan: “Have you thought about having the dog sleep in another room?” Me: “I tried that and it didn’t work.” Sleep Consultant: “Why not?” Me: “There wasn’t enough room for both of us on the couch.” Sleep Consultant: “What about making him sleep on the floor?” Me: “No, my back couldn’t take it.” Sleep Consultant: “So how long have you had this problem?” Me: “About seven years, now.” Sleep Consultant: “And how long have you had this dog?” Me: “About seven years now.” Sleep Consultant: Do you see any correlation between your sleep problem and your dog?” Me: “Ah ha. So you think the problem might be contagious?” Sleep Consultant: “No, no, no. The problem is you and your dog sleep in the same bed amidst snoring, farting, screaming, whining and barking!” Me: “Well, I knew all that before I came to you!” Sleep Consultant: “Well, the only thing I can tell you is you must seek professional advice.” Me: “You mean go see another sleep consultant?” Sleep Consultant: “No, you need to see a psychiatrist, probably a whole team of them. Frankly Mr. Thomas, you’re nuttier than Michael Jackson mainlining Froot Loops.” Me: “Well, that’s easy for you to say. You don’t listen to allnight radio.” www.williamthomas.ca

KEY FEATURE Car Thieves
By Anne Hernandéz, Costahelp.com
With the summer looming (we hope!) and the anticipated influx of tourists, there are always new scams being thought up to deprive us of our personal belongings! Car thieves, who are mostly operating in supermarket and shopping centre car parks, have a new ’trick’! If you return to your car and put it into reverse or look through the rear window before driving off and see a sticker on the back window, do not stop, drive off and remove it later. The
78
KEY TO MIJAS COSTA
car thieves are sticking a paper on the rear window so you just jump out to remove it and invariably leave the engine running and, ladies, leave your bag on the seat. As you get out, they jump in and drive away with your car. They now have not only your vehicle but your shopping and any personal belongings you might have had – your house keys, your money, your credit cards, your passport etc and your personal identity too! Please do not fall foul of these rogues, spread the word and together we can try and beat this latest scam.
